What’s Happening?, Rehoboth Beach, Activities, Events, Arts, Entertainment, Delaware State Park Activities, Delaware Beaches

I sat last night quietly at my kitchen table.  I was thinking how quickly the summer is going by.  We waited for it throughout the long winter; then, we complain about being too hot, too many people, traffic jams.  Are we ever happy, I ask?  I do all those things myself.  It was about 10:00 p.m. and everything was so still.  I could hear the sounds of critters outside and the sprinklers going off on the golf course.

I did not go into downtown Rehoboth yesterday; don’t know how busy it was.  A lady told me that she did not think this week was busy.  Wrong again.  It really was, but it was such a gorgeous week that they were all at the water’s edge.

If you are enjoying Rehoboth this week, then these might be of interest to you.

Richard Clifton, Artist, Waterfowl Artist, Acrylics, Delaware Artist

When I met him I thought he was quiet and reserved.  But aren’t artists pretty much that way?  They don’t need to make themselves known; their art says it all.

img_4728

I attended an Artist’s Reception last Friday at the offices of Delaware Realty at 117 Savannah Rd., Lewes, DE.

As I entered the offices, Richard Clifton’s paintings were displayed for all of us to see and enjoy.  Cocktails and appetizers were served, as well.

img_4746

img_4743

When I meet someone with such an artistic gift, I find myself at a loss for words, if you can imagine that.  I cannot draw a straight line.

Richard told me that painters are also good photographers.  At times he refers to photos; others are in his memory.

As I looked at the paintings on displayed the waterfowl images were so inspiring and they filled me with awe and wonder.  They were truly beautiful.

Richard is a self-taught artist who chooses acrylics as his medium; the genre of waterfowl is his specialty.  His work has been shown at the country’s finest art shows.  He is one of the tops; all-time list for awards.

Inspiration for his work is drawn from his surroundings.  He lives adjacent to Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge.

In 1991 he won his first duck stamp contest.  The first of many, including Federal Duck Stamps, as well.

“Duck Stamps” are pictorial stamps produced by the U.S. Postal Service for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service; not valid for postage.

Since 1934 the Federal Duck Stamps have been a vital tool for wetland conservation. The program has helped to place over 5 million acres under the protection of U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System.

I had taken some pictures at Silver Lake in Rehoboth Beach.  As I looked at these pictures now, and then see Richard’s paintings, I can’t get over how real his paintings look.  Here are my pictures:

Rehoboth Beach offers its visitors plenty.  It has a beautiful beach, a boardwalk, shops, restaurants; fine dining and junk food, as well.  In the summer, this coastal town is a destination; arts and entertainment being at the head of it all.

I decided to write this post just on the arts and entertainment.  This is in addition to all the venues that offer live music.

Since 1963 Rehoboth Beach has been offering FREE entertainment as part of the Summer Concert Series.  These concerts are held at the bandstand in the Rehoboth Boardwalk.  They start at 8:00 p.m. unless otherwise mentioned.

The friends are:

Dennis Schocket, formerly fronted the Baltimore band, the Rattlecats and currently leads the harmony-laden band, Starbelly.

Pete Wiedmann is in Love Seed Mama Jump, the Delaware band.

Cliff Hillis has been in Philadelphia’s IKE.  He also performs with Eric Bazilian of the Hooters in the Eric Bazilian Band.

A new exhibit just opened:  Skimming the Surface:  Surfing, Skimboarding, and Floating off the Delaware Coast.

The following postcard is of the interior of Surf Shop East, Rehoboth Beach, from the 1960’s.  It is on loan to the Rehoboth Beach Museum from Skip Savage, who owned the shop and who is also in the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame.

Each session will include the screening of a short and a documentary or a feature, time permitting.  Reviewers are asked to complete a rating form and may also join in the post film discussion.

Opus Nine was started in early 2009 by Alysia Lee and Jarvis Benson.  They wanted to start an ensemble that mirrored their lives and represented their generation – to “embrace their differences and work together harmoniously”.

With degrees from such prestigious schools as Julliard and the Peabody Conservatory, members of Opus Nine have performed all across the country, including recitals at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

I remember when I moved to the Delaware Beaches in 1981.  Not much was going on and people would ask “What are you going to do there year-round?”….How times have changed.  Those same people have either bought properties here, have moved here, or can’t wait to visit time and time again….have a good one.

“The Sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”  jacque cousteau

It is so true.  So many times I have met people at the beach and the first thing they say is “I have been coming here for years”, whether it has been with family or friends, the beach brings in all of us feelings of nostalgia and serenity.

Last summer on the Boardwalk

Last summer on the Boardwalk

If you happen to be in Rehoboth Beach this week-end, then get ready because the town of Rehoboth has a lot to offer as the week-end approaches.  I call it “a soft opening”, because the gates will open on Memorial Week-End and the season will formally open then.  Once that happens, this small coastal resort will be non-stop with shopping, arts, entertainment, restaurants; the beach and the boardwalk.

Thursday, 5/19 – All You Can Eat Pancake and Sausage Breakfast and Annual Walk-A-Thon. 8:30 – 11:00 a.m. at the Cape Henlopen Senior Center, 11 Christian St. in Rehoboth Beach.

100_2260

The breakfast is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children under the age of 10.  Then, after eating, the 2 mile Walk-A-Thon begins on the Rehoboth Boardwalk at 9:00 a.m.  That walk is great and don’t forget to touch the end of the boardwalk each way.  That’s a ritual for Boardwalk walkers.  I had to laugh; pancakes, sausage and then walk…or roll, that would be me.

The funds raised will be used to purchase “new” chairs.  For more info. please call 302-227-2055.
