Brunch?, Breakfast?, Sundays, Rehoboth Beach Restaurants, Delaware Beaches

Rehoboth Beach

Rehoboth Beach

Enjoying your long week-end?  You have to admit that even though it was a bit chilly; it still has been one beautiful day.  Looking to have breakfast or brunch in Rehoboth on Sunday?  Then, check my list because there are plenty of our local restaurants that serve one or another, or both.

IMG_1000

Breakfast vs Brunch?  I really don’t have a preference.  I am not too much of a breakfast person; a bold cup of coffee is what I crave in the a.m.  Breakfast gives you fuel to endure the day, though.  Brunch is a complete different animal.  It is a meal between or instead of breakfast or lunch.

IMG_0595_1

A typical brunch is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; late morning.  I think brunch is all about how leisure you can be.  Socializing and indulgence come to mind.

Corks, Bistro, Restaurant, Review, Historic Federal Hill, Baltimore, Maryland

“Menu planning meetings begin, in fact, with a good bottle of wine; its taste providing inspiration for new menu items.”  corks

When I first came to live, permanently, in the U.S. I first made my home in Baltimore, Maryland.  This city has wonderful neighborhoods; some very historic neighborhoods, indeed.  Federal Hill is one of them.  It is to the south of the city.  A lot of the buildings are in the Federal Hill Historic District and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  You can see the neighborhood from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

Federal Hill has lots of popular, retail, dining and entertainment venues.  It is the perfect urban living, having all these options within walking distance to all who make this unique neighborhood home.

So, I asked myself;  Who would’ve “thunk” it??   I found myself in Sobo, at Corks, a bistro, well known for its steaks, and I ordered Crispy Deep Fried Chicken.  But, guess what?  It is Chef Pellegrino’s favorite too. Then, not a bad choice.

Corks is located at 1026 South Charles Street.  Tel. 410-752-3810.  Website?  www.corksrestaurant.com.

dscn0367

I did not know about this restaurant, or even its chef; but leave it to my sister in law, Susie, to find the perfect eatery for a Sunday dinner in Baltimore.

dscn0366

Its Executive Chef and Owner is Jerry Pellegrino.  He was the first person we saw as we entered the bistro.  You see, the kitchen is located right at front.  He had the widest smile and my husband asked “I hope you have something gluten free for me?”  His answer was “Anything you want.”  Music to our ears!!  So, when they say that first impressions count…..

dscn0364

We were seated in the back part of the restaurant.  It was very cozy; paintings on the wall, an extensive wine collection was in plain view and a comfortable bar, as well.

dscn0362

dscn0355

dscn0357

The menu has something for everyone.  I cannot imagine you not being able to find something to your liking.  So these were our choices.

For appetizers:

Susie had the Corks’ Grilled Caesar.  Romaine, Parmesan Cheese and White Anchovies.  It looked great.  White anchovies are one of my favorites, having discovered them in Spain many years ago.

dscn0343

My husband had the Grilled Calamari.  Oven dried tomato, Kalamata olive and Sheep’s cheese.  When I tell you that these were the most tender calamari, I am not kidding.  If you like calamari, well at times they are a little chewey.  I asked Chef Pellegrino how could he get them so tender.   He said they are fresh.  Nothing frozen.

dscn0341

Mine was so good.  I am always attracted to a dish that incorporates beets.  Roasted beets and apples, walnuts and Maytag Blue with a delicious sherry vinaigrette.

dscn0344

Our waiter, David, told me that the portions were generous.  He was not kidding.

Entrees:

Susie ordered the Petite Filet Mignon (6 oz).  The steaks at Corks come with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach.  The creamed spinach had a sweetness to it.

dscn0352

My husband’s choice was the same thing with the addition of seared Hudson Foie Gras on top.  He thought it was very good, as well.

dscn0350

My generous portion of Crispy Deep Fried Chicken was a sight to see, with spicy cole slaw and fries.  First I tasted the fries and thought that if he had a stand at the beach with these fries we could wipe out the competition.  The slaw was the perfect side dish for the chicken and the fries.  It was light with a nice kick to it.  The chicken was gorgeous and it tasted as good as it looked.  So moist and tender.

dscn0354

Sweet Endings?, or, as they called it at Corks “Final Thoughts”.  I wished I could have, but it will have to be another time.

