In the Dominican Republic they are called Mamoncillos, But, in Puerto Rico they are called Quenepas

IMG_5262

It is a typical summer day in Florida; rain and more rain.  But guess what?  I went to Publix, the local supermarket.  Strolling around the different isles, thinking how nice the snow birds are gone.  I don’t consider myself a snowbird.  I come to Delray a few days here or there, at the most 10 days at a time.

Something caught my attention at the produce stand; green bunches.  I wondered if they were quenepas.  I have not had that fruit in probably 30 plus years.  It said they were mamoncillos from the Dominican Republic.  I had forgotten that was one of the other names given to this tropical fruit.  I took some and had to open one right then and there.  I was not mistaken; the taste of this fruit brought me back to my years growing up in the Island of Puerto Rico.  The street vendors used to sell them in paper bags.  Fear had been instilled in all of us children because the fruit is, actually, very slippery.  Definitely not for unsupervised kids.

Quenepas are also called Spanish limes.  They might look like a small lime but that’s where the similarities stop.  It is a tropical fruit of South and Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean and some parts of Africa and the Pacific.

IMG_5263

Quenepas grow in bunches.  Summer is their season.  In Puerto Rico, the quenepas are from the town of Ponce.  I think my cousins, who lived in Ponce had a tree in their backyard.  Maybe if they read this post they will confirm it.

In describing the fruit, I think the best I can come up with is, that it is a cross between a lychee and a lime; maybe.  It has a good layer of skin.  The way to eat it?  Just crack it with your teeth then put it in your mouth and suck around the large seed.  Sorry, but that’s how you do it.

IMG_5265

The pulp can be tart, tangy and usually, so deliciously sweet.

Quenepas stain.  It is a brown, ugly stain, so watch it.

Another interesting fact about quenepas is that they are used to make Bili, which is a drink that ferments rum, preferably pitorro (Puerto Rican moonshine).  Bili is indigenous to the islands of Vieques and Culebra.  Both of these islands are located between Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Back on April 13, 2010 I wrote a post about this drink and a few others.  If you would like to see it, just click on the month of April, 2010 and scroll down to the 13th.

Still enjoying the quenepas as I write this post….waiting from my brother, Miguel….we will see if he is surprised, or not….or does not care at all….talk to you later….have a good one!!

Update:  Miguel just arrived bearing from his yard the most amazing mangoes, which are the next best thing to quenepas.  He screamed when he saw the quenepas; many years have passed since he had seen them, as well.

Palm Beach Grill, Palm Beach, Restaurant, Review, Palm Beach County, Florida, The Second Season

IMG_5286

South Ocean Blvd. is the road I took to Palm Beach this evening from Delray Beach.  Also known as A1A.  Driving north on this road is a total treat, especially at this time of the year, when you have it all to yourself to enjoy.  At some point during the drive trees appear like a canopy over the road; that ocean view was amazing; the water was calm and blue.  A passing car here or there, a byciclist or two.

It can get mighty crowded in Palm Beach County during the height of the season.  But, tonight is was priceless.  The landscaping was to die for; it always is so perfect.

I was meeting a friend for dinner.  Our choice of restaurant for this evening was the Palm Beach Grill.  It is located at 340 Royal Poinciana Way, #336, Palm Beach, FL 33480.  Tel. 561-835-1077.  Website? www.hillstone.com/#/restaurants/palmbeachgrill.

Palm Beach Grill is part of the family of restaurants called Hillstone, based in Los Angeles and in business since 1976.  Hillstone has 12 restaurants throughout the country, all unique and different from each other.  Their website is www.hillstone.com.

We met at the bar, which by the way, was comfortably crowded.  Patrons were also eating at the bar.  You can find a little bit for everyone on the menu.  You can access the menu on the above mentioned website.  Palm Beach Grill is also sensitive to people with food allergies, so please notify your waiter or waitress.

I liked the decor.  It was simple with a slight edge to it; at the same time a sophistication in an understated way.  Soon our table was ready.  It was an open booth; very comfortable.

Then, we met Amy.  She was going to take care of us.  Always great to see a smile on someone’s face; friendly chat and knowledge of the menu.  Having worked in the restaurant for years, she knew it well.  We took all her suggestions.

A special appetizer this evening was the steak tartare.  We saw someone at the bar with it.  We decided to order it and Amy thought it was a good choice.

IMG_5269

It came with toast points which were beautifully arranged.  We told Amy that we loved it and the Chef should consider putting it on the menu as a permanent feature.  It was that good.  Steak tartare was first served in French restaurants in the early part of the 20th century.

My friend ordered for his main entree the Pan Fried Yellow Tail Snapper with the Chef’s dressing, thick sliced tomato and cole slaw.  He was thoroughly impressed on how good it was.  I took a bite of the cole slaw.  Fantastic.  We asked Amy and she said the cole slaw is made to order; green onions, sour cream; so fresh with just the right amount of dressing.

IMG_5272

My choice was the branzino.  This is the European seabass.  It is a silver-skinned fish.  Sometimes also called Mediterranean seabass, bronzini or branzini. Branzino is the name given in Northern Italy.  It came with sauteed spinach.  Very well seasoned and very much enjoyed, as well.

IMG_5275

We also ordered hand cut French fries.  Could not help it.  Very thin, served with two sauces.  Nice and crispy, just like I like them.

IMG_5273

I know we had enough food already, but Amy suggested we try the Hot Fudge Sunday with Sloan’s Ice Cream.  She though it was the smallest of the desserts.  Are you kidding?  It was a good size sundae, which I ended eating, practically all by myself. I felt guilty, but I consoled myself with the fact that I have not had a sundae in such a long time.

