Up and down the coastal towns of Delmarva, residents and merchants are making sure that the historic towns they have chosen to live, work and play are preserved with respect and dignity. Historic Berlin, Maryland is one of such towns just a few miles west of Ocean City, Maryland, in Worcester County. Every time I visit Berlin, it brings back memories of many years driving my kids to and from Berlin, when they went to school. The Globe was a place I probably stopped more than a few times a week. So, when Cindi and I decided a few weeks ago to stop by…lunch at The Globe was a must. We were the first ones there. Perfect for those photo opportunities.
The Globe is located at 12 Broad St., Berlin, MD 21811. Tel. 410-641-0784. Website? http://www.globetheater.com. The Proprietor & General Manager is Jennifer Dawicki.
We were able to walk around at our own pace since we were early. The first thing you will notice is their Coppertop Bar. Plenty of stools available with happy hour from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.
Upstairs, in the Balcony Art Gallery & Lounge, as well as throughout the Globe you will see works of local and regional artists on display. On Thursday, May 9th….a Murder Mystery Dinner will be taking place at the Balcony Art Gallery & Lounge. Once a month this event attracts many customers for a night of dining and mystery. Please call for tickets. 410-641-0784. $25/person. 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
On the first floor, there are different areas for dining. The Globe was a theater, so you might end up eating on a balcony.
By the Coppertop Bar.
Or, across from the stage, which is where Cindi and I decided to sit.
The Globe is open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner and Sunday Brunch. It has Wi-Fi, offers a kids’ menu and it is also handicapped accessible.
It is funny how I love going out to lunch and dinner with friends…and then I start wondering what can I eat that is low fat, low carb, low sodium…crazy, isn’t it? Why bother?
Cindi and I decided to be very good and this is what we had:
Black Bean Burger Wrap, made in-house, tucked away with spinach, avocado and an order of their most delicious fresh fried tortilla chips and a pickle.
Mine was the Jerk Chicken Wrap….grilled jerk chicken, spinach, pineapple, red onion, mozzarella cheese, and honey mustard dressing. It was also served with their tortillas and a pickle. That’s all we ate!! I think we did well.
To see what else is on the menu, please visit http://www.globetheater.com/menu. And, to check the specials, please visit http://www.globetheater.com/specials.
So, what’s going on at The Globe besides the Murder Mystery Dinner?
Friday, 5/10, is the monthly 2nd Friday Art Stroll throughout Historic Berlin from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Saturday, 5/11, Hot Butter Nuggets on Stage at 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.
Sunday, 5/12, Happy Mother’s Day!! Brunch with $2 George’s Bloody Mary’s and Mimosas. Reservations are recommended!!
Have a Good One!!

El sabor de la comida latina no tiene limites. Las combinaciones de especies e ingredientes…el aji, ya sea dulce o picante, hace una fiesta por si sola en el paladar. Oh wait a minute, I am supposed to be writing in English. I guess I got caught up in the moment.
Papa Grande’s is the new sister restaurant brought to Southern Delaware by Matt Haley, Owner/Executive Chef of SoDel Concepts Restaurant Group. It is scheduled to open before Memorial Day. This marks the first Latin inspired concept within the group’s brand profile and the 7th restaurant in total.
“Papa Grande’s brought a cultural swing to our family of restaurants. It offers the same clean design style, authentic food and excellent experience that we have become known for with our customers,” stated Matt Haley, Owner/Executive Chef.
Inspired by the spirit and flavors of the Hispanic culture, Papa Grande’s Coastal Taqueria provides an authentic version of Latino cooking and cuisine. The menu offerings will be 80 percent hardcore authentic coastal taqueria with main dishes like Whole Fish Veracruz or Chicken Mole served with rice, beans and zucchini, ranging in price from $14 – $21 per entree. The remaining 20 percent of the menu offerings is fun, with Scrapple Apple, Belly clams or SPAM tacos. The generous taco menu selection has 15 – 18 options and the Starters range from Jicama sticks to roasted pardon peppers and Chorizo empanadas. Papa Grande’s Coastal Taqueria menu will be consistent with the rest of the SoDel Concepts’ restaurants by offering affordable and locally grown plates and tastes. To take a peek at the menu, please visit http://www. papagrandes.com/menu.
On the bar side, Papa Grande’s will be topping off the Latin cuisine with an expansive, authentic Tequila selection complimented by Tequila and Rum tasting menus. To sweeten the pot even further, the bar features a fresh sucar cane machine offering a little crushed-to-order food theater experience for guests. Check the website http://www.papagrandes.com.
Trapiche for sugar cane.
For back-of-the-house news at Papa Grande’s Coastal Taqueria, Matt Haley brought SoDel Concepts’ Corporate Chef, Doug Ruley, in as a partner on this venture. The two worked with renowned chefs at the Texas branch of the Culinary Institute of America to create a menu reflective of the traditions and home-style roots of the Latin American people.
In partnership with the Global Delaware Fund, http://www.globaldelawarefund.com, SoDel Concepts has pledged that a percentage of all profits from Papa Grandes will be donated to a scholarship program that will benefit underpriviledged Hispanic children.
Papa Grande’s Coastal Taqueria is located at 38929 Madison Avenue in Fenwick Island, Delaware by the Route 54 bridge, across the parking lot from Catch 54, one of its sister restaurants. It was reconstructed out of an antique barn that sat on the site, using reclaimed wood and glass from the former structure. There are 2 stories, with wrap around decks and unique, functional, glass garage doors that open up to offer guests the complete outdoor dining experience. Boats are welcome, just pull up to the dock, tie up and pop in. More info? Papa Grande’s does have catering and private dining, as well. Call 302-436-7272.
Buen provecho!!

