Every time I am driving from Baltimore to Rehoboth Beach, I take a look at this Dock Bar from Rt. 50 and I say….I want to stop there. For one reason or another I never do. The weather might be too hot, too cold…oh no; it’s raining. You know how it is. But, today, on such a gorgeous day, with a deep blue sky, low humidity and comfortable temperatures, my friend, Trish, and I were stopping.
The Big Owl Tiki Bar is located at 3015 Kent Narrows Way South in Grasonville, Maryland. Traveling on Rt. 50/301, the Exit is 42. Tel. 410-827-6523. Website? http://www.thebigowl.com. The Big Owl Tiki Bar is also on Facebook.
It was late in the afternoon. We had just finished one awesome day walking and touring in Annapolis, Maryland. All we wanted was to sit and enjoy the view and the Tiki Bar.
The Big Owl Tiki Bar is bright in color and it looks like so much fun. We proceeded to sit right by the water. The view is amazing; boats passing by after a day on the bay.
Jennifer was our server but she is also part of the family that owns The Big Owl Tiki Bar. We ordered something to drink and also some steamed mussels.
The Big Owl Tiki Bar opens 7 days a week. There is also entertainment Thursday through Sunday. Jennifer mentioned that her father is a professional DJ. He is there, practically, every day. On Fridays he takes over as DJ and opens a Sunset Party…using the Conch Shell as a horn as the sun sets….shots for everyone. The music will get going.
The Tiki Bar is very tropical with a Key West ambiance.
Our mussels arrived and they were in a well seasoned broth with plenty of garlic and bread to make sure that not a drop was left on the bowl.
The Bar will remain open until mid-November. They will keep their kitchen open year-round for breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. starting in October. You can order right from the Big Owl Grill and sit under the tent on the water. During the colder months they will put the sides on and add a heater.
You now know where it is located, the tel. number, the website and even the Facebook page. Check them out….it is lots of fun, and they have a good menu. We had had enough but would like to come back and try that deep fried key lime pie…it’s their own original recipe.
Have a good one!! Talk to you later.

Do you remember when it used to be called The Wellness Community Delaware? Well, that name has been changed and it is now called Cancer Support Community Delaware. The Mission? That has stayed the same; to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. Cancer Support Community Delaware is the only organization in Delaware dedicated exclusively to helping people cope with and manage the emotional aspect of cancer. They also focus on the cancer participants’ family and/or caregivers, including children and teenagers.
Cancer Support Community Delaware’ s programs are professionally led and provide emotional support, education and hope. All programs are free of charge. Funds raised in Sussex County stay here, in Sussex County, to help our neighbors.
There is a Countdown to the 2nd Annual Wings of Hope – A Butterfly Release, to benefit the Cancer Support Community Delaware. It is going to be on Saturday, 9/15. Rain date is Sunday, 9/16. The event will be held at the Medical Arts Building, 18947 John J. Williams Highway (Rt. 24) in Rehoboth Beach, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Admission is free and everyone is invited and welcomed. The event will include activities, entertainment, vendors, and refreshments.
Seeded butterfly cutouts ($10) will be available for purchase as well as the opportunity to release your own live butterfly ($25 – only 50 available, advance purchase suggested). The event culminates in a butterfly garden created by Sposato Landscape with the release of 250 live Monarch butterflies. For more info., please visit http://www.cancersupportdelaware.org/wingsofhope.
The 2nd Annual Wings of Hope is sponsored by WBOC-TV, Delmarva Broadcasting – Cool 101.3 and Eagle 97.7, Cape Gazette, Tunnell Cancer Center, Jack Lingo Realtor and Grotto Pizza.
Paula Sangaleer from Eagle in the Morning and Norman Short from In Touch with Delmarva, both on Eagle 97.7, and Angelica Spanos from WBOC-TV will be joining this community-wide celebration of life.
I don’t think there is anyone that has not been touched by cancer. Having friends going through treatments at this moment, makes this kind of fundraising event more personal.
Talk to you later.

