A time capsule in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware? In 1991, Rehoboth Beach celebrated its Charter Centennial. A 6 foot by 6 foot time capsule was buried on the corner where the Chamber of Commerce is located, across from the Lighthouse traffic circle. The plaque on the above photo identifies its location. The capsule contains records from 1991, magazines, telephone books, and museum history records. It also has original photos, artifacts, postcards and souveniers from 1876 to 1891, plus the original die casts for the centennial coin. At the time, the youngest attendee was Tricia Conlon who was then 2 months old. Her photo and family history were included as she could possibly be alive at age 99 when the capsule is opened on March 19, 2090, one year before the bicentennial celebration in 2091.
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware is also knows as The Nation’s Summer Capital. In just a few months the Delaware Beaches will start waking up after a hard winter. Our winters our usually mild and balmy….we will see what that Groundhog will hae to say on Sunday.
It was quiet in town. Love Rehoboth Beach this time of the year!!
On trendy Baltimore Avenue.
Rehoboth Avenue is Main street in Rehoboth Beach. At the end of the avenue, the Bandstand, the Boardwalk, and the Atlantic Ocean.
An award-winning Boardwalk….it is the life of the town in the summer.
In the summer we play in the sand….in the winter, and after the storm, snow!! The best of both worlds.
On the north side of the Boardwalk….I love this view.
One of my favorite places in Rehoboth Beach is Silver Lake. This is a freshwater lake. It is closer to an ocean than any other freshwater lake in the U.S. It was once called Newbold’s Freshwater Lake. It is a waterfowl preserve and migrating birds like geese and ducks stop to recharge on their north-south flyway. The gazebos lining the lake have become symbolic welcomming signs to visitors of Rehoboth Beach.
Stay warm…..spring is coming!!

Visions of Sugar Plums dancing in…..what? Say that again? My visions were a little different. That’s why on Christmas Day, my sister in law, Susie, and I took off for Downtown Rehoboth Beach to walk it all off….The Holidays!!
They say that the average American gains about 8 pounds from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. We were on our way…reaching that goal…yikes!
Walking around Rehoboth Beach is easy, especially on Christmas Day!! You have the town to yourselves. So, off we went to walk off the following:
Christmas Eve dinner consisted of my stuffed pork loin, among other dishes. My last figs were used in the stuffing. Truly delicious and nobody was counting calories.
Christmas morning is always soooo good. You wake up to the aroma of sausage cooking on the stove. This year we even added some of the leftover sweet potatoes.
A new addition was the Turkey Scrapple by Rapa. This scrapple has half the fat of the regular scrapple. Cooked well done…thin and crispy is the best.
The plate was full…a little fruit to make you feel healthier….but please don’t forget the molasses. A must drizzled over the buckwheat cakes!!
Cookies…a present from my neighbor….well, they never hit the gorgeous platter that accompanied them.
Which brings me to the subject of walking around Rehoboth Beach. It was cool but much welcomed weather!! It is that time of the year. Taking a walk on this beautiful coastal town is always invigorating.
The scenic Silver Lake…This lake is one of the 3 crown jewels of Rehoboth Beach. Along with Lake Gerar and Lake Comegys, Silver Lake is one of the fresh water lakes closest to the ocean anywhere in the country.
Going out and About in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware….have a good one!!

Looking out the window, all I can see is blue sky and sunshine. I took a drive early this morning to Rehoboth Beach. It was chilly, but you know what? It was beautiful, as well. I encountered a young woman walking her dog. She had her pajamas on, still. They were very stylish; but pajamas, they were. She told me so. She could not believe how pretty it was. Warmer here vs. Maryland. Yes, our Delaware Beaches give us warmer temperatures in the winter and cooler ones in the summer.
The Rehoboth Boardwalk is pretty long and looking north, it was empty. The beach, well, that’s a scenery I never get tired of.
Then I looked south and just as empty. Oh well, it might be quiet now, but not for long. Come that Memorial week-end, the gates will open and these coastal towns in the Delaware Beaches will be showing its visitors why there are so many people choosing to move to the area; not just the ones retiring, either.
I came to Silver Lake. It is one of my favorite spots. If you are coming into Rehoboth from the south side of Coastal Highway, it will be right there to your right.
Silver Lake is part of the Delaware Birding Trail. A variety of gulls and many waterbirds are found; a refuge for all of them.
And then I saw him; the beautiful Blue Heron. He was just looking out into the water.
There are 3 lakes; 2 in Rehoboth Beach; Lake Gerar and Silver Lake are partly fresh water and partly salt water lakes. Lake Comegys is in Dewey Beach. These 3 fresh water lakes are the closest to the ocean anywhere in the country.
Rehoboth Beach; lucky to live here….talk to you later…..

Silver Lake, Rehoboth Beach
Silver Lake is a small pond that is nestled amongst the cottages on one side and the beach estates on the other in Rehoboth Beach. It offers a thrilling close look at a variety of wintering duck species. It is a bird refuge. You will find a lot of Canvasbacks, but it is also a reliable place in the state to find Redheads. Ruddy Ducks and Mallards are in abundance along with different types of gulls and other waterbirds.
If you are visiting downtown Rehoboth, you will probably come through Silver Lake. In the morning visitors, locals and natives alike are walking their dogs, jogging, power walking and just enjoying another day at the beach.
I was driving around Rehoboth yesterday and took the following pictures not realizing that a post was in the works. The waterfowl is at peace waiting for the winter storm which should be arriving today.
Relaxing on someone's deck
Should we plunge? We are not Polar Bears.
Forget it, let's waddle.
Better yet, let's fly in!!
Note: Information on Silver Lake was taken from www.delawarebirdingtrail.org.
Just a few specks of snow falling, but nothing noticeable yet. Have a great Saturday and talk to you later….
