Eating is not merely a material pleasure.  Eating well gives a spectacular joy to life and contributes immensely to goodwill and happy companionship.  It is of great importance to the morale.  elsa schiaparelli

Meeting friends on trendy Baltimore Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach….we were trying to grab dinner at favorite restaurants of mine before the crowds arrive and the meters come into effect.

Rehoboth Beach is known for its culinary excellence.  The chefs are really outdoing themselves.  I think when visitors arrive this week-end they will see that there are other restaurants now manking an appearance in town.  But I never forget the true and tried restaurants.  Over the years I keep coming back to those establishments that give me good service, let me chat with friends without intrusion, and serve food cooked with the best ingredients.

I always have loved Eden.  When someone asks me where to go in Rehoboth for a special dinner Eden always comes to mind.  The staff is so professional.  And don’t get me wrong I love plenty of other restaurants in Southern Delaware, but Eden is on the top of my list.

Eden is located at 23 Baltimore Avenue.  Tel. 302-227-3330  Website?  http://www.edenrestaurant.com

The website is informative.  Eden offers catering.  On Fridays Eden Classic Dishes are half price.  And don’t forget that the bar is always open.

Meeting Madelon and Cindi for dinner we arrived early, which was the perfect opportunity for photos.  The dining room is open and the booths are perfect for an intimate dinner.

And two of us had the Venison, which looked as good as it tasted.

At Eden there are always various desserts…..but the Chef’s Daily Whim was a tribute to the Almond Joy…..decadent and totally sinful!!

I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Week-End.  Don’t be shy, try Rehoboth Beach Bests Restaurants….you will not be disappointed!!

Healthy Cooking, Summer Ready?, Modern Mixture, Restaurant, Cocina Latina, New Age, Gluten Free Awareness, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Southern Delaware

dscn8860

Jody and I parked on Wilmington Avenue and right by Penny Lane.  It looked so pretty on Friday evening as we strolled the Avenue.  Pretty soon the crowds will be here and so, we, the residents, love to take the opportunity to stroll, shop and grab something to eat before the season arrives.

Our choice was Modern Mixture.  I love writing about this restaurant because Leo is cooking very healthy for those of us that want to shed a few pounds and get ready for Summer 2014.  And, if you have a gluten allergy, Modern Mixture is very aware of customers with allergies and sensitivities.

Modern Mixture is located at 62A Rehoboth Avenue.  Tel. 302-227-0600.  The website?  http://www.modern-mixture.com.  He has a liquor license as well.  Leo takes pride in his cooking, using fresh ingredients and plenty of herbs to give a unique flavor to his dishes.

Every day special soups are being prepared in his kitchen.  Ask:  Cual es la sopa del dia?  On cool days or evenings is all you would need.

dscn8471

His chopped salads are very good, as well. He can customize any to your liking.

dscn8470

On Friday Jody and I had the Modern Mixture’s House, which had romaine, onion, tomato, and fresh cactus called “nopalito”, feta, and lime juice topped with avocado.

dscn8862

If you just want a healthy smoothie, they are the best!

dscn8469

Leo gave us Mexican “breads”….we took them home for breakfast in the a.m.   A hint of cinnamon and sugar….someone in my home ate it.

dscn8863

So if you are new in town….give it a try.  Have a good one.

Rehoboth Beach Eats! GreenMan, Juice Bar, Bistro, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn6861

Looking for a place to have breakfast before hitting the tax free shopping in Rehoboth Beach?  Hopefully, the day will turn out at pretty as Friday, when Rehoboth Beach was a bit chilly but with a bright blue sky…..The award-winning Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk was quiet around 8:15 a.m.  Believe me, I like it that way.  Hard to believe how crowded it does get during the height of the season.  On Friday, all Jody and I were doing was having breakfast at GreenMan.

dscn6859dscn6868

GreenMan is a juice bar, and a bistro.  Located at 12 Wilmington Ave., which is one street south of Rehoboth Avenue.  They open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  For sure you can count on them Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  They have been opening on Monday but it would be best to call 302-227-4909 to make sure.  They will be open the day before and after Christmas, as well.

dscn6869

Cozy and comfortable inside…during the summer months outside on their porch…dining is the best!!  Their website is http://www.greenmanjuicebar.com.  Lots to choose; an extensive menu.  Gluten free bread is available for those with a gluten allergy.

Homemade quiche for Jody….you can also order a whole quiche for those unexpected guests.

dscn6865

And, for me?  I had a craving for smoked salmon.  It was so good.

dscn6867

Have a great day!!

