Bake Shops, Breakfast, Restaurants, Baked Goods, Coffee, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, Open for Breakfast

I know you might not be able to think on New Year’s Day, so let me help you a bit.  Dowtown Rehoboth Beach has 3 very good and very different bakeries; all with their own unique specialties.  One thing in common is that they do offer coffee, and come New Year’s Day, well, that might be something very much needed.

Are you staying in a hotel in Rehoboth?  Or, crashing at a friend’s house?  All these bakeries are pretty much within walking distance if you are staying in town.  Well, you might want to drive to Pasqualini’s.  So, let’s get down to business.

Pasqualini’s Bakery is located at 375 Atlantic Avenue, Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. is 302-227-2111, 302-227-1086.  They are right behind the Crystal Restaurant.  Their website is www.pasqualini.com

I stopped and found out that they will be open for business all week-end.  Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.  On Sunday, they will be selling all their baked goods at 50%.  Yes, they are taking off until March when they will open the week-end of the Chocolate Festival.

The bakery smelled delicious; they all do.  Their coffee cakes are shipped all over the country.

Beautiful pies were displayed and I was drooling.

IMG_1182

The fresh baked breads looked amazing.

The Bake Shoppe is located at 222 Rehoboth Ave., tel. 302-226-0176.  They have been in this location for 12 years and continue to open year-round.

IMG_1191

When I stopped for that brief visit, they were peeling apples, already plenty of baked goods were gone and they were getting ready for a busy week-end.

They are the home of the Split Cream Donut, which I had the pleasure of eating completely when I wrote a post on 9/6/10.  If you want to see that post just click on the month of September, 2010 and scroll down to the date.

It is a full service bake shop.

Cake Break is located at 7 South First St., tel. is 302-260-9264.  Website is www.cakebreakrehoboth.com.  They are on Twitter and Facebook.

I have written about this bake shop several times but the first one was on 8/20/10.  If you would like to see it just click on the month of August 2010 and scroll down to the date.

Cake Break was referred to me by Rachel Rockstarr, who had been reading my blog.  Of the 3 bakeries, this one is the only one that can claim to be completely a nut free facility.  This is important because anyone with a nut allergy can safely go into the bake shop.

They also open every day of the week.  New chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies were out.

IMG_1193

The Christmas cookies were staring at my face.  I resisted, though.

IMG_1195

The cinnamon rolls and croissants were out too but I continued with my will power.

IMG_1192

Known for their cupcakes, they are also happy to announce that they can offer a gluten free/vegan cupcake with icing.  They are the only ones offering them at the Delaware Beaches.

If you happen to be in Rehoboth around the hour of 3 p.m., that’s when their breads come out of the oven.  They call it Aroma Bread Therapy; you know that there is nothing better than the smell of freshly baked bread.  Please stop by and enjoy.

IMG_1196

Also they have lots of specials in the local papers.  Check them out, as well.

I left with a good cup of coffee and 4 gluten free/vegan cupcakes with icing.  We have enjoyed them and are pretty much gone.

IMG_1197

The gentleman that I spoke to was buying a box full of cupcakes for his guests this week-end.  They looked delicious and I hope he enjoyed them, as well.

If you are looking for a full breakfast experience then I know of a couple of places:

The Crystal Restaurant opens every day.  They are located at 620 Rehoboth Ave.  Tel. 302-227-1088.  Plenty of parking and plenty of breakfast choices for the whole family.

IMG_1179

I wrote a post on 8/13/09.  I had just started my blog.  No, I don’t have pictures of my breakfast.  I guess I have to gather a few of those friends of mine and meet there soon.  If you want to see that post just click on August 2009 and scroll down to the date.

Greenman Juice Bar & Bistro located at 12 Wilmington Ave. is also open this week-end.  Tel. is 302-227-4901.    They are also open for lunch.  You can find them on Facebook.

I wrote a post on 12/17/10 and if you would like to see it, please click on the month of December and scroll down to the date.

One of these days I will have to break down and have that amazing French Toast they offer.

I hope those choices help.  You won’t be dissappointed…..Again, a New Year….full of hope and possibilities….Have a good One!!!!

A Touch of Italy, Lewes, Delaware, Review, Salumeria, Pasticceria, Trattoria, Delaware Beaches

IMG_0493

Yesterday, I said to Michael that I wanted to invite him to the new Touch of Italy in Lewes.  It just opened up on the 26th.  How could he not agree to this invitation?  Irresistible, I know.  He was going to be my guinea pig.  I did not want to eat anything.  I have been eating too much and with the Holidays upon us, I needed to restrain myself a bit.

The new Touch of Italy is located at 101 Second Street, Lewes, Delaware.  Tel. 302-827-2730.  The website for Touch of Italy is www.touchofitalyde.com.

IMG_0503

The residents in Lewes must be thrilled.  Second Street has so many varied restaurants; for all tastes.  We have been watching that corner of Second St. and Savannah Rd. for months.  Now I was about to enter this Salumeria, Pasticceria and Trattoria.

Salumi is Italian for meats that are cured.  So, it is a “cured meat shop” carrying classic cured meats and sausages.

A Pasticceria is a pastry shop.  And, a Trattoria is an eatery; less formal than a restaurant; no printed menus, therefore, casual.

Touch of Italy was busy.  They are still moving things here or there but you can feel that it is going to be great.  The first thing that happened was that we were welcomed with an almond macaroon, half covered in chocolate.  I really did not want to eat it; then I did and I wanted more.  Don’t worry I did not.

Then I started to look around and take in the atmosphere of the place.  The hanging hams, cheeses and sausages reminded me when I was in Spain years ago and saw all the Serranos hams hanging from the ceilings.

Olives, white anchovies, roasted peppers, squid, and so much more on one section.

