Saketumi, Rehoboth Beach, Sushi Bar, Lounge, Modern Asian Cuisine, Restaurant, Review, Delaware Beaches

100_3482

I have mentioned before that I practically go to the grocery store every day.  Regarding dinner, I never know what will strike my mood as that favorite time of the day approaches.

Some times I like to cook but in order to write a post to the blog I need to go out and have someone else cook for me.

Such was the case last night.  My mood?  Sashimi.  That’s what I eat when I go to a Sushi restaurant.  You know, sashimi is usually the first course in a formal Japanese meal.  The reason is that it is considered the finest dish; it should be eaten before other strong flavors affect the palate.

 100_3458

I went last night to Saketumi.  It is my favorite at the beach for sushi or sashimi.  It is located at 18814 Highway One, (Rt1 or Ocean Highway), Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-645-2818.  Website www.saketumirestaurant.com.

100_3483

Saketumi is a modern restaurant specializing in Asian cuisine.  They have take out, catering, Japanese, Thai, and Chinese.  They serve lunch, dinner and brunch on Sundays.

Saketumi has plenty of parking available.  And, if you are visiting or are a resident you know how important that is at this time of the year.

I like to sit at the Sushi Bar.  I get to see what is going on and interact with the Sous Chef.  At Saketumi, this would be Tanaka San.  He is an artist when it comes to presenting the food.  Just gorgeous.  You hate to disturb the plate.

Tanaka  has always presented me with an appetizer.  I have asked him so many times what it is that I am eating,  but to tell you the truth I cannot understand what he says to me, so, I just eat and enjoy it.  The fish is in a vinegar sauce with a little bit of onion and I love it; I really do not know what it is, though.

100_3456

I could not help but take pictures of some of the dishes being prepared.

The tuna sashimi looked delicate.

100_3466

The Tuna Tuna Surprise or TTS was so colorful.  It had inside-blackened tuna, asparagus, sweet goma sauce and wasabi aioli.  Outside-akami tuna, tobiko, chive.

100_3468

The Dynamite was also beautiful.  It was a baked California roll, with spicy mayo, scallop, fresh crabmeat and masago on top.

 100_3465

A version of the Dynamite was ordered.  To make it gluten free no masago was put on top.  Extra tobiko on top.  Tobiko is flying fish roe.  Very good.

100_3470

My dish was called Pine Sashimi.  Strictly Sashimi for me.  It had tuna, yellowtail, salmon, sawara, albacore, kampachi, madai, izumidai, hirame and botan ebi.  Got it?  It was to die for.  The presentation?  A work of art.

100_3475

The albacore (tuna) was white.  I had never had it.  It was meatier, soft and buttery; melting in your mouth.

What else can I say?  I have gone so many times to Saketumi and I can honestly tell you that my service at the sushi bar and the food have been excellent.

Talk to you later….you know I will….

Liquid Assets, Ocean City, Maryland, Bistro, Bar, Restaurant, Review, Liquor Store?, Restaurant?

100_3142

One of my favorite pastimes, in case you have not realized that yet, is eating.  Not just eating, but trying new foods and restaurants that are innovative and creative.  Who wants to eat the same old boring food day in and day out?  Whether I am at the Delaware Beaches, Delray Beach, Florida, Puerto Rico, Boulder, Colorado, Baltimore, Maryland and in between I am looking for a little adventure in eating.

Yesterday, Cindi and I decided that lunch could be a nice time to catch up on what has been going on in our lives.  Better to do that while eating.

Liquid Assets has my favorite mussels.  I had a craving for them.  You have seen me try mussels lately everywhere I go.  Well, Liquid Assets mussels are the best, in my book.  I think second place would be a little Italian place in Georgetown.  But, every time I get to try them in other places my thoughts go back to the ones at Liquid Assets; just delicious!!  No comparison.

100_3157

Liquid Assets is located at 9301 Coastal Highway, Ocean City, MD.  Tel. 410-524-7037.  Website is www.LA94.com. Make sure to visit the website to check events, recipes and to find out what’s new in the wine and liquor business.

