Missy, Debbie, and I made it after we had found out that their ice cream is from Hopkins Farm Creamery in Lewes. This ice cream is so good, you have to try it yourselves. Caution: You’ll be hooked!!

The origins of the Delaware State Fair go back 95 years when it started as a way to promote and encourage agriculture and to have something fun for the rural communities within Delaware. It is a true American Classic. When it opened its doors on July 27th, 1920, admission was 25 cents for children 6 to 12 and 50 cents for adults. Parking was 25 cents. The Fair had a net profit of $43.90. The phrase “Bigger and Better Than Ever” came because after such a success, plans were in place to make it “Bigger and Better Than Ever” the following year. And….the Fair continues bringing residents and visitors a time of pure family fun.

Big smiles on their faces as the Delaware State Fair opened on Thursday with new additions of vendors, a new free App., a finished Plaza, cool lights, and a Beer and Wine Garden called The Roost! I have to admit that I am embarrassed to say that I had never attended the Delaware State Fair. So, I was excited when Susan called me on Thursday to see if I wanted to go to the opening of this popular fair at this time of the year. I seized the moment….gorgeous weather. It was going to be great. Wearing comfortable clothing and shoes, Susan and I took off for Harrington at around 4:30 p.m. to enjoy, eat, stroll, and join the festivities.
I did not know it was that big. Over 70 rides in total. Exhibits of every kind, animals, carnival exhibits, you name it…..the parade!!
Okay, the first thing Susan and I noticed was the Fried Bubble Gum….we were not even 15 minutes inside and we had to stop and check it out. The Fried Bubble Gum is a marsmallow covered in a bubble gum coating that is deep fried and tastes like it. Then, we also had an order of the Fried Cookie Dough, and the fried oreo cookie that I think was called the Alligator Eggs. We should have had them for dessert and not as an appetizer.
The Chicken on a Stick caught my attention and this happy customer was more than eager to pose for the camera.
Music, banging or something was going on at The Plaza….open air, entertaining the visitors was JunkRock. This band is completely made out of recycled material. They were pretty good and will be at the Fair the whole week. They were also teaching the young ones the importance of recycling. More info? Please visit http://www.junkrockband.com.
Throughout the Fair there are plenty of Exhibit Halls.
 Cooking Demonstration These quilts were 70 years old and already had been awarded First and Second prizes.
Pastries and baked good also had been entered in competition…..this cake was so cute and depicted the farming and livestock atmosphere of the Fair.
I could not tell why one would take the first prize vs. the second…..to an untrained eye, they looked the same.
Susan and I continued to stroll the Fair and its halls. Look at these amazing sunflowers!
There are so many livestock events. On the first day of the Fair, not all the animals were there, but everyone was getting ready. Delaware’s young ones take pride in raising quality livestock…hogs, sheep, goats, steer, horses. If you have children, please stop by the Children’s Barnyard….these piglets decided that they were no going to look at the camera.
At 7 p.m. every night you will have the opportunity to enjoy the Parade. What’s a fair without it? Tractors, bands, carriages, and floats.
A stop at Big Al’s for a roast beef sandwich….Susan went searching for fries, and then wood fired pizza from Fundaro’s.
 Well Done!! Off to The Roost…..the new Beer & Wine Garden making an appearance at the Delaware State Fair. You may bring your food in and relax while sipping your favorite beer and wine. Various wines and beers are from the local region, as well as domestic favorites. The Roost is located south of the Dover Building on Smith Street and opens at 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. Susan and I made ourselves comfortables enjoying our taste of the Fair and loving those lights on the tables.
 
Nothing like a good rodeo at the Delaware State Fair….it was such a beautiful evening in Kent County!! This is also the stage for the concerts that will be taking place during the week.
Getting into the Carnival mood is easy….so, off we went to meet Tina who was only 29 inches tall.
And, then we met Donna who was the “Snake Child”….Bill conversed with them like he knew them all his life.
Susan and I continued with Bill to stroll the Delaware State Fair. I think I was fascinated with it because in a time when all you hear is “bad news” broadcasted in all mediums, being at the fair its like becoming a kid again…clean fun. The music coming from The Grand Master Band Organ located on the Plaza was beautiful. This is the largest concert band organ currently traveling in the U.S. It is also the only organ in the world that was built by American and European craftsmen. It was finished in 2007 and can reproduce a range of sounds that have never been played on a Band Organ before. More info? Please visit http://www.grandmasterbandorgan.com. The night was coming to an end for us. People were walking and enjoying the low humidity and cooler temperatures. At night the Delaware State Fair takes a festive aura.
There are about 70 rides. Susan and I decided a ride on the Ferris Wheel would be the perfect ending at the Delaware State Fair. I had not been on one since I was a young girl.
The view from the top was….priceless!!
And, if you encounter problems at the Fair….law enforcement will be ready to help you….hope you go and visit.