Corks opens every day of the week.  The bar stays open late.  Brunch on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

dscn0358

There are plenty of events where you can taste Chef Pellegrino’s specialties.  You can also meet him by attending his cooking classes.  Every event is on the website, above mentioned.

Thanksgiving Menu is up and you can attend from Noon until 6 p.m.  Call for reservations.

Want to organize your own class?  Then, e-mail Jerry at jerry@corksrestaurant.com.  You will need a minimum of 8 friends.

Corks has quality of ingredients, culinary competence, service and good prices.  The service was attentive; not intrusive, the ingredients, fresh, and the culinary competence, well, Chef Pellegrino is the “main event”.

Summer House Saloon, Rehoboth Beach, Lunch, Dinner, Brunch, Restaurant, Review, Delaware Beaches

img_7412

“Ask not what you can do for your country.  Ask what’s for lunch.”  orson welles

September is my favorite time of the year, but I am not sure about this September.  It seemed that all we have gotten are clouds, rain, and fog.  It looks like we are going full blast ahead with the Second Season.

As I was walking around Rehoboth Beach yesterday I noticed that the beach was so empty.  A solitary man looking for “treasures”, another one fishing, even thought I did not know where he had gone.

img_7414

The north end of the Rehoboth Boardwalk was totally deserted.

img_7415

Hey, I am not complaining; I was looking forward to this since the beginning of August.  The town all to myself. No meters and time for the “ladies that lunch”.

In the 1945 edition of Etiquette, Emily Post referred to luncheon as “generally given by and for women, but it is not unusual especially in summer places or in town on Saturday or Sunday, to include an equal number of men.  The result?  The term “the ladies that lunch”.  It was the ladies’ light meal.  And, men that chose to “lunch” were considerate “effeminate”.  Times have changed, haven’t they?

I am not kidding myself.  I love lunch or dinner.  On this particular day, 4 of us got together for lunch; 2 Debbies, 1 Jody and myself.  We chose the Summer House Saloon.  Really, it is known as the Summer House.  An institution as far as a gathering place, saloon, or “taverna” style eatery and watering hole in Rehoboth Beach.

img_7410

The Summer House was established in 1977.  For years, it has been owned by the Big Fish Restaurant Group.  I have written plenty of times about Big Fish Grill in Rehoboth.  I thought I better write about them; don’t want them to get jealous. Popular, crowded and consistent.

This Group owns 6 restaurants, one seafood market and one seafood wholesale company.

The Summer House is located at 228 Rehoboth Ave., right in the heart of the Avenue.  Tel. 302-227-3895.  Website?  www.summerhousesaloon.com.   It opens 7 days a week.  Mondays through Saturdays for lunch at 11:30, Sunday’s Brunch at 11 a.m. and dinner every day at 4 p.m.

I am glad that Jody suggested we had lunch there.  The reviews are mixed; but mostly they are on the positive side.

We sat near the bar.  No, we did not have any spirits.  We were so busy chatting that our server had to come back a few times.  It always happens that way.

img_7037

It also happened that we all ordered salads.  Trying to work out the pounds gained eating all that summer grub.

The Chopped Salad is a standard at Summer House.  Very good.  It has fresh chopped chicken, greens, cabbage, calamari, carrots, cucumbers, tomato, eggs, mushrooms with a garlic ranch dressing.

img_7033

The next salad was the Baked Goat Cheese & Mesculine Greens, topped with grilled chicken.  The warm goat cheese was at the bottom and the rest of the greens, dried cherries, candied pecans and the lemon thyme vinaigrette followed.  It was delicious, especially when you took bites that included the warm goat cheese.

img_7036

All caught up, content and happy to have seen each other finished a very nice afternoon.

Note:  Summer House, just as Big Fish Grill and the rest of their restaurants, are on my top list of eateries that are fully aware of customers with food allergy concerns.  They have menus for practically every food allergy, so please do not hesitate to visit the website above mentioned and you will see everything listed on the right hand of the site, including all their specials.

Have a great day!!  Talk to you later….

MIXX, American Fusion Restaurant, Restaurant, Review, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

 IMG_1295

I have to tell you that back on June 3, 2010, I wrote a post about MIXX.  When I first visited this restaurant I was pleasantly surprised by the decor, the service, the ambiance, and of course, most importantly, the food.

I went over what I had written on that post, and I must admit I would not change a thing on it.  What a coincidence; again I was visiting MIXX on a Wednesday; gourmet burger night.  Friends were joining us for dinner, as well.  Their first time at MIXX.