I just saw a new Vodka called Bakon Vodka.  It is a potato vodka, which is the vodka you would need to drink if you are on a gluten free diet.  Apparently, it is smooth, and slightly sweet.  No strong burn or aftertaste.  It has a savory bacon flavor with a clean crisp finish.  Interesting.

As I entered Liquid Assets again, I had to ask myself; if I did not know any better would I think I am at a liquor store or a restaurant?  The place is unique, no doubt about it.  I have not seen one like this at the Delaware Beaches.

100_3163

100_3145

The first room definitely gives you the aura of the liquor store but immediately you get to notice the big bar and tables around it; sofas amidst barrels and wine bottles.

There is another dining room that will transport you to a wine cellar, maybe in your own home or in another country. This dining room is probably more conducive to quiet conversation. It has its own bar, as well.

Cindi and I got comfortable and our waitress proceeded to let us know what specials were on the menu that day.

We decided on a bruschetta for the table that was made out of peaches.  Loved it.  Had a good kick to it.

100_3165

Cindi had the orzo salad with kalamata olives and chilled canteloupe soup.  I had a taste of the soup and it was very refreshing. It was definitely good.

100_3166

Of course, I had the mussels and they were as good as ever.  I loved the pieces of chorizo, the broth and, of course, the bread.

100_3168

A coffee to finish our meal and before we knew it, it was time to say “adios”.  Until next time.

Great getting together with friends.  What would you do without them?

Have a great day!!  Talk to you later….

Good for You Market, Natural Food Market, Lewes, Delaware, Sangria Recipe

100_2816

I was coming back from the Division of Motor Vehicles, after spending about 2 1/2 hours there.  I was just saying to my friend, Trish, not too long ago, how efficient the DMV has been since they opened their new building in Georgetown, Delaware.  She had told me her husband was there for hours; I just did not believe her until it happened to me.

Anyway, I was coming back to Rehoboth on Rt. 9, when I saw Good for You Market.  I decided to stop because I had never been there and I had heard good things about it.

100_2815

Good for You Market is located at 28841 Lewes-Georgetown Highway, Lewes, DE 19958.  Tel. 302-684-8330.  E-mail Address goodforu@comcast.net.  Website www.weknowyum.com

100_2807

From Rt. 1, going west, it will only take you about 10 minutes or less.  You cannot miss the building since it is very colorful.

Good for You Market began in 2006 as a market garden farm selling directly to restaurants and at area farmers markets.  The rest is history and what you will find now is a beautiful food market.  It combines everyday items with great gourmet ones as well.

100_2800

The market has artisan cheeses, organic produce, grass-fed meats, specialty meats and poultry, dried fruits and nuts in bulk, international gourmet foods, organic coffee beans, ethnic specialties, traditional grocery items, and household cleaning and laundry items, as well.  There is a Sandwich and Juice Bar.

100_2802

100_2803

100_2797

The store holds cheese classes and the next and last one available until September will be on July 10 at 1:00 p.m.  The subject?  What Goes Around Becomes a Rind:  Exploring the Outside of The Cheese!

100_2796

“We’re so focused on the inside:  we often forget the fascinating outside.  This is the time to appreciate what goes into the outer edge of the wheel.  Join the Good for You Market Cheesemonger as he explains the makeup of the beautiful outer edges of the cheese.  You’ll learn all about washing, rubbing, rolling, bruising, and wrapping.  In other words, how the cheese wheel ends up with that nice coating of wine, chocolate, wood ash, herbs, grape leaves, or straw patterns.  They will prove that sometimes, “A rind is a terrible thing to waste!”  Some rinds are edible and make a flavorful addition to broth, stock, soup, and sauces.”

For more information, please give them a call to the above  telephone number.

Following is a Sangria Recipe, courtesy of Good for You Market:

1 Bottle of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Rioja, Zinfandel, Shiraz)

1 Lemon cut into wedges

1 Orange cut into wedges

1 Lime cut into wedges

2 Tbsps sugar

Splash of orange juice or lemonade

2 Shots of gin or triple sec

1 Cup of raspberries or strawberries

1 Small can of diced pineapples (with juice)

4 Cups Ginger Ale

Pour wine into a large pitcher and squeeze the juice wedges from the lemon, orange and lime into the wine.

