Good Morning Delmarva, Juicing, Popovers, Gluten Free, It’s Sunday!!

dscn0909

I am trying to stay ahead of the flu.  Believe me, I have been overexposed.  Some have it in my household…I got the flu shot, vitamins, and tons of liquids since I decided to start juicing.  Getting those nutrients directly from fruits and vegetables.  I hope it works.

I shopped for the juicer at some of our stores in Rehoboth Beach.  I decided on Jack LaLanne’s Power Juicer.  First of all it is a proven juicer.  Secondly, the price was $99.  There were some that were $49 but I did not know how they would hold.  And, then, there were the ones that were $200 and up.  I am a novice at this. The third attraction to this juicer was easy clean-up.

dscn0926

Juicing is expensive, no two ways about it.  I usually buy fresh but when you are juicing you need to buy in larger quantities.  I have beets, turnips, celery, oranges, melons, greens…I got avocados and bananas.  Please note that the juicer is strictly a juicer.  No smoothies; avocados and bananas do not have liquid, therefore blend those in a blender or food processor and then add to the already made juice.

I love Gala apples so this was one of my first juices.

dscn0912

Freshly squeeze orange juice is always a treat.  Juiced with the rind so as to absorb all vitamins.

dscn0923

Look at the color of the celery juice.  Celery is full of vitamins and low in fat.  It is also a natural diuretic.  Something new I learned is that some people are allergic to celery.  In Europe they disclose if products contain celery.

dscn0929

I decided to make popovers.  I have not been too successful at them.  It could be the gluten free flour used.  I am getting better.  I want them to be light but they still come out more muffin-like.  They were delicious, don’t get me wrong. I used the pulp collected in the pulp collector to give my popovers added flavor.

Before I post the recipe, let me tell you that I used an interesting gluten free flour.  Mama’s Almond Blend.  It has white rice flour, tapioca flour, potato starch, sweet rice flour and almond meal flour.  It is a light flour; non gritty.  To learn more visit http://www.glutenfreemama.com.

dscn0917

I also used a 100% Coconut sugar.  It is, apparently, the “in” sugar to use.  I, actually, won it at Good Earth Market & Organic Farm, located in Clarksville, Delaware.  http://www.goodearthmarket.com.  It is organically grown and more nutritious.  It smells like coconut, but it does not taste like it.  The taste is more like raw sugar with a hint of caramel.  Diabetics, please listen, because coconut sugar ha a low glycemic index, it is better for you.

dscn0914

Orange Popovers

3 eggs (room temperature)

1 tablespoon sugar

1 1/4 milk

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 1/4 cups gluten free flour (if not Celiac or without gluten sensitivity, use regular flour)

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons of orange zest or pulp

Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees.

In a large bowl whisk the eggs with sugar and zest.

Whisk in milk and 3 tablespoons of melted butter.

In another bowl whisk the flour with the baking powder and salt.

Whisk the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until small lumps only remain.

Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter and brush the inside of the popover or deep muffin pan.

Place the empty pan in the oven for about 10 minutes.  Don’t worry if the butter starts browning.

Take it out and then, carefully, fill them half way.  You can sprinkle some of the rind or pulp on top just before putting them in the oven.

dscn0918

Bake for about 40 minutes.

dscn0919

Nice and hot, ready to eat.

dscn0922

Great with honey.  I added to my raw honey some freshly squeeze orange juice and rind.  The Country Harvest raw honey came from Manchester, Maryland.  Dip or spread.

Enjoy!!

Touring & Tasting, Dogfish Head, The Brewery, Milton, Delaware..Gluten Free Dogfish Head Beer? Tweason ‘ale!!

dscn0255

Last Wednesday was the perfect day for my first tour and tasting at Dogfish Head, located in Milton, Delaware.  I have, previously, reviewed their restaurant located in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  On this particular day, we were ready to learn a thing or two about this company.  I say we because my cousin was visiting.  Arturo is a beer connoisseur and have been wanting to check Dogfish out.

dscn0251

I had reserved 2 spots for the tour.  You can do that on their website, http://www.dogfish.com.  They only take up to 12 people at a time.  That’s why at this time of the year, in the middle of the week, was just the day to do this.  In the summer, you have to plan a little bit more.

dscn0256

Dogfish Head is located at 6 Cannery Village Center, Milton, DE 19968.  Tels. 302-684-1000, 1-888-8Dogfish.  There is a lot of construction going on at this time of the year.  The expansion is taking place.  The company started in 1995.

