Destination? Sewing Outlet, Federalsburg, Maryland, Drapery, Slipcover Fabrics, Upholstery Fabrics, Decorative Trims, Window Hardware, Supplies, Upholstery and Decorating Services, Discount Prices, Great Savings!!

dscn1896

I really do not sew…clueless.  Not planning on learning either.  But, I do know when I see savings at the end of the tunnel.  For so many years, I went to the Sewing Outlet located at 121 North Main Street, Federalsburg, Maryland 21632.  Tels.  410-754-8961 and 800-734-8961.

dscn1901

This company has been in existence since 1967, with the word OUTLET.  Outlet was not even in the horizon in Rehoboth Beach at that time.  But, at the Sewing Outlet the savings were tremendous even back in those times.  For all of you that do “outlet” shopping, I believe Ocean Outlets, in Rehoboth Beach opened in April, 1989.  They were called Ocean Outlets back then and the developer was Land Design.  The first phase opened with 90,000 sq.ft. with 30 stores, carrying brandname merchandise at discount prices.  Parking for 475 cars.  Those were the beginnings and if you have shopped at the outlets in Rehoboth you know that the expansions of the rest of the phases were incredible…also, with new owners as Tanger Outlets.

So, when my friend, Jody, told me she was looking for fabric for slipcovers for a couple of sofas and pillows, it was a no brainer to pass on to her this info.  I also volunteered to go on our expedition.  I do not think I had been to the Sewing Outlet in about 15 years or even more.  From the Delaware Beaches is takes about 45 minutes or a bit more to get there.  Going through the back roads..

dscn1902

Upon arriving at Federalsburg, it felt as if time had not changed this smalll town.  It amazes me how towns that are on the river with so much to offer just stand still.  Federalsburg is near Seaford, Denton, and Easton but the town is soooo quiet.

dscn1897

The Sewing Outlet opens Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  Their email address is Sewout@verizon.net.  For anyoyone planning to do or have someone else do any sewing, I can tell you that this is the place to go.  It is almost a one stop shopping with commercial and business services, slipcover and upholstery fabrics, trims, hardware, pillow forms, supplies, tools, decorating services, including custom window treatments, custome bedding, and most of all;a very experienced staff.

dscn1894

The Sewing Outlet has hundreds of fabrics, including upholstery fabrics in stock.  Over 1,000 sample books for special orders, as well, with incredible savings.

IMG_1418-225x300

I have been a fan of Em-ing’s for years. I like their End of the Month Friday Pig Roasts, as well. They are popular and until the last bit is sold, they will be there. Today, is the day!! It is their first one of the Fall Season.

dscn8322-300x225

It is a very professional operation…catering, online sales, turkeys for the holidays…check them out!! Traveling on Rt. 113 north or south? Pick up some carry out and keep them happy while driving.

I know that for some roasting a pig seems a little….shall we say too much. But, for many it is the most delicious thing. And, the skin…crispy is awesome! I know, not very healthy, but it is only once a month.

dscn8325-225x300IMG_1410-300x225

Everything is prepared inhouse….You can get every day BBQ; beef, chicken, ribs…. rice pudding, corn bread, great pies, including some sugar free ones, and homemade sweet breads.

IMG_1414-225x300IMG_1415-300x225

Grab a bottle of BBQ Sauce or Hot Sauce….pretty good too.

IMG_1489-225x300

After the rain event on Thursday….this is an amazing Friday for a Pig Roast!! Have a good one!

Old World Breads, Bakery, Lewes, Delaware, Artisan Bread Bakery, No Preservatives, No Enhancers, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn1435dscn1429

Nothing better than a cup of coffe early in the morning with fresh baked bread.  I remember years ago when my grandmother in Puerto Rico would always invite her neighbors for a cup a coffee and bread in the afternoons.  It was a routine.

dscn1434

Stopping at Old World Breads reminded me of that so long ago.  Old World Breads are making a statement at the Delaware Beaches and beyond.  They are located at 32191 Nassau Rd., Unit 4, Lewes, DE 19958  Tel. 302-313-5191  Website?  http://www.oldworldbreads.com.  Their bakery hours at this time of the year are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.  Sundays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

dscn1433

Directions:  From Rt. 1 driving North make a right turn on Nassau Rd, right before the Nassau Bridge.  Go 1/4 of a mile and they are on the right.  From Rt. 1 driving South make a left turn onto Nassau Rd., as soon as you go over the Nassau Bridge.  Go that 1/4 of a mile and they are on the right.

dscn1070

Old World Breads are found at farmers markets in the area and beyond:  Historic Lewes Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, Rehoboth Beach Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays, Milton Farmer’s markets on Fridays, Penn Quarter Farmer’s Market on Thursday, and Annapolis Farmer’s Market on Sundays.  During the summer season, you can also find Old World Breads at the farmer’s market in Bethany Beach and Sea Colony in Bethany Beach.

Arriving at Old World Breads….we were not the only ones taking the bakery in.  Gorgeous breads, delicious aroma.

dscn1431

dscn1428

The croissants were ready to go…and they were.  Local jams and jellies, the perfect addition to any baked goods.

dscn1426dscn1430

Tons of local peaches peeled for just out of the oven peach pies.

dscn1421

Plum pies made with Frangipane.  This is a pastry cream used in baking desserts, sweets, cakes and pancakes.  It is made with milk, sugar, flour, eggs, and butter, mixed with crushed macaroons or ground almonds.  It gives the baked goods a special taste.

dscn1425

And last but not least we took home some flat breads.  Surprise, surprise…a little kick to get those tastebuds going.

dscn1432

Stop for coffee….try their breads and baked goods.  Say hello.  A friendly staff, ready to tell you what baking bread is all about.

