My Sister’s Fault a Puerto Rican “antojitos” delight. The 2 sisters are from Puerto Rico and have been in the area for some time. One bakes and that would be Rous and one cooks; that would be Angie.
Puerto Rican cooking is full of flavor and spices. And yes there is a lot of fried food, as well. As I am Puerto Rican myself, I can tell you that when I visit Puerto Rico I love eating the food…..fried plantains, pastelillos or turnovers made with meat, chicken or chapin which is a small fish.
The cooking can be very simple or it can be very exotic depending what local ingredients, fruits and veggies you use.
My friend Susan called me the other day to see if I wanted to visit My Sister’s Fault in Milford, Delaware. It is right in town on 10 SW NW Front St. Their telephone is 302-503-7446. And the website is http://www.mysistersfault-milford.com. Take Rt. 1 North and from Rehoboth Beach it is only about 25 minutes or so.
The menu is on the board and desserts are in cases. You can also order cakes for any special occasion.
We had 2 empanadas (turnovers) Puerto Rican style. The real deal. Flavorful, reminding me how good they truly are. We ate them there but you can take them to go and fry them in the comfort of your own kitchen.
We decided on a Cubano or Cuban Sandwich. The bread was warm but not pressed. The pork was delicious, homemade. This Cubano was very big so we had them cut it in half and as you can see it was definitely shareable.
Puerto Rican desserts like flan, pastelillos (pastry) de guayaba which is guava are also available.
It is a small place and the sisters are so friendly. They are open Wednesday through Saturday. They cook and bake on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday through Friday the hours are 8:30 to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
We only had a tasting but they offer Puerto Rican rice dishes, slowly cooked pork, stuffed deep fried potatoes and so much more. Check their Face Book Page or give them a call to see what they are offering on a particular day.
Their custom cakes are amazing.
Who’s fault is it? It is My Sister’s Fault.

Whether you are Irish or not, most likely you will be celebrating in some form St. Patrick’s Day. Here at the Delaware Beaches the Irish Bars are getting ready and last week-end the Annual St. Patrick’s Parade in Milton took place. Check my little Granddaughter, Sophia, at her first St. Patty’s celebration….the hat stayed put. In Milton she was.
Surprise, surprise, guess what was delivered to my front door? It is a Guinness Stout Irish Chocolate Cake!! Sent to me by my sister in law, Susie. The cake came from the Red Truck Bakery. The main Bakery is located at 8368 W Main Street in Marshall, Virgina. The tel. 540-364-BAKE . There is a Smaller Cafe at 22 Waterloo St. in Warrenton, Virginia. Website? http://www.redtruckbakery.com
The question was; should I wait to St. Patty’s Day or just have a little taste right away? I forgot to tell you that this was my birthday present, as well. Well I opened it up.
A little piece is all I wanted. I had to have it. The cake was dense. Dark as Guinness Stout and not overly sweet which is great because I thought it would go great for breakfast, as well. It had the perfect consistency.
Almost everyone has a passion…Brian Noyes found it. I was so surprised when my sister in law told me that it all started in Orlean, Virginia. I got married in Orlean at my in-law’s house, The Orlean House. So, needless to say it brought memories.
Red Truck Bakery ships nationwide. And everyone is talking about them. I have not tried their granola, but I understand that it is the best. And, why did President Obama want their pie this week? And, how did he get it on “Pi Day”? Please visit the above mentioned website.
Read the article by the Washington Post. Check the reviews….they are all amazing reviews.
And it is that time of the year where we send our loved ones something to celebrate Spring!! I am sending the Moonshine Cake….with real “Virginny hooch” to my brother for his birthday!!
I think this is a great find. Looking forward to another piece of my Guinness Stout Irish Chocolate Cake.
Nothing better than a cup of coffe early in the morning with fresh baked bread. I remember years ago when my grandmother in Puerto Rico would always invite her neighbors for a cup a coffee and bread in the afternoons. It was a routine.
