If you have been watching how people are moving to Southern Delaware you can also see that there is no housing inventory. A house goes on the market and in a day it is sold. I have seen that most of the houses have awesome outdoor living areas. My deck and outdoor areas are not the most fancy ones but I have enjoyed them for a long time.
They say that eating outdoors actually makes food taste better. You are more relaxed. You pay attention what’s around you. Being outside is a mood booster. This particular week-end in Rehoboth Beach was so crowded and Memorial is not even here yet. People are ready to mingle and sit outside and continue to enjoy life as it should.
Let me get back to barbecuing. My favorite is cooking with charcoal. Chicken, I do like to marinade. Then put the homemade barbecue sauce afterwards. This chicken was from Lloyd’s in Lewes. It is the best chicken in the area.
I prefer the breast and others prefer the dark meat. Don’t mind eating it, don’t get me wrong. But I do like my chicken well done. I don’t want to see any red when I cut into it.
And cucumbers in vinegar, oil, and a little sugar or sugar substitute is it perfect. Looking forward to that summer corn we get here in Southern Delaware.
Grilling Shrimp is another favorite. These gigantic shrimp were from Big Fish Grill in Rehoboth Beach. Butterfly them, marinate them and takes no time to grill.
Veggies are great grilled as well. Love eggplant. These ones were from the Brush Factory in Lewes. All you do is peel it, cut lengthwise, brush with a lot of olive oil on both sides, sprinkle salt and pepper and both sides, and cover them with flat leaf parsley. The parsley even though it will mostly fall when turned over, it will still have that flavor all over the eggplant. So delicious.

This whole meal is perfect for today since it is Meatless Monday. Just a day out of the week to forget about meat and eat something very healthy.

I don’t know about you but I think we are becoming better cooks nowadays. I wish I could say the same about baking. It is not my forte but I can make a few things too.
I always say that Thanksgiving is a time for an overabundance of food, but, Christmas I like a more simple meal. If you saw my last post a prime rib roast is nothing simple. It makes an amazing presentation, more so if cooked right.
As New Year approached I think I had my fill of beef. Time for some lobster. It looks so pretty at a table and it is delicious. I decided to make a Lobster Newburg. I usually make recipes my own because I add a little bit of this and a little bit of that. At times a secret ingredient of saffron can make it taste out of this world. A few sweet peas….not sure if that’s even on a Lobster Newburg. Some make toast points…..Oh no, we had it over pasta. Pair it with a French 75 cocktail using Courvoisier instead of gin, believe me it is to die for.
The broth had so much taste because using the shells it is the way to go when making a seafood broth.
Save the rest of the broth. You can freeze it for another time.
New Year’s Day is a new beginning. Starting up with a decadent breakfast is always a must. Eggs Benedict, my own style too. Did not want any bread so on top of the grilled asparagus and Surry ham from Surry, Virginia, poached eggs and homemade Hollandaise Sauce.
And then came the Apple Toddy. This recipe has winesap apples which are hard to get around here, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, sugar, grated orange rind, rum, peach brandy, apple brandy, bourbon and lemon juice. You need to start this by cooking the apples then everything goes in a crok in a stoneware crock for 16 weeks. So start way before the holidays and place it in your garage in a cool place.
To drink it pour in your desired glasses and you can cut the apples up in bite size pieces. I never used to enjoy it years ago but I have acquired a liking for this old family recipe.
So in order to finish the day I wanted to get some black eyed peas. Nowhere to be found. Yeap, I went a little too late to some of the stores. I wanted that good luck everyone says they bring you. Black beans will have to do. I decided to make a black bean soup which if I say so myself was pretty good for not planning anything in advance. A little garnish here or there and it turn out as good as the photo shows.
And so another year begins. I did not make any resolutions. I will take one step at a time, enjoying every moment, every day.