We do celebrate the end of the parking meters in our Delaware Beaches. Well, 10 minutes for a quarter is a bit much. I think our residents and visitors did enjoy using the new Parking App. No need to carry all those quarters. It was very convenient for those with a smart phone.
But what am I complaining about? I was in Baltimore, Maryland a couple of weeks ago. I parked in a garage right downtown. I only used it for 38 minutes. As I handed out my ticket to the parking cashier, he said “none”. I said; wow thanks!! He kept saying “none”. In reality he was saying “nine”. I just could not understand him. I laughed sooo hard. Can you believe it? $9 for 38 minutes. Now I don’t feel so bad about our beaches charging a quarter for 10 minutes.
Pretty soon you will be able to park with no worries. Stay as long as you want in most places. The schedule is as follows:
Bethany Beach – Parking meters are in effect through Saturday, 9/15.
Rehoboth Beach – Parking meters are in effect through Sunday, 9/16.
Dewey Beach – Parking meters are in effect through Sunday, 9/15.
Fenwick Island – Parking meters are in effect through Sunday, 9/15.
Lewes – Parking meters are in effect through Sunday, 10/14 in the Historic District. This includes the 1812 Lot.
Lewes Beach – Parking meters are in effect through Sunday, 9/30.
Please note that the Delaware State Parks entry fees are in effect until Friday, 11/30. Fees are as follows:
Ocean Parks:
$4 for in-state registered vehicles or $8 for out of state registered vehicles.
Inland Parks:
$3 for in-state registered vehicles or $6 for out of state registered vehicles.
The Second Season at the Delaware Beaches is the best!!

I cannot believe that it has already been 6 months since I last visited New York with my cousins. New York did look so good.
Some things never change…street food…the horse drawn carriages, its people. Everyone rushing from one place to another. Not us, we were on vacation time.
Towards the end of our stay we decided that we better go down to the 9/11 Memorial and see if, by chance, we could get in. That was not to be. The line wrapped around to get the tickets that were going to be available for the day.
We could get into the 9/11 Memorial Preview Site, though.
At the time this site was an exhibit. Plenty to see. The flag made out of all the names of the victims of 9/11. You could also see pieces of what would eventually go into the Memorial.
Across this preview site and also across from where the Twin Towers stood is a magnificent historic church.
Courtesy of Leo Sore/Trinity Wall Street
It is called St. Paul’s Chapel. The address is: 211 Broadway, between Fulton St. & Vesey St. In March they were doing some renovations; plenty of people were going inside.
St. Paul’s Chapel opened its doors in 1766. Trinity Church was founded in 1697. It is an Episcopal parish and home to St. Paul’s Chapel. St. Paul’s Chapel is also Manhattan’s oldest public building. George Washington worshiped at this chapel after his inauguration.
It is known as “The Little Chapel that Stood” because nothing happened to this chapel; most buildings around it were damaged when the Twin Towers came down. Plenty of debris all around its surroundings, though. It also survived the Great Fire of 1776.
St. Paul’s Chapel had a purpose on 9/11. It opened its doors to all 9/11 recovery workers. It was a place to get round-the-clock care, food, shelter, counseling and worship.
St. Paul’s Chapel became a place of peace, rest and reconciliation.
We went inside to see the Exhibit “Unwavering Spirit”. Everyone visiting was quiet. It was total peace. All of us were deep in thought.
Many of the exhibit pieces were left by recovery workers, police, and doctors.
Visitors too could leave something behind.
St. Paul’s Chapel is very active. To know more about it, please visit http://www.saintpaulschapel.org.
If you would like to see a 9/11 Timeline, please visit http://www.trinitywallstreet.org/news/features/911-timeline.
If you get the chance, please do visit. Then, go out back where the cemetery is located. You will be overcome with deep feelings. It is that kind of place; a sanctuary.
Never forget, right? Talk to you later.
Note: Information for this post was taken from the St. Paul’s Chapel website and a few other internet sites.

