Destination? Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, The Beaches, Blue Skies, Low Humidity, Time to Hit Rehoboth Beaches, The Nation’s Summer Capital, Southern Delaware

dscn5492

You have finally arrived in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  A destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment.  It is a great place to relieve the soul-crushing stress you built up in the traffic trying to get here.  If you have come to the Delaware Beaches before, you know exactly what I mean.  This week will be a test for all of you with lots of patience.

There are several beaches in Rehoboth Beach.  The state of Delaware has about 30 miles of beach.  You just have to find your own niche.

Rehoboth Avenue is Main Street.  At the end of this street, going east, is the Atlantic Ocean and an award winning Boardwalk, where summer memories are made every year.  Early in the a.m. you see the colorful umbrellas up and down the beach.  Just get there early to find a good spot.  You will have an advantage here because if you get hungry, just walk up and down and grab some Boardwalk grub, or, hit one of the many restaurant along the Avenue.

dscn9845

South of the Boardwalk, and near Queen St., is a gay beach, called Poodle Beach, frequented more by men.

And, past North Shores, at the Cape Henlopen State Park, there is Whiskey Beach, where on one side of this beach, there are a lot of families and on the other side is another gay beach, frequented more by women and fishermen.

dscn5111

There is an entry fee for parking at the State Park.  This beach has beautiful scenery with the WWII Towers right by your side.

dscn9860

I was so lucky yesterday, when my friend called me to see if I wanted to sit on the beach.  It turned out to be such a beautiful day after the rain.  She belongs to a club located in North Shores.  The club is called The Henlopen Acres Beach Club.  It is a private club exclusively for the residents and property owners of Henlopen Acres.  It has 535 feet of ocean frontage.  It was incorporated in 1958.  The club is a true beach club, unpretentious to say the least.

dscn5852

North Shores is a neighbordhood of Rehoboth Beach.  Beautiful homes with gorgeous views at the water’s edge.

dscn5844

An inherent stress, the unfolding of a beach chair….how about getting that beach umbrella just right?  Chairs and umbrellas, all set out for you.  No need to carry anything, which is right up my alley.

dscn5862

Looking up and down the beach….even though it was Sunday afternoon there were plenty of sun worshippers out there.

dscn5842

We decided on a particular spot, and what can I say but that life’s a beach and we are so lucky to be able to play in the sand.  Never take it for granted.

dscn5858

The Delaware Beach experience is a must.  Each beach has its own personality.  Just like I mentioned before, you have to find the one that best suits you and your family.  The serenade of steady waves, the company of a good friend, the interesting conversation, certainly beats staying home doing….

Leaving the beach at around 6 p.m., already you can see that some had already gone home.  It is a quiet time during those hours and the perfect time to chill out and relax.

I believe the photo is circa 1906 on Rehoboth Beach, Delaware….an award winning Boardwalk.  Since those times it has been the life of the town, strolling the boards with the Atlantic Ocean as the view!!

We have come a long way, but still the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk offers its visitors and residents a relaxing gathering place.  Some walk it, jog it, or even bring their dogs to it.

dscn9845

In the evenings, summer visitors gather at the Boardwalk for rides, games, and favorite Boardwalk Grub!!

CAMP Rehoboth, Exhibit, Rehoboth Beach Museum, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, CAMP = Create a More Positive Rehoboth, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

CAMP_Rehoboth_Exhibit_at_RBHS

A new exhbit at The Rehoboth Beach Museum features items that illustrate the history of the organization known as CAMP Rehoboth.  With this exhibit Rehoboth Beach Museum honors the history of CAMP Rehoboth.

The organization, whose name is an acronym for Create a More Positive Rehoboth, was founded 24 years ago.  CAMP Rehoboth is a LGBT community service organization that has grown from its original small office on Baltimore Avenue, publishing a 4-page newsletter to a nationally-known organization with a long list of services, activities, events and programs.

The once modest Letters from CAMP Rehoboth newsletter now runs anywhere from 88 to 120 pages an issue.

Visitors are invited to visit the Rehoboth Beach Museum to view past issues of the newsletter, photos and t-shirts from the early days of the organization.

The shovel used to break ground for the new community center is on display, as is a bumper sticker stating “Keep Rehoboth a Family Town”, a tangible example of the tensions in the community that led to the founding of CAMP Rehoboth.  Also on display is a framed ceremonial copy of SB121 which added the words “sexual orientation” as a protected class under Delaware’s non-discrimination laws.