I have to give a shout to our amazing, knowledgeable, and friendly server, Victoria. She was awesome. She knew the menu well.
Meeting friends in Ocean View, Delaware, at Northeast Seafood Kitchen was my destination. It was half price entrees. They have daily specials.
Northeast Seafood Kitchen is located at 29 Atlantic Avenue in Ocean View, DE. Ocean View is a few miles west of Bethany Beach. Just in case you did not know.
It was very busy. A lot of restaurants in the area are closed on Tuesdays. No big deal, we waited at the bar. It is not the end of the world.
We ordered 2 salads for sharing.
The first one was a traditional Caesar Salad. Loved those boquerones (white anchovies) on top. Pecorino cheese, house made croutons, Caesar dressing. Simple.
The Baby Spinach was a suggestion from Victoria….tomatoes, sweet shallots, Gorgonzola cheese, roasted pistachos, and a wild berry vinaigrette. Just perfect.
Before I share the rest of the photos I will have to say that the four of us had a very good dinner. Everything was cooked and seasoned just the way it should be. Nothing was overpowering.
The Chef’s Fish Board is where we chose the Catfish and Tuna. Those 2 entrees came with a butternut puree, mushrooms, potatoes, zucchini, squash, cabbage, and a lemon butter sauce.
The Tuna OC Maryland was spiced encrusted and my friend said she had not had a meal like that in months.
Two of us had the Crab Imperial Catfish Chesapeake Bay. It was pan seared and super delicious.
The Farm Style Seafood Stew was also a winner. It had fish, shellfish, calamari, bay leaf, celery, corn on the cob, and a white wine tomato broth.
And did we even have room for dessert. Just one please. So we ordered the upside down blueberry cake. It was pretty good too. Ice cream, nuts…shareable indeed.
I always say that you can review a restaurant all you want, but sharing a meal with old friends is what makes it priceless.

I have been on a roll….purging my closets, getting organized. Why do we accummulate so much stuff? It is true, that if you have not worn it or used it for a couple of years, then donate it to someone that can enjoy it. With that thought in mind and with the other thought that “someone’s trash is another person’s treasure”, I kept packing bag after bag. The Thrift Shop at Midway Shopping Center on Coastal Highway was not taking anymore clothing; only shoes, bags and other items. There is another one on the Forgotten Mile run by the Episcopal Church. Since then I have found out that there are plenty of other shops in the area. People have the same thoughts at this time of the year.
A few friends suggested I take some of my things to a consignment shop. That they do and enjoy getting that extra cash in their pockets. I started thinking about it and that is how I ended up calling Christine’s Consignments. This cute little shop is located at 200-A Rehoboth Ave., in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, DE. Tel. 302-226-1126. If you decide you would like to take some of your treasures that you no longer need to Christine’s, please give them a call so that you can make an appointment. At the time of the appointment you can bring your goodies so they can go through them. And please don’t take it personal if they don’t choose everything you brought that you thought was the best. Seasonal things is what they want and they want them to be in good shape and worthy of resale. If you keep that in mind you will do great.
Just like in any shop the clothing is divided in sections. There are new arrivals and also designer clothing racks.
This weekend in Downtown Rehoboth Beach are the much awaited and very well attended Sidewalk Sales. Hope you can make it. All weekend long, you will be able to get tremendous discounts, and find fabulous accessories. These sales start today, Friday, May 18th and continue through Sunday, May 20th, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. but some store hours may vary. Please check that out. It is going to be a rainy weekend but do not worry those sales are here to stay. Tax free shopping in Delaware!!

If you are bringing some of your treasures to Christine’s Consignments once they have gone through the items you will be given a number. And you will also sign a very simple contract. You should give them time to sell your items. And, you can discuss with them what you would like to do if items are not sold. They do donate to the local charities things that are not sold.
Like any other shop, items come and go quickly. The inventory is always changing. So probably is not one of those shops that you would likely say “I have been there already”. Always something new at very good prices. You are spending time at the beach and let’s say you forgot your accessories, Christine’s Consignments would be perfect to grab that item that will finish your look.

