At the Delaware Beaches…in the town of Rehoboth Beach…You will find Fractured Prune…Not your regular run of the mill Donut Shoppe…

Their Motto:  “You Create “em”, we Make “em”. You are not kidding!!  This donut shoppe is different and soooo good.

Fractured Prune is located on 20214 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1) in Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-0747 and fax is 302-227-0748.  E-mail address: rehoboth@fracturedprune.com and website is: www.fracturedprune.com.

Last night I wrote about that the only thing on my mind after the bad weather we were experiencing was breads and muffins.

Then, this morning, as we woke up with the same type of weather, I thought that a drive over to Fractured Prune would be the start of a good day.

This business has been in operation in this area for 4 years.  As with other establishments, I pass by it every day.  I have not stopped in because I really did not want to eat donuts. Well, today I made for lost time. Really!!

You cannot miss Fractured Prune because the colors are purple and green.  Plus, with that name, your mind wonders….how did it get its name?  The following is a quote from their printed information:

“Back in 1976, when Tom Parshall purchased Josh’s 46th Street Market, he was thinking about a new name for his enterprise.  Several friends gave him suggestions, but he felt they all lacked imagination and individuality.  He had been reading through the abstract of the land he had bought and an unusual name caught his eye.  In the late 1800’s a woman named Prunella Shriek had owned much of the land in that area.  Tom didn’t think too much about it until one day he was browsing thru the Baltimore Library and came across a book titled “Ocean City Lore”.  As he looked through it, he was thrilled to see Prunella Shriek’s name with a paragraph devoted to her.

Even though she was in her seventies, Prunella was the only woman who competed with men in traditionally men’s sports such as ice skating races and skiing competitions.  She was an excellent tennis player and was county ping pong champion circa 1895.  Being older and somewhat brittle, she often returned from some of the more vigorous competitions in a wheel chair or on crutches.  Thus the township began to lovingly refer to her as “Fractured Prunella”.  When Tom read this, a voice in his head said,  “Hello”; he would name his new enterprise after this wonderful and spunky old lady and call it “Fractured Prune”.  And, there you have it, just in case you have been wondering about the name.

Fractured Prune is larger than you would expect with plenty of tables and even a large T.V.  You and your family can make yourselves comfortable here.000_0001

Donuts are made to order, in front of you; so warm; toppings and glazes are custom made.  No cold donuts are served.  I got to see how the process worked and here are a couple of the pictures.000_0005000_0006

000_0007For your first visit, you will be rewarded with a free donut.  Their signature donut is the O.C. Sand, which is a honey glaze, and cinnamon sugar.  So good, it melts in your mouth.

They have t-shirts and sweatshirts for sale with their logo and if you wear it, you will get a free donut.

At this time of the year, besides their 23 specialty donuts, they have added the Mom’s Hot Apple Pie & Pumpkin Spice with a choice of glazes:  Apple Butter Glaze or Pumpkin Spice Glaze, Graham Cracker Crumbs, Cinnamon Sugar.

One of their newest donuts soon to be on their menu, and I was lucky to try, was the Upsidedown Cake Donut.  It has the honey glaze, and cinnamon sugar and a pineapple ring on top.  The sweetness and the tartness of the fruit is a winning combination.

Coffee, juices, milk and other cold beverages are available, as well.

Believe it or not, they also have breakfast sandwiches and bagels and during the height of the summer season, it accounts for 12% – 15% of their sales.  This time of the year the warm donuts is what customers want.

Another type of sandwich to have in mind is the Prunewich, which is an egg sandwich made on a split donut.

This company is a franchise, all individually owned and operated.  My review is of the one located in Rehoboth Beach.  There are 10 in Maryland, 2 in Delaware, one in Florida, Mississippi and Ohio, 2 in PA, and 2 in Virginia.  For more info., please go to www.fracturedprune.com or call 866-369-3668.

It does not matter what business I go to review, always what stays in my mind is how the owners and employees have treated me during my visit.  Jody and Diane are the owners and operators and Judy works for them.  Their warmth and total belief in their product was a treat to see.

On this Sunday morning, on a gray day in the Delmarva Peninsula, the customers are coming in….Good Job!!

See you sooon…..
