It is almost that time of the day and if you think that this week-end at the Delaware Beaches, parking was not so bad…come next week you are going to be so happy I mentioned El Dorado.
Let me just tell you that I am a fan of El Dorado…and so are all the members of my family. The first time we visited this casual and locals’ hangout, we immediately were attracted to its family atmosphere. Aquiles is the owner and he has the brightest smile in all Rehoboth Beach…really!!
El Dorado is located off of Coastal Highway on Rt. 24, at 18766 John J. Williams Highway, Suite, 1, right here, in Rehoboth Beach. Tel. 302-645-1596. Website? http://www.eldoradorehoboth.com. On any given day, you will find customers that include the chefs and owners of other restaurants in Rehoboth Beach. Aquiles’ El Dorado is special and very affordable. Come as you are; off the beach and always plenty of parking to be found. It opens Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Please check the website for a complete menu and specials.
Aquiles’ cooking is considered Baja Style, which means that it is basically Mexican cuisine with an emphasis on seafood. Baja Style cooking also takes no prisioners; a mix of salsas, sauces, seafood tacos, burritos….sooo good.
The center of the restaurant has a Salsa Bar. You can add these condiments to your tacos and burritos.
An avocado salsa made with fresh avocados, tomatillos and just a touch of serrano chili peppers for extra cha-cha!
Tomatillos Salsa made with fresh tomatillos and roasted chili peppers (chile de arbol); a unique flavor.
Pico de Gallo…In Mexico it is really called “Salsa de Una”. It is a fresh blend of chopped veggies; bright in color and definitely with plenty of flavor.
Aquiles also offers his own marinated onions…Aquiles Style with fresh habanero chili peppers, carrots and onions….Oh yes..hot!
Of course, I was looking for something low in fat. The suggestion was that I would have the Mahi Mahi burrito, grilled, accompanied with rice and beans. Perfect.
My son ordered the fish tacos…his favorite with rice and beans.
And, when Earl showed up to eat lunch…of course he sat with us. Earl is the owner of Rehoboth Dairy which has the best milk in Delaware!! He is a fan of El Dorado and his choice of tacos was grilled steak!!
Chit chatting, great lunch, with family and friends…is always priceless!

Looking for something to do in Rehoboth Beach besides shopping on the last day of the Spring Sidewalk Sales? So, What’s Going On?
Sunday, 5 /19 – 4th Annual DE-feet Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk at the Tanger Outlet Center, Rehoboth Beach, Seaside, at 36470 Seaside Outlet Drive. Time? 8:00 a.m. Join the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition for this event….rain or shine! It will include a 5K run and walk as well as a 1-Mile Fun Walk. Run/Walk kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with registration opening at 7 a.m. You can still register online by visiting http://www.debreastcancer.org, click on events and scroll down to the date.
Funland will be opening on Sunday games and rides at 1 p.m. Located on the south side of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk. I know those kids will be driving you crazy if it rains.
Playland is also opening on Sunday…located on the south side of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk.
And so is Beach Arcade on the north side of the Boardwalk, next to Dolle’s.
Sunday, 5/19 – Last Performance at 3:00 p.m. – 9 to 5: The Musical – Music and Lyrics by Dolly Parton, Book by Patricia Resnick. All of the madcap hilarity of the movie is intact, intertwined with Dolly Parton’s score that is part Broadway and part pop, a little bit country, and all toe-tapping fun! What’s Going On? The Seaside Art Show presented by the VIA (Village Improvement Association) – 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. there will be an art show and silent auction. At 5:00 p.m. wine and cheese tasting with entertainment and live auction! Location? The Village Improvement Association grounds located on Boardwalk & Grenoble. If you are on the Boardwalk just walk north and you willl see it. This is an event to celebrate the VIA’s past and current contributions to the arts community.
Party in Dewey Beach today from Noon until 5:00 p.m. as the Delaware Seashore Parrot Head Club presents Boat Drinks Bacchanal!! Featuring Jimmy & The Parrots!! Location? North Beach. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased at the door or visit http://www.deseashorephc.com/boatdrinks, pay for your ticket, print it, and bring it in.