So, What’s Going On?
Thursday, April 7th – Film Programs/Cinema & The Arts…This film series brings art and artists to the big screen. Typically, there is a guest speaker who will introduce the film and also lead a post screening discussion. So, on Thrusday, 4/7, the featured film will be THE WINDING STREAM. This looks like an interesting film, more so if you like the Carter and Cash families. It tells the story of the Carter and Cash family dynasty seated at the heart of country music. Starting with the original Carters, the film traces the transformation of their musical act into the Carter Sisters. The marriage of Johnny Cash and June Carter. This is shot in HD. The Winding Stream features original Carter Family recordings but also showcases interpretrations of their songs as performed by such legends as John Prine, George Jones, Kris Kristofferson, and Sheryl Crow. It is told through interviews with family and friends who knew them best. This film has won numerous awards. It will run 90 minutes. A post film discussion will be led by George Spicer, who currently serves as secretary of the Eastern Shore Bluegrass Association. The Eastern Shore Bluegrass Association hosts concerts the second Sunday of each month in Marydel, Delaware. This film will take place at Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive, #2, Dartmouth Plaza, Lewes. This location is behind Wawa in Lewes. Admission is $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Friday, April 8th, Saturday, April 9th, Sunday, April 10th – What Makes Us Tick? This analytical series will be for the whole week-end. It explores the theme of Secrets and Lies through films and post-screening discussions. All screenings will be held at the Cinema Art Theater located at 17701 Dartmouth Drive, #2, Dartmouth Plaza, Lewes (behind Wawa). These 3 films will reveal the devastating effect that keeping secrets and telling lies has on individuals, families and communities. Issues such as redemption, forgiveness, and hope will be discussed. Each film will feature an introduction by licensed family therapist Joan Procaccio, and a post screening discussion facilitated by a mental health or educactional professional.
Admission prices for members are $15 per screening or $41 for the 3-film package. For the general public the admission will be $17 per screening and $47 for the 3-film package. ORANGES AND SUNSHINE – Friday, 4/8 at 7 p.m. – This is a British film and it is a heart-wrenching fact-base drama, when social worker Margaret Humphreys (Emily Watson) uncovers the horrific scandal of forced child migration from the UK. Between the 1940’s and ’50s, and as recently as 1967, nearly 130,000 British children, some orphaned and some forcibly removed from their homes, were packed into ships and sent to Australia. They were told their parents were dead and instead of oranges and sunshine, a paradise offered to them, they were forced into hard labor and sometimes abuse….It runs 105 minutes and it is Rated R. A post film discussion will be led by Perrin Smith. He is a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in working with children and their families.
DEAR FRANKIE – Saturday, 4/9 at 3 p.m. – This is a Scottish drama, with many awards won including a 15 minute standing ovation when it was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Dear Frankie is a working class fairy tale and it is the story of 9 year old Frankie and his mother Lizzie. He remembers nothing of the abuse he suffered as a child and his mother is determined to keep it that way. Through a Glasgow post office box he maintains a regular correspondence with someone he believes is his father. The letters, secretely authored by Lizzie, detail seafaring adventures from around the globe. But she cannot maintain this charade forever and torn between telling the truth and protecting her son, Lizzie gets more than she bargained for when she hires a handsome stranger to play the role of a lifetime. This simple story is rich with precise observation and it tugs at the heartstrings withouth being maudlin or manipulative….It runs for 105 minutes and is Rated PG 13. The post film discussion will be led by Suzanne Murphy, Suzanne Thurman, and Joe-Anne Corwin. Suzanne Murphy is a licensed clinical social worker who has a PHD in social welfare. Suzanne Thurman is the director of the MERR Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to the rescue efforts of stranded marine life. Joe-Anne Corwin was a professor of psychology at the Marine Maritime Acade in Castine, Main.
STORIES WE TELL – Sunday, 4/10 at 1:30 p.m. This is a Canadian documentary. Oscar nominated writer/director Sarah Polley is both filmmaker and detective as she investigates the secrets kept by a family of storytellers. This documentary explores the elusive nature of truth and memory, and how our narratives shape and define us. This documentary is Rated PG 13. A post film discussion will be led by Carolyn Walter and Suzanne Thurman. Carolyn Walter is a PHD, LCSW, Professor Emerita, Center for Social Work Education, Widener University and an Adjunct Professor at Univ. of PA, School of Social Work. Her area of specialty is grief, loss and transformation. Suzanne Thurman is the director of the MERR Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to the rescue efforts of stranded marine life.
Wednesday, April 13th at 4 p.m. – THE SELFISH GIANT, was an official selection of the Cannes Film Festival in 2013. It is a gripping story about 13 year old best friends, Arbor and Swifty. During a forced absence from school, the boys begin working for a dubious scrap dealer selling discarded wire to scrap yards. Their hard works pays off in the beginning but as Arbor becomes increasingly greedy, tensions build leading to a tragic event that transforms them all. This is a British drama set against the backdrop of post industrial northern England.
This screening is part of the monthly “Read a Movie” series in which members read a little-known short story in advance of the screening, then gather to share their thoughts about how well, or not so well the story expanded to the big screen. On the evening of the screening attendees can receive 15% off Dos Locos’ regular priced dinner entrees.

Bethany Beach, Delaware, also known as The Quiet Resort was founded in 1901. Originally, it was intended as a permanent yearly seaside assembly for the Christian churches of the country. Bethany is definitely, a family resort. It is enjoyed by so many visitors coming from the Mid-Atlantic States…and beyond.
For many years I lived in Bethany. Even though many things have changed around the town…..one thing that does not change is that small town atmosphere we all seem to be seeking now.
The flowers look gorgeous all summer long. How does she do it?
It was past 1 p.m. and the beaches were crowded. This time of the year until mid August it is considered the height of the summer season. Just be patient, there are a lot of visitors in town.
The beaches were packed and those umbrellas are iconic at the Delaware Beaches.