Cindi and Ross are good friends from Ocean City and it has been some time since we had seen each other.  The moment we sat down Ross was so happy.  MIXX is casual, eclectic, intimate, a little hip, and just the right size.  His type of restaurant.

MIXX is located at 26 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  The tel. is 302-226-8700.  The website?  www.mixxrehoboth.com.  It is recommended you make reservations, but we did not have any.  We were seated immediately; right after, it started filling up.

Cindi and Ross could not believe how comfortably crowded the town of Rehoboth was on a Wednesday night in January.  Even though there are restaurants that are closed, Rehoboth Beach has a vibrant community that supports the restaurants that do stay open.  These restaurants, in turn, offer great  specials, practically every day of the week.

On Wednesdays you will find $8 Gourmet Burgers and Half-priced martinis at MIXX.  So we started reading the menu; I knew what I wanted, though.

Yes, I wanted one of the burgers.  They had 8 choices.  Besides burgers MIXX offered appetizers, flatbreads, soups, salads and entrees like Deviled Short Ribs, Macadamian Crusted Rockfish, MIXX Crab Cakes and Mahi Mahi, which was topped with a papaya mango relish, served with dirty rice and grilled asparagus.

I have to make a comment regarding food allergies and they way MIXX deals with such a sensitive subject.  Their menu has (gf) after all items that are gluten free; they have plenty of choices.  If you are vegetarian/vegan, then they suggest you call ahead and their chef will prepare a special entree.  It is so refreshing that the restaurants in our beaches are addressing these needs.

We started with the Margarita Flatbread which was simple and tasty with fresh tomato, basil, spicy marinara, topped with fresh mozzarella.

IMG_1278

We also ordered the Hot and Spicy Edamame, which were tossed with hot and spicy sesame oil.  That dish was gluten free.

Two salads were ordered, as well.  Both were gluten free.   A Wedge Salad which was an Iceburg lettuce wedge with peppered bacon, hard boiled egg, roasted corn, bleu cheese crumbles, siracha ranch dressing.

IMG_1283

An Autumn Salad with wild grain rice, wine soaked raisins, dried fruit and cashews, served over mixed g reens with a maple mustard vinaigrette.  That salad was ordered as a tapas size.

IMG_1281

Most of the menu items can be ordered as full or tapas (smaller) portions.

I ordered the Apple Pork Burger, which had grated apples, ground pork, rubbed sage,  topped with caramelized onions, served with maple creme fraiche.  The combinations of all those flavors were good; sweetness well received.  I chose truffle fries for my side dish.

IMG_1287

Cindi had the Black & Blue Bison Burger, with cracked pepper seasoned ground bison, topped with blue cheese crumbles, lettuce and tomato.  She also chose the  truffle fries for her side dish.  She thought it was delicious and even took some home.

IMG_1286

Ross decided on the Angus Beef Burger, topped with bacon, roasted red peppers and pepper jack cheese, side of chipolte mayo, which he declined.  It hit the spot.  His side dish was the sweet potato fries.

IMG_1285

Truffle fries vs. sweet potato fries?  For me, it is a toss up.

My husband decided on 2 appetizers for his dinner and they looked beautiful.

The Crab & Feta Stuffed Portobello – It was a marinated portobello, lump crab and feta cheese topped with provolone, roasted red peppers and finished with a balsamic drizzle.  Gluten free, of course, and he loved it.

IMG_1288

He thought the Seared Scallops were perfectly cooked and seasoned.  They were served with shredded brussels sprouts, bacon, and a Dijon mustard aioli.  Again, gluten free.

IMG_1291

And, what can I say about the service?  Courtney was attentive, making sure all our needs were taken care of.  Pete came to talk to us, as well.

MIXX opens from Wednesday through Sunday at 5:30 p.m.  Sunday Brunch from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  On Thursdays they will offer half priced wine (glass or bottle), and Free (tapas) Appetizer, Soup or MIXX Salad.  Sundays is buy one entree, get one free.

So many choices, so many restaurants to try…a lot of possibilities….One thing for sure is the fact that sharing a meal with friends…is and will always be, priceless!!

Confucius, Chinese Cuisine, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, Restaurant, Review

100_4768

In Rehoboth Beach, one of my regular restaurants, especially if I am in a mood for good Chinese food is Confucius.  I have written posts about it in the past.  To tell you the truth, I don’t really think I have ever had a bad meal there.  I like it.  I feel comfortable there; relaxed.