It is one of those days. Rehoboth Beach, Delaware is starting to open its gates. Today, the sidewalk sales are taking center stage….but the gorgeous day, is certainly one of those where you just want to park yourselves on those beach chairs and relax!
On the north side of town by Whiskey Beach people are taking the advantage of the warm weather.
On Rehoboth Avenue…it was a race to find the perfect parking space just in case you were carrying too many sidewalk sale purchases.
Out and about in downtown Rehoboth Beach…the pictures tell a story…get there before it is all picked over.
Sole is a very cute shop located at 110 Rehoboth Avenue. Tel. 302-2276500. It has plenty of good looking clothes and accessories for women.

Good Morning Rehoboth Beach! I hope you are here because this is one awesome day! Summer is around the corner and I cannot wait for what summer brings to the residents and visitors to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
On the Boardwalk those benches are the perfect place for people watching or relaxing while eating the Boardwalk Grub!

I remember when….just a year ago when Leo opened Modern Mixture. My oh my….word of mouth, consistently good food, always a big smile….Leo’s nuevo latino cooking is full of taste and very healthy, as well. His cooking is always fresh; always from scratch.

I was so hungry; having starved myself since I had to attend my “low fat” eating group. So, I said to Leo: Necesito algo para almorzar, bajo en grasa. (I need something for lunch, low in fat.) No problem, he said. Not on the menu but I have this meatloaf….what? I meant low fat, Leo. No no, he continued. The meatloaf was made out of chickpeas and beans, with some oatmeal. Just a slight topping of ketchup, mustard, honey, and barbecue sauce. Totally oil free and vegan.
Leo was going to place a small piece of meatloaf on my salad, then add about 1/4 cup of mashed potatoes….again, no oil added to the potatoes, just almond milk. And then, on the other side of the plate he added steamed veggies!! Voila!
It was so tasty and smooth, I could not get over it. I know I was hungry, but it was really soooo good!!
To complete my healthy lunch I had the Green Powerhouse Smoothie with green apple, pineapple, ginger, kale and coconut water. The best way to hydrate and cleanse your body.
Modern Mixture has a liquor license and Leo is going to town with great drinks like ModMix Margarita made with organic Agave juice and fresh lime and lemon juice. The Classic Mojito Cubano with mint, sugar cane, fresh lime juice and lemon-lime soda. Cuba Libre…Bacardi Solera rum, coke and fresh lime juice….Leo, how about Don Q…best rum from Puerto Rico? Anyway, Modern Mixture is offering fun drinks that are going to be very popular this 2013 Summer Season!.

Friday, 5/17 – Remembering Lewes – It is Lewes Historical Society May Speaker Series. Chuck Fithian, curator of archaeology with the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs will bring his extensive knowledge to his presentation of “The Honour of the State has not been tarnished” Delaware in the War of 1812. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Lewes Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall on Kings Highway.

Saturday, 5/18 – Youth Fishing Tournament for ages 16 and under at the fishing pier in Cape Henlopen State Park from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. $10 entry fee. T-shirts for the first 50 tournament entrants. Prizes will be awarded. Sunday, 5/19 will be the rain date.
Saturday, 5/18 – Lewes Celebrates Maritime Day 2013!! 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. May 22nd is National Maritime Day. It was first declared by Congress in 1933. It honors the contributions of the American merchant marine, civilians who have defended the freedom of the United States since 1775. During WWII they executed the largest sealift the world has ever seen. Its observance also honors the maritime industry. The Cape May – Lewes Ferry will host a local version of the celebration. Location? The Lewes Ferry Terminal. There will be a Remembrance Ceremony at 1:00 p.m. Engine Room and Bridge Tours, Maritime Displays…and food and drinks available. Rain or shine!
 Canalfront Park Saturday, 5/18 – First tour of Tour the Lighthouse!! Walk in The Steps of The Keeper…Reservations are required. Climb to the top of the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse and take a trip to the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse for photos. Tours are subject to change. Check the weather. Please call 302-644-7046 for reservations. You may visit the website to make a reservation and check their summer tour schedule…http://www.delawarebaylights.org/tours.html. Tours depart from the pier located behind the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal in Lewes. Free parking is available in the Foot Passenger Lot. Only 24 tickets will be sold per tour. Please arrive 15 minutes early. Life jackets are provided and must be worn. No sandals or open toe shoes allowed. and children must be at least 13 years old, except on the dates noted. One child per adult. The Harbor of Refuge Light Station is presently closed for repairs. However, tours will sail by for a close view and photos.
Saturday, 5/18 – Pooches in the Park – 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. This is a festive and new event which caters for both, the 2-legged and 4-legged family members. It will be held at Canalfront Park. This sounds like so much fun!! The day will feature a doggie spa for massages and acupuncture to drool over, pet portraits, specialized vendors, games and prizes. Obedience, agility and dock diving skills will be showcased. This event is sponsored by the Friends of Canalfront Park, Savannah Animal Hospital and P.U.P.S. (Pawsitively Unique Pet Shop in Lewes). Entry fee is $5 per dog, payable on-site or on-line http://www.lewescanalfrontpark.org. One dog per handler is requested. Bring your entire family; no charge for the human element.
I stopped the other day at Lewes Canalfront Park, which is about 3 acres located on Front Street on the banks of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. Popular events are held here year-round. There is parking, benches, and walking paths, perfect to enjoy the beauty of Lewes. “When the old boatyard site was being considered for retail and residential development, local residents and the Greater Lewes Foundation raised funds to develop the land as a park. The Firends of the Lewes Canalfront Park supports the programs of the Park while the City of Lewes provides the maintenance. New members and volunteers are always needed.

