Driving or walking around Rehoboth Beach you will see that is in full bloom.  The gorgeous azaleas are not yet at their peak, but getting there.

If you are in Rehoboth Beach today, well, at the time of this writing the weather does not look that great.  The famous Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market is opening its doors today, May 1st.  Rain or Shine!!  From Noon to 4 p.m. the vendors will be there to show off their produce. 

The Farmers’ Market is part of the Rehoboth Beach community, with 100% of the profits going to the farmers.  Baked goods, flowers, chef demos, always on Tuesdays.  You can find the Farmers’ Market by the only roundabout in Rehoboth Beach, behind the Chamber of Commerce.

Tuesday, May 2nd – Clear Space Theatre Company, located at 20 Baltimore Ave., in Rehoboth Beach will be joining forces with Bethany Blues Lews to raise funds for and awareness of the non-profit organization, in support of the performing arts in our community.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, 4/2 from 4 – 7 p.m.

During those hours, patrons who present a coupon provided by Clear Space to their server, will have a portion of their total bill donated directly back to Clear Space.  Members of the Board of Directors will be on hand for the evening, as well as members of the acting company, staff and volunteers to field questions patrons may have about the organization.

Tuesday, May 2nd – From the Rehoboth Beach Film Society, the next Around the World screening will be taking place.  Around the World features critically acclaimed, international, independent films.  Free to the public.

The screening will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the upstairs room at Movies at Midway, located on Coastal Highway.

Before Their Eyes – It is a moving drama about ten-year old Gulistan and her younger brother, Firat, who live happily with their parents in the heart of Turkish Kurdistan.  Suddenly, tragedy strikes when their mother and father are shot down by paramilitary gunmen before their eyes.

Traumatized and orphaned, Gulistan and Firat try to care for the infant sister, but their money soon runs out and they’re forced onto the street.  It is there that Gulistan meets the part-time escort Dilara.  Accompanying her on a hotel call one day, Gulistan is shocked to discover Dilara’s client is the murderer of her parents, and quickly devises a plan for revenge.  Running time is 102 minutes.  Not rated.  In Kurdish with English subtitles.

On Saturday, May 5th – Residents are invited to the Rehoboth Beach Museum at 2 p.m. for an unusual presentation of vintage wedding clothing.  Mike Connolly, Director of the New Castle Historical Society will present a review of an exhibit titled Tying the Knot – New Castle Nuptials Since 1784.

Examples from the collection will be on view for the program.  Images from the exhibit that took place in New Castle in 2010 will be shown.  The original exhibit featured 14 wedding dresses dating from 1784 through 1935.  Mr. Connolly will discuss how the exhibit was organized and the challenges in presenting such fragile items.  Regular admission rates apply.  $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, college students and military, $2 for children ages 13-17.  Members and children 12 and under are free.  There is also a AAA discount.

The other exhibit, ORBS is located at The Homestead.

Friday, May 4th through Sunday, May 6th – Last week-end to see the Designer Show House.  A vintage 1920 Rehoboth Beach Home, decorated by preeminent interior and landscape designers.  It is located at 10 4th St.

What’s Going On?, Delaware Beaches, Activities, Events, Entertainment

The Delaware Beaches have not taken a break this winter.  Every time I thought that there was nothing going on, they again surprised me with events, activities, and entertainment.  They bring visitors to the beach.  And, long gone are those days when all I would encounter on the roads was a car here or there.  Lately, the week-ends have been so crowded that it had been difficult to find parking in downtown Rehoboth Beach.

So what’st going on?  Read on….

Lewes

Friday and Saturday, 2/10 and 2/11 – It is the 6th Annual Lewes Winter Fest Barkfest & Pet Pageant.  It is a 2 day event taking place in the historic commercial district in Lewes.  Around Second Street and across the canal at Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant.  If you are visiting Lewes this week-end you will find Valentine-themed specials and discounts.

The Barkfest has 2 activities:  The “Yappy Hour” at Irish Eyes from 5-7 p.m. on Friday.  Special beverages like the “Mutt-ini” and “Cat-atonic”, for Pets and People who like to “Yap”. Irish Eyes is located at 213 Anglers Rd.  The Pet Pageant is the other activity.  It will be on Bank Street, (renamed Bark Street for this special event) on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.