IMG_0568

The Wednesday before I took off for sunny and frigid South Florida I ate at Confucius.  Not in the mood for cooking but wanting something spicy and interesting.  Those thoughts took me to Confucius.  They are located at 57 Wilmington Ave., tel. 302-227-3848.  Website is www.confuciusrehobothbeach.com.

It was quiet in Rehoboth that evening.  The town looked great; all decorated for the holidays.

Shawn and Danielle own this restaurant.  Friendly beyond belief.  The waitresses that work the restaurant are knowledgeable; always happy to see you.

For an appetizer I ordered the sauteed string beans.  This is a side dish but I love it as an appetizer.  Crispy green beans, with dried shrimp and soy sauce.  Shawn used wheat free soy sauce, knowing that my husband has to eat gluten free.

IMG_0559

I thought of ordering the whole seabass but they did not have it on that evening.  Here is the picture of my last seabass.  Crazy isn’t it?  I remembered that it was delicious.

100_4765

I decided on the Five Spiced Duck.  Shredded duck with celery, fresh hot peppers and cilantro.  Good combination and very spicy but I loved it even though I drank like 5 glasses of iced tea.

IMG_0562

The other dish was not on the menu but Shawn decided it would be a good one.  Salt and pepper shrimp, scallops and calamari with those fresh hot peppers, as well.  I tasted a scallop and it was crispy on the outside; moist in the middle.

IMG_0563

No dessert, but a good satisfying meal.  Very unique Chinese cuisine.  Lucky to have them in Rehoboth Beach.

Confucius closes on Tuesdays in the winter.  Mondays is 1/2 price of all fish entrees.  Sundays the Peking Duck is $15.95 for half or $29.95 for whole.  Sundays the brunch is still there with 3 items for $10.  On Sundays they open from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.  The other days they open from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Please note that Confucius also offers take-out.   Confucius is also very aware of the gluten free allergy.

Note:  On the subject of gluten awareness I have to tell you that I have found that in South Florida the restaurants are not aware of the allergy.  I am most surprised that restaurants don’t inform their staff about this or any other allergy.  South Florida is very progressive in many things, but on this, it is not.

Try it….you will like it…..talk to you later….

Brunch, Mimosas, Kir Royales, Recipes, Rapa Scrapple, Delaware Beaches, Ocean City, MD, Delray Beach, FL, Happy Easter!!

A Brunch is the perfect start for any day, but Sunday is the day we usually pick for this type of eating.   Here, in Rehoboth Beach, a lot of the restaurants will be serving brunch on Easter Sunday just like everywhere else.

But why is it that we have this obsession with brunch?  Is it because we are too lazy to cook on a Sunday; kill two birds with one stone? Breakfast and lunch?  To tell you the truth on Sunday, I want to keep it simple.  You can call it anything you want but to me having a good, full bodied, cup of coffee, seasonal fruits, baked goods and Rapa Scrapple, is what I would call the perfect brunch.

Rapa Scrapple?  What is it?  Well, it is one of my favorite breakfast meats.  Rapa is the brand name and to me there is no other like it.  Scrapple is a pork product and the company is in Bridgeville, Delaware.  Two brothers started this company in 1926; Ralph and Paul Adams.  The plant is still in Bridgeville and it is the largest producer of scrapple in the world.

I had the first taste of Rapa Scrapple in the island of Exuma, Bahamas, in 1974.  We were visiting friends and they had brought scrapple from Baltimore, MD. I have loved it ever since and my family is a big fan, as well.

My favorites are the original and the hot and spicy.  I like it thin and crispy; definitely, not mushy.  I hope Missy is reading this blog, because I know she likes scrapple as much as I do.  She might even comment on the blog.

I also like scrapple sandwiches.  Thin bread, not toasted and a little bit of ketchup, would make it the perfect scrapple sandwich.

Mark your calendar because this year’s Apple Scrapple Festival in Bridgeville will be Friday, October 8th and Saturday, October 9th.  For more info. please visit their website www.rapascrapple.com.

Living at the beach, usually means that you have a couple of guests at your house from time to time. I know that I go the extra mile when I have guests.  I really do want them to feel welcomed. So how do I make them feel special?  Read on…

Mimosa

Chilled champagne and orange Juice.  If you do not have time to squeeze your orange juice, the market has great choices.  Just get a good one.  Put 1/2 and 1/2 in champagne glasses and serve.

