In 2009 I adopted Miss Addy. I call her my princess, best in show, the best and most beautiful dog in the world…all kinds of silly names. Miss Addy is a mutt and a “rescue”. I think she was about a little over a year when I adopted her. Here is her photo. She is a little Diva now. She learned quickly.
Word of mouth is everything. So, when my friend, Renee told me about Doggies at The Beach, I thought it would be the perfect place to leave Miss Addy when I was traveling for a day or overnight. It would give me a piece of mind. Not everyone can or want to travel with their pooches, so be sure when I tell you that they will be well taken care of at Doggies at The Beach.
Doggies at The Beach is located at 18806 John J. Williams Highway (Rt. 24) in Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. Tel. 302-644-8200 Website? http://www.doggiesatthebeach.com. Doggies at The Beach is open 7 days a week. You can leave your dog for overnight care, day care, and grooming. Throughout the year they hold training classes and they also hold vaccination days at a discount rate.
At times, when I come in the customers make me laugh. Here are some of the photos.
There are no cages here. What they do have are 6 separate play areas that are small, medium and large. 24-human supervision is one of the services that they are so proud of. They play with the dogs, take them out for walks and give them a treat here or there, as well.
With 3,500 square feet they have plenty of space for all their customers to have a good time. They will be comfortable since the location is climate controlled and with purified air. There are 5 web cams….just in case you want to follow your pooches daily activities. Names like Little Dippers, Moon Doggies, Big Kahunas are the names they give to the play areas which are assigned according to size. They even have a Puppy Palace, just in case your pooch demands a suite. The last day of your adorable pet stay, they will give him or her a bath…a scarf and they will be ready to go.
Miss Addy just spent a week at Doggies at The Beach, while I was in Charleston. My cousin was so jealous because where she lives she does not have this type of care for her dog. So, when I got a few texts from Doggies at The Beach sending me photos of Miss Addy….she was like….what?
Before you start leaving your pet at Doggies at The Beach there are procedures to follow. A temperament evaluation…no agressive dogs, please. Shots and any other pertinent info. Best if you call them at 302- 644-8200.

If you think your dog is just not having fun, think again, because he or she might might be having more fun!! Talk to you later.

My stay in Historic Charleston, South Carolina, took even longer when my flight was cancelled on Sunday, 3/1. Too bad, to be “stuck” in this historic city for a couple more days. My accommodations for those 2 nights were at the Meeting Street Inn. It is located at 173 Meeting St. Tels. 843-723-1882 and 800-842-8022 Website? http://www.MeetingStreetInn.com
Meeting Street Inn was built in the style of the Charleston single house around 1873. The “Charleston Single” was built from 1740s to the late 1800s. The lots are narrow and the porches were called piazzas by the English. The porches also served as hallways for air circulation.
My cousin and I had eyed this inn during our stay. We even stopped by to check the rooms. I thought that on another trip this would be a nice place to stay. It is within walking distance to everything you want to do in Historic Charleston. They do have a small shuttle that could take you around anywhere you would like to go in town if you don’t feel like walking.
So as I sat at the Charleston Airport wondering what to do…..a call, a reservation, and I was good to go.
Checking into the Meeting Street Inn was easy. The staff was so nice and ready to help in any way. The bed was most comfortable.
Sunday was not a nice day but Monday turned out to be the best day of the week. The Meeting Street Inn has a small pool and also outdoor seating for R & R.
Great to enjoy the outdoors early in the a.m. with coffee and breakfast which by the way is included or wine and appetizers in the evening, also included.
The breakfast is served from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. Hot and cold breakfast service…fruits cereals, buns, etc. etc.
In the evenings wine, cheese and refreshments for the guests from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. Appetizers including the ever present Charleston Cheese Spread which is pimento cheese spread.
I really enjoyed it and until next time….thanks to the Meeting Street Inn staff.

