“Gather the crumbs of happiness, and they will make you a loaf of contentment.”  author unkown

Down the country road I went to pick up 6 dozen cupcakes that I knew were going to make some families happy in Bethany Beach, Delaware.  They were going to be served after a half day of deepsea fishing off Indian River Inlet.

I had them baked gluten free. There were a few in the group that had to adhere to a gluten free diet.  The others would be joining them, as well.  Cupcakes are so easy to take to picnics…It was the perfect choice.

Creative Crumbs Bakes Shoppe is owned by Karen and Patty.  They are sisters and they are the bakers!!  For many years these sisters had a very successful bakery in Lewes.  Then, children and other responsibilites made them close it.  A year ago they decided that it was time to start baking again.

I was talking to a friend of mine from Lewes, and I mentioned I was trying Creative Crumbs….when I told her who owned it, she said “OMG, Karen used to bring amazing desserts for Monday night football”.  Word of mouth…love it.

Creative Crumbs Bake Shoppe does not have a retail store.  Everything is baked to order.  You may contact them at 302-645-8588.  You can also visit http://www.creativecrumbs.net.  They are active on Facebook, as well.

These sister bakers offer traditional baking; so unique is the fact that they also offer baking for customers with dietary allergies and sensitivities.  Gluten Free (Karen is celiac), Allergen Free, Dairy Free…and also Vegan.

Please note that if you have food allergies, and have questions about their ingredients, make sure you contact them.  All of their products do not contain the same ingredients, but they are manufactured in the same facility.  In their bakery, they process tree nuts, peanuts, soy, wheat, milk and eggs.  They do their best to clean and sterilize the bakery before and after each use….have in mind that Creative Crumbs Bake Shoppe is not an allergy-free facility.

The safety and cleanliness of the bakery is regulated by the Delaware Division of Public Health and in compliance with FDA.

Here are the cupcakes!!

On the picnic table, they quickly were sought after.  And there were even enough for dessert after the pig roast.

Having cooked gluten free in my household for many years, I think I am a good judge…..the cupcakes had perfect density.  The flavors of chocolate, vanilla and lemon were completedly distinct.  The frosting was creamy and not overly sweet.  And the shells made the Little Pink Houses of Hope…..smile!

Thank you Karen and Patty!!

NOTE:  Creative Crumbs Bake Shoppe is participating at VegFest next week-end in Rehoboth Beach.

Destination? Shorebreak Lodge, Restaurant, Bar, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Review, It’s Restaurant Week in Downtown Rehoboth Beach!! Shorebreak Lodge is 133 Steps to the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn9972

There are 27 participating restaurants in one square mile in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  That’s pretty impressive!!  This is the perfect week to try restaurants in Downtown Rehoboth that you had not even thought about trying before for whatever reasons.  There are great deals going on….and, you still have time because this event is ongoing through Friday, June 6th.

dscn9970

I have to give a shout to Rehoboth Beach Main Street, the sponsor of this very popular event.  I was so thrilled to find out that I had won a $25 gift certificate to be used during the week.  It came just in time because I used it on Tuesday, June 5th.  Rehoboth Beach Main Street draws attention to the downtown district.  It is the heart of Downtown Rehoboth Beach, bringing to this charming seaside community so many events for the entire family.  For more info., please visit http://www.downtownrehoboth.com.

It is going to be 5 years in July since I started this blog.  I have lived at the Delaware Beaches for so many years, that I do consider myself a “local”.  A blog is a “diary” of sorts.  The writer puts out his or hers experiences.  I do love promoting the Delaware Beaches.  So, I have been doing just that; reviewing restaurants, finding the best corn, the farmers’ markets, activities, and events, and the usual bla, bla, bla….

One evening, a month or so ago, I was on Wilmington Avenue when the lights and front of a restaurant caught my attention.  I am sorry to say that I had not heard about it, but, I kept it on the back of my mind, after reading the menu. It would be an interesting one to try.  Guess what?  They have been in Downtown Rehoboth Beach for 3 years!!  What kind of a local am I?

photo (15)

Shorebreak Lodge was the destination of one of my usual suspects, Debbie, and I, on Tuesday.  We had not read any reviews…we were going with no preconceived ideas.  How perfect was that?

photo (16)

Shorebreak Lodge is located just 133 steps to the Atlantic Ocean, on 10 Wilmington Avenue.  Tel. 302-227-1007.  Website?  http://www.shorebreaklodge.com.  Of course, I forgot my camera which was unusual, the iphone would do, I hoped.

Even before I tasted any of the food, I liked Shorebreak.  We live at the beach, it is a laid back casual atmosphere; the one visitors come to experience.  I was drawn to Shorebreak, then, when I tasted the food…I decided I could not wait to go back again.

photo (1)

It is called Shorebreak Lodge because the owners are surfers…Montauk, NY, a favorite spot.  The location is practically on the beach….shorebreakers are found at the water’s edge.

Debbie and I decided to sit at sidewalk….with the big windows next to us.

photo (2)photo (10)

Infused water, iced tea and a little atmosphere to start our evening.  The service was attentive and not obtrusive.

Shorebreak Lodge can sit up to 70 customers.  The menu changes constantly, bringing customers the fresh ingredients of the day.  The food is not complicated….food allergy concerns?  Please let them know.

