It is one of those autumn days when the sun is shining, the humidity is low, not a cloud in the sky….Rehoboth Beach looks gorgeous and ready for what looks like a full week-end ahead.

If you happen to see a lot of Greyhounds walking in groups is because they are also here at the beaches.  Most of them are staying in Dewey Beach celebrating Greyhounds Reach the Beach.

The Beach; for some it is a source of Inspiration; For others? Simple Relaxation, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

IMG_1333

A friend was visiting from Colorado.  She thought she would be able to enjoy a day at the beach.  You know swimming, tanning, sand between your toes.  All those things we take for granted when we live at the beach.

img_7482

Marisa has the mountains and I have the beach.  We get together when we can.  We have been friends forever.

Walking in Rehoboth at this time of the year is a real treat.  It gets crowded on week-ends; on any day during the evenings the restaurants are comfortably crowded, as well.

So, yesterday we took in some stores, a little lunch and a walk on the beach.  It really was beautiful, serene and just taking in that salty air made you feel good.  No other way to describe it.

We were not the only ones relaxing.  We found a group of Greyhounds.  The actual Greyhounds Reach The Beach starts today in Dewey Beach.   If you do need some info. on what is going with events, etc. etc. you can visit www.deweybeachvendordirectory.com and www.greyhoundsreachthebeach.com.

They were so relaxed; they certainly are quiet and gentle dogs.  They all had very neat collars; ready to impress this week-end.

Later on we saw another group, including some Whippets which are like Greyhounds.  They were also very stylish with their collars.  Then when I was putting the picture on this post, I noticed the owner’s own pocketbook.  The face of a Whippet.

img_7502

That’s all for this short post.  Nothing else needed to be said.

Getting ready for some surf fishing.

100_0808

According to the 2010 census the population of the town of Dewey Beach is 341 and this number has increase dover the past 10 years.  It definitely increases during the summer when over 30,000 people enjoy what a lot believe to be “a way of life”.

img_3459

Dewey’s location makes it the perfect place to visit for those who love the ocean, the bay, sports, bar hopping, restaurants and entertainment.  All this can be found on a very walkable 1 mile long strip and only 2 blocks wide.

img_3453

The Atlantic Ocean on one side, the Rehoboth Bay on the other.  Dewey is a summer beach town.

It can get very quiet during the second season but during the week-end, Dewey can still hold its own.  If you are visiting, this is what you will find on Dewey’s calendar.

The 15th Annual Greyhounds Reach the Beach, Dewey Beach, Delaware, Columbus Week-End, Delaware Beaches

I had to take a drive to Dewey Beach; only about 1 1/2 miles from my house.  This week-end was the 15th Annual Greyhounds Reach the Beach.  Every year, at this time of the year, all you see are greyhounds all over the beaches.  Owners are not just satisfied with one; they usually have 2 or 3 or even more.

101_0013

101_0023

Anyway, this annual event is the largest gathering of retired racing greyhounds in the U.S.   It is not a Greyhound Rescue, Inc. event.  It is sponsored by the Greyhound Project, Inc., but because they are close, they always have huge numbers of their dogs attending.  For more info. on the Greyhound Rescue, Inc., please visit www.greyrescue.org/fun_stuff/reach_the_beach.shtml.

The Greyhound Project, Inc. is a volunteer, non-profit organization, located in Framington, MA, providing information about and promoting the adoption of retired racing greyhounds.

It was founded in 1992.  It promotes the welfare and adoption of greyhounds by providing support and information to adoption organizations, adoptees, and the public.  Please check them out by visiting www.adopt-a-greyhound.org.

Greyhounds are great family members.  They are calm, intelligent and low maintenance.  They will share your couch or your jogging with equal enthusiasm.

101_0022

I rescued my dog, Addy, about a year and half ago.  All I can tell you is that she is so sweet and greateful for me giving her a forever home.  The rescue organization I used was Paws of Tomorrow, Ocean View, Delaware.  Website www.pawsoftomorrow.com.

The first greyhound I encountered in Dewey was Riley.  She was so at ease sitting by Grotto Pizza with her owner.  I had to take her picture.  She looked like a diva with those sunglasses.

101_0012

Then I saw the other dog who was exhausted after walking up and down the town of Dewey checking out the vendors.  Another diva; relaxing.

101_0014

On the way to the beach I encountered the people from Ohio that have North Coast Greyhound Connection.  Their motto?  Change a Life… Adopt a Retired Racer…You will Fall in Love…  Please check their website www.northcoastgreyhoundconnection.org.

The greyhounds in the picture were all privately owned.

101_0017

Right on the beach some of the dogs were in the water or just by the water’s edge.

101_0019

Then, others, were just relaxing with their owners.  I met the ladies that owned an Italian greyhound that, by the way, was a little chilly and the other greyhound that did not move even when I took his picture.  They were from Long Island.

What a great gathering on such a gorgeous day!!!  It did make me smile…talk to you later…
