The first week-end of August is here!! Lewes is celebrating the first week-end of August with the following activities, events, and entertainment.
Saturday, 8/3 – The Lewes Historical Society Antique Show 2013 – 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. A 50th year celebration! Location? The Historical Society Complex at the Corner of Second Street and Shipcarpenter Street. Admission is $5 but children under 17 are free. Proceeds benefit their educational and preservation programs.
The show features 18th century to early 20th century antiques. All pieces are authentic. The Antique Show takes place among the Society’s 12 historic museums.
Casa Amici will feature a food booth, Vitelli’s Ice Cream and water Ice will have refreshing treats. Music by David Zipse.
Saturday, 8/3 – Sydney’s Music Revival takes place every Friday and Saturday at Bethany Blues Lewes. Location? 18385 Coastal Highway. Tonight Lil Ronie and the Grand Dukes. Entertainment begins at 8:30 p.m.
Sunday, 8/4 – Wake up with Yoga with Soul from 8 a.m. – 9 a.m. Yoga with Soul takes place every Sunday morning until September 1st. Just bring your mat or towel. Location? At Canalfront Park on Front Stree. It is free!!
Sunday, 8/4 – Noon until 2 p.m. Kalmar Nyckle will be docked at the Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal. It is Delaware’s Ambassador. They offer 2 1/2 hour public sails and deck tours. Make reservations by calling 302-429-7447. Or, visit http://www.kalmarnyckel.org.
Also, on Sunday, it will sail from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. All sails are $60 and $40 for children 17 and under.

Hello week-end!! If you are visiting the First Town in the First State, this is what’s going on in Lewes, Delaware…..The Delaware beaches might be a bit quiet this week-end, but I already can see the establishments doing repair work…I guess getting ready for another busy beach season.

Saturday, 2/23 – Improv is a form of theatre in which actors use improvisational acting techniques to perform spontaneously. Is in the moment; no scripts, no memorized dialogue and no rehearsal. Delaware Comedy Theatre is the longest improve theatre company in Delaware. First show for 2013 at Fish On!, located in the Villages of Five Points, at 17300 N Village Main, Lewes, will be Saturday, February 23rd. “Cupid Shoots Self In Foot VI: Bad Romance Edition” will be presented by this Rehoboth Beach based non-profit improvisational theatre group and school. Friday, 12/28 – December Monthly’s Screening will present the award-winning documentary “Bill Cunningham New York” at 7:00 p.m. upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway located on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach. This documentary traces the singular life and carer of the legendary New York Times fashion photographer, Bill Cunningham, whose iconic photos have spotlighted everything from hip-hop to haute couture. He is now in his 80s and continues to bike around NY shooting the New York Times “On the Street” photo section. The San Francisco Chronicle calls the film “deeply moving” and “visually stunning”. Saturday, 12/29 – The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and CAMP Rehoboth are co-sponsoring a screening of “Cloudburst” starring Oscar winning Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker at 2:00 p.m. The screening will be held at the upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway located on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach. This film was a 3-screening sellout at the 2012 Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival and features virtuoso performances from Dukakis and Fricker. Thias uproarious comedy-drama centers on the 2 women, a committed couple for 31 years. Stella (Dukakis) has a foul mouth and a taste for confrontation. Dot (Fricker) is losing both her sight and her grip on reality. When Dot’s neurotic granddaughter shows up, announcing that she intends to break the couple up by putting Dot in a nursing home, Stella sees a way out; they must head to Canada and get married. You get it all in one place; food, spirits, live entertainment, great atmosphere, kick a heel or two….Bethany Blues Lewes is located at 18385 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1), Lewes, Delaware 19958. Tel. 302-644-2500. Website? http://www.bethanyblues.com. It is open year-round.
The other night we decided we were in the mood for ribs. Bethany Blues is known for their succulent ribs, perfectly smoked. The restaurant is, actually, a good size. But, I like to sit in the bar area. There are some booths and tall table available. It is pretty lively on this side of the restaurant. If you do prefer a quieter atmosphere, then ask to be seated on the other side.
Bethany Blues is one of the restaurants in our Delaware Beaches where people with food allergies can eat without worries. The restaurant takes guests’ food allergies very seriously and tries to accommodate dietary restrictions as best as they can.
If you have a food allergy, please mention it to your server. In our case, it is a gluten allergy. The manager will come to the table to explain the menu and tell you what you can and cannot eat. Believe me, they have plenty of entrees and sides, including barbecue sauces.
Our entrees and sides were all gluten free. This is what we had.
To start we had their Crispy Pork Belly. A few slices of in house, cured and smoked pork belly, served with their apple cider dipping sauce. I usually order this appetizer. I love the combination of flavors.
To tell you the truth, I had never had the St. Louis Ribs. Our server recommended them and I think they will be my new rib addiction. They had a house brown sugar rub, then smoked for hours. Fantastic flavor. My dish was called the Delmarva Duo because it had chicken, smoked and seasoned, then a bit of their house sauce was added. The chicken was crispy and very moist. My sides were the cucumber and onion salad and a very “hot” jalapeno slaw. Very hot indeed.
An entree of half rack of Baby Backs, with sides of garlic mashed potatoes and the cucumber and onion salad. Also, very good.
No dessert was necessary….we did ask for a doggy bag. Guess what? Bethany Blues Lewes is open for lunch.

