The 15th Annual Greyhounds Reach the Beach, Dewey Beach, Delaware, Columbus Week-End, Delaware Beaches
I had to take a drive to Dewey Beach; only about 1 1/2 miles from my house. This week-end was the 15th Annual Greyhounds Reach the Beach. Every year, at this time of the year, all you see are greyhounds all over the beaches. Owners are not just satisfied with one; they usually have 2 or 3 or even more.
Anyway, this annual event is the largest gathering of retired racing greyhounds in the U.S. It is not a Greyhound Rescue, Inc. event. It is sponsored by the Greyhound Project, Inc., but because they are close, they always have huge numbers of their dogs attending. For more info. on the Greyhound Rescue, Inc., please visit www.greyrescue.org/fun_stuff/reach_the_beach.shtml.
The Greyhound Project, Inc. is a volunteer, non-profit organization, located in Framington, MA, providing information about and promoting the adoption of retired racing greyhounds.
It was founded in 1992. It promotes the welfare and adoption of greyhounds by providing support and information to adoption organizations, adoptees, and the public. Please check them out by visiting www.adopt-a-greyhound.org.
Greyhounds are great family members. They are calm, intelligent and low maintenance. They will share your couch or your jogging with equal enthusiasm.
I rescued my dog, Addy, about a year and half ago. All I can tell you is that she is so sweet and greateful for me giving her a forever home. The rescue organization I used was Paws of Tomorrow, Ocean View, Delaware. Website www.pawsoftomorrow.com.
The first greyhound I encountered in Dewey was Riley. She was so at ease sitting by Grotto Pizza with her owner. I had to take her picture. She looked like a diva with those sunglasses.
Then I saw the other dog who was exhausted after walking up and down the town of Dewey checking out the vendors. Another diva; relaxing.
On the way to the beach I encountered the people from Ohio that have North Coast Greyhound Connection. Their motto? Change a Life… Adopt a Retired Racer…You will Fall in Love… Please check their website www.northcoastgreyhoundconnection.org.
The greyhounds in the picture were all privately owned.
Right on the beach some of the dogs were in the water or just by the water’s edge.
Then, others, were just relaxing with their owners. I met the ladies that owned an Italian greyhound that, by the way, was a little chilly and the other greyhound that did not move even when I took his picture. They were from Long Island.
What a great gathering on such a gorgeous day!!! It did make me smile…talk to you later…