I am not sure if you are ready for shopping or not, but stores are open. Historic Charleston offers great shopping for everyone. If your husband decides that shopping is not his cup of tea on this trip, there are a few places you can park him.
Or if you are traveling with your pooch….have your husband or significant other take him to the dog park and meet other Charleston dogs, while you engage in something a little more interesting.
C’est La Vie of Charleston we found on 108 N. Market St. Tel. 843-212-5744. The owner opened the store last year and is ready for the prime months that Historic Charleston offers its visitors. Good weather, plenty of restaurants, history, shopping….the town, I hear is starting to bloom. You can find C’est La Vie of Charleston on Facebook. Check it out because you can get 10% off purchases until 3/17.
The shopkeepers of Historic Charleston deserve a shout; so friendly!!….Shopping in local boutiques is what I usually like to do. Individual attention is what we want. No rush, please.
The store is eclectic in the sense that you can find gifts for someone special, or just something to thank a friend. Having a party? Cards, napkins, place cards, cups for an event, or just because.
We fell in love with these beads. They are called Chew Beads. They are perfect for the summer. We just did not realize that they are also chewing beads for your little ones. Mothers, grandmothers you can be in style with these ones.
It’s springtime and time to refresh, or update.
If you think about it all boutiques are shops, but not all shops are boutiques. C’est La Vie of Charleston is unique and local!! Stop by and say hello.
Have a good one.

Historic Charleston
Charleston, S.C., is a good place to get “stuck” when your flight is canceled. I did not know I was going back to Charleston so quickly. How lucky, right?
So many restaurants have opened in Charleston since last year. It’s like you don’t know which one to choose….and then, everyone that has been to Charleston will tell you where to go, what to eat….don’t forget this or that. I am doing the same thing.
On my book there are 5 “ingredients” to a good restaurant: Culinary Competence, Quality of Ingredients, Ambiance, Service, and Price. Which means you want the best chefs or cooks, depending how you want to call yourselves, fresh ingredients, ambiance conducive to conversation, personal service and a good price. I found S.N.O.B.
Slightly North Of Broad, or, S.N.O.B., is located at 192 East Bay Street. Tel. 843-723-3424 Website? http://www.mavericksouthernkitchens.com/slightlynorthofbroad. This restaurant is owned by the Maverick Southern Kitchen Group, with other restaurants such as High Cotton in Greenville, and Charleston, Old Village Post House in Mount Pleasant, and Charleston Cooks! They have gluten free menus available!!
I arrived at 11:50 a.m. I thought I would be the first one there. Oh, no. The dining room was full. Then, I was told that there was a seat available at the Chef’s Table. Are you kidding?…another lucky day. The dining room is an extension of the kitchen. The Chef’s Table is long and seats 6 guests. To my left there were 2 gentlemen, and to my right a couple who knew the Executive Chef, and another guest.
The corn bread was warm and came in a sweet grass basket. Perfect addition to my soup.
Checking out what everyone was having I noticed the huge portion of moist meatloaf. But, I wanted something different like their Curried Chickpea Soup with Cabbage and Currants. Totally delish, well seasoned and comforting.
I am always on a culinary journey. The blending of flavors get my tastebuds doing that je ne sais quai. Originally, I was going to order the fried chicken livers on grits…..then, my question was: What is your signature dish? No hesitation; the Maverick Shrimp & Grits. That did it. A signature dish that everyone comes to enjoy. I wanted it.
The gentleman on my left said to me that his hotel had said S.N.O.B. had the best shrimp and grits. So, check out my plate….shrimp, home sausage, country ham, freshy tomatoes, green onions, garlic and Geechie Boy yellow grits.
Geechie Boy Yellow Grits are ground in historic mills in Edisto Island, S.C…..Local!!
No dessert was necessary, I was totally satisfied……the gentleman at the end of the table…I believe his name was George was having a coconut ice cream, which he said was the best. He visits S.N.O.B. at least 3 times per week. He considers their cooking one of the best anywhere by far. That’s a local’s review for you.
Guilty…..the reason I was not having dessert is because I was going to a cooking class next door at Charleston Cooks in about an hour and a half. Yikes…
Note: The BB & T Charleston Wine & Food Festival is March 4th until the 8th…this coming week-end. It is in its 10th year. It celebrates Lowcountry Cuisine with James Beard Award winning chefs from around the country, as well as the region’s best. Please check http://www.charlestonwineandfood.com.
When is Spring getting here???
February 19th, 2015
I am praying that it gets a little warmer at the Delaware Beaches…..but I remember well a couple of weeks ago when visiting Puerto Rico we went to the Mercado Urbano or Urban Market that takes place at Ventana al Mar (Window to the Sea) on Ashford Avenue in Condado the first Sunday of every month. A popular place to be in order to get up close and personal with many local artists….and taste that delicious Puertorican food.
The rosaries did attract our attention. They were beautiful. Meet the artist behind Carla’s Rosaries and bracelets…Carla. Very friendly and most accommodating. So many of us asking questions…could you add this other medal or replace this one for that one. With a smile on her face she obliged.
Carla’s Rosaries are sold in Puerto Rico at Carla’s Sweets in Guaynabo and at Carla’s Sweets cart at Plaza Las Americas in Hato Rey. Please visit http://www.carlasrosaries.com. Tel. 787-792-9777 You can find Carla’s Rosaries on Facebook, as well. Please note that Carla’s Rosaries can be purchased online.
Carla is also the baker behind Carla’s Sweets. So successful in San Juan. I will have to try them next time, but in the meantime you may visit http://www.carlassweets.com. Shop online, shipping available.
Carla’s Rosaries and bracelets are made with semi-precious stones. The metals are not silver, but alloy and pewter. With time the rosaries will take a “vintage” look. With a bit of care they can last you a lifetime.
Please open http://www.carlasrosaries.com, to read about her story. At times when a door closes, another opens. It was pretty much the case for her. Going through a difficult time in her life, she went to a family retreat. She stated that during the retreat she felt anxious….a couple acknowledged the fact that praying had changed their lives. Carla started to cry. Some began to pray for her and gave her a Rosary, blessed by the Virgin of Medugorje. They also gave her the novena of the Divine Mercy, which is supposed to be prayed at 3:00 p.m. Her story is passionate, she is devout of the Divine Mercy, very spiritual, and very much at peace.
Carla wanted to wear a rosary, not in a traditional way. She loves accessories….so Carla’s Rosaries began. Carla’s Rosaries can be worn in a traditional way, or you can wear them like a scarf…worn like that by Carla on the above photos.
The Mercardo Urbano or Urban Market will be at Ventana al Mar on Sunday, March 1st, and you can be sure that Carla’s Rosaries and bracelets will be making a statement like they usually do.
Note: You may have your rosary blessed.