The first thing that caught my eye was a sculpture.  It seemed that it did not belong there.  The Dogfish slogan “Off-centered ales for off-centered people”.  I thought, oh well.  It was not until later that I found out what the sculpture was.

dscn0250

It is called the Steampunk Tree House.  It first appeared at the Burning Man event in Black Rock City, Nevada in 2007.  The artist was Sean Orlando from Oakland, CA.  Find out how it got to Milton, Delaware by visiting http://www.dogfish.com/company/tangents/steampunk-treehouse.htm.

John was our tour guide.  You can see him there on the right behind the counter.  I cannot say enough about him.  He was so knowledgeable.  Explained everything with ease and in a casual and relaxed way.  At the end of the tour, when he asked us if there were any other questions.  There were non, really….he was that thorough.  You can request to have him as your tour guide.

dscn0254

Brewing that day were the 60 Minute IPA and Indian Brown Ale.  The Indian Brown Ale was going to be our second tasting.  We were given 4 sharks.  One for each tasting.  They were our tokens.

dscn0258

By Delaware law only 4 samples of beer each day.  Those 4 samples will equal 1 beer.  You are not to share your beer.  If you don’t want to finish it, just throw it away.

Dogfish Head also has been making, since 1995, a Birch Beer Soda.  It is made with brown sugar and vanilla beans.

dscn0259

The first beer we tried was a Birra Etrusca, Ancient Ale. This was a new release.  It had specialty ingredients like hazelnut flour, pomegranates, Italian chestnut honey, Delaware wildflower honey and clover honey.  They said it is comparable to a Malbec.

On this corner John showed us how Dogfish Head started.  It was so funny because I thought the name Dogfish Head came from Sam Calagione just making it up.  But Dogfish Head is located in Maine.  That is where he came from.  Made sense.

dscn0265

dscn0262

As you can see, our group was ready for our second tasting. We were about to taste the Indian Brown Ale.  This is a cross between a Scotch ale, an IPA and an American Brown.  A definite malty taste.

dscn0260

dscn0261

Dogfish Head beer has the highest amount of alcohol than any other beer in the U.S.  You can also find them in 24 states.

We all grabbed protective eye gear and off we entered the brewery.  Stainless steel, pipes, workers busy packaging, inspecting, etc. etc.

dscn0271

dscn0274

dscn0275

dscn0283

dscn0278

dscn0279

We passed an area called “Sam’s Stash”.  A sample of all beers that have been developed.

dscn0276

Back to where we started to our 3rd tasting; Olde School Barley Wine.  An ale.  Flavors of figs and dates that help ferment it.  Very nice with an alcohol content of 15%.

Our last tasting was very interesting; like a stout.  It was the Palo Santo Marron.  It is a brown ale.  It ages in a 10,000 gallon, handmade wooden tank, picking up caramel and vanilla complexities.

dscn0293dscn0287

Their gluten free beer is called Tweason ‘ale.  They describe it as “gluten free with gusto”.  It is sorghum based, brewed with strawberries and buckwheat honey.

dscn0295

There is nothing like the branding of a name.  T-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, beach chairs, souvenirs….you name it.  I even saw soap made with beer at the Rehoboth Beach location.

dscn0264

dscn0296

This tour is so worth it.  31 miles from Rehoboth Beach.  Of course, we bought beer!!

dscn0291

Have a good one!!  Merry Merry!!

dscn7445

Do you remember when it used to be called The Wellness Community Delaware?  Well, that name has been changed and it is now called Cancer Support Community Delaware.   The Mission?  That has stayed the same; to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.  Cancer Support Community Delaware is the only organization in Delaware dedicated exclusively to helping people cope with and manage the emotional aspect of cancer.  They also focus on the cancer participants’ family and/or caregivers, including children and teenagers.

Cancer Support Community Delaware’ s programs are professionally led and provide emotional support, education and hope.  All programs are free of charge.  Funds raised in Sussex County stay here, in Sussex County, to help our neighbors.