The Rehoboth Beach Museum is open 10 – 4 from Monday through Friday, 11 – 3 Saturday and Sunday.  It is located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue by the Rehoboth Beach Visitor’s Center and by the Roundabout.  Admission is by donation.  Call 302-227-7310 for more information.  And, please visit http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org

Destination? Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market, Tuesdays, Noon – 4:00 p.m. Fresh, Local, Produce, Baked Goods, Meet the Farmers & Vendors! Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn0565

Spending time in Rehoboth Beach gets even better if you happen to be visiting on Tuesdays.  Just like this past Tuesday it was a sunny and hot day in the Nation’s Summer Capital.  And, right behind the Visitors Center the white tents were already up….the Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market begins at Noon and ends at 4 p.m.

dscn0599

dscn0600

The increasing demand for healthier food are making these farmers’ markets a gathering place….it so much more personal than being in a traditional grocery store.  You can interact with the growers and vendors.  Plus, I think they also have become social events.  If you are a local meet the visitors.  Farmers markets offer fresh and local produce and baked goods.

dscn0591

The Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market website is very informative.  You can read about the vendors, what will be happening at the market, entertainment, and recipes.  Please visit http://www.rbfarmersmarket.com.

Flowes, breads, vegetables…..look how beautiful they looked.

dscn0574dscn0577dscn0578dscn0579

Some of the residents show up very early, so as not to miss anything.  Even though baked goods were plentiful on Tuesday, they do go quickly….our local bakeries are excellent.

dscn0568dscn0570

Fresh Harvest Hydroponics got my attention.  They were from Millsboro, Delaware.  Tel. 301-643-2487.  Lettuces and basil….hydroponics; growing plants in water without soil.

dscn0572

dscn0571

Jams and jellies always found at the market.

dscn0593

Fifer’s raspberries looked gorgeous!!

dscn0580

Then, I came to the end of the line……Bennett Orchards had a truck full of peaches….the first of the season, making their appearance at the Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market.  Offering fresh cut peaches to customers….when peaches are just picked, it becomes a complete different fruit….

dscn0586

dscn0582

So, I am watching the unloading of the peaches….and I do want to take some pictures.  They looked beautiful.

dscn0588

dscn0585

The line of customers was pretty long.  It was, definitely, the tent to hit on Tuesday.

dscn0581

I decided to stand behind the guy with the stripe t-shirt…..He was buying peaches, berries, you name it.  So, all of a sudden I was tapped on my shoulder.  The lady said…..”The line is back there.”   Some were rolling their eyes, I just told her I wanted to take some pictures….not buying anything.  Not to worry, please…not cutting in line.

Then, the guy with the stripe t-shirt turned and said “Go right ahead, I am on vacation”.  That was priceless!!  And I was grateful. These are my photos.

dscn0587dscn0583dscn0589

You know what’sgood about the Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market?  That even on a hot day, it is great to visit.  Lots of trees and the Tot Lot adjacent to it make it a place for the whole family.  You sit and enjoy your goodies or just take in the scene.

dscn0596

Oh, wow….there is my friend with the stripe t-shirt.  He was really shopping the market.

dscn0594

Have a great day!!  Remember Tuesdays, rain or shine!!

Rehoboth Beach Eats! Bramble & Brine, Restaurant, Review, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches

“One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating.”  luciano pavarotti and william wright

Which brings me to my post…..Roberta, Missy, Debbie, and I have been getting together to celebrate each others birthdays for so many years.  I really don’t remember how many exactly, but they have been many.  We usually have breakfast, but now that we are more matured, it is about time we start having dinner instead.

The following photo is of us after having dinner at Bramble & Brine, located at 315 Rehoboth Avenue, in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  Tel. 302-227-7702.  Find The Bramble & Brine on Facebook.

dscn0363

Megan and Joe Churchman are they owners of Bramble & Brine that opened last fall in Rehoboth Beach.  Rehoboth is a foodie’s destination and opening a restaurant in this town is probably challenging and exciting at the same time.  So much competition….guess what?  Megan and Joe have managed to create a restaurant catering to a diverse clientele, whose taste and palate are very discriminating.

I congratulated Megan for their success….and her answer was “we are so blessed”.

I called about 2 weeks in advance to make a reservation….I wanted that much sought after table by the window at streetside.  You can see it on the above photo to the right.  Yes, that was our table.  Missy was celebrating a birthday and our table looked beautiful, colorful and we could not wait to experience our dinner.

dscn0340

Bramble & Brine was comfortably crowded at 7:30 p.m.  The bar had customers enjoying a few drinks waiting for their tables.  The restaurant has a shabby chic decor….we loved that our chairs had wheels; easier to push in and out.

You will only see the photos of our food…..privacy is important when taking photos, especially when it is crowded.

After much catching up we decided to start with 2 appetizers for the table.  Bramble & Brine outdid themselves with the food presentation.