Little Fig Cakes, Modern Mixture, Spanish Custom, Cafe Con Leche….Yum!! Delaware Beaches, Rehoboth Beach, Southern Delaware, Friday, 10/8, Saturday, 10/9, Dru Tevis will be making yeast donuts, Fresh and to Order

dscn6353

I remember growing up in the Island of Puerto Rico.  The Spanish culture is one that likes to enjoy the good things in life.  The small towns in Puerto Rico, when I was growing up, were what towns throughout the U.S. are trying to achieve now….that Main Street type of atmosphere.  That sense of being able to walk the sidewalks, greet your neighbors and plenty of times, be invited for a good cup of coffe, by a neighbor or relative…Cafe con Lefche, which is coffee with milk, or a Cafe Cortado, which only has some milk, or the classic Spanish Pocillo.  The coffee would be accompanied by a sweet pastry or cake.

Which brings me to my short post.  Leo Cabrera is the owner of Modern Mixture, located at 62A Rehoboth Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-0600.  Website?  http://www.modern-mixture.com His restaurant is the talk of the town.  Leo serves food that is fresh, healthy and exciting.  He closes on Tuesdays and on Sundays he is open until 3 p.m.  Otherwise, he is open.  You may call him and ask him what’s cooking on that particular day.

Modern Mixture is casual and Leo prepares great specialty drinks.

So, when Leo called me to tell me that he had fig cakes for me I ran.  The cakes were made with fig jam, from the figs tha I had given him.  They were so good and brought me those memories above mentioned….particularly the coffee at my grandmother’s house.

The little fig cakes had just the right amout of sweetness…the fig jam doing its job.  A little bit of cheese, complemented the fig jam.  The consistency was light and it reminded me a bit of cheesecake….definitely lighter, though.

dscn6357

I liked them so much I decided that they belonged as a featured post.  Thank you Leo….I loved them!!  So simple and sweet.

Note:  Stop by on Friday, 10/8 and Saturday, 10/9 at Modern Mixture from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. when Dru Tevis will be making yeast donuts fresh and to order.

Rehoboth Beach Dines, Bramble & Brine, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Traditional Fare, Fresh Ingredients, Restaurant, Review, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware…Autumn Menu

dscn6178

What makes a good restaurant?  To me, those 5 key ingredients do not fail:  Quality of Ingredients, Culinary Competence, Service, Ambiance, and Price.  The ingredients should be the best money can buy.  The culinary competence …the new chefs at Bramble & Brine are bringing to the table traditional fare with fresh ingredients prepared with innovative ways..sounds good, right?  The restaurant just opened, but it is already the talk of the town.  The service should be attentive; not intrusive, always anticipating the customer’s needs.  The ambiance should be tranquil and relaxing, conducive to great conversation. And, the prices should reflect the establishment…restaurants in Rehoboth Beach are known for serving quality food.  Jody and I found that these fit the bill at Bramble & Brine.

dscn6158dscn6156

Jody and I are usually on the same page.  We love finding new places to eat or just taking a road trip to check out Southern Delaware.  Bramble & Brine is located at 315 Rehoboth Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  Tel. 302-227-7702.  Website?  http://www.brambleandbrine.com.  You can find them on Facebook as The Bramble and Brine.  Open every day, except Wednesday.

I loved the idea that I had not read one single review.  First impressions were good.  The building looks fantastic and the renovations had been ongoing for months.  The owners are Megan and Joe Churchman, locals who are undertaking the big task of feeding all of us with discriminating palates in Rehoboth Beach.  The town is known for its culinary excellence….it is actually a foodies’ destination.

dscn6163

Megan greeted us with a big smile and introductions were made.  Bramble & Brine does accept reservations.  We arrived early so we could take plenty of photos.

dscn6155

The Bar is located as you enter the restaurant with views to Rehoboth Avenue.

dscn6154

Vintage chandeliers, roses in the designs, a soft, yet cottage style decor with unassuming good taste…Bramble & Brine is Shabby Chic; elegant but not opulent.

dscn6161dscn6160

We started with bread and a rosemary butter…a little sparkling water, as well.

dscn6164

Our server gave us some suggestions and I am glad we took them.  We started our dining adventure with a Savory Pumpkin & Sunchoke Pate.  It had crispy speck, parmesan and thyme crisp, and a balsamic caviar.  The bacon was so thin and crispy and the balsamic caviar was delicious.

dscn6165

I love calamari.  These were different.  They were Smoked Calamari with shaved artichoke, radish, lemongrass and squid ink dressing, grape oil and a pistachio dust.  Really great combination of flavors.

dscn6166

Jody ordered a Chestnut Smoked Ricotta Salata.  It had beets, cucumbers, pea tendrils, micro basil, bread and butter pickle dressing.

