Susan is originally from Baltimore, Maryland, but she is making Rehoboth Beach her home.  The Happyrock Pottery is located at the Shops at Celebration Mall at 20 Baltimore Ave. in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 410-375-7120.

img_6690

Her specialty is Raku pottery which has small cracks that turn black.  These are made by the deposits of carbon in them, turning them black no matter what color of clay used.  The final product is so unique.

Watching Susan work was so relaxing.  As a professional she made it look so easy.

The Boardwalk, Rehoboth Beach, An Award-winning Boardwalk, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware, Temperatures in the upper 80s, Water Temperature is 74 degrees, A Sizzling kind of a Day!!, Vacationing in The Nation’s Summer Capital

dscn6359

Visitors to Rehoboth Beach come for many reasons; the town is charming, it has artistic appeal, a great nightlife and a pretty nice ambiance….the restaurants?  A destination.  When you come to Downtown Rehoboth Beach, you can play, dine, shop, and stay, all in one square mile.

dscn6348

Life revolves around the Boardwalk and the Bandstand during the summer months.

dscn4570

Early this morning I decided to check out the Boardwalk.  I parked on the south side of the Boardwalk, on Hickman Street.  Usually, you can find parking very easily on that street.  It was such an awesome day in Rehoboth; hot too.

The Boardwalk is a mile long.  Built, originally in 1873, on high ground.  Through the years, storms have changed its configuration.

dscn6358

Already the colorful umbrellas were lining the beach. My objective was reaching the Sandcastle Contest which took place all day.

Dining right on the Boardwalk is part of the fun.

dscn6337

All of a sudden I saw the lifeguards.  They were in their 10 a.m. meeting, just like they do every day.

dscn6294dscn6297

Kites were up; a pretty breezy kind of a day.

dscn6334dscn6335

When I arrived at the Sandcastle tent, they told me they had about 36 teams already.  Trophies would be awarded later in the day.

dscn6309dscn6310

It was so funny.  The teams were busy.  Water, shovels, kids, families….guess what?  All having a great time.

dscn6314dscn6323dscn6325

Right on the Boardwalk  you will find several arcades and rides.  One of the biggest and oldest is Funland.  It is an institution since 1962, and a must for all if you are visiting Rehoboth Beach.  Rides open at 1:00 p.m.  Games earlier than that.

dscn6363dscn6365dscn6367

dscn6364

Ryan’s Mini-Golf is over the Boardwalk, great view of the beach.

dscn6360

dscn6353dscn6355

Plenty of places to eat at the Boardwalk, but an iconic one is Gus & Gus since 1956.

dscn6349dscn6286

Note:  Off the Boardwalk to the beach, there are ramps that are wheelchair accessible.

dscn6298

Just strolling….that was the post…the forecast for Sunday?  Practically, the same!!

dscn6347Have a good one!!  Talk to you later….remember, relax; you are at the Beach!!

“The name “Rehoboth Beach” was chosen for the Camp Meeting Grounds.  The source for the name is the Bible (Gen. 26:22):  In early Hebrew, Rehoboth meant “broad places”. Modern Mixture, Restaurant, Rehoboth Beach, Review, Breakfast, Smoothies, Coffee Bar, Burritos, Mexican Tortas, Salads, Kids Menu, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, New Eatery in Town

“The demand for ethnic foods in the United States reflects the Nation’s changing diversity, as well as, its development over time.”   national restaurant association

And isn’t that the truth?  Ethnic foods are probably one of my favorites; the spices, aromas, from different countries put you in a certain mood….warm and cozy or that heat that kicks your taste buds up a notch.

I dragged one of my sons to Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  He was willing, knowing that food was the reward.  My sons are foodies.  They can eat stones; they have always been great eaters; adventurous is the way I would qualify them.  So off to join the many on the road already on Rt. 1.  Good thing we knew how to get around the traffic.

dscn6164dscn6165

We were heading to Modern Mixture.  No idea where it was; just that it was located at 62A Rehoboth Avenue.  Midway through the ocean block.  We did not miss it.  Bright colors pulling you in.  If you are facing the ocean, it will be on the right hand side.  Great to see the water bowls for the four legged friends too.  The telephone is 302-227-0600  Website? http://www.modern-mixture.com.  You can find them of Facebook and Twitter.

The restaurant is long, with tables and benches on either side. It is a super casual eatery.  No alcohol is served.

dscn6163

At the end of the hall you will find Leo and his staff.  Leo is the owner of Modern Mixture, which only opened in Downtown Rehoboth Beach 2 months ago.  He told me that it has been a process, but a good one.  Now he would like people to know where he is; to know that he makes, practically, everything in-house, and that his food is tasty and delicious; reasonably priced too.

I spoke to Leo in Spanish.  I love it when I can give this courtesy to someone that speaks my native language.  Leo was great and so friendly.

dscn6160

On his menu you will find Mexican Tortas, which are hot sandwiches; Torta Cubana, Torta de Milanesa, Torta Libanesa and a Torta del Chato.  The Burritos will be: a Simple Burrito with your choice of meats, Vegetarian, Burrito Mixto, Burrito Moderno, and a Burrito Chido with pulled adobado pork, refried beans, guacamole and pico de gallo.  Falafel, sope which is a homemade tortilla, lightly fried, topped with refried beans, homemade chorizo, lettuce, radishes, onions, sour cream and queso fresco.  Salsa of your choice on top.  The always present guacamole and even a kids menu.  A little bit of “mixture” for everyone.

dscn6155dscn6156

A salsa bar to serve your own sauces, all homemade.

dscn6158dscn6177

My son wanted a breakfast burrito.  So he decided to customize it with egg whites, avocado, bacon, and refried beans.  It came with fresh fruit.  An Americano coffee for his drink.