The Lemon Carameled Scallops with pickled mushrooms, radish, pearl onion, chive and shellfish emulsion, and coconut creme fraiche where so tasty.  Love when scallops are crispy on the outside and oh so….melting in your mouth, as well.

dscn0343

Ribeye Crown with corn truffle, stuffed poblano, hominy, chimichurri and queso fresco.  Good combinations with the poblano and chimichurri adding that extra punch.

dscn0344

Some salads were ordered, as well:

The Chestnut Smoked Ricotta Salata with beets, cucumbers, pea tendril, micro basil, bread and butter pickle dressing.  That was my salad and it was refreshing.  My palate was ready for the main event.

dscn0351

The Market Salad had arugula, radish, shaved pecorino, and sherry vinaigrette.  Very nice with a light and well seasoned vinaigrette.

dscn0347

The Birthday Girl, Missy, decided to have the Chowder.  The chowder had clam and tomato broth, confited fingerlings, braised bacon, charred leeks, and confit tomato.   At tableside the broth was poured over the clams to complete the dish.  A presentation of a steamy chowder was well received.

dscn0348

dscn0349

Three orders of Halibut with fregola and radish, cauliflower puree, caper and brown butter. The were devoured and got great reviews.

dscn0353

Any time I see a whole fish offered at a restaurant, I pretty much order it.  Even though you have to be careful with some bones, a whole fish offers total flavors.  So, when I saw that Bramble & Brine was offering Salt Crusted Whole Rainbow Trout my choice was easily made.  It had a parsley puree, new potato, enoki mushroom, sweet sopressate and confit almonds.  It was served on a slate tile; it looked gorgeous, and it tasted even better.

dscn0357

Believe it or not….we did order dessert.   All desserts are made in-house.  The Pound Cake Banana Split did not last long.  The homemade salted caramel ice cream was to die for, as well as the pretzel ice cream.  It also had banana jam peanut butter and cashew nougat and toasted malt crumbs. These dessert was made for sharing.

dscn0359

Note:  Our server was so pleasant…he knew his menu well.  He was very attentive, but not intrusive.

Wishing Megan and Joe the best for Summer 2014!!

Having a meal with friends is….priceless!!  Talk to you later.

Destination? Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Walking Tours, Jolly Trolley Tours, Rehoboth Beach Historical Society, Rehoboth Beach Museum, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

IMG_0266

Getting to know Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, is getting even easier these days thanks to the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and the Rehoboth Beach Museum.

The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society promotes education about the history of this very popular coastal town, which is a destination for many on the east coast who want to get away from the summer heat in cities.  Rehoboth Beach is one of those towns that can call itself a year-round resort.

Sea_Witch_Magical_History_Tour

If you are visiting Rehoboth Beach and would like to know more this is what you can do….The Jolly Trolley, which is the best way to get around this busy town, has teamed up, just like they have been doing in the past, with the Rehoboth Beach Museum for guided tours of the city.  Tours begin at 9 a.m. and last approximately 50 minutes.  The Trolley Tour will start and end at the Anna Hazzard Museum located at 17 Christian Street in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.

The cost of the tour is $10, cash only, which also includes entrance to the Anna Hazzard House and the Rehoboth Beach Museum.  Reservations are required.  Please call the Museum at 302-227-7310.

Next tour will be Thursday, June 19th.  Other dates are:  August 21st, September 4th, September 18th, and Ocotober 24th of Sea Witch Weekend.  On Sea Witch Weekend they will add an extra tour at 10 a.m.

This is a fun and relaxing tour.  Visitors and locals will experience first hand pieces of the history of Rehoboth Beach such as the birth of the town as a Methodist Camp Meeting site, and its growth as a resort town.  Learn about shipwrecks, submarines, storms and sand dunes.

100_2781

The Jolly Trolley began its first runs in 1970.  It began when a group of locals wanted to have a means of transportation that would let visitors get a feel for the sights, smells and different experiences of two resort areas; Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach….the rest is history.  More info?  Visit http://www.jollytrolley.com

08

If you decide that what you would like to do is walk….then, the new Walking Tour of Rehoboth Beach might be the thing to do.  This town is very walkable.  The tour will feature a 45 minute gentle stroll around Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  It will start at the Bandstand, at the end of Rehoboth Avenue and the Boardwalk at 9 a.m.

dscn9843

The first tour will be on Thursday, June 26th.  The cost will be $10.  Reservations are requried and you may do so by calling the Museum at 302-227-7310.

This tour will provide general information about the history of Rehoboth Beach, while touching on several of the Storms that have shaped the coastline and the beachfront in town.  Tour Guide, Jean Brolund, will lead walkers from the Bandstand north of Rehoboth Ave., point out landmarks and providing photos of historical sites and events.