There is a Countdown to the 2nd Annual Wings of Hope – A Butterfly Release, to benefit the Cancer Support Community Delaware.  It is going to be on Saturday, 9/15.  Rain date is Sunday, 9/16.  The event will be held at the Medical Arts Building, 18947 John J. Williams Highway (Rt. 24) in Rehoboth Beach, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Admission is free and everyone is invited and welcomed.  The event will include activities, entertainment, vendors, and refreshments.

Seeded butterfly cutouts ($10) will be available for purchase as well as the opportunity to release your own live butterfly ($25 – only 50 available, advance purchase suggested).  The event culminates in a butterfly garden created by Sposato Landscape with the release of 250 live Monarch butterflies.  For more info., please visit http://www.cancersupportdelaware.org/wingsofhope.

The 2nd Annual Wings of Hope is sponsored by WBOC-TV, Delmarva Broadcasting – Cool 101.3 and Eagle 97.7, Cape Gazette, Tunnell Cancer Center, Jack Lingo Realtor and Grotto Pizza.

Paula Sangaleer from Eagle in the Morning and Norman Short from In Touch with Delmarva, both on Eagle 97.7, and Angelica Spanos from WBOC-TV will be joining this community-wide celebration of life.

I don’t think there is anyone that has not been touched by cancer.  Having friends going through treatments at this moment, makes this kind of fundraising event more personal.

Talk to you later.

Chicks For Charity Southern Delaware, Raising Funds for Worthy Causes, Celebrating 2 years Assisting Those Less Fortunate, Delaware Beaches, Sussex County, The Evening’s Beneficiary was The Global Delaware Fund

It was my first Chick for Charity event.  My friend, Jody, invited me to attend a fundraising evening.  Amazingly so, I did know a few people.  It took place at Fish On, which is located at The Villages of Five Points in Lewes, Delaware.

Chick for Charity has a monthly dinner at Fish On.  This evening’s beneficiary would be The Global Delaware Fund.  Dinner, cash bar, silent auction and 50/50.  Plus, you get to meet new faces.

dscn6054

Chick for Charity is a group which mission is now well established 2 years after Kari Ainsworth and Marci Urgo decided to start this non-profit organization.  Since that first dinner in 2010 they have “aided the residents of Sussex County.  The organizations they have helped are essential community resource agencies that aid kids, families, the elderly, abandoned animals, and those that are undeserved and in need”.  Their tel. is 302-362-2033.  Website? http://www.chicksforcharity.us E-mail gals4thegood@aol.com.

The Beneficiary?  The Global Delaware Fund, 36 The Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947. Tel. 302-856-4393.  Email:  hleahy@delcf.org  Website?  http://www.theglobaldelawarefund.com

Matthew Haley (Matt) and SoDel Concepts founded The Global Delaware Fund.  Helping so many here and abroad.  Lots of plans for the future, Nicaragua, Ghana…there are big needs in our small world.

dscn6043

I have been to just a few of The Global Delaware Fund fundraising events.  This intimate group got to hear Matt say that his direction in life; the passion for helping others came from someone giving him a chance, as well.

The Global Delaware Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing goods and services to children at risk in distressed situations; adults, locally and throughout the world.

The beneficiaries are:  La Esperanza, Crossroads Drug Treatment Center, Rehoboth Summer Children’s Theatre, Delaware’s Foster children, Youth Development: Domestic Skills Classes, Children and Families First of Delaware, Boys and Girls Club Delaware, Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, Pranjal Academy (Nepal), Victory House Boy’s.

Mingling, chatting, making new friends….that’s how it all started.  The silent auction with plenty of certificates.  Tickets needed to be bought, placing however many you wanted in each bag.  Again, I did not win a thing.  Not even the 50/50.  Oh well.  Next time.  On August 21st, the dinner will benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

dscn6033

A cash bar, salad and a buffet that followed.  A summer dinner indeed. I filled my plate with potato salad, succotash, grilled salmon and barbecued ribs.

dscn6046

Watermelon and strawberries, another favorite, for dessert.  Coffee, as well.

dscn6050

And then, it was time to go home.

Thanks for such a nice evening Chicks for Charity!!  I’ll be back!!

Flag Day, Indian River Life-Saving Station, Delaware Division of Parks & Recreation, Museum, Historic, Delaware Beaches

100_4281

Miles of beaches, up and down the Delaware Coast.  The surfmen were the keepers of our shores.  They patrolled the desolate and dangerous beaches looking for shipwrecks and warning other vessels of the imminent dangers along our coastline.  The years? 1876 – 1915.

