I think I am curious, definitely…The First Town in The First State!!  So much history, connecting the past with the present.

The Lewes Historical Society, http://www.historiclewes.org, will be hosting Delmarva Historic Haunts, http://www.delmarvahistorichaunts.com, to explore the curious happenings in Historic Lewes, Delaware.  You do not have to walk far to be immersed in the history of Lewes.

On 2nd and Market Streets you will find Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church.  The Parish was established in 1681 and it does have the oldest cemetery in Delaware.  You can visit the cemetery….plenty of visitors do.

dscn5847

The CANNONBALL HOUSE – It was built around 1765.  It is now the home of The Lewes Historical Society’s Maritime Museum.  It is a rare example of a Lewes house remaining on one site its entire existence.  Location?  The corner of Bank Street and Front Street.

dscn5881

The rest of the tour will take place visiting the Museums of The Lewes Historical Society at the Historic Complex.  There are 9 buildings dating from the mid 1600’s to the late 1800’s. Location?  110 Shipcarpenter Street.

dscn5872

BURTON-INGRAM HOUSE –  It dates to 1789.  It is noted for the fine Federal period and colonial furnishings.  This is an elegant home with several extraordinary museum pieces.

dscn5875

OLD DOCTOR’S OFFICE – Circa 1840.  It houses collections of mid to late nineteenth century medical instruments.  It is the only example of Greek Revival architecture in Lewes.  It cannot be confirmed if it was the only building of that style constructed in Lewes.  It contains about 500 volumes of medical texts.

dscn5878

RABBIT’S FERRY HOUSE – It dates to around 1740.  This house is an example of rural Sussex County architecture.  It reflects the hard and simple life of Southern Delaware’s 18th century farmers.  This house if the home of the Lewes Historical Society’s fine collection of 18th century kitchen ware and furnishings.

You have the town, the experts and the buildings to become a paranormal investigator if only for a few hours…..have a great time!!

Good Morning Rehoboth Beach!!, Coffee, The Coffee Mill, Muffins, Scrapple Chipotle Cheese Muffins, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

The sun is not even out, and who knows how the weather will be today, but the start of a Sunday morning or any morning for that matter, in Rehoboth Beach is with a cup of mocha from one of my favorites…The Coffee Mill.  It is located at 127-B Rehoboth Avenue in the Rehoboth Mews.  Tel. 302-227-7530.  Website?  http://www.cofffeemillrehoboth.com.

dscn5914

I missed the Apple Scrapple Festival in Bridgeville, Delaware this year.  And, the weather did not cooperate either.  But, I decided to pay homage to another favorite….Scrapple.  My Scrapple Chipotle Cheese Muffins recipe is one of those that is, definitely, a little bit of this, and a little bit of that.  In my kitchen I found gluten free, flour, and in the refrigerator I found, eggs, cheese, evaporated milk, onions, pickled jalapenos and….imagine this….Rapa Chile Chipotle Scrapple!!  These were going to be some hot muffins!!

dscn5904

I sliced half a pound of the scrapple and proceeded to fry it in the pan.

dscn5905

Chop half of an onion and saute in the same frying pan.  Add about 1/4 cup or more of chopped pickled jalapenos.  Add the chopped scrapple and mix it all in.  Let the flavors mingle…haha.  Turn heat off and just let them rest.  In the meantime, pre-heat  oven to 350 degrees.

dscn5906

To make it easier, use a muffin mix or pancake mix.  I used a gluten free Bisquik mix…about 1 1/2 cups.  You can follow the recipe on the box or just add one egg, milk to make it thicker than pancake mix, the scrapple mixture, 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese.  My muffin pan was deep, so I only got 6 large muffins.  Fill them, sprinkle with extra cheese, and bake in the oven for about half hour to 40 minutes, again, depending on your muffin pan and until the knife inserted comes out clean.

dscn5907dscn5908

Out of the pan and into a plate….they disappeared quickly.

dscn5909

The idea is that when you bite into the muffin you can get the flavors of the scrapple, onions, cheese and jalapenos….spicy but pretty good.  Now make them your own!!

dscn5911

Please note that this recipe is not gluten free.  Scrapple has gluten.  Too bad.

Have a good one!