IMG_5277

Palm Beach Grill has an open kitchen.  A pretty big one too.  It was so busy, but graciously they told me I could take pictures.

IMG_5279

IMG_5280

Then, the grilled artichokes captured my attention.  They were gorgeous.  Amy had told us that they were delicious.  It was between the tartare or the artichokes.  Next time; they are a fixture on the menu.

IMG_5281

Palm Beach Grill is open 7 days a week.  Reservations are strongly recommended.  We came in with no reservations but we would not have been so lucky at the height of the season.

I really enjoyed it so much.  The unexpected dinner with a good friend; it is always what I look forward to.

Talk to you later….I found quenepas at Publix…I will tell you later…

Blueberry Crisp, Blueberries, Recipe, Easy, July is National Blueberry Month

I found him in the neighborhood.

I found him in the neighborhood.

“Let’s go blueberry picking”…I can still hear myself telling that to a good friend, Deveraux.  At other times, it was to Shelley or Nancy.  All summer long we would go, at least once a week, to Ryan’s Blueberry Farm located at, where else but at Blueberry Lane in Gumboro, Delaware.  This was west of Bethany Beach, crossing over Rt. 113.

Later on, as we all had kids, at times, we would put them on our backs and still go blueberry picking.  Then, the older ones had their own empty margarine buckets with holes on the sides and string over their necks for “easy” and “faster” picking.  I don’t know who picked or ate more from the blueberry bushes.  My older son thought his were bigger than anyone else’s, except we might have been picking from the same bush.  It was so much fun.  We used to get so dirty.

But, that seems like ages ago.  Wow, it was.  On May 8, 1999 the United States Department of Agriculture proclaimed July as the National Blueberry Month.

As July gets underway with a celebration, I thought a blueberry crisp was a good addition to my crab, corn and tomato eating extravaganza.  It is an easy recipe with that buttery crunchy top; warm it up, top it with vanilla ice cream and, oh boy, it is so delicious!!

At the present time, North America produces 90% of the world production of blueberries.  The harvest runs from mid-April to early October; the peak harvest being in July.

Hope you like this recipe because it is so easy; can be doubled and can also be adapted so that people with gluten allergies can enjoy it, as well.

Blueberry Crisp

2 1/2 cups of fresh blueberries, washed and drained well

img_5240

1/4 cup granulated white sugar (I used Splenda blend)

1 tablespoon corn startch

2 teaspoons lemon juice

a sprinkle of black pepper

1/4 cup packed brown sugar (I used Splenda Blend)

1/2 teaspoon (or more) cinnamon

1/3 cup of flour (I used Pamela’s Pancake & Baking Mix Gluten Free)

img_5244

3/4 cup quick cooking rolled oats (I used Lara’s Rolled Oats)

img_5245

Pinch of salt

1/2 stick softened butter (about 4 tablespoons)

Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees.

In a bowl combine the blueberries, granulated sugar, corn starch, lemon juice, and pepper.  Mix and combine evenly.

Pour into a buttered baking dish.

In the same bowl combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, oats, salt, and butter.  Stir with a fork until the mixture is crumbly and evenly blended.

img_5241

Spread the mixture over the berries and bake in a 375 degree oven for 40 minutes.

img_5247

Let cool to warm before serving.

Enjoy…..and make it your own….talk to you later…

Happy 4th of July!!!, Commemorating a Day of Deliverance

img_4469

The legal separation of the 13 colonies from Britain occurred on 7/2/76; therefore the date the Resolution of Independence was approved.

John Adams  wrote to his wife, Abigail:

“The second day of July, 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America.  I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.  It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.  It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

He was off by just two days because the revisions were finally approved on July 4th.

As I walked my neighborhood and drove up and down the beaches, the predominant colors, whether decorating a mailbox or displaying with pride our flag, were definitely, red, white and blue.

Then, I could not help to think about our servicemen overseas; some of us celebrate, while others are defending it, so that we can celebrate.

This is small time living in a coastal town.  I remember so well taking my kids to the 4th of July parade so many years ago in Bethany.  That was our home for many years.  It is, definitely, much bigger and more organized now.  The town has grown so much and Bethany is a destination for families.

The events in Bethany Beach are a slice of true Americana.  Bring on the parade and the fire engines.  At the time, candy was thrown to all of us watching.  Countless flags and the predominant colors; Red, White, and Blue.

Please watch the weather because the rain date is Tuesday, 7/5.

Rehoboth Beach is a fun town with unobstructed wide beaches, the boardwalk, the fries, the popcorn, ice cream, pizza and the trendy restaurants, shops, the arts and entertainment that fill the Nation’s Summer Capital.

The Jolly Trolley Shuttle will operate 8 a.m. until 2 a.m.  The regular route will be altered for that evening, while Rehoboth Avenue is closed.  It will have a stop on Christian St., uptown, behind Jack Lingo Realtor.

9:15-ish – Finally, the Fireworks!!!!!! Visible from the Boardwalk and Beach.

After the Fireworks, don’t leave town yet!! You probably won’t, anyway, so remember the Funsters will be playing at the Bandstand.  Take a bench and enjoy the show.

Thursday, 7/7 – It should be a little quieter.  Catch a movie under the stars.  Cinema by the Surf will present Nanny McPhee Returns.  It will be at the Rehoboth Bandstand at dusk.  Bring the whole family and friends.  Benches are available, but you can also bring our own chair.  Free!!

If you feel overwhelmed by all this commotion, then sit back, relax and have something to quench that thirst.

IMG_2154

Hey, wait don’t go.  Remember how I am always raving about Freeman’s corn, well this morning, there was a huge line.  They had not even put up their tent and oriental rug.   My choice today was the mixed corn; white and yellow.  It is total sweetness; called a “bi”.