“”Winter is a season of recovery and preparation.” paul theroux
I think about this quote as I walked the award-winning Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk, with my friend, Gail. Winter is a season of recovery for the beaches. A time to sit back and relax. With Spring and Summer just a few months away, not only does the town take a serene look, but the residents do so, as well.
Even though Gail and I were commenting how quiet it was on the Boardwalk, we agreed that listening to the sound of the waves was pretty awesome and….we are lucky to live here.
We decided to have lunch at Semra’s, located at 19 Rehoboth Avenue. As quiet as it looked on the Boardwalk, the Avenue was as crowded as it usually gets during winter. Semra’s only closes on Wednesdays. The rest of the week they are open. Tel. 302-226-4976. Website? http://www.semras.com. For the last minute events and dining specials you can visit them on Facebook.
Today, Friday, is Falafel Fridays. Falafel are fritters; balls or patties made, usually, with ground chickpeas, but also fava beans can be used, as well. Yum!
On Mondays their Musakka entree is only $10.95. And, on Tuesdays their Kabobs are 30% off.
I told Gail to order their Turkish Musakka. It is different from the traditional Greek one. It is not layered. Instead, it is prepared with aubergines, green peppers, tomatoes, and onions. Served with a well seasoned pilaf…pita bread. The side dish is cacik which is a strained yogurt served cold.
I decided to have Kofte. These are beef and lamb patties seasoned with Turkish herbs and spices, served with pilaf and cacik (yogurt sauce), and a cold bean salad.
Semra’s makes everything from scratch. Their dishes are full of flavor and exotic spices. Our dishes were light…..yes, they were!! And, the tea warmed us up on a damp winter day in Rehoboth Beach.
Once a month Semra’s has a dinner and belly dancing show. What started just to see if it would work out, now is a much waited event. Next one will be on February 28th!! They tell me the place turns itself into a big party with lots of customers participating and enjoying the fun. You can call them to 302-226-4976 for a reservation.
Note: Prices are good, with personal service!! They do have a liquor license. Carry-out available. You will love it!

