A glossy brochure caught my attention; so did the mussels.  The pages were thick, colorful and  the brochure was easy to carry.  It was called A Taste of Five Points.  In it you will find menus, information on free outdoor entertainment, and special offers.  Yes, believe it or not, there are coupons that can be used at the restaurants located at The Villages of Five Points in Lewes.

But let me tell you a bit about The Villages of Five Points.  It is pretty much a self-contained community.  Location? On the corner of Rt. One and Savannah Road in Lewes, Delaware.  The website is www.thevillagesoffivepoints.com.

Plenty of amenities are found in this community.  Tennis, jogging paths, biking trails and playing fields.  Everything revolves around the center of “downtown”.

The beaches are only minutes away; so is the historic town of Lewes.

Screenings, Documentaries, Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival, Delaware Beaches

Inside the Big Tent - Food, Tickets, Festival Souvenirs

Inside the Big Tent - Food, Tickets, Festival Souvenirs

Movies can cause many emotions and so was the case today of the documentary that I went to see.  It was the perfect day, Veterans Day, to have seen Soundtrack For a Revolution.

If you get the chance to see this one in Rehoboth, please do so.  It was so good.  It tells the story of the American Civil Rights Movement through its powerful music.  The freedom songs protesters sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, in paddy wagons, and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality.

The film features new performances of the freedom songs by top artists, including John Legend, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean and The Roots.  Riveting archival footage; and interviews with civil rights foot soldiers and leaders, including Congressman John Lewis, Harry Belafonte, Julian Bond, and Ambassador Andrew Young.

The freedom songs evolved from slave chants, from the labor movement, and especially from the black church.  The music enabled blacks to sing words they could not say, and it was crucial in helping the protesters as they faced down brutal aggression with dignity and non-violence.

The film celebrates the vitality of this music.  It is a film of significance, energy, and power.  For more info. please visit www.soundtrackforarevolutionfilm.com

This documentary will be shown tomorrow, Friday, at 4:50 p.m.  If you cannot see it, then the next time your city holds its film festival take that opportunity and watch it.

The other documentary that I had the chance to see today was Casino Jack and the United States of Money.  This documentary portraits Washington super lobbyist, Jack Abramoff from his early years as a spirited member of the GOP political machine to his final reckoning as a disgraced, imprisoned paria.  It confirms the adage that truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

It is a tale of international intrigue with Indian Casinos, Russian spies, Chinese sweatshops, and a mob-style killing in Miami.

It is the story of the way money corrupts our political process.  Following the ongoing indictments of federal officials and exposing favor trading in our nation’s capital, the Director, Alex Gibney, illuminates the way our politicians’ desperate need to get elected, and the millions of dollars it costs, may be undermining the basic principles of American democracy.

It is infuriating and even fun to watch.  It is a saga of greed and corruption with a cynical villain audiences will love to hate.

Rehoboth Beach plays a role in the film with Abramoff using the city to establish a fake corporation in which to filter money.

For more info., please visit www.magpictures.com.

This movie will be also shown tomorrow, Friday, at 6:30 p.m.

This was the first full day of the 13th Independent Film Festival.  Everything, from my point of view was running beautifully.  The volunteers were doing a great job and each movie is welcomed by a member of the Film Society.

The turn out has been excellent and it is great to chat with the people in line.  Some of them make this week for a time to get together at the beach to unwind, watch great films and explore our restaurants.

Note:  Information for this post was taken from the Rehoboth Beach Film Society Publication.

Have a great time!!! Talk to you later….

Anita Peghini-Raber, Artist, Sponsor of Alamar at Film Festival, Exhibitor, Preshy’s Restaurant, Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival, Delaware Beaches

IMG_0087

It is the night before the begining of a frenzy of movie enthusiasts descend on our beaches.  On Wednesday, November 10th until Sunday, November 14th the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival will be taking place.