dscn6167

For my entree I ordered the Pan Seared Halibut with sage brown butter, artichoke, celery-scented couscous salad.  The halibut was crispy on the outside and perfectly seasoned, as well.  The couscous salad was particularly good too.

dscn6170

Jody’s entree looked amazing.  It was a Seared Butternut Squash Filet with squash trio puree, crispy taro root, grilled rapini, and a mushroom demi.

dscn6168

For dessert we chose French pressed coffee and Bramble & Brine Churros with Chocolate Sauce for sharing……a perfect ending for a perfect evening.  Just the right amount of sweetness!!

dscn6174

The Second Season in Rehoboth Beach brings plenty of events and festivals.  Bramble & Brine is open and waiting for you.  Let me know how you like it.  Talk to you later.

Dining, Henlopen City Oyster House, Restaurant, Review, The Second Season, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware,

dscn9864dscn9844

Cathy and I decided to stop for something to eat at one of the most popular restaurants in this coastal town…Henlopen City Oyster House.  It is located on 50 Wilmington Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-260-9193.  Website?  http://www.hcoysterhouse.com.  Open for lunch and dinner…no reservations.

It was surprising to see Rehoboth Beach so crowded on a Tuesday night.  Almost no parking…can you believe it?  It is a thing of the past when Rehoboth Beach used to roll up its sidewalks until the following season.  No way…this is a year-round resort.  Very vibrant, offering its visitors and residents something to do, practically every night of the week.

I love this restaurant….it never disappoints.  Fresh seafood, salty oysters, beer, specialty drinks, and wine.

A Fruit and Nut Salad offered sliced apple, five spice pumpkin seeds, candied walnuts, dried cherries, bleu cheese, and a while balsamic dressing.  A substantial salad full of flavor.

dscn5882

I love beets and their Roasted Beet salad contained sunflower seeds, pickled radish, feta cheese, mixed greens, drizzled with a balsamic reduction.  Very good!!

dscn5883

The Herb Grilled Maryland Rockfish was ordered by Cathy and it was grilled and lightly brushed with an herb olive oil, served with her choide of seasonal veggies and braised kale.  Seasoned to perfection!

dscn5885

I ordered the Sesame & Spice Seared New Zealand Hapuka Seabass with spicy coconut green bamboo rice, lobster mushrooms, zipper peas, grilled long beans, and a cashew curry sauce.   All those combinations gave this dish an array of flavors that were truly delicious.

dscn5886

Even though the desserts can be tempting at Henlopen City Oyster House, we were very satisfied.  Perhaps another time.

Talk to you later….have a good one!!

Rehoboth Beach Eats, Lupo Di Mare, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Restaurant, Review, The Second Season!!, No Meters!!, Women & Wine, Tuesday, 9/24, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn5515

You know the locals are dancing in the streets….the meters are down and the favorite restaurants begin their Second Season Specials.  Even Ocean City friends decided to make that “long” trip to Rehoboth Beach.

So, our choice for the evening was Lupo di Mare, located at 247 C Rehoboth Avenue, in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-226-2240.  Website?  http://www.lupodimarerehoboth.com.  No reservations, just show up.

dscn5516

Lupo Di Mare is part of the group of restaurants owned by restauranteur, Matt Haley, and his company Sodel Concepts.  Up and down the Delaware Beaches his restaurants are serving dishes full of flavor incorporating spices, fresh and healthy ingredients.  His cuisine?  Innovative!

Monday nights at Lupo you will find that your entire dinner will be %25 off!!  So, there we were, Cindi, Ross, and myself.

The bar was small but cozy.

dscn5514

The selection of wines was extensive.

dscn5499

Our server was charming and new the menu so well.  The bread was so good; a little sweet and the olive oil was smooth.

dscn5512

dscn5501

One of my favorite appetizers..I could have it daily…the Shaved Brussels Sprouts.  Only 3 ingredients are added to the shaved sprouts:  truffle oil, almonds and pecorino.

dscn5504

The prosciutto…always salty; love it!  Perfect with the sweet bread.

dscn5502

For dinner a Chicken Parmesan – red sauce spaghetti, and mozzarella.  Our server knew there was someone at our table with a food allergy.  Suggestions were made…and a wonderful dish was enjoyed.

dscn5506

Cindi’s Salmon looked beautiful.  Her exact words were “delish”.

dscn5505

And, my Braised Pork Bolognese was out of this world….I wanted that comfort food and I got it.

dscn5507

Cindi and I shared the Flourless Chocolate Torte…if you like chocolate, this, you will like.

dscn5508

So much to catch up, I think we forgot that we were closing the restaurant down.  Perfect for photos….check it out.

dscn5510

dscn5513
