HaHa’s Frozen Yogurt, The Village of Fenwick, Fenwick Island, Delaware… Self-Serve, Delicious, Healthy Frozen Yogurt, See Them Next Season, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn5772

Say it isn’t so…I just discovered Haha’s Frozen Yogurt, when my friend, Shelley, told me that today, Sunday was their last day until next April.  As is HaHa’s tradition, on their last day of the season, they offer free frozen yogurt. You may also want to give a contribution…all for the Delaware Food Bank.

Haha’s Frozen Yogurt is located at The Village of Fenwick at 300 Coastal Highway, Fenwick Island, Delaware, on the block of Coastal Highway and Rt. 54.  Tel. 302-581-0039.  Website?  http://www.hahasfrozenyogurt.com.

dscn5773

I started my evening with dessert followed by dinner.  I had no choice , this was their last night…poor me.   I had a hefty cup of frozen yogurt with Peanut Butter, Irish Mint, Classic Chocolate, Red Velvet Cake and Tropical Tart. The yogurt had well defined flavors.  Some were non fat, low fat, gluten free, or no sugar.  They also have a non-dairy sorbet.   I can honestly tell you that they ranked way on top of my favorites.  This is not a franchise.

dscn5769

You can serve yourself as much as you want, followed by plenty of toppings.  My choice is usually plain.  I choose to taste the true flavors one by one.

So, now you know…Opening next April!!  Have a good One!!

Destination? Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, The Second Season, Pumpkins, Gourds, Jams, Tomato Sunshine, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn5713

I can see why there is so much traffic when the height of the season is long gone!!  The Second Season at the Delaware Beaches brings gorgeous weather, restaurant specials, events, and no parking meters!!

dscn5717

dscn5716

Today is another one of those days, just like yesterday when I took off for the north side of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk.  It was about 8:30 a.m. and I was meeting Alice.  A few were already getting ready for a relaxing morning of fishing; others were walking the Boardwalk.  The Boardwalk is one mile long each way.  This is an award winning Boardwalk, originally built in 1873!!   It is the perfect place to renew in the a.m…..the salt air, the ocean breezes, and good company.  Locals touch each end of the Boardwalk to make sure they have accomplished their walk.

dscn5715

A weekly stop at Tomato Sunshine is a favorite, as well.  At this time of the year,…”produce great pumpkins, the pies will follow later.”  The seasons bring so many colorful changes to Tomato Sunshine.  It is located at 19791 Coastal Highway.  If you are leaving Rehoboth Beach, you will see it on your right.  If you are coming into Rehoboth, it will be on your left.  They are open, at this time of the year, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.  Tel. 302-226-2533.  Website?  http://www.tomatosunshine.com.

dscn5748

They have jams, fruit, vegetables, and fresh bread, besides all the pumpkins, as well.

dscn5744dscn5745

Tomato Sunshine is ready for Fall.  Check out what they have, don’t miss it.  It is a happy place!!  So, if you are looking for a specific type of pumpkin…go no further.  Ernie might even tell you how to cook some of them.

Rehoboth Beach Eats, Semra’s, Mediterranean Grill, Middle Eastern Veggies, Lamb, Chicken, Grains, Homemade Yogurt, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches…Lovers of Homemade & Robust Foods, Fresh Ingredients, Sophisticated Combinations

dscn5692

Semra grew up in Turkey, and John, her husband, is Turkish but grew up in the United States.  Together they have Semra’s Mediterranean Grill located at 19 Rehoboth Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, just steps off the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk.  Tel. 302-226-4976.  Website? http://www.semras.com.

John will be the first one to tell you that he is just a helper, that Semra does all the cooking.  Soft spoken and very happy to see that the restaurant that they started not too long ago is prospering and becoming a favorite or many locals and visitors alike.

A counter for take out is right by the door, then a more casual dining area for eating.  Their formal dining room is being remodeled and a bar is being added to the casual dining room, as well.

dscn5691

My friend, Chris, and I decided that an early dinner in Rehoboth Beach would be the thing to do on Sunday evening.  We chose Semra’s and glad we did.  This was not my first time at Semra’s.  This restaurant participates in the Eating Rehoboth food tours.  More info?  Check http://www.eatingrehoboth.com.

Semra showed us our booth and looking at the menu I could not make up my mind.

dscn5684

Chris had the Lamb Shish Kabob, which had one skewer of char-grilled marinated lamb cubes served over a salad.  Chris said the salad was great with a delicious dressing.

dscn5685

I had the Grilled Kofte which had patties of char-grilled lamb and beef with Turkish herbs and spices served over rice, yogurt, pita bread and veggies.

dscn5689

My patties were very moist.  Semra mentioned that the combination is mostly lamb with maybe 20% beef.

Semra’s family sends her red crushed pepper from Turkey.  You would think it would be so spicy but it wasn’t.  It actually added a mild kick to the food.  Very good.

dscn5690

The food was so fresh and settled perfectly.  We were comfortably satisfied.