Awesome day in Delmarva!! Low Humidity, blue skies….and it is Summer 2014! You might be at the beach, or gardening or just plain doing nothing at all. A couple of weeks ago the day was the same and my friend, Debbie K, called me and we wanted to play tourist. Enjoying the beautiful day we took off, unexpectedly, for the Lobster Shanty located on Rt. 54 in Fenwick Island, Delaware. Tel. 302-436-2305. Website? http://www.twiningshanty.com.
The Lobster Shanty opened its doors in 2010. It is owned by restauranteurs David and Janet Twinings. It really does have awesome views of the bay and marshes from most of the tables, including an open air sunset bar. Check the scenery because during different times of the day you may see herons, egrets and the creatures that make the bay marsh their own habitat.
The location is just a few miles west of Fenwick Island on Rt. 54…over the “bridge”. The Lobster Shanty can get pretty crowded, but on that particular day, at lunch time, we were lucky because it was quiet and had the perfect lunch…seafood was on our minds.
The bar is huge and also has that magnificent view. The restaurant opens for lunch and dinner and happy hour. You can make reservations by calling the above mentioned telephone number.
My friend, Debbie K, had the best salad….It was called the Lobster & Shrimp Salad. It was almost enough for 2 people. The salads were served over field greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion and seasonal fruits….dressed with their own maple vinaigrette dressing. It was so pretty!
My Lobster Salad Roll did not disappoint…it was, definitely, a perfect summer dish. It had knuckle and claw lobster, a little Helman’s, their own seasonings…..shhhhhh a secret, and an originial New England buttered grilled roll.
Debbie K and I caught up with each other lives and decided that we are lucky to live here at the Delaware Beaches….and, do not take it for granted.
Our lunch was very reasonable, our services was attentive, and we thoroughly enjoyed it!!
And as we drove on the ocean front road in Fenwick…..look at this! One lot back from being ocean front.

Meet the ladies behind Chicks for Charity Southern Delaware. On the left is Kari Ainsworth, and on the right is Marcie Urgo. Both of them support the charitable organizations in Southern Delaware and on July of 2010 they decided to start their own. On the first charity dinner, there were only about 20 or 25 people. They knew that was a start; taking those first baby steps. Congratulations!! 4 years making a difference in the community!
Chicks for Charity….thrilled to announced that they have surpassed the goals they set themselves to achieve on that July of 2010. Last night, July 15th, look at the crowds…..and take notice….guys were in attendance!!
Once a month Chicks for Charity holds a charitable dinner at Fish On, located at the Villages of Five Points in Lewes, Delaware. For $25.00 you will get a buffet dinner with appetizer and dessert. There is also a Cash Bar available. And, a 50/50 plus raffle items!!

Tuesday evening brought the children to fundraise for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This non-profit organization started years ago when a girl with cancer by the name of Alexandra “Alex” Scott decided to start fundraising so that doctors could find a cure for childhood cancer. She passed away in 2004 but her family continues in this effort. At the moment over $80 million have been raised throughout the United States…..as the saying goes “When life throws you lemons….it is time to make Lemonade”. More info? The tables were full of raffle items ranging from restaurant certificates, jewelry, services, and plenty of items for the young ones, as well.
Mingling, chatting, and meeting new friends, while raising funds for those that are underserved, and in need. That’s what these evenings are all about; plain and simple.

Grace is now 10 and is cancer free!! Her sister Abby and her friend, Carly, work Alex’s Lemonade Stand in the area. Please take notice that on Saturday, August 2nd, at the Toy Store in Rehoboth Beach, they will be serving Lemonade to those thirsty visitors and residents. You will also find them on Wednesday, August 10th, at the Grub Grocer on Rehoboth Avenue, and later on Saturday, September 13th, they will be at Giant on Coastal Highway. When you see the following sign, please stop by, have a glass of lemonade, knowing that you are helping to find a cure for childhood cancers.

Lewes, Delaware is the oldest settlement in Delaware. It was founded by the Dutch in 1631. It does have a nickname; “The First Town in the First State”. The town was incorporated in 1883. Plenty to do in this coastal town that provides acess to the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean beaches.