Crystal has been in Rehoboth for so many years. During the season it also opens for dinner. Usually, my group of usual suspects go there for breakfast. We celebrate anything…birthdays, moving away, you name it…it’s great. All kinds of breakfast items. They do offer lunch; try the burger next time.
Crystal is located at 620 Rehoboth Avenue. Tel. 302-227-1088. During the summer months, you can expect to wait; they open every day. There is a full bar. Today, on a gorgeous September day, my son and I decided to stop by. It was so funny to see the locals, and natives already enjoying the Second Season in Rehoboth Beach.
My son orders the Crab Imperial Eggs Benedict every time. Today was no different. OMG…look at the picture. It had so much crab; smothered in Hollandaise sauce. A sprinkle of Old Bay, that’s all you need, and you are good to go. The home fries are pretty good too. The Crab Egg Benedict is always consistent, served with that much crabmeat.
I really wanted to have Chipped Beef on Toast. This dish, just like all the dishes at Crystal, is big. Our server told me that it was, particularly, good today. No, I can’t do that. So, instead I decided to have this tiny yogurt, granola, nuts, blueberries and even honey. But, wait a minute….I am not finished. I also had a side order of Scrapple, extra crispy. What a combination!! I confess, I ate it all. Now, I feel better. No more guilt!!
I hope my Scrapple friends, Missy and Jim see the Scrapple. It was perfectly cooked.
Talk to you later….you know I will.
Note: What was I thinking? I could have had that chipped beef!!

The dark meat has always been more economical. Dark meat aficionados will tell you that it is low in carbs, moist, and, definitely, more flavorful. The only thing is that if you do not like dark meat, then skip this post. Because this post only uses leg quarters.
I will be the first one to tell you, that my preference is the white meat. Crispy fried chicken? I’ll eat either one. Barbecued? Yes, probably, the same. You can get these leg quarters nice and brown in the oven; the combination of the stuffing and the meat will win you over.
The leg quarters are stuffed with grated zucchini, grated Swiss cheese, your own spices, homemade breadcrumbs….and I am not kidding, they are good enough to serve at a party. Oh, and so easy make too. Assemble ahead of time, place in the oven. Enjoy your company and serve.
So, if you are looking for a tasteful and delicious dish, then, read on.
Zucchini Stuffed Chicken Leg Quarters
4 large chicken quarters (there were 5 in my package)
2 cups grated zucchini (1 or 2, depending on the size)
2 cups grated Swiss Cheese (grate your own)
2 eggs
salt (use your own judgement)
Pepper (same as salt)
1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder (optional)
1 tablespoon butter, melted
Paprika
1 1/2 to 2 cups of homemade breadcrumbs. Note: To make this recipe gluten free you need to use gluten free bread. I toasted the bread and crumbled it. Depending on the size of your bread, you might have to use 3 slices. If you do not have a gluten allergy or intolerance, you may use commercially prepared stuffing.
I really don’t like to touch raw chicken with my hands, but you really need to get your fingers on this chicken. Separate the skin, gently. You want to create a pocket so the stuffing stays in place. Get your fingers in there and work it. Set them on a lightly greased baking sheet.
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
In a bowl mix the rest of the ingredients; the zucchini, the grated cheese, etc. etc.
Slowly, and in small amounts start stuffing the leg quarters. You want them full, but you also want the skin to cover all the stuffing.
Do you mind the skin? It turns a beautiful color and I don’t think there would be any other way to stuff them.
Once they have been assembled, melt one tablespoon of butter and brush the top of the quarters. Then, sprinkle a little paprika on top for added color and taste.
Place in the middle of the oven and bake for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. If you want them to brown even more after cooking, just turn the broil on and give it a couple of minutes; just a couple, though.
Take them out…add your sides…and enjoy!
My sides: asparagus, new potatoes, and…..canned cranberry sauce!!
Note: This recipe doubles easily. It is one of those that you can start adding different ingredients to the stuffing, making it your own!!

It will be from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Plunging will begin at 1 p.m. Location? Grenoble Place and the Beach. There will be games, food, face painting and a lot of fun.
Even though I started this post saying that it is usually more subdued in Rehoboth Beach after a holiday week-end, well, I just came from having dinner in Rehoboth and almost could not get a parking space….popular place.
I went to Confucius, which is located at 57 Wilmington Ave., in Downtown Rehoboth Beach. Danielle and Shawn, the owners, were there, as usual. Great couple; they make you feel very comfortable. This is one of those restaurants that is very aware of customers with food allergies. Will go out of their way, and will substitute or make you something special. They are open year-round and it is a favorite with Rehoboth Beach residents. Website? http://www.confuciusrehobothbeach.com.
I had tonight a dish that I have had several times. Always delicious…The whole black seabass, fried till crispy, topped with honey vinegar sauce…a bit spicy too.
Have a great week-end…relax, you are at the Beach!!
Note: AboutMyBeaches can also be found on Facebook and Twitter…just in case you want to “Like” it.