This year, it will be the 13th year in which American and Independent films, including shorts, documentaries and features will be here in Rehoboth Beach.

All films will be presented at the Movies at Midway.  For all information pertaining to the festival please visit www.rehobothfilm.com

Already there are so many sell-outs, but even though a film might be listed as sold-out, there are many tickets that come back to the Box Office throughout the Festival so visit the Box Office in the Big Tent to check screening status.

It has been suggested that Sunday afternoon is a wonderful time to purchase tickets as many movie marathoners end early and return tickets.

The Big Tent was getting ready this afternoon.  It is located behind the theater and it is where you will go to check the status of screenings, eat, buy posters, t-shirts, etc. etc.

IMG_0078

I have to tell you about Anita Peghini-Raber.  She is an artist and has been active in the local art scene for many years.

She sent me an e-mail yesterday and told me that she hoped to see me at the festival and that she was a sponsor of one of the films:  Alamar.

Alamar – “Filmmaker Pedro Gonzalez- Rubio treats the eyes and soul to a breathtaking vision of life at tropical waters’ edge through the bonding of a father and his young son.

Jorge grew up in Mexico and has been separated from his wife Roberta for several years.  She longs to return to her roots in Rome and is taking their 5 year old son with her.  Intent upon imparting his Mayan heritage to his son, Jorge is given several weeks to take Natan to the Chinchorro reef on the Mexican coast.

At first, the boy finds this new way of life uncomfortable, getting seasick on the boat and working constantly, but his father eventually eases him into the rhythms of a fisherman’s life.

As day to day existence carries on, the relationship between man and nature is subtly revealed and the boy learns to live in harmony with the natural world.

While Alamar is a fictional narrative, the film effectively blurs documentary and fiction as the main actors play themselves and the director delicately captures the serenity of life at a realistic pace.  Natan’s emotional journey leaves him and the audience with an experience that will remain long after the film comes to a close.”

Alamar is the recipient of many awards and Pedro Gonzalez Rubio is making his filmmaker’s debut.

The movie is going to be shown on:

Friday, 11/12 at 12:40 p.m.

Saturday, 11/13 at 9:40 p.m. sponsored by Anita Peghini-Raber

Sunday, 11/14 at 3:00 p.m.

The movie is in Spanish and Italian with English subtitles and you may visit www.filmovement.com for more information.

Anita has been inspired by the story and it reflects in her new creations; images of ocean scenes and parents with their children.

IMG_0082

She tries to create a mood with her paintings and mostly loves to capture her subjects deep in thought.

IMG_0079

Anita is exhibiting during the festival at Preshy’s Restaurant.  Preshy’s is right there at the Midway Shopping Center on Rt. 1 where the Movies at Midway is located.  Perfect place to catch lunch or dinner and then head to your films.

Preshy’s location is 14 Midway Shopping Center.  Tel. 302-645-8300.

IMG_0093

I went to check out Preshy’s today.  Looks are deceiving, you know that.  The restaurant was nice inside.  Just in case you were wondering.  I knew what you were thinking.

I wanted to take some pictures of Anita’s paintings.  I will have to tell you that I have not eaten there but the people there were having a great meal.

IMG_0086

The special today was a lamb shank and the aroma was so good.  Preshy’s specializes in Northern Italian cuisine.  Italian is spoken in the restaurant.

IMG_0084

Some of the pastas were, Rigatoni Calabrose, Penne Ortolano, Penne Firenze, Penne Arrabiata among others.

Dinner entrees are served with soup or salad and some of them were:  Salmon Livornaise, Gamberi Toscani, Chicken Scarpariello, Chicken Francese, Veal Piccata, Marsala or Parmigiana, Salmon Fantasia and other specials.

For dessert they had Tiramisu, Profiterols, Tartufo and others.

Anita’s paintings are exhibited throughout the restaurant.  The owner of the restaurant, Roberto, was gracious enough to let me take the pictures.