Kir Royale

A bottle of chilled champagne or sparkling wine.  This is such a simple and timeless drink.

1 part creme de cassis

5 parts Champagne

Pour creme de cassis into a champagne glass and gentley pour champagne on top.

Easy Caramel Rolls

Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees.

2 loaves frozen bread dough, thaw out and cut in pieces and placed in a well greased 9 x 13 inch pan.

Melt:

1/2 cup butter

1 cup brown sugar

1 tsp. cinnamon

2 Tbsps. milk

1 small package vanilla pudding (not instant)

Pour over dough.  Let it rise for about 3 hours.

Bake for about 30 minutes.

Let it stand a few minutes and then turn out on a board, cut and serve.

Ground Ham on Pineapple Slices

Combine:

2 cups cooked ground ham

2 tsps. prepared mustard

4 tsps. mayonnaise

8 drained pineapple slices

Spread mixture on the pineapple slices.  You want to put enough on each one to make a mound but cover the whole pineapple slice.

Bake slices in a greased pan in a pre-heated 400 degree oven for about 10 minutes or so.

The combination of the ham and pineapple is delicious.  It is a quick meal, as well.  Very versatile; not just for breakfast.

Enjoy it with friends; it tastes better that way….Happy Easter!!

Michael R. McCarty’s…Restaurant…Review…On the Island…Palm Beach…Florida…

100_0369

“We should look for someone to eat and drink with before looking for something to eat and drink, for dining alone is leading the life of a lion or wolf.” by a Greek Philosopher, BC 341-270

With that in mind 5 friends got together on Tuesday evening, in Palm Beach, and 4 elements were about to happen in equal manner; the service, the drinks, the cuisine and the overall ambiance.

When we visit Delray, a lot of times there are friends scattered around, visiting other towns in the area.  Such was the case so in order to make it easier for everyone, to dine together, we decided on Palm Beach; equal distance to all.

A few years ago I went to Michael McCarty’s and thought that would be a fun place to have dinner.  Michael R. MCcarty’s is located on 50 Coconut Row in the Royal Poinciana Plaza.  The tel. is 561-659-1899.  Website is www.michaelrmccartyspalmbeach.com.   Reservations are not required, but I think you should, especially in the height of the season. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and brunch on Sundays.  The attire is supposed to be business casual but I saw a wide range of attires.  I think resort casual would be the word.  Blazers are not required, as well.  The way to describe the food would be American with other influences.

The owner of the restaurant is Michael R. McCarty’s, someone I do not know.  He has been in the restaurant business since his 20’s.  Originally, on this location, there was a watering hole called Dempsey’s.  Michael R. McCarty’s opened his restaurant and has been doing very well ever since.

I love restaurants with open porches for gathering.  This is the first thing you see at Michael McCarty’s.  Those awnings amidst the trees and the green heavy wicker chairs make you just want to sit there all night.  Cocktails are served on this porch, as well as lunch and dinner.  On this particular night it seemed that it was mainly cocktails, people just waiting to go and eat inside.

The entry way and ambiance were definitely British Colonial.  You could picture this restaurant in any of the Caribbean Islands; the West Indies.  The dining area was large with plants breaking the seating arrangements.  Green and tans were the colors.  The bar was large, to the side, and seemed to be well attended on that evening.

It would not be Palm Beach if you did not find a splash of pink.  Michael McCarty’s has Rory’s.  It has pink patent leather banquets, aubergine walls and a bar.  Usually, this room is for private parties and looked like a fun place.  It is also used when the restaurant is crowded.  On Tuesday, the restaurant was comfortably crowded and this room was not needed.

100_0364

100_0365

We had a round table in a cozy corner.  We all took our readers out since the restaurant is very dimmed lit.  I like it that way but if you need reading glasses, you better have them with you.

Blake was our waiter.  Friendly and the spitting image of James Taylor.  We were surprised that he did not know who James Taylor was or Carly Simon for that matter.  Can you imagine that?  Oh, well, I guess I am dating myself. Nevertheless,  Ross mentioned a few tunes and he seemed to recognize some and told us he would check it out.  Blake was very attentive throughout the evening and he was quietly funny, if there is such a description.

We started with cocktails and wines and some of us wanted appetizers.  For my appetizer I started with a steamed artichoke.  It was a very good size and the dipping sauce had a hint of vinegar. Another friend had the trouffled fries, perfectly cooked with trouffled oil.