Under new ownership, Dewey Beach’s longtime highway hotel, the Sand Palace, has been reinvented, and undergone a massive renovation, to produce the Beach House Dewey, set to open May 17th. Congratulations!!
The 47-room property was acquired in 2012 by The Bernstein Companies, one of Washington, D.C.’s oldest real estate development, investment, and hotel management organizations. One of the owners of the company takes special interest in the Delaware Coast, as he and his family have owned a home in downtown Rehoboth Beach for 13 years. The Bernstein Companies portfolio of hotels include Marriott properties in D.C. and Maryland, as well as several new developments including a new Westin Hotel in downtown Bethesda, Maryland.
“We’re excited to reinvent what affordable accommodations on the beach can look and feel like,” explains Davin Driskill, Vice President of the Bernstein Hotel Division. “We’ve tried to pick a smart, clean, modern design that still fits the Dewey feel and lifestyle. We think that we’ve created something pretty unique…It’s unlike any other property in Dewey.”
Located on Highway One across from the Bottle and Cork, the Beach House Dewey features brand-new accommodations steps from the beach, including plush bedding, in-room refrigerators, microwaves, flat-screen HD televisions and wireless internet. The property will also have an expansive suite, touting specialty furnishings, a detached, spacious sitting room, with views of both, the bay and the ocean! The Beach House management team has plans to use the property’s revamped pool and patio area to feature a variety of beach games and popular activities.
Mike Fitzmaurice, General Manager for the Beach House Dewey hotel, has been in the Dewey hospitality industry for 23 years. “I love Dewey Beach,” he states. “The place is a lot slower, and the people are very pleasant and content – it’s the best of both worlds.” Fitzmaurice describes the hotel’s transformation as “Baby-smacking new…Everything has been stripped down to the concrete of the building. It’s been set up to be more efficient, allowing us to keep it extremely clean…we’ll be the premiere location for Dewey Beach with the most top-notch rooms, no contest.”
The Dewey Beach House is now accepting reservations for the 2013 season, beginning the night of Thursday, May 23rd. For additional information, please visit http://www.beachhousedewey.com.

Good Morning. It is a beautiful day in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
Start the Day….
GreenMan Juice Bar & Bistro is located on 12 Wilmington Avenue. One street south of Rehoboth Avenue. Great breakfast place!!
There is always a Quiche of the Day. It is always so good. You can order whole quiches from them.
Lately, I have been ordering the GreenMan Tofu Scramble. When I mentioned it could be boring….he said. Where else would you find it? I answered, Boulder, Colorado.
Then there is a simple egg sramble with a healthy GreenMan Special Squeezer….kale, pears and the perfect juice to start the day.
Walk the Boardwalk…kick back, you are at the Beach!

Don’t miss the opportunity because Mod Cottage is full of gifts and home accessories for every corner of your home.
Mod Cottage is located at 247 Rehoboth Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach. Tel. 302-227-7277. Website? http://www.modcottage.net.
Brad Holsinger and Ed Moore are the proprietors of Mod Cottage. This is a must stop shop in Rehoboth Beach. Today, Brad gave Jody and I a warm welcome. He was getting ready for the celebration on Saturday.
You have to spend time at the store because every corner has something…pillows, napkins, shower curtains, gifts for every occasion… you name it.
At first when I saw these, I thought they were wine bottles. They were, actually, umbrellas. Their case is hard and waterproof. Perfect for those rainy days we have been having…just close the umbrella and stick in the case.
Mary F. Costa is a native of California, but Rehoboth is lucky to have her as a resident. Her passion is woodworking and I thought these were so pretty!!
Products from Lollia…they have appeared in Oprah’s magazine.
A corner for children. Really cute!!
The jewelry was very reasonably priced.
I have plenty of friends celebrating birthdays, others have children getting married, and for others, is graduation….I hope they are checking this post!!
Candles and Scents!!
Now that you have taken a peek at what Mod Cottage has to offer, all you have to do is join them in the celebration!! Have a great week-end.