Liquid Assets, Ocean City, Maryland, Restaurant, Liquour Store, Full Bar, Review, Best Pan Roasted Mussels!! Ocean City Restaurant Week, Sunday, 10/13 – Sunday, 10/27!! One Price, 2 Weeks!

dscn5903

The beginning of a Nor’ Easter, along the Mid Atlantic Seaboard, did not deter Jody and I from driving from Rehoboth Beach to Ocean City, Maryland.  Along the way we picked one of my usual suspects in Bethany Beach, who is always ready to come along for a dining experience.  But, wait a minute…it was Debbie’s birthday!!

img_7231

Rain, wind, and not too many on the road…we made it to Liquid Assets located mid town, at 9301 Coastal Highway, in Ocean City, Maryland.  Tel 410-524-7037.  Website?  http://www.ocliquidassets.com.  There is no other restaurant up and down the Delaware and Maryland beaches that compare to Liquid Assets.  It is a package goods store, a bar, a restaurant….serving delicious food.  Sit among the bottles of wines or choose a more quiet ambiance in their separate dining room.  We sat among the sofas, and the bottles of liquour.

dscn5889

It was our evening and chatting away we began our dining experience with a beautiful presentation of a cheese board.  Midnight Moon, Goat Cheese, and Gouda were our choices.

dscn5893

It is that time of the year when pumpkins are in every recipe.  They are also in drinks….The Great Pumkin’ Martini at Liquid Assets looked so gorgeous.  A sip of it told me that it could go down very smoothly.  It had Spice Liqueur, Fireball Whiskey, Cream, and 43.

dscn5890dscn5892

A few small plates of scallops.

dscn5898

The roasted veggies were a hit!!

dscn5897

The beets had a wonderful flavor!

dscn5895

The best Pan Roasted Mussels Bar None!!  Chorizo Sausage, Shallots, Garlic & Grilled Bread!!  How yummy is that? I can attest to this because ever since I had them at Liquid Assets, I have tried mussels at every restaurant.  I have been wanting to see if they measured up to Liquid Assets’.  I have found good ones, but not amazing ones!!  It is one of my favorite dishes and once again I requested a spoon so I could finish the broth!!  Look how gorgeous they looked.

dscn5899

Dessert was a Flourless Chocolate Brownie, topped with vanilla bean ice cream and creamy chocolate sauce…..This dessert was Gluten Free!!  Dense brownie full of flavor.

dscn5900

Love the Calamari Taco, Where? Modern Mixture, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware….Yum!! Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

I opened Facebook and saw that Leo was announcing that he has a Calamari Special for $9 with Iced Tea!  Okay, on Monday evening I went to Modern Mixture, which is located at 62A Rehoboth Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-0600.  Website?  http://www.modern-mixture.com.

dscn5830

I have written plenty of times about Modern Mixture, its owner, Leo, and his staff….now let me tell you about this Calamari Taco.  It is out of this world.  The Chimichurri Sauce adds to an already well seasoned and crispy calamari. You are going to love it.  Add the baby kale salad and you have a meal.

The Torta was delicious, as well.  Marilyn added a Margarita to spice things up!!

dscn5829

Not one, but 2 desserts.  The desserts at Modern-Mixture are perfect for sharing.

The cake…this is only half of it.

dscn5831

The Chocolate Mousse…took some home.

dscn5833

It’s raining, it’s pouring…what else are going to do?  Have a good one!!

Shopping, Deanna’s, Historic Lewes, Delaware, Women’s Apparel, Casual Clothing, Accessories, Shoes, Shop Local, Tax Free, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

I bumped into Deanna as I was taking pictures of a beautiful day in Lewes.  The weather was a bit cooler and I am, definitely, ready for it…and what a difference a few days make.

I followed Deanna into her own store….Deanna’s, located at 111-113 Second Street, Lewes, DE 19958.  Tel. 302-644-1112.  Second Street in Historic Lewes is Main Street.  Lots of shops and restaurants are found on this street and surrounding streets, as well.

dscn5850

It seems like it was just yesterday but Deanna has had her store for about 19 years.  The store has merchandise catering to a wide range of ages.  You will find Deanna and Ashley, her daughter, receiving customers, chatting with them, and making them feel at home as they shop in a store that has all those indispensables that we love here at the beaches.  And if you are shopping with your significant other….there is a nice comfortable sofa to make him feel at home or if you want to rest a bit.

