The groundhog showed that it will be an early Spring!!…..waiting. At the beach, life is different; some might even say we take our time doing things here in, Slower Lower….time does not move from hour to hour, but one mood to the moment. Friday, 2/22 – The Rehoboth Beach Film Society presents a showcase of this year’s Academy Award contenders for the Best Live Action Short Film. You will have the opportunity to weigh in and cast your own vote for the winner. This year’s slate of nominees include “Asad”, “Buzkashi Boys”, “Curfew”, “Death of a Shadow (Dood van een Schaduw)”, and “Henry”. Saturday, 2/23 – In the past few years I have had very good friends diagnosed with breast cancer. Thank God they are all doing well after going through treatments, very courageously, I might add. Southern Lights of Life is an Evening of Living and Giving, sponsored by the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Dover, Delaware. From Rehoboth Beach, it takes about 1/2 hour. Dress code is Business to Glamorous. Cocktails at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and Silent Auction. The program, dinner and the Live Auction will start at 8 p.m., followed by the fashion show featuring breast cancer survivors as the models. Tickets are $150. Saturday, 2/23 – The Rehoboth Beach Film Society presents an informative documentary entitled “Cafeteria Man” as part of their 2012-2013 “On Screen/In Person” film tour, which brings filmmakers and their films together to participating communities. It will take place at 7 p.m. in the upstairs screening room at Movies at Midway, located on Coastal Highway (Rt. 1) between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. This engaging profile tells the true story of a rebellious, charismatic chef from New Orleans, Tony Geraci, and his mission to radically reform Baltimore’s public school food system by replacing pre-plated, processed food with locally grown freshly prepared meals. Geraci’s recipe for change takes him, and the audience, from Baltimore to the halls of Congress and the While House. This film was first screened at the 2011 Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival.
Attention Artists: The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is already seeking original art submissions to be adapted for promoting the 2013 Rehoboth Independent Film Festival. Their chef, Rebecca Krebs, is creating an exotic combination of foods to compliment the palatable blended wines for the evening. Filling fast….the popular dinners in Rehoboth by the best restaurants are winter favorites.
And…..if you get hungry while shopping and strolling through Downtown Rehoboth Beach….Modern Mixture and Cake Break are two of my favorite places to stop by in downtown Rehoboth Beach. It goes without saying that they are hard workers and their food is delicious. But, you can decide for yourself.

I stopped by to get a couple of cupcakes. Easy dessert for tonight’s Christmas Eve dinner. I even got a couple of gluten free ones, as well.
The bread is $5 per loaf.
The dinner rolls are $3.50 per 1/2 dozen or 60 cents each.
The Christmas Stollen is a fruit cake, traditionally a German cake. It is $15.
I love macaroons and they do remind me of my grandmother. Cake Break’s macaroons are gluten free!!

Say it isn’t so…another season is coming to an end for the Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market. Tuesday, 10/23, is the last of the 2012 season. But, not so fast…a Holiday Market; not to be missed, is around the corner. It will be on Saturday, November 24th from Noon until 3:00 p.m., at Grove Park, behind the Rehoboth Beach Visitor’s Center.
The Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market is a great way to support our local farmers. Residents and visitors alike have been attending the market on Tuesdays throughout the summer. Some visitors come in bikes; others drive…and plenty of visitors just walk with shopping bags in hand. Website? http://www.rbfarmersmarket.com.
Tuesday promises to be another gorgeous day in Rehoboth Beach. Just like it was last week. The white tents will be up again and you will find fall veggies and plenty more!!
Some of the vendors are restaurants and bake shops, as well.

Mariachi is known for its Spanish and Mexican cuisine. Last week Yolanda had Papusas. These are handmade stuffed corn tortillas, which originated in Salvador but are also well known in Honduras.
She also had veggies and rice and beans and plantains.
I have to tell you that, I think it was at the beginning of the summer when we visited Mariachi. Upon mentioning that my husband had to eat gluten free, the chef came out to talk to us. He was very knowledgeable and directed us to the right dishes. We much appreciated this gesture.
Masitas de Puerco – Cuban style morsels of pork marinated in a criolla sauce and roasted Sevilla’s bitter oranges.
A Lomo Saltado – Sauteed strips of prime sirloin with fresh tomatoes, cilantro, red onions and green peppers on a special Peruvian sauce.

Cake Break is a gourmet cupcake company. Their facility is peanut free. They also have gluten free and vegan cupcakes. I was telling Debbie that I love the density of her cupcakes. I don’t want to bite into air. They are excellent.
I am sure that she will have an assortment of them, just like she did last week, when I ate 2 of them; The Salty Dawg on the left had yellow cake with caramel frosting. The Chocolate Overload on the right had chocolate chip cupcake dunked in ganache, filled and topped with chocolate icing and chocolate shavings.
New from Cake Break! They are shipping gluten free products.
Greenbranch Organic Farm, located in Salisbury, Maryland, had the prettiest radishes. This farm is already taking orders for Thanksgiving Turkeys. I had received a tip that I needed to look for Miss Piggy at Cake Break. Say no more, that’s were I went on one of those hot summer days in Rehoboth Beach. There is something about cupcakes. They evoke childhood memories. One serving and you don’t really need to share with anyone. It is all yours to enjoy.

I am so glad to see Cake Break so successful. Debbie, her husband, and her staff, including her 2 professional bakers, are working so hard and it is, definitely, paying off. I have written in the past several posts. If you want to see them, just put the name on the Search on this website.
It was in the afternoon when I arrived at Cake Break. I saw Miss Piggy. Renee, who is a friend, and always on the lookout for interesting foods, told me about it. So here it is. Meet Miss Piggy. This simple looking cupcake is packed with flavor. Those contrasting flavors of salt and sweetness make this one awesome cupcake!!
I sat down to eat it as Debbie’s husband explained what it consisted of. It is a brown sugar yellow cake with a swirl of brown sugar inside. A drizzle of caramel with butter cream and bacon. A total winner!!
That’s all I was going there for and as I was getting ready to leave the Canoli cupcakes made themselves present. Devil’s food or yellow? Decisions, decisions.
Please note that even though Cake Break is a gourmet cupcake company they do offer all kinds of homemade baked goods. They open very early and stay open late, as well. Their coffee is delicious. I have tried it; bold and hot.

They are busy with weddings. They offer wedding cupcakes, birthday cakes and special orders. Just call them or stop by to meet with Debbie.
Cake Break is a nut free facility. Vegan and Gluten Free options are available. Both are the best.