Year round, Sydney’s Music Revival presents local and nationally recognized musicians. Do you remember when she had Sydney’s in Downtown Rehoboth Beach? If you do, then, you have been coming to the Delaware Beaches for a long time. It was the place to go for live entertainment, and good food.

Friday, 11/9 – Top Notch Honky Tonk Comes to Bethany Blues – Something special has happened to Davina and The Vagabonds since their last appearance at Bethany Blues in Lewes. As a last minute substitute for John Mayer at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival last Spring, the band has been in huge demand both, nationally and internationally.
Two things distinguish this fine band; the first being leader, Davina Sower’s big nostalgic soul voice. Think of a meld of Bessie Smith, Etta James, Alberta Adams and Amy Winehouse, and you come close to understanding what Davina is all about. The other is the band’s crisp, clean sound…just piano, upright bass, trombone, trumpet, and drums.
Listening to Davina and The Vagabonds is like stepping into a wondrous musical time machine. They have the panache and superlative musicianship to recreate the retro sound and ageless appeal of golden age Americana in high-definition reality.  Rehoboth Beach Famous Boardwalk It is hard to believe that spring is around the corner. My daffodils are coming up!! Very exciting.
If you are coming to the Delaware Beaches on this upcoming Holiday Week-End you will have so much to do. And, if you are staying in downtown Rehoboth Beach, then you are going to be in for a treat. It is a Mardi Gras Week-End. Food, music and a Gumbo Cook-Off between many of the downtown restaurants. Downtown Rehoboth Beach is very walkable so you can restaurant hop. Here it goes:

 Horseshoe Crab “Crash”: A Tale of Two Species” is a documentary that illustrates the story of nature’s amazing ability to create fragile connections among the most unexpected creatures, and how easily humans destroy these connections. The iconic horseshoe crab is a part of just such a fragile connection. Saturday, 2/18 and Sunday 2/19 – Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Another Take Series presents “Beginners” and “Wish Me Away”. Both of these screenings will be held at the Screening Room, upstairs, at Movies at Midway on Rt. 1 (Coastal Highway).
Another Take, a gay and lesbian film series will begin on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the screening of “Beginners”. This comedic drama is an exuberant, infectious testament to the power of letting go and diving in… On Sunday at 2 p.m. Wish Me Away will be the next screening. This documentary won the Audience Award for Best Documentary during the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival. The film tells the story of Chely Wright’s calculated preparation in 2010 to release an album and a book (Like Me) that made country music history. She became the first country music star to reveal her homosexuality….