Toss in the fruit wedges (leaving out seeds, if possible), pineapple, then add sugar, orange juice and triple sec.

Chill overnight.

Add ginger ale, berries and ice just before serving.

Note:  If you would like to serve it right away, then use a chilled red wine and serve over lots of ice.  However, remember that the best Sangrias are chilled around 24 hours in the refrigerator, allowing the flavors to really marinate each other.

Enjoy!!

Nourish, Specialty Foods, Catering, Market, Review, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

100_2428

This past week I had the opportunity to taste some of the specialties prepared by Nourish.  I could not believe how good and fresh everything tasted.  I had heard about Nourish and made a mental note to stop by at some point and see what they were offering to the Rehoboth Beach community.  Today was the day.

Nourish is located at 37385 Henlopen Junction #10, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. is 302-227-6282.  The website is www.anourishingidea.com.  Fax # is 302-260-9127.   The owners?  Deberah Sutter and Lois Pellegrino.

Charcuterie (ham, sausages, pates)

Charcuterie (ham, sausages, pates)

I personally came home with some of their prepared foods:

White Anchovies.  The first time I had them was in Spain and they are so mild and delicious.  If you are not a fan of anchovies these ones might change your mind.

Chicken Apple Salad, Curry Chicken Salad, Edamame Salad, Quinoa Salad, Indonesian Rice Salad, Indian Dahl and Yingling Smoked Salmon.  All of these salads were home made.  The spices and herbs used to give them their unique flavors are individually defined as you tasted one bite after another.

Prepared Foods

Deberah told me she is from San Francisco.  When she was young her family had 6 “Taquerias”.  We were saying how people are enjoying the foods with Latin influences and considering them healthy, which they are, when prepared correctly.

100_2424

Nourish has party platters, sandwiches to order, wraps, beach food, artisanal cheeses, housemade soups, and salads.

All salsas are made in-house.  The hottest is Seriously Sassy, then there is Some Like it Hot, among others.  The fig and olive tapenade was to die for.  I might have to barter with her since I have a fig tree.

Chips?  Also home made.  Nourish is aware of individuals with celiac disease and gluten intolerances and gluten free products are available.  All of the salads I bought today were gluten free.

Seasonings, Sauces, Spices

Nourish has the availability to hold a “dinner party” in their location.  The maximum amount of people would probably be 20.  If you are interested please give them a call for further information.

Tibet Kitchen, Restaurant, Review, Boulder, Colorado

100_1484

“Gourmandise is an impassioned, rational, and habitual preference for all objects that flatter the sense of taste.”  From The Physiology of Taste

On that same train of thought I wonder, what is a delicacy?  Is it a cultural thing?  Or is it because of the unusual flavors, charasteristics or, really, because it is rare?  I think it is a combination of all those things.

Visiting Boulder gave me the opportunity to try different cuisines.  Some of them I blogged about, just like this post and some I just kept to myself.  Boulder has cuisine from all over the world, and I was ready to try it all.

After visiting the Boulder Beer Company, we decided to eat some Tibetan food.  The Tibet Kitchen was our choice.  They are located at 2359 Arapahoe Ave., Tel. 303-440-0882.  The website is http://tibetkitchen.com. They deliver, have party trays and do catering.  You may eat in or out, in their courtyard.

100_1479

100_1482

Tibet is a plateau region in Asia, north of the Himalayas.  Average elevation is 16,000 feet, therefore it is the highest region on Earth.  Considered to be  the “Roof of the World”.  Tibet is part of the People’s Republic of China and it is a land of contrasts.

It is important to know that the most important crop is barley.  Dough made from barley flour called stampa, is the staple food of Tibet.  It is rolled into noodles or made into steamed dumplings called Momos.  That is exactly what I had for lunch at the Tibet Kitchen.  These dumplings are considered a national dish.  The shape of the dumpling is symbolic of the coming together after a long interval.  At the Tibet Kitchen, they are made fresh every single day and we had a combination of the vegetarian, chicken and beef, accompanied with a hot sauce.  They were absolutely delicious.

