Shoehorns, Shoespooners, Hard to Find when You Live at the Delaware Beaches!, “No Gentleman’s Wardrobe is Complete Without a Shoe Horn”, Handy at Airports

dscn3265

Shoehorns are hard to find at the beach because the attire is usually casual; sandals…not too much of a need for shoehorns.  Stop right there…

I don’t know why but my family always sends me on these quests….I, at times, find myself looking for Twinkies, which turned into a fiasco since Twinkies are back on the market, and I ate the ones I thought were going to take me to the bank.  Other times spending the day traveling for Joe Flacco’s signature.  And there have been others.

The latest has been looking for an extra shoe horn.  My husband has been asking me to find a shoe horn to keep in the office.  Finally, today, I could not take it any longer.  If he asked me one more time..I was going to scream.

All I wanted to do was take pictures of the beautiful azaleas in Rehoboth Beach and check the Farmers’ Market.  That’s my next post…the shoe horn got my attention, afterall.

I found that the word shoehorn is spelled as a single word or two.  Also, shoehorns are have another name; shoespooners.  They were originally made from bulls’ hoofs and some of those are still available for purchase.

The most common ones are made out of plastic, metal and wood.  But some were even made from glass and paper.  Expensive shoehorns have made their way into the market with Ralph Lauren, apparently, selling one for $2,500.  Ralph Lauren also has one made out of brass in Argentina for $45.

The quest went for a few hours….a shoe store. No, they did not have any.  Safeway?  No, sorry.  Food Lion?  Same answer but I did get to see Barbara and Gretchen who were shopping today at Food Lion.  Giant traitors.  Barbara’s husband is a chef so she proceeded to tell me that she never does the shopping, John does and cooks.  Wouldn’t that be nice.  What a dream!

Gretchen is a chef and she, like me shops, all the stores.  She said, well, “at least he did not ask you to get him a long handled shoe horn”.  Lucky me.  Even the Food Lion employee, who heard my name and my quest said…No, Gloria we don’t have any.

Then off to CVS, where the cashier told me that they did not have any either, but to stop by the Famous Footwear outlet.  We do have plenty of shoe outlets in Rehoboth Beach.

The Manager of Famous Footwear told me that they did not have any for sale, but graciously gave me 2 of their own!!  Thanks!  She did say that they get requests all the time, including the long handled shoe horns, as well.  These are very useful for people that have trouble bending, or with a disability.

In researching for this post….not much research, really, I found out that people are carrying their shoehorns to the airport.  As you know, we all have to take our shoes off, so having one at arms reach is a necessity for some.  And they are not considered dangerous…yet.

And, yes, a true gentleman’s wardrobe is not complete without a shoe horn.

I guess you learn something new every day.

Note:  My son called me on Mother’s Day and said “I have great present for you.  You will get to meet Ray Lewis.”  Oh no I said….there is a signing in June in Maryland.

Please, also note that Famous Footwear Outlet in Rehoboth Beach does have really cute shoes and sandals!!  They are located at 36470 Seaside Outlet Drive in Rehoboth Beach.

Talk to you later.