The cookies and pastries, some packaged and ready to go and others waiting for us, the customers.

IMG_0483

IMG_0482

Pastas, sauces and other Italian staples were ready for purchase, as well.  These are perfect for unexpected guests.

IMG_0495

IMG_0497

I talked to Lou who is one of the owners and since they had just moved in they did not have a take-out menu yet. On the corner of the shop, in glass, for everyone to see, Michael will be making fresh mozzarella, practically every day.  That room will hold instruction but that will be announced later, after they get more settled.

IMG_0502

Tables will also be available soon so that you can eat comfortably.

Then Michael finally decided on what hero to order.  A hero sandwich is called  a Po’Boy in New Orleans, a sub in many other areas or a hoagie.  The hero sandwiches are large sandwiches on baguettes that have a distinct Italian flavor.

The basic ingredients?  2 Italian meats, and provolone cheese; condiments are varied but only oil and vinegar will coat both sides of the bread.

There is a menu board at Touch of Italy and Michael chose the Rocky Marciano.   This hero had hot sopressata, sharp provolone cheese imported from Italy, roasted peppers and extra virgin olive oil, in a homemade semolina Italian bread with sesame seeds.

IMG_0492

The sopressata is an Italian cured dry salami.  It is traditionally made out of pork; fresh hams or beef are also used and often include hot peppers.  It also has a rustic look when sliced.  It is a specialty of southern Italy.

After thanking them and offering our best wishes we ran to the car.  When Michael first opened the hero sandwich he said that it just looked like a sub, which it was, basically.  But, it was only when he bit into it that the words were; “Oh, this is so good, the best I have ever had.  No, wait, maybe second best after the one I had in New York”.  He kept on going on about the combination of the meat, the cheese and the roasted peppers all complementing each other.  The bread was outstanding.  I knew he was going to be my perfect guinea pig; he has had his share of heros/subs.  Finally, he gave me a bite; ditto.

Please note that Touch of Italy has another location on 33A Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-226-1500.  I wrote a post when they first opened.  If you would like to see it, just go on the left hand side of this blog and click on October, 2009, under Archives and scroll down to the 16th.

Best wishes to Touch of Italy…..and talk to you later….

One World Cafe, Vegan, Restaurant, Review, Stony Run Trail, Baltimore, Maryland

You wonder if I am still blogging about the beaches.  Of course, but I had a little detour and I do love checking other places out.  So, my posts this past week have reflected that.

Last week I was in Baltimore and Susie and I took off for a long walk.  By the way, Susie is my sister in law and an avid walker.  We had a destination in mind, this being the One World Cafe but in order to get there and have breakfast we needed to walk close to 2 miles.

We took a trail called the Stony Run Trail.  It was a beautiful autumn day.  The Stony Run Trail follows the railroad bed of the former Baltimore & Delta/Maryland Central.  Service began between Baltimore and Towson in 1882.  Then in 1891 the Maryland Central merged to form the Baltimore & Lehigh Railroad, then to merge again to form the Ma & Pa in 1901, which was in service into the 1950’s.

100_5111

100_5115

There are no railroads running now on this beautiful trail that navigates through very pretty neighborhoods.  The restoration of the Stony Run Stream has been completed and community involvement has been on-going to prevent erosion and to improve the condition of the trail.  Native plants, trees and shrubs have been planted and the trail is used by walkers, runners, and bikers.

100_5112

100_5114

So, if you like to walk this trail is a “way to travel” in Roland Park.  It connects a lot of great destinations in the northern Baltimore suburbs; to the Baltimore Museum of Arts, Johns Hopkins Campus, Charles Village, Roland Park, Hampden and Remington.  If you are acquainted with Baltimore, then you know that all these neighborhoods are known for their wonderful restaurants and shops.

100_5116

Finally we arrived at One World Cafe located at 100 W. University Parkway.  Tel. 410-235-5777.  Website is www.one-world-cafe.com.  It is practically, across Johns Hopkins University.

100_5119

One World Cafe reminded me of some of the restaurants that I visited in Boulder, Colorado.  It was eclectic and bohemian.

100_5131

Their motto?  “Healthy vegetarian cuisine in a casual, eclectic atmosphere.”

One World Cafe serves organic and chemical free fruits, vegetables and whole grains, whenever possible.

Their menu reflect the vegan items; vegan desserts, fair trade organic coffee, organic wine, beer or local brews.  The restaurant has a full service bar that is open until 2 a.m.

100_5124

If you are someone that has a food allergy, this restaurant is very aware and sensitive to those with dietary limitations.

We were hungry but coffee was on my mind.  I had one of the best cups of coffee in a long time.  I should say a large cup of coffee.  I like my coffee with a bold taste and it was rich and foamy and perfect!!  The barista outdid himself.  I told him so.

100_5122

Next I ordered a Smoked Salmon Omelette, which had smoked salmon, red onion, tomato and capers.  Served with multi grain bread.  On the menu it stated that if you ate gluten free, then avoid the bread.  Delicious.

100_5130

I wanted to try the vegan meatless sausage patties and they were very good, as well.

100_5129

Susie ordered the Blue Corn Cakes and she got 2 large pancakes served with butter and organic maple syrup.

100_5127

She wanted to try the Fakin Bacon.  She liked my sausage better but I liked the bacon just as much as the sausage.

100_5128

Even though we only had breakfast, the dinner menu looked very interesting and I would love to come back and try some of their offerings.

I found the restaurant very comforting, a neighborhood restaurant where you can just stop by and have just a cup of coffee, read the paper sitting on one of the sofas, tables, or at the bar and have breakfast, just like we did.

One World Cafe is open Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. and on Sundays from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Have a great day!!!…Talk to you later….
