Fund for Women, Fashion, Fun & Philanthropy Show, Fundraising Event, Independence Hall Club House, Millsboro, Delaware, Bringing Together the Collective Philanthropy of Women

dscn9045

My friend, Jody, invited me to go to Independence for a Fund for Women Fashion Show and fundraising event.  Did not know where Independence was and did not know about Fund for Women.  Arriving at Independence on a beautiful Sunday, last week-end, I was so surprised to find this 55+ community tucked away on Rt. 5 near Millsboro.  Independence Hall Club House is located at 29762 Oliver Wolcott Dr., Millsboro, DE 19966.  And, what a beautiful club it was.

dscn9046

As it usually happens, when women get together with a purpose, then something does get done.  It happened that way when in 1993 16 women who became First Founders vowed to recruit 1,000 Founders, each contributing $1,000 to fund a $1 million endowment to be held at the Delaware Community Foundation.  The goal was reached and now more than 1,300 women and men have become Founders.  Since 12/31/13 the endowment has surpassed $3.1 million.

dscn9059dscn9054

When you donate $1,000 to this organization, you pledge to pay $200 for 5 years.  So, you don’t have to pay it all at once.  The Founders love to hear the bell ring every time a new Founder has joined.

Kathy Kiernan was greeting guests.  She was with the Development Dept. of Fund for Women.  All are volunteers!  You can find more about Fund for Women by visiting http://www.delcf.org/ffw.  If you have any questions, please email:  TheFundFor Women@yahoo.com.

We arrived with enough time to take part in the raffle, and get a few bites to eat.

dscn9057

The caterer was Patty’s located at 517 South Bedford St. in Georgetown, DE 19947.  Tel. 302-253-8692.  Website?  http://www.pattys.comcastbiz.net.  They were finishing setting up and had available all kinds of light bites and tastings.

The Runway was ready, but before the Fashion Show, there was some shopping to be done.  The shops in the Fashion Show also had their tables around the room where we could do some shopping at great prices.

dscn9052

dscn9065

dscn9068

Introductions were made and Cheryl Mitchell from Lunch with a Purpose was the Moderator.

dscn9088

Through the course of the Fashion Show we learned more and more about Fund for Women.  It is managed by a Board of Trustees made of women from all three counties of Delaware.

Their beliefs:  “All women and girls have intrinsic value.  We believe in giving back.  We accomplish more collectively than as individuals.  We believe in the responsibility of women’s philanthropy.”

dscn9074

With that in mind, the music started, the women, were dancing on their seats, and the models were great.  It was so much fun with a lot of impromptu “runway acting”.  The ladies modeled clothing from Azura, Candlelight Bridal, CraZy LadyZ, Deanna’s, Josephine’s Daughter, Coolspring Cottage, Lady Fenwick, Twila Farrell, and Simply Dressed.

The afternoon ended with the special occasion dresses from Candlelight Bridal in Millsboro.

Note:  The next event will be Art from My Collection to Yours on May 1st at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, in Wilmington, Delaware.   The Fund for Women and Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts will be partnering for an art auction event.  FFW Founders and local community members are invited to donate, from their own collections, works of art such as framed paintings, sculpture, ceramics, hand-made jewely, and more.  The proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction will benefit both organizations.  Want to donate or want more info?  Plese contact Ginger Ward, Next Million Chair, at Ginger.Ward@ubs.com.

Southern Delaware…..you are amazing!  Ring, Ring, Ring….the bells kept ringing!

Destination? Dolce, Bakery, Coffee Shop, Milford, Delaware, Winner of 2 First Places and One Second Place at The 2014 Rehoboth Beach Chocolate Festival!!

dscn8306

For some time my friend Debbie has been telling me to stop at Dolce on one of my road trips.  And, that’s exactly what I did the other day.  It was cold and gray as it has been practically all winter, so entering Dolce in the Downtown Milford brought a smile to my face.  Bakeries and coffee shops are a great combination.  This is a trip worth taking.  Only about 25 minutes or so north of Rehoboth Beach.

The heart and center of Milford is the Mispillion River which runs through the town.  Main Street is Walnut, and Dolce is located at 36 N. Walnut St., Milford, DE 19963.  Tel. 302-422-5760.  Website?  http://www.dolcebakery.com.  The bakery is open everyday, but closes on Sunday.  Their busiest day is Saturday.

dscn8307dscn8303

The owners are Chuck Stanko and George Carroll.  Besides delicious baked goods which by the way are all made in house from scratch and without any trans-fats, they also offer soups accompanied with a home baked roll.  They also serve breakfast sandwiches, as well.  You can visit the above mentioned website to see what soup Dolce will be serving on the day that you might want to visit.

dscn8276

For customers, Dolce offers comfortable seating and free Wi-Fi.