The Pet Pageant is a competition with 4 categories:  formal wear, leisure wear, companion look-alike, and kids freestyle (open to kids only).  Advance registration for the pageant will take place at P.U.P.S. (Pawsitively Unique Pet Shop) on Second St. and in front of the Citizen’s Bank on Second St.on the day of the event.

Please note that this event will be benefiting the Georgetown S.P.C.A., which will also be collecting donations of blankets, sheets, pet food, kitty litter, pet toys, dog bones, and bleach for kennel cleaning to “Fill the Van” during both the Yappy Hour and Pet Pageant events.

Rehoboth Beach

Friday, 2/10 – The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is pleased to present a screening of “Money Matters” as part of the On Screen/In Person tour.  The screening will take place at 2 p.m. at the Theater in the Education and Humanities Building, at Delaware State University in Dover, Delaware.

“Money Matters” director, Ryan Richmond will be present to introduce the film.  A graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Ryan Richmond began his film career as a cinematographer, during which he shot more than 60 films and music videos.  Emerging filmmakers can take this opportunity to meet Ryan and discuss the challenges and triumphs he experienced in making his directorial debut.

This coming of age drama follows a 14 year old biracial girl, Monique (aka “Money”) Matters, as she navigates the inner city.  Her relationship with her sickly, single mother, Pamela, is strained, because her mother wrestles with her personal demons by thrusting religion onto Money as a way to repent for her own mistakes…

Note:  Rehoboth Beach Film Society has been selected by the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation to be a host site for the first year of the On Screen/In Person film touring program.  The goal is to bring the vision of some of the country’s best independent filmmakers to a broad audience throughout the mid-Atlantic region, especially in communities with limited access to their work.

Saturday, 2/11 – Merchants’ Attic I – The State’s Largest Indoor Garage Sale.  Venue?  The Rehoboth Beach Convention Hall, 229 Rehoboth Avenue.  The doors will open at 9:30 a.m., rain or shine.  The hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  No admission fee; however donations for the benefit of the Chamber Event Fund are appreciated.  Vendors include Odysea, Josephine’s Daughter, The Pelican Loft and many more!!  For more info. please call The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce at 302-227-6446 or visit the website www.beach-fun.com.

The other day someone mentioned that Rehoboth has done such a good job in keeping everyone coming back to the beach, by offering so much every week-end.  As I checked the Delaware Beaches, Ocean City, Maryland, Berlin and all those other towns that surround the coast, believe me when I tell you that you can do as little or as much as you want. 

Following is just a taste of what is happening in Rehoboth this week-end.

Friday – Sunday, 11/4 – 11/6 –  How can we forget the Annual Punkin Chunkin.  Since 1986 and now a huge festival.  It got so big that it had to leave the beach for the town of Bridgeville.  They said the field is full so you know that there will be lots of machinery trying to capture or defend a title.

Friday 11/4 – It is called the Cocoa Crawl – In Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Lots of fun from 5 until 9 p.m. when you can stroll around town and take advantage of great deals.  Local artists and local restaurants will be on-hand.  Call for more info. 302-226-9650.

 

Saturday, 11/5 – It is the 2011 Holiday Fair at The Rehoboth Art League.  It is a Fine Art and Fine Craft Show, right at The League located at 12 Dodds Lane.  Tel. 302-227-8408.  Website? http://www.rehobothartleague.org/holiday_fair.html.

The $5 donation will get you a raffle ticket.  The fair is from 10 a.m.  until 4 p.m.

There will be about 30 fine arts and crafts artists with jewelry, glasswork, pottery, clay sculpture, painting, woodworking, mixed media and much more.

 

Saturday – 11/5 – It is the 9th Annual City of Rehoboth Beach Municipal Auction at 10 a.m. at City Hall parking lot on Rehoboth Ave. 

There will be so much; vehicles, computers, cameras, boardwalk benches, bikes, confiscated merchandise, etc. etc.  You can inspect the lot on Friday, 11/4, from 3 – 5 p.m. and on Saturday, 11/5, before the auction, at 9 a.m.

 

Saturday, 11/5 – Artisan Open House from 3 – 6 p.m. at Furniture and More located at Coastal Highway.  It is a fundraising event for Habitat for Humanity in Sussex County.  10% of Furniture and More’s sales during the event will go for this great cause.  More Info?  Please call 302-226-5900.  Website?  www.furnitureandmoregalleries.com.

So just for these 2 days you will be able to see Mark Twain! On Stage – Actor John Chappell brings the famed penman and humorist, Mark Twain back to life before you very own eyes.