Momos

Momos

We also had the Jhasa Shamdah, which is a chicken curry, marinated in home made yogurt and potatoes.  Delicate flavors and spices.  Very good.

Jhasa Shamdah (Chicken Curry)

Jhasa Shamdah (Chicken Curry)

It was a cool day but the sun was strong.  As we sat outside in this courtyard you could not help to look at the decorations.  They all had meaning.  I really did not know what it all meant so I started searching for some information.

100_1485

100_1488

The irons perfectly placed in pyramid form; the same with the CDs and other figurines.  They had to have symbolism.

100_1489

100_1487

The Tibet Stupa is called a Chorten in Tibetan.  It means “basis of offering”.  The Chorten is a statue or monument, often pyramid shape in structure.

The Chorten reminds those who encounter it to focus on their path to enlightenment.  The ways in which your eyes travel from its base to its dramatic crescent at its top, reflects the transition to an enlightened state.

We had such a nice lunch in this garden, taking it all in; the mountains, the beautiful weather, the clean air, happiness, the food but most of all the company. Perfect!!

Talk to you later….

At the Delaware Beaches….A Touch of Italy has arrived….in the town of Rehoboth Beach….”An Offer that Can’t be Refused”….

 000_0003

A serious accident prevented Lou from opening this Salumeria & Pasticceria at the beginning of the summer season.  But, now in the Second Season he is ready.  Tomorrow, Saturday, will be the second week since he opened this business on 33A Baltimore Ave. in Rehoboth Beach.  Telephone is 302-227-1500, fax number is 302-227-3900 and the website is www.touchofitalyde.com.

Everyone that knows him is very happy that he has been able to recuperate well and by the smile on his face, you could tell that since he opened, he has definitely been received with open arms and hungry stomachs.

It is a small store but very well stocked.   Besides Lou, you will find Diane, and Frankie.

They will have fresh mozzarella, prepared and even smoked in large barrels by Frankie, who learned this technique from Don Orazio who owns Casa della Mozzarella in New York.  They have even named one of the specialty sandwiches on behalf of Don Orazio.  I had that sandwich today and it could not have tasted better.  It had hot capicollo, fresh hand made mozzarella, and sun dried peppers.

Touch of Italy will have Italian cured meats/cheeses, Italian provisions, fresh breads, sandwiches, assorted cookies/pastries, homemade pasta and catering.000_0004

Everything is there for you to appreciate.  Hanging hams, salami and cheeses.  On the left hand side of the store you can buy all kinds of Italian pastas, including gnocchi with potato. They also have a variety of olive oils and balsamic vinegars, as well as black, green and kalamata olive spreads.000_0005

The pasta sauces looked great; marinara, fra diavolo, vodka, basil and one pasta sauce that caught my eye had sardines and fennel.  They also carry integrale pasta by Misura, as well as farina and polenta.

Juices like apricot and pear nectars, and soft drinks are available.  And, you can never forget to pick up a can of espresso coffee.

The store offers great pastries, all homemade like Italian Wedding Cookies in orange, lemon and vanilla flavors.  How about some almond macaroons? And, Biscotti; anise, chocolate chunk and almond. Cannolis filled to order, chocolate eclairs with custard, Italian cream puffs, tiramisu among others.  Aren’t you hungry already?

The breads come fresh from New York.  An assortment of olives, roasted peppers, seafood salad with octopus, and one of my favorites; white anchovies are among the many items this salumeria has to offer.000_0006

This is not a new business for these owners.  A Touch of Italy has been for years on 535 Atlantic Ave., in Milville, Delaware.  That is west of Bethany Beach.  Just a few minutes.  In that store only baked goods are available. The tel. is 302-539-1355.

Whether you are a local, a native, or just visiting for a while or the week-end you will really enjoy this new establishment in the heart of Rehoboth Beach.
