“Ask not what you can do for your country.  Ask what’s for lunch.”  orson wells

Arriving at the beach with much anticipation.  So many places to dine.  Casual atmosphere at the Delaware Beaches so don’t despair you will find just the perfect place.  Whether you want lunch or dinner the restaurants are all ready to serve you….Summer 2015 is officially starting this Memorial Week-End and the gates have opened and if you have already been out and about, you know exactly what I mean.

Striper Bites is located at 107 Savannah Rd. in Downtown Historic Lewes, Delaware.  Tel. 302-645-4657.  Website?  http://www.striperbites.com.

Happy Hour at the Bar is a must at Striper Bites.  Mingle with the locals or make a friend or two in Lewes.  The service is great and the prices are affordable.

Plenty of seating choices.  Near the bar, or, if you want to have more of a private setting there are booths and cozy benches and tables.

The dining room is quiet and perfect for catching up with friends.

It is so funny because now that summer is here, we are all trying to eat as healthy as possible…..we do want to sit at the beach, if you get my drift.

The Striper Bite House Salad is one of my favorites.  Make it a meal by adding chicken, tuna, rockfish, scallops, shrimp, salmon, lobster salad, or a crab cake.  It is a mix of greens with artichoke hearts, roma tomatoes, olives, cukes, and red onions tossed in a delish vinaigrette and topped with toasted pine nuts and crumbled blue cheese.

Love it with Grilled Salmon…

Or if you love lobster…then, please order it!!

dscn4639

Striper Bites offers a traditional Lobster Roll…plenty of lobster tossed in light Dijon mayo and stuffed in a lobster roll.

dscn4473

The Striper Bite Club is their Signature Sandwich.  Blackened Mahi Mahi served on a ciabatta roll with lettuce, tomato, and smoked applewood bacon with a Caesar Dressing.  On the side?  Depending what the side of the day….I had cole slaw which was very good, as well.

Have a great week-end!!  Sunny weather, blue skies, low humidity…..perfect.

“Lewes has always been essentially a seafaring town.  Blessed with an excellent harbor, Lewes is home to a large fleet of charter fishing boats stationed on the canal along Anglers Rd.  It is also the base of the Delaware Bay and River Pilots Association, whose members guide cargo vessels to and from the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia.  The University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean & Environment makes Lewes its home.”      lewes chamber of commerce

At times I ask friends what they have been up to and usually the answer is Out & About.  So, that’s what I just did Tuesday when I went to Lewes to visit 3 friends.  What would I do without them?  Don’t know.  I find myself so lucky to have so many really good friends.  The other day I reposted on Facebook something to the effect that “it did not matter how serious life gets, you want to count on those friends you can be stupid with”.  These ladies are definitely on that level of friendship.

Lewes had taken the Christmas decorations down.  New year and new expectations for all the coastal towns.  The merchants were happy with the holidays; plenty of shoppers, fantastic weather, beautiful scenery.  Second Street is the Main Street in Lewes; a quiet day in Lewes it was.

Our choice for lunch was Striper Bites.  Lewes offers its visitors and residents many good restaurants within walking distance.  Striper Bites is located at 107 Savannah Rd., almost where Savannah Rd. meets Second St.  Tel. 302-645-4657.  Website?  www.striperbites.com.  It is a most loved neighborhood restaurant with 2 other sister restaurants in Lewes; Kindle and Half Full.

Striper Bites opens year-round, full bar, plenty of seating; in the summer outdoor dining is available all the way into fall.  Please note that they will be taking a well deserved rest; closing on Sunday, 1/15 until Thursday, 2/9.

Our server had to come a few times to our table.  You know how it is, we were trying to out talk each other; catching up.

We had a laid back lunch.  Since we are trying to watch our figure after the holidays then soup and salad is what we ordered.  To tell you the truth I should probably be eating a piece of lettuce and call it a day.  Anyway, this is what we had.