“There is a difference between dining and eating. Dining is an art. When you eat to get the most out of your meal, to please the palate, just as well as to satiate the appetite, that my friend, is dining.” yuan mei, 1936
Michy’s opened last year in Rehoboth Beach. All of a sudden the parking lot where the Food Lion is located was more crowded than usual…….and that was the scene all summer long. Still, in the Second Season at the Delaware Beaches, reservations are a must at Michy’s. The address is 19287 Miller Rd. #17. Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. Tel. 302-227-0999. Website? http://www.michysrelaxeddining.com. They close on Monday. Tues through Thursday they open from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. and on Sunday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Our reservations was for an early dinner with Debbie, Jody, and Debbie K. These friends are part of my group called “the usual suspects”. They know me well. They wait for me to take photos. Nobody dares to start eating even though they might be dying to. Laughing is part of getting together. Catching up on our lives is always fun.
Michy’s has a colorful look throughout the restaurant. Sorry….it was crowded and for privacy I decided that only photos of our food would do on this evening. The ususual suspects had already dined at Michy’s, not me, though.
I had heard a lot about this new restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised by the service, the food, the ambiance, and the prices.
Arriving at the table was bread, olive oil and balsamic.
The Fire Cracker Shrimp were so delicious and plenty for sharing. They were tempura battered, sriracha mayo, scallions and crushed peanuts. Cannot wait to have them again.
We all had different entrees, which is great when trying a new restaurant. By the way, the usual suspects loved their dining choices.
Crab Crusted Mahi Mahi had asparagus, wild mushrooms, basil, cherry tomato, and red potato.
Day Boat Sea Scallops on wild mushroom, truffle-pea risotto, shaved parmesan and basil.
The Barramundi Bass was colorful, simple and so tasty. It was pan seared, topped with salsa cruda, vine ripe tomato, roasted pepper, kalamata olives, garlic, capers, basil, over jasmine rice.
My dish was the Salmon, horseradish crusted, over lemon basil rice, with a side order of soy baby bok choy, mirin, wine sauce and toasted panko. I love salmon and order it every time I see on the menu. This one was very good and would not hesitate to order it again.
Even though we were all more than satisfied, a sweet ending for sharing was necessary…..the strawberry dessert was just exactly what was needed…4 spoons.
To tell you the truth, I cannot wait to go back!! Talk to you later!!
Tip: It seems that Michy’s gets crowded for early dinner, but if you like to eat a bit later in the evening, go after 7:30 p.m. and it will be a very relaxing dining experience.

I have written before about this restaurant that is all the rave in Coastal Delaware. It is located at The Village of Fenwick at 300 Coastal Highway, Unit #7. Tel. 302-581-0217. Website? http://www.flyingfishfenwick.com. It is open Wednesday through Sunday, at this time of the year, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. or so. Reservations are accepted and carryout is available. Check the website for more info. and details on their menu.
It was the perfect early evening to have something light to eat after the Thanksgiving dining etravaganza. It really did feel so good. Light, tasty, great atmosphere, fantastic service, small and intimate.
An order of sashimi black snapper. The sauce was a ponzu sauce that was awesome and different!! Craig, our server, suggested it and it really was that good.
An order of Avocado Roll, another order of The Bangkok Dangerous, which was flash fried tuna and salmon roll topped with a unique muddled pepper blend, lump crab, spicy mayo, and their sweet special and spicy Bangkok sauce, and an order of the Bermuda Roll…shrimp, toasted coconut, avocado, and pineapple roll with a miso drizzle.
My order consisted of the following: The Citrus Salmon Roll had shrimp, avocado, yuzu mayo, and bits rolled and draped with seared salmon toro, shiso, and tobiko. The other roll was The Eel Deal; flash fried avocado and tamago roll topped with spicy mayo, tobiko, and crispy BBBQ eel. Both delicious rolls and again, thanks to Craig for helping in the suggestions. Please note that the word shiso, which I did not know what it was, means an herb also known as Japanese basil. It has a mixture of flavors…hints of basil, mint and cumin.
An early evening, a carryout order and back to Rehoboth Beach….good food will travel!!