July’s charity dinner will benefit: Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This foundation emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). At the age of 4, while receiving chemo, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help her doctors find a cure for all children with cancer. Between the time of her first stand and the time of her death, when she was 8 years old, Alex reached her goal…she raised $1,000,000. The foundation is led by her parents and bearing her name has raised more than $80 million, funding more than 450 research projects nationally.

What’s Happening at Canalfront Park? The site of the Canalfront Park was a center of activity from the time the earliest Dutch settlers built their homes and launched their ships there in 1631. For hundreds of years the local fishermen kept their boats there. Nowadays, it is also a center for the residents and visitors to enjoy a most scenic part of Historic Lewes.

What’s Going On?
Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge is a 10,144 acre refuge. It is a stopover site for migratory birds as they fly up and down the Atlantic Flyway. Hundreds of native plant and animal species thrive in this habitat. Prime Hook provides habitat for 308 species of birds, 51 species of fish, 45 species of reptiles and amphibians, 37 species of mammals, and an array of rare insects and plant species.
Plenty of activities are offered, including lectures, bird walks and educational activities. The refuge may be visited 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset 7 days a week.

8 a.m. – 11 a.m. – BIRDING FIELD TRIP AT PRIME HOOK – Led by volunteer birding guides, beginner and experienced bird watchers will enjoy observing and learning about the bird species frequenting the refuge at this time of the year. Be prepared for the weather and expect to walk about a mile. Take your binoculars, a filed guide, and spotting scope. The leader will also have spotting scopes available. Binoculars will be available to borrow. Meet at the refuge office. Trips are free, open to the public, and will last approx. 3 hours.
1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. – PONDSIDE ADVENTURES AT PRIME HOOK – Discover what types of fish and aquatic insects live in the area during this hands-on exploration of refuge waters. Help pull the seine net or scoop a dip net to see what they catch. Footwear is required; sunscreen and hats are recommended for this wet and wild activity! Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the refuge office.

I love Greek food!! And, this week-end is the 25th Annual Ocean City Greek Festival, sponsored by St. George Greek Orthodox Church. The festival will have entertainment, authentic Greek food, and unique vendors.
It will take place at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center at 41st Street and Coastal Highway in Ocean City. Saturday: Noon until 11 p.m. Sunday: Noon until 9 p.m. Parking is free, air-conditioned hall is handicap accessible. Credit cards are accepted at the festival and there is also ATM availability.
Admission: Noon to 4 p.m. daily is free for locals and children under 14 years of age. Others $2/person. Late admission after 4 p.m. is $3/person and children under 14 are free.

Boy that was good!! Yum! I am referring to my Chilled Honeydew Cucumber & Avocado Soup. It had pureed cucumber, avocado, melon, vegetable stock, and rice wine vinegar. It was also topped with a herb and citrus creme fraiche and pumpkin seeds. This particular soup was gluten free and vegetarian.
I was going to the Post Office in Bethany Beach when I saw that 14 Global was open for lunch. Surprise, surprise….I was hungry and it was well past lunch time. 14 Global is located at 14 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Bethany Beach, DE 19930. Tel. 302-616-1035. Website? http://www.14global.com.
Of course, I had to go in…I was not the only one that was hungry. One of my “Usual Suspects” was passing by and pretty soon she was also ordering lunch. 14 Global is very pretty inside. The restaurant is nicely appointed with beautiful woods, utilizing the maximum space available.
14 Global is comfortable and the set-up is conducive to friendly chat. A bar is also available for just having a few drinks, or even sitting down for lunch or dinner.
The restaurant opens for lunch Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Global Plates are not offered for lunch, but believe me there is plenty on the lunch menu to choose from. No lunch on Wednesday. Hours for lunch are 11:30 until 2:00 p.m. Dinner is offered from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. every day.
Reservations are taken for their early seating…5 p.m. – 6 p.m. only. But, if you do happen to have a large party of 8 or more, please call for reservation availability and for later seating, as well.
14 Global offers gluten free, and vegetarian items. And, there is also a Kids’ Menu.
Debbie ordered their Baywater Micro Green Salad with a blackberry balsamic reduction, a variety of mini greens, shaved candy striped beets, red onion, angel peach, avocado, Rogue blue cheese, and candied walnuts.
And, she also ordered the Grilled Asparagus & Prosciutto with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, lemon juice, and cracked pepper.
Besides the soup I raved about on the first sentence of this post, I also ordered their Baywater Micro Green Salad, except that I topped it with a softshell crab….one of my favorite crabs. It had a very light breading and flash fried….perfectly seasoned.
No dessert was needed….we told our served, which by the way was very attentive, that we were on diets…..he did say we looked good!