Dolce entered the 2014 Rehoboth Beach Chocolate Festival and were awarded 2 First Places and one Second Place.  This is not the first time they have won.  It has happened year after year.

dscn8275dscn8302

The Gooey Chocolate Cookie….you see it here on my plate.  It looks very simple, but once a bite is taken you will be hooked.  That cookie took the First Place on the Cookie Category by a Bakery.

dscn8309

Another First Place was their Stick in the Mud Brownie.  This chocolate brownie is topped with marshmallows and then topped with a chocolate ganache.

dscn8287

The new Philadelphia Butter Cake took the 2nd Place in the Bakery category.

dscn8296

It was great meeting Chuck and he graciously let me take photos.  Check the cupcakes.

dscn8277dscn8278dscn8280dscn8283

The Cheesecakes!  And, Strawberry Granola Bars!

dscn8285dscn8288dscn8290dscn8297

Other baked goods like the Bear Claw and Croissants looked so good!

dscn8300

I sipped my coffee which was exactly what I needed…a pick me upper late in the day.  I had to go but I will be back….Milford is one destination I am interested discovering further.

Groundhog Day!! Sunday, February 2nd…Looking forward to the forecast!! It better be a good one!! No Shadow, Pleeease!

dscn7346

I am looking forward to Groundhog Day just as much as to the Super Bowl.  Super Bowl Sunday is not the only the only event going on.  Phil will come out of his burrow and, hopefully, will not see its shadow.  Could not handle 6 more weeks of winter.  Lots of events happening while waiting for Phil to come out.  Please visit http://www.groundhog.org.

dscn7345

Federal Donuts, from Philadelphia, came to my house this past week-end and they were so good.  My favorite?  The Cookies & Cream.  Federal Donuts offer Coffee, Donuts, and Chicken…people line up for hot donuts right out of the oven…your choice if you want chicken or not.  Please check them out at http://www.federaldonuts.com.

dscn7331

We have balmy winters in Southern Delaware.  The beaches is a great place to enjoy a snow event.  Fresh snow….the surroundings are quiet.  This morning was such a day.

dscn7348

dscn7351

So, my “rescued” Heinz 57, Addy, decided it was time to go outside…..Oh, I don’t thik so.

dscn7342

This is more like it…I think so.

dscn7328

Waiting patiently for spring!!  Talk to you later.

Destination? Angelucci, Studios, Artists’ Gallery, Woodworking, Stained Glass, Milford, Delaware, Shopping, Southern Delaware!!

dscn6009

“Milford is a community with respect for its past and great promise for the future.”  It is undeniable the spirit of renewal in the town of Milford.  Trees, street art, Victorian lampposts are lining the streets…the beautiful Riverwalk.  The city is involved with the Delaware Main Street program, revitalizing the downtowns through historic preservation.  The town is lucky to have so many of its residents that are on board and full of enthusiasm as Milford becomes a destination in Southern Delaware.

One of such artists and mentors is Scott Angelucci.  His Studio & Artists’ Gallery is located in a building on the corner of Walnut Street and Park Avenue.  This building is also the home of the Mispillion Art League.  Scott Angelucci’s Fine Woodworking Studio is located at 7 Park Avenue, with the Stained Glass Studio and Artists’s Gallery at 4 Park Avenue.  Tel.302-422-4533  Website? http://www.angeluccifinewood-stainedglass.blogspot.com.

dscn6051

dscn6050

Years ago Scott Angelucci made for my husband a humidor.  This time I was picking up a custom compass box, also commissioned by my late husband.  Scott’s work is amazing.

dscn6020

Angelucci Studios & Artists’ Gallery serves as a gallery for local artists displaying their works of art, and it is also Gail Angelucci’s Stained Glass Studio.

dscn6012

Both, Gail and Scott are very welcoming and easy to talk to.  Gail was already working on a stained glass piece, Scott was ready to show me the gallery.

dscn6047

dscn6049

I thought this would be the perfect post at this time of the year when we are trying to find gifts that are unique and personal.