dscn6174

It was a beautiful burrito and it was sooooo good.  Let’s put it this way, he said “I will definitely come back here”.

dscn6176

I wanted a smoothie.  Leo asked me if I wanted a healthy one.  Of course!!  My smoothie was made with a whole avocado, mango, pineapple, and spring mix salad.  Only ice was added.  It was so refreshing and I was so surprised that no other liquids were included.

dscn6170

Leo suggested I give his fish tacos a try.  Either fish or shrimp.  I ordered one of each.  They were beer battered and the fish used was wahoo.  They were served with a bean, tomato and corn salsa.  Chips also.  Lately, I have been checking out the fish tacos and Leo presented them in a flour tortilla, and a tasty sauce.  The fish and the shrimp were crunchy on the outside and very moist inside.  Just very good, indeed.

dscn6172

I, had to ask, I just had to….Do you have corn tortillas?  A lot of people do prefer them to the flour ones, but my question was because I wanted to find out if someone with a gluten allergy could eat at Modern Mixture.  At present, he only has flour tortillas.  The reason being that the corn tortillas he has tried, have not been to his satisfaction.  Looking for a supplier.

Regarding eating gluten free.  He makes soups and tamales that are gluten free.  All you have to do is call him ahead of time and find out what’s on the menu and ask.

By the way, Monday, 7/30 he will have tamales…just in case you are interested.

Leo was not going to let us go without trying his fried ice cream.  My downfall is ice cream and I do love it fried.  His were perfect for sharing; it was a large order.  So good; the dough around it was still so warm.  Oh well, hitting the gym is an understatement.

dscn6178

Word of mouth is an amazing advertising tool….stop by and let me know how you like it.

Have a great week!!  Talk to you later.

Tomato Sunshine, Garden Center, Market, Fresh Produce, Local Veggies, Rehoboth Beach, Southern Delaware

dscn4948

Tomato Sunshine changes with the season.  I love stopping by.  It is very close to my home.  To tell you the truth, at times I just pull in and walk around.  The flowers are gorgeous, the produce is amazing.  It all puts a smile on my face.

dscn4956

Tomato Sunshine is located at 19791 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Tel. 302-226-9533.  Website?  http://www.tomatosunshine.com.  If you are vacationing, please stop in.  Ernie and Donna are the owners and either one or the other is always there.  Any questions you might have, just ask because everyone is so helpful.  I always have an interest in different looking fruits and Ernie is quick to give me a description.

dscn4950dscn6001

But, today I was looking for peaches.  It is that time of the year.  Tomato Sunshine has local peaches.  Because of the hot weather they are ready.  If you are baking or just enjoying them as a fruit, stop by.  They are so sweet.l

dscn6002

I notice they had local fresh bread, as well. The bread came from Touch of Italy located at The Villages of Five Points in Lewes.

dscn5994

The corn, and the melons were just gorgeous.

dscn5999

The Honeydews were screaming…take me, take me…it is too hot!!

dscn6004

Then, my eyes focused on the mountain of tomatoes. The color was unreal.

dscn5998

There it was.  The mother of all tomatoes.  I picked it up and took it to the scale.  I wanted to see its weight.  Wow….1.74 lbs!!  My gosh!.  They told me the other day they had a 2 pounder.

dscn5997

It is the height of the season for a lot of the local produce.  If you are visiting the Delaware Beaches, please just take time to enjoy what Southern Delaware has to offer.  We have lots of farmers’ markets; local markets that open every day.   You know what?  You won’t regret it.  The taste is just incredible.

Talk to you later.  Have a good one!!

Cake Break, Gourmet Cupcake Company, Rehoboth Beach, Bakery, Breakfast, Opens 6:30 a.m. Daily, Coffee, Espresso, Smoothies, Vegan & Gluten Free Options, Nut Free Facility, Delaware Beaches

I had received a tip that I needed to look for Miss Piggy at Cake Break.  Say no more, that’s were I went on one of those hot summer days in Rehoboth Beach.  There is something about cupcakes.  They evoke childhood memories.  One serving and you don’t really need to share with anyone.  It is all yours to enjoy.

Cake Break is located at 7 South First Street, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-260-9264.  Website? www.cakebreakrehoboth.com.  You can find them on Facebook as CakeBreakRehoboth and on Twitter as CakeBreakRB.

I am so glad to see Cake Break so successful.  Debbie, her husband, and her staff, including her 2 professional bakers, are working so hard and it is, definitely, paying off.  I have written in the past several posts.  If you want to see them, just put the name on the Search on this website.

It was in the afternoon when I arrived at Cake Break.  I saw Miss Piggy.  Renee, who is a friend, and always on the lookout for interesting foods, told me about it.  So here it is.  Meet Miss Piggy.  This simple looking cupcake is packed with flavor.  Those contrasting flavors of salt and sweetness make this one awesome cupcake!!

dscn5765

I sat down to eat it as Debbie’s husband explained what it consisted of.  It is a brown sugar yellow cake with a swirl of brown sugar inside.  A drizzle of caramel with butter cream and bacon.  A total winner!!

That’s all I was going there for and as I was getting ready to leave the Canoli cupcakes made themselves present.  Devil’s food or yellow?  Decisions, decisions.

dscn5766

Please note that even though Cake Break is a gourmet cupcake company they do offer all kinds of homemade baked goods.  They open very early and stay open late, as well.  Their coffee is delicious.  I have tried it; bold and hot.

You can call their number 302-260-9264 and pickup is available curbside.

They are busy with weddings.  They offer wedding cupcakes, birthday cakes and special orders.  Just call them or stop by to meet with Debbie.

Cake Break is a nut free facility.  Vegan and Gluten Free options are available.  Both are the best.

Stop by and say hello…they are a friendly bunch!!