Stopping at Old World Breads reminded me of that so long ago. Old World Breads are making a statement at the Delaware Beaches and beyond. They are located at 32191 Nassau Rd., Unit 4, Lewes, DE 19958 Tel. 302-313-5191 Website? http://www.oldworldbreads.com. Their bakery hours at this time of the year are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sundays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Directions: From Rt. 1 driving North make a right turn on Nassau Rd, right before the Nassau Bridge. Go 1/4 of a mile and they are on the right. From Rt. 1 driving South make a left turn onto Nassau Rd., as soon as you go over the Nassau Bridge. Go that 1/4 of a mile and they are on the right.
Old World Breads are found at farmers markets in the area and beyond: Historic Lewes Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, Rehoboth Beach Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays, Milton Farmer’s markets on Fridays, Penn Quarter Farmer’s Market on Thursday, and Annapolis Farmer’s Market on Sundays. During the summer season, you can also find Old World Breads at the farmer’s market in Bethany Beach and Sea Colony in Bethany Beach.
Arriving at Old World Breads….we were not the only ones taking the bakery in. Gorgeous breads, delicious aroma.
The croissants were ready to go…and they were. Local jams and jellies, the perfect addition to any baked goods.
Tons of local peaches peeled for just out of the oven peach pies.
Plum pies made with Frangipane. This is a pastry cream used in baking desserts, sweets, cakes and pancakes. It is made with milk, sugar, flour, eggs, and butter, mixed with crushed macaroons or ground almonds. It gives the baked goods a special taste.
And last but not least we took home some flat breads. Surprise, surprise…a little kick to get those tastebuds going.
Stop for coffee….try their breads and baked goods. Say hello. A friendly staff, ready to tell you what baking bread is all about.
Please Note that Old World Breads also has wholesale and special occasions.
Talk to you later. Have a great day…it is cooler out there!!

For some time my friend Debbie has been telling me to stop at Dolce on one of my road trips. And, that’s exactly what I did the other day. It was cold and gray as it has been practically all winter, so entering Dolce in the Downtown Milford brought a smile to my face. Bakeries and coffee shops are a great combination. This is a trip worth taking. Only about 25 minutes or so north of Rehoboth Beach.
The heart and center of Milford is the Mispillion River which runs through the town. Main Street is Walnut, and Dolce is located at 36 N. Walnut St., Milford, DE 19963. Tel. 302-422-5760. Website? http://www.dolcebakery.com. The bakery is open everyday, but closes on Sunday. Their busiest day is Saturday.
The owners are Chuck Stanko and George Carroll. Besides delicious baked goods which by the way are all made in house from scratch and without any trans-fats, they also offer soups accompanied with a home baked roll. They also serve breakfast sandwiches, as well. You can visit the above mentioned website to see what soup Dolce will be serving on the day that you might want to visit.
For customers, Dolce offers comfortable seating and free Wi-Fi.
Dolce entered the 2014 Rehoboth Beach Chocolate Festival and were awarded 2 First Places and one Second Place. This is not the first time they have won. It has happened year after year.
The Gooey Chocolate Cookie….you see it here on my plate. It looks very simple, but once a bite is taken you will be hooked. That cookie took the First Place on the Cookie Category by a Bakery.
Another First Place was their Stick in the Mud Brownie. This chocolate brownie is topped with marshmallows and then topped with a chocolate ganache.
The new Philadelphia Butter Cake took the 2nd Place in the Bakery category.
It was great meeting Chuck and he graciously let me take photos. Check the cupcakes.
The Cheesecakes! And, Strawberry Granola Bars!
Other baked goods like the Bear Claw and Croissants looked so good!
I sipped my coffee which was exactly what I needed…a pick me upper late in the day. I had to go but I will be back….Milford is one destination I am interested discovering further.
Dolce is open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The Christmas Stollen is a fruit cake, traditionally a German cake. It is $15.

My friend, Trish, and I had to stop and check out Cupcakes in Bloom. The last time I was at this gourmet bake shop was back in May. As the seasons change, Shawnee’s creations do as well. She is the main event; a celebrity. Shawnee won the second place in the Cupcake Wars.
Cupcakes in Bloom is located at 120 N. Main St. in Historic Berlin, Maryland. Tel. 410-641-9020. You can also find Cupcakes in Bloom on Facebook. Website? http://www.berlincupcakes.com
I don’t know about you but don’t you think cupcakes have such a perfect size? You really do not have to share. And, you should not feel guilty, either. I can see why they are so popular…..so much fun to eat.