For our entrees, I had the special which was grouper.  I substituted the mashed potatoes for the sauteed spinach and asparagus. Another friend had my same dish but with the potatoes.  Blake told us that the calf liver was thin and cut in-house.  Two of our diners were calf liver aficionados so that is what they got. The next friend ordered the chicken Madeira.

The experience was that the portions were good.  Not too big or small.  But, actually the chicken Madeira was a pretty good size.  The grouper was very tasty and flaky and well seasoned.  The calf liver got a rating of good but some had had better in other parts of the country; good nevertheless.  Cindi thought her chicken Madeira was very tasty; tender.

For dessert Blake suggested Graeter’s Ice Cream.  This ice cream comes from Cincinnati and I had never heard about it.  Loving ice cream the way I do, then that was the perfect choice.  Mocha Chocolate Chip.  The ice cream was very creamy but I think I really liked the chocolate chips best.  Nice chunks of semi-sweet chocolate.  I thought it was good but no different than some of the good ice creams on the market.  We all have our favorites. Graeter’s was established in 1870, family operated, a French Pot process to create irresistible creaminess, 2 gallons at a time.

Our relaxed conversation and laughter continued, at the same time enjoying some decaf capuccino.

We parted ways after hugs and promises to see each other again.  Dinner with friends; priceless!!

See you soon….

Second Street Grille…Restaurant…Review…Delaware Beaches…Historic Lewes…

 100_0342

I have been thinking about Second Street Grille for a few days.  I have been wondering why is it that I never, at least, in my circle of friends, hear anyone say “Let’s go to Second Street Grille”.  Really, I never do.  So, I decided to find out for myself.  Believe me, Second Street Grille has been in the center of Historic Lewes for many years and I think the last time I might have been there was maybe 2 or 3 years ago.

Second Street Grille is located on 115 Second Street.  The tel. is 302-644-4121.  The website is www.secondstreetgrille.com. Please check the website because you will be able to see the menu on-line.  The restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.  During the rest of the week they have lunch from 11:30 until 3:00 p.m., lite fare from 3:00 until 10:00 p.m. and dinner from 5:00 until 10:00 p.m.  The Sunday Brunch is from 11:00 until 2:00 p.m.  The happy hour starts at Noon.

100_0344

Lewes looked really pretty on Saturday.  It was crowded too.  I think people have cabin fever and are ready to just walk and enjoy a sunny day.

I came through the side door of Second Street Grille which is the entrance to the bar area.  As I came in, there was a step-down and I did not see it, but I also did not see a sign warning patrons about it.  Probably the locals already know that is there, though.

100_0343

This corner of the restaurant where the bar is located also has about 7 tables, all of them with crisp white tablecloths.  It is decorated with French posters and the walls are red and yellow so I imagine the look is more like a bistro.  The music was good oldies.

It was lunch time and there were plenty of specials available.  It seemed the waitress knew a lot of the people coming in so I figure that they must have been regulars; a mature crowd.

Second Street Grille is known for their crabcakes but I really was not in the mood for them so I decided to have the Second Street Grille Salad with fried oysters on top with their balsamic vinaigrette dressing.  The salad was loaded with fresh veggies.  I never think to put radishes in my salad, but these ones were very good; crunchy and sweet. The rest of the veggies were yellow squash, broccolini, cucumber and watercress.  It had a very nice presentation.

In regards to the fried oysters, I will have to tell you that I was somewhat disappointed.  I like the breading of fried oysters lite because when you bite into a fried oyster you want it to be moist and salty; you want to taste the oyster and not the breading.  What I tasted the most was a thick breading that covered the oyster.  There is no other way to say it.

I like a balsamic vinaigrette dressing with a bit more substance than the one I was served at Second Street Grille.  There was something missing.  More of an aged balsamic; a bolder taste.  It was o.k. but not my favorite.

After paying my check I decided to walk to the main dining room.  The way I feel about the restaurant is that, granted, they do not have the best view in town but also I found that there was a lack of atmosphere and not just today, but I remembered thinking about that years ago as well.  I don’t know if it is the way the tables are placed on that long hall or that maybe the bar area needs to be more casual and lively.

Second Street Grille definitely has a following and I understand that Sunday Brunch is a favorite.

I had a decent lunch, but there is room for improvement.  I will go back and check it again in the summer.

Until then….talk to you later…