Casual clothing, jeans and sweaters.

dscn5849dscn5867

Shoes…summer and winter.

dscn5863dscn5856

Dresses….

dscn5857dscn5862

Perfect for this time of the year…These long tees are flying out of the store.

dscn5851dscn5852

For the little ones….look what I found!

dscn5860

So, remember that in spite of the rain…the stores are open, tax free shopping in Delaware and Columbus Week-End is Here!!  And, are the Sales!

Dining, Henlopen City Oyster House, Restaurant, Review, The Second Season, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware,

dscn9864dscn9844

Cathy and I decided to stop for something to eat at one of the most popular restaurants in this coastal town…Henlopen City Oyster House.  It is located on 50 Wilmington Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-260-9193.  Website?  http://www.hcoysterhouse.com.  Open for lunch and dinner…no reservations.

It was surprising to see Rehoboth Beach so crowded on a Tuesday night.  Almost no parking…can you believe it?  It is a thing of the past when Rehoboth Beach used to roll up its sidewalks until the following season.  No way…this is a year-round resort.  Very vibrant, offering its visitors and residents something to do, practically every night of the week.

I love this restaurant….it never disappoints.  Fresh seafood, salty oysters, beer, specialty drinks, and wine.

A Fruit and Nut Salad offered sliced apple, five spice pumpkin seeds, candied walnuts, dried cherries, bleu cheese, and a while balsamic dressing.  A substantial salad full of flavor.

dscn5882

I love beets and their Roasted Beet salad contained sunflower seeds, pickled radish, feta cheese, mixed greens, drizzled with a balsamic reduction.  Very good!!

dscn5883

The Herb Grilled Maryland Rockfish was ordered by Cathy and it was grilled and lightly brushed with an herb olive oil, served with her choide of seasonal veggies and braised kale.  Seasoned to perfection!

dscn5885

I ordered the Sesame & Spice Seared New Zealand Hapuka Seabass with spicy coconut green bamboo rice, lobster mushrooms, zipper peas, grilled long beans, and a cashew curry sauce.   All those combinations gave this dish an array of flavors that were truly delicious.

dscn5886

Even though the desserts can be tempting at Henlopen City Oyster House, we were very satisfied.  Perhaps another time.

Talk to you later….have a good one!!

Seagrapes, Fruit, Tropical, Coastal Plant, South Florida, Caribbean…Uvas Playeras, Love Seagrapes!! Don’t just look at them…Eat Them!!

Uvas Playeras…that’s what they called them in Spanish.  I grew up in the Island of Puerto Rico, where Seagrapes were very common.  I used to eat them right from the tree, not giving it another thought.

Many years later, as I became a frequent visitor to South Florida, I noticed that the Seagrape plant was used a lot in their landscaping.  Seagrapes are highly tolerant of salt and heat.  That’s why this plant is also so abundant in the Caribbean.

Depending what month I found myself in South Florida, I always looked for the fruit that might be in season.  Something different from what I would find at the Delaware Beaches, where I reside.  At times, it might be avocado, mango, or tamarind.

A few weeks ago I was in Delray Beach.  It was a time for Seagrapes.  They were everywhere.  It is a messy tree since the fruit falls off very easily once it is ripe.

The biggest tree I have seen so far was in Delray Beach, and it was full of seagrapes.  Check out this photo.

dscn5577

At first the fruit is very green and it does look so pretty on the trees.  You have to be patient and wait until the end of summer when the Seagrapes will ripen.

dscn5576

Seagrapes are in the buckwheat family.  They protect beaches from coastal winds.  In Delray Beach, they also protect the sea turtles.

dscn5638

So, as I was walking early in the morning in Delray, I was prepared, carrying my plastic bag to gather some of these Seagrapes.  I have never seen anyone picking them….only me.  A few gave me that look, wondering “what the heck is she doing?”  You want the Seagrapes to be as dark as possible…a purplish color!!  That’s when they will be sweet and tart at the same time.

dscn5645

Seagrapes have a pit that takes almost the whole fruit.  They say you can make jam and even wine.  But, I will tell you this…I cannot imagine how hard it will be to take that pulp.  Not me, I just pop them in my mouth, play around with them, and then….yes, spit them out!!  Not very ladylike, but that’s what I do.

Now don’t they look beautiful?  I ate them all…so good.  Don’t just look at them…eat them!!

dscn5650

Talk to you later…have a good one!!