Shawnee was explaining her cupcakes to some of her customers. She has a loyal customer base. I can see why; she is just so friendly, and her cupcakes speak for themselves.
I knew I would find interesting cupcakes for the holidays. She has great prices too. $2.50 each. Buy 5 and get 1 free.
A specialty of Cupcakes in Bloom is their Bloomin’ Cupcake Bouquets. They look so real. Shawnee needs a couple of days notice. You can call an discuss the order with her. Tel. 410-641-9020.
Take a closer look…you might even find The Grinch.
Merry, Merry…talk to you later.

On my strolling through the Historic town of Berlin, Maryland, with my friend, Debbie K., we found Baked Dessert. It is located at 4C Bay Street. Tel. 410-641-1800. Website? http://www.bakeddessertcafe.com Even though we thought we did not need any “sweet endings” after our lunch, already a friend had told us that the Cupcake Bombs at Baked Dessert would be something we should try. OMG…they were so good!! No guilt because they are small. If you eat them at Baked Dessert, which by the way, has indoor seating in a cafe style setting, they will be served warm with a tiny spoon so that you can scoop all that melted chocolate inside or peanut butter.
Debbie and I sat by the window to enjoy them.
Baked Dessert is a Green Business. Their ingredients are free of artificial colors, flavors, preservatives and trans-fats. It has already received substantial awards from the community and its customers.
You will find specialty desserts, artisan breads, local cheeses, cakes, sweet breads and pies. Baked Dessert also has gluten free cupcakes, macaroons, trouffles, rice pudding and granola.
Have a wedding or other celebration…they take custom orders.
Stop for lunch and have an organic and vegan lunch, or, do like we did; for dessert and coffee.
The day we visited, the featured wines were Yellow & Blue which are certified organic. The Cafe pays attention to sustainable, bio-dynamic and organic wines.
Bake Dessert Cafe opens Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. It does close on Sunday. On 2nd Fridays in Berlin, Bake Dessert will open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. with wine tasting from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Free WiFi is available in the Cafe for customers with purchase.
Bake Dessert Cafe is cozy and comfortable. While you are having something to eat, enjoy the local art by local artists including works by renowned artist, Patrick Henry.
I had heard it before; Philadelphia has a reputation for culinary excellence; the immigrant population having contributed to a large mixture of tastes.
I read a paragraph by Mark Glickman who wrote The Foods of Philadelphia and he described it best. You can find representations of these foods (soft pretzel, Philly Cheese Steak), elsewhere. But, only in Philadelphia and its environs can you find the real thing. You might get a soft pretzel at a mall in Cincinnati, or a Philly Cheese Steak at a cafe in California and wonder “What’s the big deal? Come to Philadelphia, and you will find out.
It is definitely different and I am enjoying learning about it.
In my last post I told you that there was more walking to be done. Leaving Parc located at Rittenhouse Square we kept on a good pace but something caught my attention when a door opened. I was not even paying attention, but the produce looked beautiful. Of course, we had to go in. What a surprise!! What a market!! Thank God I had just eaten, and thank God I was walking and could not carry anything else with me. Otherwise, watch out!!
Yes, in Center City, in the heart of Philadelphia. The original Italian market opened in 1939 at 930 S. 9th St. and it is still standing there.
This market is unreal and so is the service. I noticed the regular customers were known by name. I was just absorbing it all.
Here are some of the pictures I took.
Prepared Foods
Beef Department
The biggest cheese section I have ever seen with cheeses from all over the world.
Olive Oils to pick and choose.
Did not know that there were so many bitters.
Smoked Salmon
Hams and sausages
Breads
The Bakery? Cookies, Tarts, Cakes and Pies
Are you hungry yet? You know, on this particular post, it was best to be somewhat quiet and let the pictures do the talking. No way I could have explained all of this in simple words.
P.S. They also do catering.
Have a good one….got to go to my daily trip to Giant in Rehoboth Beach…. talk to you later….Chifa and the Food Trucks are still to come….