The basket weaver…

dscn6036

Atomic Arc-Work’s by Travis D. Carter.  He repurposes old parts found in his travels, building sculptures and metal furniture.

dscn6025dscn6022

Gypsy Fox Jewelry by Elaine Pataky.  Elaine has lived all around the U.S.  She has a formal education in Fine Arts, Interior Design and is a flower show judge for National Garden Clubs.  Her medium has become jewelry; working as a wire-sculptor, using semi-precious stones and glass and crystal beads.

dscn6033

Steve Childers is a wood turner.  Besides his beautiful work, Mr. Childers “Viewing Stones” give you something to think about.

dscn6017

“Viewing Stones are adminired and exhibited as works of art in their own right.  Consequently, they are always displayed in isolation.”  Each is unique, and perceived differently by the viewer.  Using your imagination, the stone can be a mountain, an island, an animal?  You decide.

dscn6015

Jacob’s Gems….a disability, that did not stop him.  Paper shredding with a note, perfect for packing material and fillers.

dscn6010

A painter with a disease….also not stopping him, either.

dscn6043

Scott can give you a tour of his gallery any time.  Shopping in Downtown Milford is best from Thursday through Saturday.

Destination? Milford, Delaware, Art Tour, Riverwalk Tour, Gateway to Southern Delaware, Milford Artists Mentor Art Students, Sussex County

dscn6115

The Second Season at the Delaware Beaches is a great time to go out and about and discover the towns surrounding the beaches.  The cool weather, blue skies and no traffic let visitors and residents move around Southern Delaware with ease.

I am discovering Milford, Delaware, which is north of Rehoboth Beach.  It only took about half hour to get there.  For some years, Downtown Milford has been going through a revitalization, which brings residential streets in small towns back to life.

The Mispillion River runs through Milford.  It is the heart and center of this town, where galleries, shops and theater are for everyone to enjoy.

dscn6114

The Mispillion Riverwalk is a greenway space that preserves the town’s waterfront.  Milford has over 2 centuries of shipbuilding and at one point there were 7 shipyards located along this walk.  Between 1680 and 1927 they produced over 600 wooden sailing ships.

dscn6076

dscn6075

So, it was not surprising to find out that 6 permanently displayed boat sculptures were unveiled this summer, all decorated with the theme of Milford’s “River Town”, “Art Town”, “Home Town”.  The inspiration was the “Augusta”, a private yacht built in 1927 at the Vinyard Shipyard.  In 2010 it was restored to its original beauty.  I found it resting for the winter.

dscn6113

Local artists mentoring art students have produced the following sculptures that can be enjoyed while walking through Downtown Milford.  They are bright and bring a colorful touch to the streets.

The morning scenes in Home Town…historic Bethel AME Church, coffee shop morning crowds…scenes melt together symbolizing connectivity.

dscn6073

River Town. Home Town…the glass mosaic highlights the Walnut Street business district and the Riverwalk Boatyard.

dscn6072

Art Town….bold and graphic with water flowing underneath.

dscn6070

River Town…river dwellers, clouds, and plant life.

dscn6064

River Town, Art Town, Home Town…one side shows the whimsical bridge connecting rural and urban Milford. Another side shows the Santa House, farmers market, cyclists on the Riverwalk.

dscn6053

River Town…dedicated to the historic shipbuilding industry, honoring 7 major shipyards.

dscn6111

Have a great day!!  Please note that the best days to visit Milford are Thursday through Saturday.  The Museum is open on Sundays too.

Mango Mania! Smoothie, Easy, Refreshing, A Summer Favorite!! Good Morning Delaware Beaches

Florida Mangoes

Florida Mangoes

Hot weather, blue skies….the beach.  This one is for the diet concious!

In Rehoboth Beach, Giant is my source for mangoes, 4 for $5…in Florida, they are plentiful, and most of the time free for me.  And, when I was growing up in Puerto Rico, practically every house had mango tree and I would, literally, sit with a bag of mangoes in front of me and start eating them.  No knife needed, either.

Giant in Rehoboth Beach Mangoes

Giant in Rehoboth Beach Mangoes

Mangoes are native of India.  They are the most cultivated fruit of the tropical world.

Local Delaware strawberries are small, sweet and delicious…..so why not a little Mango Mania and Strawberries?

dscn4859

MANGO MANIA SMOOTHIE

1 cup fresh mango chunks, chilled

3 tsps. lime juice, unstrained and chilled

1 1/2 cups strawberries, fresh sliced and chilled

12 oz. diet gingerale, chilled

Put mango, lime juice, and strawberries in the blender and whirl until smooth.

Tilt the blender and gradually pour gingerale downside to avoid too much fizz.

Pour into a neat, tropical looking glass and serve.