If you are visiting the Delaware Beaches, a stop to the Indian River Life-Saving Station, should be put on the list of things to do.  It is located south of Dewey Beach and about a mile north of the Indian River Inlet, by the bridge.  On August 29, 2010, I wrote a post on this museum with pictures.  You can check it out on the archives of this website.  You can also check www.destateparks.com.

100_4245

The Life-Saving Station was built in 1876.  It is the only station in Delaware that is still standing in its original location.

100_4252

The U.S. Flag flew over the Station.  This particular flag, has 38 stars and was the official Flag of the U.S. from 1877 until 1890.

100_4265

It is believed that Flag Day originated in 1885.  More info? Please visit http://www.usflag.org/flag.day.html.

Have a great day!!

Happy Mother’s Day!!

dscn4118

I was leaving downtown Rehoboth Beach yesterday when passing through Silver Lake I noticed them, enjoying one gorgeous day.

Silver Lake is part of the Delaware Birding Trail.  A variety of gulls and many waterbirds are found.  It is a refuge for all of them.

dscn4121

At the Delaware Beaches, there are 3 lakes; 2 in Rehoboth Beach.  Lake Gerar and Silver Lake are partly fresh water and partly salt water lakes.  Lake Comegys is in Dewey Beach.

These 3 fresh water lakes are the closest to the ocean anywhere in the country.

Seeing this family….was just “picture” perfect.  Happy Mother’s Day!!

Lunch With A Purpose Coastal Delaware, A Women’s Organization, A Monthly Gathering, Lunch, Raising Funds to Benefit a Sussex County Charity and The Food Bank of Delaware

When my friend Jody called me the other day to remind me that the Lunch with a Purpose luncheon was going to be on Friday, May 4th, I said “Of course”, “I’ll be ready”.  Come to think of it, I really did not know what Lunch with a Purpose was about.  I knew it had to do with charities, but that was about it.

Well, surprise surprise.  I have told you before that I have lived here for so many years.  You would think that at this gathering of women I would have known another person besides Jody.  Not one person I knew or, actually, recognized.  Where have I been living?  Unreal.

Lunch with a Purpose started in 2006.  It’s Mission?  “To support charitable organizations in Sussex County, and the Food Bank of Delaware.”  Sussex County is where the Delaware Beaches are and it is the largest county in Delaware.

From September to May, on the first Friday of each month, Lunch with a Purpose has a new location and a new charity.  Yes, If you do have a charity, here in Sussex County, you can contact them so they can put you on their schedule of luncheons.

And this organization is comprised of women only.  You can find Lunch with a Purpose Coastal Delaware on Facebook, as well.

Lunch with a Purpose is the largest contributor in Sussex County to the Delaware Food Bank.  5,400 pounds of food were donated during the 2010 – 2011 collection season.

What started with a handful of women in 2006 is now an organization of over 600 women, making a difference in Sussex County and Coastal Delaware.

Please note that 100% of all proceeds go directly to the local charities; keeping it, here, in Sussex County.

img_4114

This was going to be the last lunch of the season until next September.  The location was the beautiful Baywood Greens Golf Club located on Rt. 24 in Long Neck, Delaware.

dscn3946

This last luncheon was sold out in 2 days.  That’s how popular it is.  Upon reserving, you arrive, pay $15 for the lunch, and grab a seat at a table.  You can make new friends, just like I did.  There is a 50/50 raffle.  Throughout the room you will find silent auction items. You can buy as many tickets as you want.  So many items; the community, the artists, the shops, and restaurants, have been so generous.

dscn3943

The ladies were moving around the silent auction, or stopping at the bar to get a drink.  This room probably held about 250 people and if was completely full.

dscn3944

When you make a reservation for one of these luncheons, you have a couple of choices of food.  Jody had chosen a salad for me, which was light and delicious.

dscn3954

Other choices were a chicken sandwich and a vegetarian sandwich.  Cookies for dessert.

dscn3958

dscn3957

Cheryl Mitchell welcomed everyone.  Announcements were made regarding the funds raised for this year and believe me it was an impressive number considering that they only meet once a month for not even a full year.

dscn3953

The charity chosen for this last luncheon was the Alzheimer’s Association – Early Diagnosis.  Sussex County falls under the Delaware Valley Chapter.  The address is 108 N. Bedford St., P.O. Box 625, Georgetown, DE 19947.  Tel. 302-854-9788 or visit www.alz.org/desjsepa.  The color purple was on flowers and other decorations; it is the color of Alzheimer.

