A beautiful time of the year in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, when residents, family, and friends gather at the Bandstand for Rehoboth Beach Main Street’s Downtown Tree Lighting & Hometown Sing-Along, on Friday, November 28th from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

The Clear Space Theatre Company launches its 100th production on September 21st through October 7th, with the comedy Shirley Valentine, starring Equity actress Elaine Faye. This one-woman tour de force is an intimate moving and hysterical look at the life of a British housewife who discovers that her humdrum existence isn’t quite as dead as she thought.
She spends her days talking to the kitchen walls and preparing dinner for her grumbling husband. When an opportunity to travel to Greece arises, she hesitantly seizes the moment….

Over the eight seasons of bringing live theatre to the beach, Clear Space has produced a diverse collection of musicals, dramas and comedies, including Annie Get Your Gun, South Pacific, Fiddler on The Roof, and The Crucible.
This past season, Clear Space presented Blithe Spirit, My Fair Lady, Annie, Little Shop of Horrors, and Cabaret, as well as toe-tapping musical revues to its new location at 20 Baltimore Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach. A total of 8 theater performances per year.
Clear Space also begins its 8th season with expanded Arts Institute classes for children grades 1 – 12, as well as classes for adults including the popular Legends class for the 50+ set. Their 5 Musical Theatre Summer Intensive programs for children in grades 1 -12 broke enrollment records.
And, their thrift store, Encore, located next to Arby’s on Route 1, (Coastal Highway), is having a banner year with wonderful array of donated merchandise at the right price.
What lies ahead for calendar year 2013 is an impressive line-up of shows that includes The Mousetrap, 9 to 5: the musical, La Cage Aux Folles, A Little Night Music….all these are must see productions!
The company is under the leadership of a committed Board of Directors, chaired by Kay Ryan, and Dough Yetter, Artistic Director, well known in the community for his musical and acting talent. Clear Space is grateful for the continued loyalty of the public and for their strong base of volunteers.

Friday Tours by the Rehoboth Beach Museum – The Rehoboth Beach Museum will provide guided tours of the museum and the Anna Hazzard Tent House beginning on Friday August 3rd. and through September 28th. All tours start at Anna Hazzard Tent House located at 17 Christian St. at 9:00 a.m. The tours are included with the cost of admission to the museum, which is paid when the tour arrives at the museum. Reservations are strongly suggested. Please call 302-227-7310 to reserve a space. The Anna Hazzard Tent House was built in 1895 for use as housing during religious camp meetings. After that tour, you will drive to the Rehoboth Beach Museum located at 511 Rehoboth Ave. The Museum which was formerly the town’s ice house is currently hosting 2 exhibits. “Rehoboth Speaks: The Story Nation’s Summer Capital” and “World War II: Rehoboth Beach”. Admission to the Museum is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, college students, and military, $2 for children ages 13 to 17. Children 12 and under are free. More info? Saturday, 8/4 – It is the 34th Annual Sandcastle Contest in Downtown Rehoboth Beach at Fisherman’s Beach at the north end of the Rehoboth Boardwalk. Free of Charge. Over 100 teams and over 800 contestants. In the past some of the amazing creations have been, swamp animals, mermaids, pyramids, crabs, dolphins, and sharks among others. It is open to adults and children. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Start sculpting after that. Sculptures must be completed by 3 p.m. for judging. Saturday, 8/4 – News from Doggies at the Beach…the premier dog day care and dog boarding facility in Rehoboth Beach. I can fully recommend it. I use it and I feel totally at ease when I leave Addy there. They are expanding!! In honor of their expansion for the month of August and only on Mondays and Tuesdays only…buy one day care and receive the second one free. Discount vaccination Day is Saturday, 8/4 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Master Groomers are needed due to the expansion. They want to be able to groom 7 days a week, during the day and evenings. Even though I am in Delray Beach this week, when I left Rehoboth Beach I could tell that Spring was around the corner; my daffodils were growing like crazy and the pear trees had buds on their branches. Seemed like the birds were chirping up a storm, as well. Those little signs that make you feel so good. And if you get a crisp sunny day, then smile because it does not get better than that.
I woke up in Delray Beach to, again, a chilly morning. Hopefully, it will be warmer tomorrow.
But, if you are at the Delaware Beaches, then this is what you have to look forward to.

Backstage Lecture Series – Monday, March 21st at 10:00 a.m. Tickets are $10 and include the seminar, coffee and bagels. It is a monthly installment of theatre-related discussions. On Monday, March 21st the discussion will be “The Shakespeare Nobody Knows” by Lloyd King, a local English and humanities scholar and instructor.
One of the most, if not the most, prolific playwrights in history, William Shakespeare penned 37 plays and 154 sonnets in his lifetime. His work has been the inspiration for countless other works, from musicals to movies to contemporary interpretations of his stories. “The Shakespeare Nobody Knows” will begin with a brief biography of the playwright, leading up to 1599, a pivotal year in his incredible life. In 1599, he wrote 4 immortal plays, “Henry V”, “As You Like It”, “Julius Caesar”, and “Hamlet”, taking audiences to new intellectual heights.
Mr. King received his Master’s Degree in English from the University of Tennessee, and has also studied at the University of North Carolina, American University, and Pace College. He taught English for nearly 40 years in Delaware, and operated a touring Shakespeare company at Glasgow High School.
He hopes his participation in this Backstage Lecture will help ease local audiences into being active and eager observers of Shakespeare’s work.

The Secret Garden – March 31st until April 17th. This production has just started rehearsing. The Secret Garden is based on the 1922 novel of the same name, opened on Broadway in 1991 and won multiple Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical. The music is by Lucy Simon and book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marsha Norman.
Clear Space is celebrating the centennial of the original novel, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, with this musical adaptation. The story revolves around young Mary Lennox, who is sent to live with family she has never met after being orphaned. As she and the servants bring new life to the mansion’s neglected garden, Mary also renews the spirits of her grieving uncle and sickly cousin.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, $15 for students, and $5 for children 12 and under. They are available online at www.clearspacetheatre.org, via telephone at 302-227-2270 or in person at the box office which is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Doggies at the Beach is a Cage Free facility for boarding your best canine friend. They have web cams in case you want to follow what your pooch is doing or who he or she is playing with, and most of all your pet will have 24-hours supervision. I leave Addy, my dog, there without reservation. I trust them completely.

2 doggies are being fostered from Safe Haven and they would love to adopt them locally. I have sen them and they are so nice and adorable.
Meet Papi. A beagle, loving, gentle, housebroken and does not bark like a beagle; great with other dogs, as well.
Smokie is a pure Cocker Spaniel that is energetic and loves life.

One of the most popular seasonal beers at Dogfish Head is Aprihop. Available in stores through May. They have been brewing it for quite some time now. The flavor is rich, complemented by the addition of apricots. If you are a beer lover, then this one should be checked out this time of the year.