Check their website or Facebook Page.  Entertainment at Semra’s includes belly dancing.  They will be putting those event as dates become available.

Have a good One!!

Discover Southern Delaware, Massey’s Landing, Fishing, Boating, Long Neck, Delaware Beaches, Sussex County

dscn4523

At times I like to get in my car and making sure I have a good cup of coffee on hand, I take off to check out the country side.

Did you know that Delaware is 42% farmland?  I know, you probably just come to the beaches, but for the ones that have chosen to live in Southern Delaware, the beaches, the parks, and the farms are home.

dscn4544

Open spaces, that’s what I love.  It feels like you can breath.  Taking in the scenery and driving towards Massey’s Landing, some of the abandoned barns could probably tell many stories.  They still stand strong but their time is over.

dscn4537

dscn4542

Massey’s Landing is located on the north shore of Long Neck, where Indian River and Rehoboth Bay meet.  It is pretty easy to get there.  Coming from the Delaware Beaches take Rt. 24 or John J. Williams Highway and drive to Rt. 23 (Long Neck).  Take that left and continue all the way in.  Just remember to take in the scenery.

Massey’s Landing is run by Delaware Division of Fish & Wildlife (DNREC).  The location is at the far eastern tip of Long Neck.

dscn4535

You will find public boat ramps, a fishing pier and basin.  It has good lighting and plenty of parking.

dscn4528

dscn4527

dscn4621

So, I asked a guy that was fishing on the rocks.  He is the one on my first photo.  What’s the name of the island across Massey’s?  Don’t know, he replied.  But, he continued, you should see the wild animals coming out of it.  The deer cross over Massey’s Ditch and come to the landing to feed.  Plenty of birds also on the island.

dscn4526

A man from a truck said is was Burton’s Island.  And, between Massey’s Landing and the island is Massey’s Ditch.  It runs fast and it has dramatic tidal shifts throughout the day.

So, if you are staying at the beaches, just remember than on a pretty day, is always nice to get out for a little discovering of Southern Delaware.  Perfect setting for photographers and bird watchers.

Nanticoke Indian Museum, Delaware’s Nanticoke Indian Tribe, National Historic Landmark, Annual Powwow, September 7-8, 2013, Discover Southern Delaware

dscn4522

In memory of NAU-GWA-OK-WA (Lydia E. Clark), who died in 1859.  She was the last of the Nanticoke Indians in Delaware and Eastern Maryland to speak the Nanticoke language.  The memorial was erected by The National Society of Colonial Dames in Delaware in 1927.  It was tucked away on a corner road in Oak Orchard; just by itself and it did attract my attention.

dscn4606

A visit to the Nanticoke Indian Museum a few days later was another “serendipity”…not looking for it but finding fortunate discoveries by accident.

dscn4602

The Nanticoke Indian Museum is located within the Nanticoke Indian community.  It is not far, at all, from the beaches.  It is on Rt. 24 on 27073 John J. Williams Highway, near Oak Orchard and Millsboro.   Tel. 302-945-3400.  Website?  http://www.nanticokeindians.org.

For years I have driven past this museum.  I looked at it and continued on.  This time, I stopped.

dscn4579

Mr. Sterling Street was in the Museum on that day.  I introduced myself and asked if I could take pictures.  He gave me permission, but not before he mentioned that I could take all the photos I wanted, but not from the eagles.  I was curious and asked him to pardon my ignorance.  He said that the Eagle is sacred to the Nanticoke Indian….it flyes the highest and therefore closest to God.

dscn4577dscn4578

Many years ago I knew Butch Coursey who was a Nanticoke.  I have not seen him in many years, but Mr. Street told me that he is still around and that Butch had attended school in the building which is now the Nanticoke Indian Museum.  He even brought photos out.  There are 2 rooms full of artifacts and information.  The library houses a large collection of Native American books, photos, and video presentations.  The public is welcome to use the library.

dscn4600

The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  Sunday, from Noon until 4 p.m.  It takes no time to get there.  And, it is only $3 for adults and $1 for children.

The Nanticoke Indian Museum is the only Native American Museum in Delaware.  It is also a National Historic Landmark.  Every artifact, carving, pottery, basketry, traditional clothing, and tool has been found in the community and offer glimpses of the complex traditional ways of the Nanticoke Tribe.

dscn4588dscn4587

dscn4584

dscn4586

The portrait of Chief Little Owl caught my attention.  If you have visited Bethany Beach, then you must have noticed the Totem Pole that welcomes all visitors to Bethany.  That carving is paying hommage to the Nanticoke Indians and, specifically, to Chief Little Owl.

dscn4599

The 2013 Annual Powwow is taking place from September 7th through September 8th.  A powwow is a gathering of Native people.  And, for the Nanticoke Indians is a time to teach us more about Delaware’s first inhabitants.

dscn4596

So, if the weather is too cool to sit on the beach, and if it is rainy and the shoppers are making you crazy…think about the museums that are scattered throughout Southern Delaware.  They are very doable…and let me tell you….kids would love the Nanticoke Indian Museum.

Have a great week-end.