The Milton Theatre, Sheriff’s Sale, Art Deco Movie House, Milton, Delaware, Help Save the Milton Theatre

100_0633

Just this year I went for the first time to The Milton Theatre. I was taken by its beauty.  Even though this theater is the venue for many events in the area including movies and plays, it desperately needs the help of the community.

100_0663

I wrote a post on 3/28 so if you would like to see it just click on the month of March under Archives and scroll down to the date.

The Milton Theatre is located on 110 Uniion Street in Milton, DE 19968.  Tel. 302-684-3400.  The website is www.miltontheatre.org.

100_0655

The following e-mail arrived and I would like to pass it on to you, the community.

100_0652

If The Milton Theatre closes, downtown Milton will change, businesses will be hurt, and even the real estate values will suffer.

100_0650

So the facts are:

The Milton Theatre is scheduled for sherrif’s sale on September 21st.

We intent to save The Milton Theatre and ensure its positive financial future.

100_0661

We need to raise a significant amount of money in a very short amount of time in order to save the theatre building.  A war chest will enable us to negotiate with the lender over terms of a “buy-back” of the theatre building alone.

100_0657

We need to provide the lender with hard evidence that the Milton community and beyond are giving us the support we need to save this important cultural asset.

A local philanthropist has agreed to give us $50,000 and is pursuing matching funds from others in a position to help us attain our goal.

100_0678

To date, we have commitments of over $80,000.

We are open and operating at full capacity, and the Theatre is booked through mid-November.  The show must go on!!

The Milton Development Corporation (The Milton Theatre) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax exempt organization, and donations are tax deductible.

100_0688

The pledges made will be redeemed at the time the purchase of the theatre is approved by the current lender.  No money is expected at this time, but this pledge is a commitment to provide the funds when the pledge is redeemed.

We are asking for your support and your donation.  Please call the office with your pledge or send an email to mdc110@verizon.net.  Let us know how you can help, how much you can give.

Please call 302-684-3400 and have one of the board members explain our plans.

This week-end on Saturday 9/11 is The Sue Matthews Quartet – “Jazz Standards from the American Songbook” at 8:00 p.m.

 100_0669

Thanks for your support….talk to you later…

The Milton Theatre, Milton, Delaware, Movies, Music, Theatre, Delaware Beaches, 5/19/10, 5/21/10, 5/23/10, 5/29/10

100_0669

I don’t know if you are like me but when a new movie comes out at the Midway Movies in Lewes, I keep thinking I am going to go see it.  Then, it is gone.  That’st where the Milton Theatre in Milton, in Delaware, comes in.

Missed it at Midway?  Them Movies at The Milton is your answer.

This historic Theatre, which I fell in love with this year, continues to feature recently released films on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons in May.  The 2010 season of plays will begin in June, therefore fewer films will be featured during the summer.  They will resume again twice weekly in the fall.

100_0666

This is what’s happening at the Milton Theatre:

Wednesday, May 19th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 23rd at 2:00 p.m. – NINE – This movie tells the story of Guido Contini (Danie Day Lewes), a world famous film director as he confronts an epic mid-life crisis with both creative and personal problems.  It was directed by Rob Marshall and stars Danie Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard and Penelope Cruz.

Tickets are:  $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.

Friday, May 21st at 8:00 p.m. – ROOM FOR ALL – It is a concert performed by the CAMP Rehoboth Chorus.

The CAMP Rehoboth Chorus is polishing up a reprise of ROOM FOR ALL, a musical show of show tunes and choral classics, for one night only at the Historic Milton Theatre.

Tickets are $15 per person.

Saturday, May 29th at 8:00 p.m. – Lou Rotondo’s DEL-RAYS will bring a powerhouse of nostalgia and contemporary music to the Milton Theatre stage.  The group all got their start “back in the day” with such groups as The Passions and The Chaperones.  Their incredible sound doesn’t copy or recycle any group – they are DEL-RAYS and their music and vocal harmony magic brings audiences of all ages to their feet wherever they go.