Jody and I decided on the Striper Bites House Salad.  This salad was a mixture of fresh greens with archichoke hearts, roma tomatoes, kalamata olives, cukes, red onion rings tossed in Italian vinaigrette and topped with toasted pinenuts and crumbled bleu cheese.  Jody and I decided to substitute the bleu cheese for feta cheese.

dscn1492

I thought the salad was very good.  After some of the food I had been eating lately, it was refreshing and light.  Toasted pinenuts added that extra crunch.

Our friend, Debbie D, had the same salad with the bleu cheese but she went the extra mile of topping it with grilled Rockfish.  She thought it was delicious.  We live on the coast and seafood is the specialty of many of our restaurants.

One friend that does not need to watch her weight is the other Debbie that was with us.  Nevertheless, a hearty beef vegetable barley soup hit the spot.  Nothing better than soup on a chilly day.  She thought it was well seasoned and the barley and vegetables were enough for a light lunch.

I looked around and the restaurant was crowded.  Good to see the people Out & About.

A few cups of coffee and tea completed what I always find a priceless time with friends.

Please note that Striper Bites opens Mondays through Saturdays from 11:30 until closing.  Check the website for specials and events; they have plenty.  It is closed on Sundays and….No reservations.

Striper Bites, Lewes, Delaware, Restaurant, Review, Delaware Beaches

This past Wednesday, it was somewhat quiet at the Delaware beaches.  And after writing about North Florida this week it was time to hit Delaware once again.

If you have been reading my blog, you already know that I live in Rehoboth Beach, but before that I lived in Bethany Beach.  My children went to school in Berlin, Maryland, for their formative years.  Needless to say, I have made so many good friends; some of them are closer than others.  And, some I call my partners in crime.

Debbie is one of them.  So on Wednesday we decided to meet Cindi in Lewes.  Cindi has the potential to become a partner in crime.  She has been very busy so it might take time.

When I think about the meaning of friendship I have to say that true friendships are difficult to find.  Sometimes it takes years to actually feel a good friendship; it is a balance of give and take; the building of mutual trust.

These two women are examples of a true friendship.  And, when we meet for dinner it takes us a while to even order because we are chatting up a storm.  Such was the case the other night when we chose Striper Bites to eat.

Striper Bites is located at 107 Savannah Rd. in Lewes.  Tel. 302-645-4657.  Website is www.striperbites.com.

Whether you are a visitor at the Delaware beaches or a resident you must know that Striper Bites is a very popular restaurant and has been so for many years.  It has 2 sister restaurants in Lewes; Kindle and Half Full, both popular, as well.

I have not been at Striper Bites in a long time and was certainly looking forward to the evening.  In the summer it is very crowded and reservations are not accepted so the fall and winter are the perfect times to experience it.

We ate indoors but in warmer weather you have the availability to eat al fresco.

The atmosphere was welcoming.  This restaurant is a neighborhood restaurant.  Casual and comfortable.

It has an extensive menu but between all the catching up, the moment our waitress said that the special on Wednesdays was sirloin and strip steaks for half the price, Debbie and I went for it.

I cannot believe that I did not look at anything else.  Apparently, their salads are excellent and you can make a meal out of them.

My 12 ounce strip steak was brie and horseradish herb encrusted.  I chose to have it cooked medium, hold the potatoes, double order of green beans.  It was very good and thoroughly enjoyed it because I had been eating so much fish lately.

Debbie chose hers plain and grilled, no potatoes and more beans, as well.  She thought hers was delicious and hit the spot.

IMG_0021

Cindi decided on the rockfish, which was sauteed with tomatoes, roasted garlic, mushrooms, red onions, lemon juice and sherry.  It was served with sauteed spinach and pan roasted potatoes.

Even though Debbie and I were happy with our choices, Cindi’s dish had a wonderful aroma and looked amazing.

Wednesdays from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Fish and Chips are $9.  That night has also the sirloin and strip steaks half price, as well.
