White Gold:  Delaware’s Oyster Industry.  Area filmmaker, Michael Oates, returns to this film screening series with a sharply focused documentary about our changing coastal life.  Leipsic, Little Creek and Bowers Beach were once flourishing aquaculture communities, relying on huge harvests of Delaware Bay oysters, called “white gold”.  Schooners sailed the bay dredging as many as 900,000 bushels annually.  Today, the annual oyster harvest is less than 15,000 bushels and all but one of the schooners is gone.  Yet the commercial watermen endure.  Oate’s film captures this history alongside the story of one man’s struggle to bring the last wooden schooner back to its former glory….running time is 60 minutes.

Friday, 3/15 – Lewes and Milton, a Shared Heritage at 7:30 p.m. at the Lewes Presbyterian Church Hall at 133 Kings Highway in Lewes, Delaware.  Free admission and no reservations are needed.  These 2 cities share an agricultural, shipbuilding and historic heritage that has gone unheralded over the years.  Former State Archivist Russ McCabe will present those characteristics that gave the two towns their own cultures and those that they share.

Saturday, 3/16 – Holts Landing State Park Sea Hawk Trail Hike – 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.  During this 1.7 mile hike, participants will learn about the Inland Bays, the Assawoman Canal, and the history of the park.  Holts landing is unique and an undiscovered 203-acres area that contains a variety of beautiful landscapes, from bay shore beach to grassy fields and hardwood forests.  This property has a long recorded history as a small family farm.  The Holt family maintained a farm with a bayshore boat landing on the site until 1957, when the property was sold to the state highway dept…..During the hike, a park naturalist will be present to identify wildlife along the way.

The cost is $4 per person and pre-registration is required, by calling 302-227-6991.  Holts Landing State Park is located on Rd. 346 in Millville, Delaware, 19967. Tel. 302-227-2800.