Tickets:  $20 per person.

The Milton Theatre is located on 110 Union Street, Milton, Delaware 19968.  For more info. please call 302-684-3400 or visit the website www.miltontheatre.org.

Have a great time.  You will definitely love this Theatre as much as I do.  Talk to you later….

Milton Theatre, Milton, Delaware, Art Deco Movie House, Delaware Beaches, Theater, Films, Arts & Entertainment

 100_0689

100_0633

That’s too bad I could not find anyone to go with me to a wonderful evening at the Milton Theatre on Friday evening.  The previous week, my friend, Debbie, and I attended the film Hands on Harvest at this same venue and were taken over by the beauty of this art deco theater.

100_0639

100_0655

100_0657

I really wanted to go and take some pictures of the inside of the theater. I contacted the Theatre and Ellen Passman called me and informed me that there was a performance on Friday that I should not miss; to come a little earlier so that I would be able to take the pictures for my blog.

The performace on Friday was a live on-stage and vaudeville-themed murder mystery.  Ellen wrote it and was also starring in it along with the Delaware Commedy Theatre performers.  The Delaware Comedy Theatre, Improve Comedy was started in 2005 and it is a non-profit theatre company.  They are located on 131 Glade Circle West, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Website is www.delawarecomedytheatre.com.  Ticket Hot Line 888-446-7763 and for classes, workshops, and booking info. you may call 302-258-5443.

I can tell you that on Friday’s performance of the Mysterious Madcap Murder at the Milton Theatre, the “characters” were quirky and hilarious, mingling and interacting with the audience as they stayed in character, as well; that was part of the fun. Some of the people in the audience really got into it, and solving the murder we did.

100_0687

This wonderful evening of mystery was to help support the Milton Theatre.

Vaudeville was one of the most popular types on entertainment in North America from the 1880’s until the early 1930’s.  The performances were separate, unrelated acts grouped together on a common bill.  It came to be called “the heart of American show business”.

100_0663

The Milton Theatre is in the heart of the historic district in Milton.  It was built in 1910, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Milton.

100_0650

Back in the 1930’s it was the community’s celebrated art deco movie house, featuring silent films, and then, “talkies”.

100_0678

100_0653

When you enter this theater, and before performances or movies start, there will be continued showings of silent movies, and “talkies”.  What was so wonderful to experience was how the audience was truly laughing.  And, at a time when we have so much violence and drama shown in films, it was such a nostalgic feeling to experience a good belly laugh, that I just enjoyed the moment.

100_0683

100_0645

The silent films, had no sound, or broken dialogue.  The acting and dialogue were expressed through muted gestures and pantomime.  “Talkies” followed and these were talking pictures; exclusively shorts.  The first talking film was The Jazz Singer, released in 1927.

The ticket office at the Milton Theatre is inside and there are no computers; just a cash box.   It is very affordable whether it is a movie, documentary or live performance.

100_0662

One of the interesting aspects when attending anything at this theatre is that besides the usual soft drinks, you are able to purchase beer and wine, along with candy and other movie treats.

100_0664

100_0661

100_0665

On Friday night’s event there was a 50/50 raffle during intermission.  The winner, graciously donated her winnings to the theatre.

100_0679

The Milton Theatre has entertaining stage productions, dedicated to promoting the arts, and most of all making their productions accessible to the community.

This art deco movie house has been rescued from ruin and it has gone through, and is still on going, a revitalization process with a lot of work, dedication and love from the community, who are all volunteers.

100_0666

It has endured the tests of time; 3 major fires and many nor’easters. It is a community center for many events and is re-emerging as a destination attraction for a fast-growing arts community.

100_0688

Note:  Information for this post was taken from the www.miltontheatre.org, and http://en.wikipedia.org.

Have a good evening.  See you at the Milton Theatre some time….It is only 25 minutes from Rehoboth Beach, going north.  Talk to you later….
