Little Chief Owl - 8/31/1994

Little Chief Owl - 8/31/1994

Many years ago, 1976, even before I considered living in Bethany Beach, I came to this town and right on Garfield Parkway there was a fairly young man, with his dog, and a small fire; it was fall.  He was sculpting and his name was Peter Wolf Toth.  I engaged him in conversation and he proceeded to tell me that he was donating the sculpting of the indigenous wood of the State of Delaware as a gift.  The sculpture was to be known as Chief Little Owl and Peter Wolf Toth was paying honor to the Nanticoke Nation.

He was working there for so long that residents would bring him food.

Peter Wolf Toth was self taught and a humanitarian who wanted to give thanks to the United States.  His journey was called “Trail of the Whispering Giants”.

He created more than 50 sculptures of famous Indians and donated one to every state.  Some larger states have more than one.

His original sculpture, of Chief Little Owl, who welcomes  everyone that visits Bethany Beach was weakened by termites and in 1992 it was destroyed by heavy winds.  The remains are at the Nanticoke Indian Museum in Millsboro, Delaware.

The second Totem Pole was done by Dennis Beach and this one lasted until 2000; rot forced the town to take it down.

My picture is from the second one, taken on 8/31/94.

Peter Wolf Toth, again, created the newest version from a red cedar log from the Pacific Northwest which should last 50-150 years.  It was dedicated on 7/15/02.

You cannot miss it.  It is really a landmark in Bethany Beach.

Sweet White Corn-Farmers Markets

100_1065It does not matter what town you are visiting, there is a resurgence for fresh produce, baked goods and local findings and what better place to get all these goodies than at a local farmers market.  I have been to some in San Diego, Boulder, and you will also find them in all the beach towns.

In Lewes, Delaware, every Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon, the farmers market is located on 110 Shipcarpenters St.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware has its own farmers market on Tuesdays from noon until 4 p.m. at the Grove Park by the round about and behind the Chamber of Commerce.

Bethany Beach is not staying behind and this beach town holds its market on Sundays from 8 a.m. until noon.

Fenwick Island, Delaware, south of Bethany Beach has one on Fridays from 8 a.m. until noon in the Chamber’s Information Center’s parking lot on Rt. 1, North of Fenwick.

Ocean City, Maryland, don’t worry I am not forgetting you either because I know that one of your markets is at the Phillips Restaurant’s parking lot on 142nd St. and Coastal Highway on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. For more information call Paul Wood at 410-860-2607.

What I am looking forwward the most in the summer is that sweet local white corn.  In our household, we practically eat it every day.  I told you before how my husband is a fan of corn and loves the one served at Agave in Lewes.  I have been trying to duplicate that one. Not yet, but soon, though.

So, Freeman, has, I kid you not, the best corn in the area.  You might find other sweet corn and you may say “no, I found a sweeter one” but in my eyes, his is the best and has it until mid September.  I don’t think anyone can match that one.  You can find Freeman’s corn at the Farmers Markets in Lewes and Rehoboth Beach.  But, you can also find him every day in the afternoon on the 1D road that runs parallel to Coastal Highway, Rt. 1.  He is by the Plantations complex.  I am such a fan of this corn that I package it and send it to my parents in Puerto Rico as a gift.  So let us say I pay $5.50 per dozen and then I just sent 3 dozen, well with the shipping being $103, hmmm it is like liquid gold.  By the way, you would think that in Puerto Rico they would grow corn but they can’t. They can only grow the field corn; something in the soil, I believe.

With the kind of rain we have had in the Delmarva Peninsula, this year’s crop should be spectacular so steam it, boil it, bake it or grill it. It should be great!!  See you, later. Gloria