Meeting the appetite of all things local. That’s what you will find up and down the Delmarva Peninsula as Farmers’ Markets gain popularity. I decided to visit late in the afternoon the Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market. It opens at Noon until 4 p.m. every Tuesday; rain or shine. This was the second Tuesday and it was sunny!!
The Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market is located at Grove Park, behind the Visitor’s Center and the Rehoboth Beach Chamber of Commerce, by the round-about. Website? http://www.rbfarmersmarket.com.
A little music and very interesting vendors. These are some of the ones that caught my attention!!
ROOT GOURMET – Only about a year old and located at 19724 Coastal Highway. Gourmet on the Go. A sister establishment of Nage. Don’t want to cook or have unexpected guests? At the market, they offer a special menu…plenty of tastings, as well.

GREENBRANCH ORGANIC FARM – Located at 5075 Nutters Cross Rd., Salisbury, Maryland, they specialized in a wide variety of vegetables and pastured livestock; grass-fed/grass-finished beef cattle, free range pigs, and pastured poultry. Website? http://www.greenbranchfarm.com.
HABANERA FARM – They are a guest of the Rehoboth Farmers’ Market, which means that they are not there every single Tuesday. This is Maryland’s first herbal tea grower and certified processor. It is a medicinal herb and plant farm and retreat center on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, just outside Whitehaven near the Wicomico River. More than 30 medicinal herbs offer a possibility for a relaxed stroll. It sits on 21 acres. It also has a 7 Path Labyrinth!
Habanera Farm is open for groups and will work with your group or organization to create that special program. They are also experienced, entertaining speakers, available to visit your location. On June 1st from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Habanera Farm will be hosting their 3rd Annual Open House and Herb Day Celebration. They are inviting the public to go out and wander through their herb gardens, see their working medicinal plant farm and antioxidant orchard, enjoy a sampling of delicious, locally blended herbal teas, and have a great day. GELATO GAL – I spotted Amanda Randall, the person behind the best gelato in town. Amanda has a new location on Coastal Highway. It is at 20385 Rt. 1 in Rehoboth Beach. Tel. 302-227-1001. Besides her glorious gelato, Italy’s version of ice cream, Amanda also offer desserts, homemade chocolates….and she is also having wonderful offerings from her smoker. Pulled Pork, Smoked Turkey, Smoked Fish, Smoked St. Louis Style Ribs….I’ll be stopping by to check out her new location. They have done a lot of work.
SKIPPER’S BISCUIT COMPANY – For your pooches. This company makes its products right here in the first state and in the town of Lewes. They are all natural; made by the sea. Tel. 302-841-7003. On Saturday, May 18th Fifer is hosting their Strawberry Festival at their farm in Camden-Wyoming. There will be free live music, hayrides, face painting, pony rides, gourmet sandwiches by Nage & Abbott’s Grill restaurants. There will be strawberry BBQ, strawberry smoothies, ice cream, pies, shortcakes, chocolate covered strawberries and more.
And, remember that it is asparagus season!! Did you know that they are a member of the Lily family? And, that under ideal conditions, an asparagus spear can grow 10″ in a 24-hour period? They have no fat, no cholesterol, and are low in sodium.
