“Lewes has always been essentially a seafaring town.  Blessed with an excellent harbor, Lewes is home to a large fleet of charter fishing boats stationed on the canal along Anglers Rd.  It is also the base of the Delaware Bay and River Pilots Association, whose members guide cargo vessels to and from the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia.  The University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean & Environment makes Lewes its home.”      lewes chamber of commerce

At times I ask friends what they have been up to and usually the answer is Out & About.  So, that’s what I just did Tuesday when I went to Lewes to visit 3 friends.  What would I do without them?  Don’t know.  I find myself so lucky to have so many really good friends.  The other day I reposted on Facebook something to the effect that “it did not matter how serious life gets, you want to count on those friends you can be stupid with”.  These ladies are definitely on that level of friendship.

Lewes had taken the Christmas decorations down.  New year and new expectations for all the coastal towns.  The merchants were happy with the holidays; plenty of shoppers, fantastic weather, beautiful scenery.  Second Street is the Main Street in Lewes; a quiet day in Lewes it was.

Our choice for lunch was Striper Bites.  Lewes offers its visitors and residents many good restaurants within walking distance.  Striper Bites is located at 107 Savannah Rd., almost where Savannah Rd. meets Second St.  Tel. 302-645-4657.  Website?  www.striperbites.com.  It is a most loved neighborhood restaurant with 2 other sister restaurants in Lewes; Kindle and Half Full.

Striper Bites opens year-round, full bar, plenty of seating; in the summer outdoor dining is available all the way into fall.  Please note that they will be taking a well deserved rest; closing on Sunday, 1/15 until Thursday, 2/9.

Our server had to come a few times to our table.  You know how it is, we were trying to out talk each other; catching up.

We had a laid back lunch.  Since we are trying to watch our figure after the holidays then soup and salad is what we ordered.  To tell you the truth I should probably be eating a piece of lettuce and call it a day.  Anyway, this is what we had.

Jody and I decided on the Striper Bites House Salad.  This salad was a mixture of fresh greens with archichoke hearts, roma tomatoes, kalamata olives, cukes, red onion rings tossed in Italian vinaigrette and topped with toasted pinenuts and crumbled bleu cheese.  Jody and I decided to substitute the bleu cheese for feta cheese.

I thought the salad was very good.  After some of the food I had been eating lately, it was refreshing and light.  Toasted pinenuts added that extra crunch.

Our friend, Debbie D, had the same salad with the bleu cheese but she went the extra mile of topping it with grilled Rockfish.  She thought it was delicious.  We live on the coast and seafood is the specialty of many of our restaurants.

One friend that does not need to watch her weight is the other Debbie that was with us.  Nevertheless, a hearty beef vegetable barley soup hit the spot.  Nothing better than soup on a chilly day.  She thought it was well seasoned and the barley and vegetables were enough for a light lunch.

I looked around and the restaurant was crowded.  Good to see the people Out & About.

A few cups of coffee and tea completed what I always find a priceless time with friends.

Please note that Striper Bites opens Mondays through Saturdays from 11:30 until closing.  Check the website for specials and events; they have plenty.  It is closed on Sundays and….No reservations.

Jake’s Wayback Burgers, Rehoboth Beach, Restaurant, New Burger Joint at the Beach, Delaware Beaches….”Best Burgers under Bun”

Lately I have had this love affair with burgers.  It is part of the summertime grub.  A new “burger joint” has just opened in Rehoboth Beach.  It is the perfect location because it has plenty of parking.  So, Michael and I decided to check it out and taste it ourselves.

Jake’s Wayback Burgers is located at 19324 Lighthouse Plaza.  Very visible from Rt. 1, which is the main route in and out of the beaches.  Their website is www.waybackburgers.com.  In it you can check out their menu.  You can even order from your nearest location and once your order is completed you can pick it up.

Jake’s Wayback Burgers first opened in 1991. Here, in Rehoboth Beach, they opened a few days ago. Their hours of operation are 11:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.

Every month they will be featuring their “burger of the month”, as well as the “shake of the month”.

So, for having just opened, we were surprised that there was a line at the register.  We thought we would be the first ones to discover them.

I decided to order one of their signature burgers which was the Big Jake’s Cheeseburger with all the trimmings.  I also added their in house made potato chips.

They asked for our names; our order would be brought to our table.

My burger was big, juicy and perfectly cooked.  I like my burgers medium, but you can request them to be cooked whichever way you want to.  The chips were light, not greasy and so warm.  Very good.

Courtesy of the restaurant, we were brought some of their French fries.  They were crispy and tasty.

Michael had a junior burger which was, actually, a very good size as well.  But, when I tasted his malted milkshake I died.  It really was so good.  Just a taste is all I had.  I wanted some more; no way.  I already knew I would be paying for getting one of their bigger burgers.  I had to order it, in order to write this post.  You know how it is.

The term “wayback” came to mind as in way back when.  The milkshake was served in those old fashioned containers used when I was growing up..  And, it was thick, creamy and cold.

Jake’s Wayback Burgers also has turkey burgers, marinated chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, salads and specialty sandwiches.  The majority of the customers were ordering the burgers, though.

It is great to have more choices at the Beaches.  We welcome them and wish them much success.

Note:  You can find them on Facebook and Twitter as Waybackburgers.

Have a great day!!…Talk to you later….

The Office, Delray Beach, Florida, Restaurant, Review, Palm Beach County

IMG_0694

I am going straight to the point.  I had the best salad at The Office, located at 201 East Atlantic Ave. in Delray Beach.  The telephone?  561-276-3600 and the website is www.theofficedelray.com

I have told you many times that one of the most pleasant ways to eat is “al fresco”, especially on a gorgeous day.  That’s what happened when my husband and I decided to get something for lunch during our stay in Delray in one of the very popular restaurants on trendy Atlantic Ave.

I wanted to see how The Office was doing.  They opened about a year ago and on 1/16/10 I wrote a post on this blog.  You can just click on the month of January 2010 and scroll down to the date.

The Office has a great corner in Delray; visible and plenty of outdoor dining.  Two of their outdoor tables take “dining al fresco” seriously; practically on the street.  I have sat on one of those and have enjoyed it so much.

On this day we sat outside, as well.  As I sat down I noticed that the people on the next table were having a beautiful salad.  So when our waitress came and I asked she said that it was not on the menu; it was a special that day but that people were really liking it.

Of course, I had to have it.  I topped it just like those other people, with steak slices.  My husband ordered it without the steak and just with olive oil and vinegar.  Mine had a  light Balsamic dressing.

Let me describe it to you.  It was a Boston Lettuce.  This lettuce is also known as Tom Thumb, Bibb, Butter, and Buttercrunch and is one of the 6 lettuces generally available for human consumption.  It is a member of the butterhead family; velvety, butterlike texture of the leaves and truly delicious.

The salad also had a goat’s milk feta cheese and it also had very thin slivers of preserved lemons.  The rind of the lemons is preserved for some time; afterwards, all you get is this lemony taste adding texture, color and flavor to the salad. The combination of all those ingredients with the steak just left me wanting more.  I hope they put it on the menu.

IMG_0696

We also ordered their Truffled Deviled Eggs with paprika and chives.  Again, the deviled eggs were just as good as before, if not better.

IMG_0691

We spent a few hours eating, chatting, and people watching.  Nothing out of the ordinary; just a pleasant afternoon with good company in this Village by the Sea.

Talk to you later…..almost getting to the Christmas tree….have a good one!!
