What Defines a “Local”
When I started thinking about what to write on my blog I had to start by saying that I define myself as a local of the beaches, more so of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and Bethany Beach, Delaware. I am not from the area but I have, actually, lived here longer than where I grew up. My friend, Barry, does not think I am a “local”. Because I was not born here, I am, therefore, an outsider in his eyes. But, I am as local as they come. I pay my taxes, my children were born in Lewes, Delaware and have gone to schools in the area. I have my own stimulus package going on at the beach and I try to always buy from the local vendors. So, with that said, I can tell you that I have acquired a wealth of information of the area. Sometimes, it might have been through friends but pretty much is by experience. My friends tell me that I have missed my calling; I should have been a concierge. I like to learn and pass on information about my beaches. A good example would be where to buy the best corn in July and August and where to find fig trees in the area, besides the one in my own yard.
As I start writing on this blog, I would love to get your comments, questions and suggestions. I will be reviewing restaurants and other establishments. I will give you my own opinions on these reviews and, hopefully, if there has been a “so so” review, I will go back again to that place of service and see if things have changed for the better.
Living in the Delmarva coast is a treat. Sooooo, see you soon,
Gloria
Gloria,
A local is someone who has lived in the area a LONG time, even if she is originally from an exotic island. A native is a person who was born and raised in the area.
Love and good luck on your blog,
Sharon, Barry’s wife, and a native of Rehoboth
Gloria,
We will claim YOU anytime.
Good Luck- Missy
Gloria I am a native of Lewes and I would definitely claim you as a local. Great blog!
Love, Cindi
Where do you think the best organic local sweet corn is sold? In my opinion its sold at the Lewes Farmers market, but I don’t get around much in the summer.
My parents new home in Lewes has 2 fig trees. Any recipes? I don’t know what we will do with all of these figs! Marcy
Dear Marcy:
Figs are fantastic. They are sweet and full of vitamins. They are also high in carbs. The time of the year for the crop is probably going to be August. And, they all ripen at once so it is hard to keep coming up with new recipes. I love them just off the tree.
I will put together some recipes and give them to you or post them on the blog as the times gets closer.
Until later, Gloria
You probably know more about our area than most “natives”! I’ve learned a couple of things already and I’ve been here over 20 years-does that make me local?
Some of those natives have said that they are willing to adopt the locals. Thanks for your comments.
Great beginnings-continued success-best of luck!!
Gloria – Just got your email about your new blog…it is great and I definitely will look at it on a daily basis. Being a “new local” to the area, I am always looking for what the area has to offer. Thanks for thinking of me and sharing all of your yummy recipes. Also, I would love to go to Zumba classes…let me know when you are going again.

I thank you for commenting on my blog. Definitely, a lot to write about the Delmarva Peninsula and eventually other areas. Lucky to live where I live. Again, much appreciated.
