The following information is from www.rehomain.com “In the 1920’s and 1930’s, vacationing families in Rehoboth purchased watermelons from roving produce salesmen called “hucksters”.  Most families did not have ice boxes and refrigerators were not yet common. When they bought a watermelon, people carved their initials in the melon and stored them in the ice house.”  That tradition is the celebration for the festival.