Some of the topics that will be covered are the Native peoples of the area, The Methodist Camp Meetings, Hotels and Railroad service, and Horn’s Pavilion.  Future tours will cover the area south of Rehoboth Avenue.

dscn5354

Make sure you take notice, The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union Fountain constructed in 1929 and added in 1977 to the National Register of Historic Places.  My post on http://www.aboutmybeaches.com, was written on 9/12/13.  Just check it out.  This fountain is located at the end of Rehoboth Avenue, on the Boardwalk.

Wear comfortable shoes, take a bottle of water or fill up a water bottle at The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union Fountain.  There are restrooms available at the Bandstand area.

Destination? Shorebreak Lodge, Restaurant, Bar, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Review, It’s Restaurant Week in Downtown Rehoboth Beach!! Shorebreak Lodge is 133 Steps to the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn9972

There are 27 participating restaurants in one square mile in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  That’s pretty impressive!!  This is the perfect week to try restaurants in Downtown Rehoboth that you had not even thought about trying before for whatever reasons.  There are great deals going on….and, you still have time because this event is ongoing through Friday, June 6th.

dscn9970

I have to give a shout to Rehoboth Beach Main Street, the sponsor of this very popular event.  I was so thrilled to find out that I had won a $25 gift certificate to be used during the week.  It came just in time because I used it on Tuesday, June 5th.  Rehoboth Beach Main Street draws attention to the downtown district.  It is the heart of Downtown Rehoboth Beach, bringing to this charming seaside community so many events for the entire family.  For more info., please visit http://www.downtownrehoboth.com.

It is going to be 5 years in July since I started this blog.  I have lived at the Delaware Beaches for so many years, that I do consider myself a “local”.  A blog is a “diary” of sorts.  The writer puts out his or hers experiences.  I do love promoting the Delaware Beaches.  So, I have been doing just that; reviewing restaurants, finding the best corn, the farmers’ markets, activities, and events, and the usual bla, bla, bla….

One evening, a month or so ago, I was on Wilmington Avenue when the lights and front of a restaurant caught my attention.  I am sorry to say that I had not heard about it, but, I kept it on the back of my mind, after reading the menu. It would be an interesting one to try.  Guess what?  They have been in Downtown Rehoboth Beach for 3 years!!  What kind of a local am I?

photo (15)

Shorebreak Lodge was the destination of one of my usual suspects, Debbie, and I, on Tuesday.  We had not read any reviews…we were going with no preconceived ideas.  How perfect was that?

photo (16)

Shorebreak Lodge is located just 133 steps to the Atlantic Ocean, on 10 Wilmington Avenue.  Tel. 302-227-1007.  Website?  http://www.shorebreaklodge.com.  Of course, I forgot my camera which was unusual, the iphone would do, I hoped.

Even before I tasted any of the food, I liked Shorebreak.  We live at the beach, it is a laid back casual atmosphere; the one visitors come to experience.  I was drawn to Shorebreak, then, when I tasted the food…I decided I could not wait to go back again.

photo (1)

It is called Shorebreak Lodge because the owners are surfers…Montauk, NY, a favorite spot.  The location is practically on the beach….shorebreakers are found at the water’s edge.

Debbie and I decided to sit at sidewalk….with the big windows next to us.

photo (2)photo (10)

Infused water, iced tea and a little atmosphere to start our evening.  The service was attentive and not obtrusive.

Shorebreak Lodge can sit up to 70 customers.  The menu changes constantly, bringing customers the fresh ingredients of the day.  The food is not complicated….food allergy concerns?  Please let them know.

The Roast Beets, Bucheron and Lentils….I love beets and so does Debbie.  The combination of colors and flavors enhanced our tastebuds.

photo (4)

At times, and depending how they are cooked, octopus can be a little tough, but not on Tuesday.  My Grilled Octopus “Romesco” was very flavorful and tender.

photo (6)

The Hake (Cape Cod), en papillote, with bacon chutney, carrot n’ fennel was presented beautifully and tasted just as good as it looked.

photo (8)

photo (9)

And the Surf n’ Turf of braised short ribs and sea scallops….I loved.  Risotto accompanied the short ribs, which by the way melted in your mouth.  Always a fan of scallops, these were cooked and seasoned to perfection.

photo (11)

Our selections for sweet endings were:

The strawberry puff pastry shortcake.  Strawberries are in season, so we had to.

photo (12)

The Avocado and Coconut Milk “Creme Brulee”….first time seen it on a menu, so, we had to….and by the way, it was awesome.  It was so good to be able to distinct the avocado and coconut flavors.

photo (13)

Very pleasantly surprised….so now you know…let me know how your experience is.  Check it out when visiting the Nation’s Summer Capital.
