Green Market, Open Air Market, Local Produce, Baked Goods, Entertainment, Delray Beach, Florida

Thank God it did not start raining until mid morning.  I wanted to go by the Green Market.  This is an open air market located at SE 4th Ave., 1/2 block south of Atlantic Avenue.  You cannot miss it.  I had been to the Green Market in the past but had not taken any pictures.

This Green Market is very similar to the Farmers’ Markets that take place during the summer months in the Delaware and Maryland beaches.  It is going back to the basics; buy local and eat fresh.

The Green Market was started in 1996 by the Community Redevelopment Agency.  This is now their 15th season; their second edition of the Greenmarket Cookbook is now on sale.  It is $14.95 plus $3.00 shipping and handling.  Call Lori at 561-276-7511 to reserve your copy.  You may also want to stop by the CRA office on 20 N Swinton Ave. and pick one up.

The Green Market is every Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.  Do you need more info. or are interested in being a vendor?  Then call Lori at 561-276-7511 or e-mail greenmarket@delraycra.org.

It was so nice to stroll up and down the street just checking everything out.

The first vendor I saw was selling seafood.  Immediately the jumbo lump crabmeat got my eye.  Of course, I ended up buying a pound.  Actually, it was cheaper than at home.  This vendor also had gorgeous stonecrab claws.

People were buying; I watched them interact with the vendors.

Between the music playing, the food cooking, the warm weather and a soft breeze, I think I caught myself smiling throughout my strolling.

Hey, you will get the chance to visit the Green Market if you are in Delray Beach every Saturday until the end of May.

Note:  On Friday, 12/24, Christmas Eve, the Green Market will be open from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m., just so their loyal customers can pick up last minute items.  There will be no street closing so all you have to do is pull up and buy your goodies.

Talk to you later…have a good one….

The Bake Shoppe, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Famous Polish Babkas, Split Cream Donuts, Cakes, Pies, Pastries, Review, Delaware Beaches

Once again, Renee hits the nail on the head.  It is so funny because when you hear Renee talk, and had never met her, you think this woman must be huge.  Her appetite for Annie Banannies custard, and her obsession with cup cakes; eaten practically every day would make anyone gain weight just by thinking about it.  Well, she is very thin.  Really, I don’t know where she puts it.  Her target this week is a Split Cream Donut.

She told me I needed to check the Split Cream Donuts at The Bake Shoppe, right on 222 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  The tel. is 302-226-0176.  The owners are John & Joyce Michalek and they have been at this location for 12 years (right across from the Fire Hall).

Rushing I did; had to, thinking that by the time I got there all baked goods would be gone. I could not believe it, they were out of Split Cream Donuts. So, on an on I went about Renee; well, they made one for me just on the spot.  Talking about freshly made.

This is a full fledge baked shop and baked goods are all made fresh, from scratch.  They have donuts, danish, cookies, cakes, beach cookie cut-outs, sticky buns, mini pastries, rustic breads and rolls, bagels, cupcakes and donuts.   The bagels come every day from the Bagel Shop in Milton, up the road, north of Lewes.

Joyce told me that they are well known for their Polish Babkas.  Babka comes from baba, a very tall, delicate yet rich yeast-risen cake from Western Russia and Eastern Poland.  Traditional Babkas have a fruit filling; the more modern ones may be filled with a chocolate or a cheese filling.

Today at the Bake Shoppe the Babkas were made out with a cheese filling and a cherry filling.  As the seasons change so do the fillings change, as well.

Joyce and and John are very friendly and will answer all your questions about their baked goods.  There is coffee available and you can even sit at a table or the bar and enjoy the treats.

I left with my Split Cream Donut and decided to have my own tasting at home.  I can truly tell you that I have not had a donut in years.  I try not to.  They are just too fatenning period.  I am not going there.  But, gosh, I will tell you that I ate this one with great pleasure.  I did take some of the filling out so as not to feel too guilty, though.  It was very light and not dry.  Actually, the filling was light too.  Delicious!!

Thanks Renee.

Talk to you later…you know I will….

Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Delaware Beaches, Tuesdays, Noon until 4:00 p.m.

“Real Food, Real Farmers, Real Community”.  This is the first time, this summer, that I have gone to the Farmers’ Market, here in Rehoboth.  Buy fresh, buy local is their motto; yes, freshly picked or produced within 24 hours of the market.

It was crowded and hot, hot.  The weather is unreal but we were all there.  The Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market is located right behind the Chamber of Commerce, by the roundabout, and behind Grove Park.

Besides seeing some familiar faces I was able to see the representation of some of Rehoboth’s favorite restaurants.

For more information, please check their website, www.rbfarmersmarket.com to see the vendors, calendar, newsletter, recipes, liks, map and contact information.

Remember that this market is on Rain or Shine every Tuesday from 12:00 until 4:00 p.m.

Now check out the market; flowers, vegetables, breads, salsas, etc. etc.