Please Note that Old World Breads also has wholesale and special occasions.

Talk to you later.  Have a great day…it is cooler out there!!

DE Beaches Eat!! Tomato, Peach, Corn and Feta Salad, Sugar Meets Salt, Easy, Delicious!! Perfect for Labor Day Cook-Out!!, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches

The tomatoes are at the height of the season, the peaches are still sweet….this is pretty much a raw salad.  Bursting with flavor, it has everything to offer for a perfect end of the summer 2014 meal.

When I made this salad I used gluten free bread.  The recipe, actually calls for white bread with crusts removed.  Your choice.

dscn1155

TOMATO, PEACH, CORN, AND FETA SALAD

2 slices white bread, crusts removed, cut or torn into small pieces

1/2 cup plus 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Salt, to taste

2 ears fresh corn, shucked

4 ripe tomatoes, a variety of colors….or plain red will do.  About 2 lbs.

4 large peaches (about 2 lbs. too)

1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion or shallots (I used red onion.)

3/4 cups of sheep’s milk feta, crumbled

Pulse the bread in a blender or food processor until the bread breaks down into coarse crumbs.

In a medium skillet, over medium heat, warm 1/2 cup of oil.  Once warm, add breadcrumbs and gently toast until golden and crispy.  Transfer crumbs to a plate line with paper towels.  Season with salt.

Using a sharp knife, slice corn kernels off the cob.

Cut tomatoes and peaches, preferably into wedges.  Place in large bowl with onion slivers and corn kernels.  Season with salt, optional.

Add the Feta cheese.

Add  6 tablespoons of oil and toss to combine. And then, sprinkle your favorite white balsamic vinegar.  My choice was Cranberry Pear White Balsamic from the new store in Downtown Rehoboth Beach….The Olive Orchard.

Distribute salad among plates, then scatter breadcrumbs on top…..serve and enjoy!!

Destination? The Manor Tavern, Full Service Tavern, Restaurant, Monkton, Maryland, Maryland’s Horse Country, Bringing Back the Era of Sustainability

dscn0414

I have a strong connection with Baltimore, Maryland.  First of all, my husband, John, was from Baltimore.  For years I worked in Downtown Baltimore, watching the Inner Harbor take place.  Baltimore has fantastic neighborhoods and awesome food.

The Maryland’s countryside is so pretty.  Rolling hills….it is also horse country.  Back in June I visited The Manor Tavern located at 15819 Old York Rd., Monkton, MD 21111.  This is northern Baltimore County.  Tel. 410-791-8155.    Website?  http://www.themanortavern.com.

dscn0415

This is a full fledge tavern, with a property that has been in existence since 1750 when stables were located in what it is now The Manor Tavern.  If you are from Baltimore, probably, at some time or another you have attended events or have gone to lunch, dinner, or Sunday Brunch.  There are the regulars that make The Manor Tavern their watering hole.

The Manor Tavern opens 7 days a week.  Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 a.m.  Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 a.m.  Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 a.m.  And, Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 a.m.

They told us that we needed to have the Truffle Fries….a must.  At first I said “no way”, but, they twisted my arm and I had to order them.  First things first, though

We sat outside….afterall, it was June.

dscn0401

On the menu we saw the Crispy Brussels Sprouts….Also a must!!  Best I have had, and I do have them anywhere they will serve them.  Tender inside, crispy outside with red salt and a tangy dipping sauce.

dscn0395

We ordered hamburgers.

Mine was The Manor Burger.  A classic burger for sure.  Crabstone Farms Black Angus, topped with sharp cheddar, Swiss and apple wood smoked bacon.  Medium rare for me.  Delish!!  See those fries?  They are the truffle fries..hand cut, with truffle oil, garlic, and dusted with parmessan cheese.  To die for!

dscn0399

The Gunpowder Bison Burger made an appearance on our table, as well.  It had roasted garlic cream cheese, arugula, apple wood smoked bacon and truffle oil.  Again, the truffle fries were ordered.

dscn0397

The Manor Tavern is bringing back the era of sustainability.  On their property the organic gardens were taking shape.  The gardens work year-round.  The Manor Tavern also uses local vendors and growers.

After lunch we took a walk through the gardens and this is what was growing in June.

CAMP Rehoboth, Exhibit, Rehoboth Beach Museum, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, CAMP = Create a More Positive Rehoboth, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

CAMP_Rehoboth_Exhibit_at_RBHS

A new exhbit at The Rehoboth Beach Museum features items that illustrate the history of the organization known as CAMP Rehoboth.  With this exhibit Rehoboth Beach Museum honors the history of CAMP Rehoboth.

The organization, whose name is an acronym for Create a More Positive Rehoboth, was founded 24 years ago.  CAMP Rehoboth is a LGBT community service organization that has grown from its original small office on Baltimore Avenue, publishing a 4-page newsletter to a nationally-known organization with a long list of services, activities, events and programs.

The once modest Letters from CAMP Rehoboth newsletter now runs anywhere from 88 to 120 pages an issue.

Visitors are invited to visit the Rehoboth Beach Museum to view past issues of the newsletter, photos and t-shirts from the early days of the organization.

The shovel used to break ground for the new community center is on display, as is a bumper sticker stating “Keep Rehoboth a Family Town”, a tangible example of the tensions in the community that led to the founding of CAMP Rehoboth.  Also on display is a framed ceremonial copy of SB121 which added the words “sexual orientation” as a protected class under Delaware’s non-discrimination laws.

The Rehoboth Beach Museum is open 10 – 4 from Monday through Friday, 11 – 3 Saturday and Sunday.  It is located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue by the Rehoboth Beach Visitor’s Center and by the Roundabout.  Admission is by donation.  Call 302-227-7310 for more information.  And, please visit http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org