The lady that spoke works for the Alzheimer’s Association.  For me she became the new face of Alzheimer’s.  She spoke of her warning signs, her diagnosis, her daily life, and looking towards the future.  She does not let Alzheimer’s define her.  The way she spoke was moving.  Most, in that luncheon, new of someone with Alzheimer’s.  Her words were deep and very emotional to all of us that were there.

If you would like to know more about Lunch With A Purpose, please contact Cheryl Mitchell at cherylmitchell13@gmail.com.

There were a few winners at my table; I was not one of them.  I put so many tickets on the golf package at The Peninsula.  I was sure I would get that one.

dscn3959

Time flew by and it was time to say our good-byes….It is so funny when I think of how this area is called “Slower Lower Delaware”…no way.  Look at us now.

What a nice afternoon!!  Talk to you later.

img_4124

Note:  When attending a luncheon, please bring canned goods.  All of them will be given to the Delaware Food Bank.

Eating in…Milton, Delaware, The Vintage Cafe, Breakfast, Lunch, Open Tuesday through Saturday, Restaurant, Review

dscn3390

This post came about because 2 Facebook friends decided to meet face to face.  The town of Milton, Delaware, was our choice.  Just in case you do not know, the historic town of Milton is about 20 to 25 minutes north of Rehoboth Beach.

Small businesses and historic homes is what you will find in Milton.  It is located at the head of the Broadkill River, which feeds into the Delaware Bay.  Because of its location, it was an ideal place for shipbuilding in the old days.

dscn3394

Historic Milton is, really, set in a rural setting.  The pace?  Well, I think you would find it to be quiet and leisurely; definitely, small town America.

dscn3398

Are you a history buff?  “Milton is the birthplace of 5 governors, a town divided in allegiance during the Civil War, house to many officers who participated in the War of 1812, and rich in agricultural and political facts.”

Button making?  Large mother of pearl shells were once shipped to Milton from the South Pacific.  The button blanks were cut and polished and then shipped to the northeast for more decoration and use on garments of all kinds.

If you like ice cream, Milton is the home of King’s Ice Cream with locations in Milton and Lewes.

You can find these facts and more at www.historicmilton.com.

When Kathy told me that The Vintage Cafe would be a good spot for our meeting, I was excited to check another place.  The Vintage Cafe is located at 113 Union Street, Milton DE 19968.  Tel. 302-684-3480.  Email vintagecafemilton@gmail.com.  The owner is Ami Rae.

dscn3399

The Cafe opens Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.  If you are coming for breakfast you will find delectable offerings, including muffins, scones, and croissants.  Of course, coffees, teas, espresso, capuccinos and lattes.

The baked goods are fresh and the soups are homemade.  You can eat in, take out, and if you have an event, they can event cater.

The Cafe also carries gluten free baked goods, but it would be best to call them and see what’s available.

A PopStand! CakePop is a cake dipped in candy coating on a stick.  Please call Ami Rae, who is the CakePop Pro at 302-684-3480.  These can make the perfect gift, fun for parties, and a conversation piece for weddings.  Flavors and colors can be customized, as well.

dscn3389

Kathy and I greeted each other and proceeded to sit down and take a look at the menu.  There is a board with the daily specials.

dscn3391

And, this is what we had:

Kathy had Beans in the Garden, which was spinach, tomato, black beans, cheddar and brown rice, with red pepper aioli in a tortilla.  She thought it was delicious.  Kathy stops frequently at the Cafe when coming through Milton.

dscn3386

I decided on The Farmer.  I thought the combination of country ham with cheddar, green apple and sweet hot mustard on a ciabatta roll made an interesting combination.  It did not disappoint; it was perfect.

dscn3385

We decided that our sandwiches were enough.  The portions were a good size so we took half of them home.  By the way, the prices are very reasonable, the service was good and offered with a friendly smile.

Lunch with a new friend, in a historic town, at The Vintage Cafe, made for a great afternoon.

Talk to you later…