The Roast Beets, Bucheron and Lentils….I love beets and so does Debbie.  The combination of colors and flavors enhanced our tastebuds.

photo (4)

At times, and depending how they are cooked, octopus can be a little tough, but not on Tuesday.  My Grilled Octopus “Romesco” was very flavorful and tender.

photo (6)

The Hake (Cape Cod), en papillote, with bacon chutney, carrot n’ fennel was presented beautifully and tasted just as good as it looked.

photo (8)

photo (9)

And the Surf n’ Turf of braised short ribs and sea scallops….I loved.  Risotto accompanied the short ribs, which by the way melted in your mouth.  Always a fan of scallops, these were cooked and seasoned to perfection.

photo (11)

Our selections for sweet endings were:

The strawberry puff pastry shortcake.  Strawberries are in season, so we had to.

photo (12)

The Avocado and Coconut Milk “Creme Brulee”….first time seen it on a menu, so, we had to….and by the way, it was awesome.  It was so good to be able to distinct the avocado and coconut flavors.

photo (13)

Very pleasantly surprised….so now you know…let me know how your experience is.  Check it out when visiting the Nation’s Summer Capital.

Destination? Lewes Canalfront Park, Historic Lewes, Delaware, Events, Cinema and Concerts by The Canal, Fitness, Yoga, Zumba, The 3rd Annual Picnic in The Park, At Canalfront Park, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn9934

It was my first time at the 3rd Annual Picnic in The Park at Canalfront Park, in Lewes, Delaware.  One of my usual suspects, Cindi, came with me.  My first thought was Small Town U.S.A.  To see everyone sitting around, chatting, smiling and enjoying one beautiful day by the water in the First Town of the First State.  This photo says it all.

dscn9915

Picnic in The Park was held on Sunday, June 1st, from Noon until 3 p.m. at Canalfront Park on Front Street in Lewes.  The admission, if purchased online, was $10, otherwise, $15 at the door.  Kids 12 and under were $5.  Food and beverage tickets were $2 each at the event.  I bought $20 for Cindi and I.

dscn3185

dscn9911

Lewes restaurants were under their tents offering visitors their best and most well known delicacies:  Agave, Buttery, Gilligan’s, Half Full, Irish Eyes, Jerry’s, Kindle, Nectar, Rose and Crown, Savannah Deli and Grille, Striper Bites, Touch of Italy, and 2 Dips. These restaurants gathered around the park and from beef tenderloin chili and fresh cornbread to lobster salad sandwiches….all you had to do is give them 1 or 2 tickets, depending on the food and let the tastings begin.

Plenty of tables to sit, eat, and listen to the music.

The Cow Milking Contest….that, I had not seen before, but was so funny.  It had a lot of interest.

dscn9921

Cindi and I loved the Cotton Candy.  It was just made…so light and airy and complimentary.  As a young child I had a cotton candy machine; a small version of the one at the park.  Colorful sugar made beautiful cotton candy.

I love the photo of the 2 Cotton Candy Girls….right by Lightship Overfalls, they were experts at the Cotton Candy machine….and so typical.

Destination? Junction & Breakwater Trail, Rehoboth Beach, Glades, Saltwater Marshes, Pine Forests, Coastal Wetlands, Hiking, Biking, Walking, Strolling, The Other Side of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

dscn9856

It would be a toss up….beach, or, hiking, biking, walking…I think all can be done in one day if you are visiting Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  Look outside…it is another gorgeous day in the Nation’s Summer Capital.

dscn9808

The Junction & Breakwater Trail is a trail that follows the path of an early railroad.  At the time it carried passengers and freight.  The name comes from the rail line that ran between Lewes and Rehoboth in the mid 1800s.

In 2003 the Division of Parks and Recreation of the State of Delaware used the old railbed to create a beautiful hiking, biking, walking and strolling trail for the public.

dscn9806

I call it the other side of Rehoboth Beach because it is an unexpected scenery….glades, salt marshes, pine forests and coastal wetlands lead all the way to and from the ocean to Lewes.

dscn9805

dscn9803

In 2003, when it opened it was a 3.6 mile crushed stone trail.  In 2007 an additional 2.4 mile corridor was officially opened.  The trail is a total of 6 miles.

dscn9810

There are different ways of accessing the trail.  If you are at the Tanger Outlets, you can park at the Seaside Parking Lot and start there.  If you are in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, you can head out of town over the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal drawbridge and take a right onto Church Street.  Turn left past the church and follow the road that passes the entrance of Canal Corkran.

At the Lewes end, the trail begins at Gills Neck Rd. and Kings Highway intersection opposite the entrance of Cape Henlopen High School.  For more detailed info., please visit http://www.leweschamber.com/trails/junction-breakwater-biking-and-hiking-trail.

Scenic vistas and marshes are those where you should stop and enjoy….this whole area has grown so much.  Traffic is crazy, more so, at this time of the year.  This trail offers respite from all the hustle and bustle even at the beach.  The railroad bridge is 80 foot long and was originally built in 1913.

dscn9804

Guess what we saw while walking….harmless!

dscn9809

The trail is quiet and quite tranquil.  I think you will love it!!  Talk to you later.
