The Town of Lewes, Delaware is located on the lower reach of the Delaware Bay.  It is considered an ocean resort; the ocean is nearby at Cape Henlopen.

It seems summer has been flying by all of us.  Our second season at the Delaware Beaches is just as good….soooo, hang in there.  If you are visiting Lewes, this is what’s going on.

Saturday, 8/18 – At 3:00 p.m. at the Midway School #178, at the Lewes Historic Complex, Commander Timothy R. Dring USNR-Retired will present “Maritime Rescue along the Delaware Coast:  The History, Stations, and Equipment of the U.S. Life-Saving Service and the U.S. Coast Guard”.

Start at the Midway School at the Lewes Historic Complex, then, you are invited for a walk to the Lewes Life-Saving Station.

This is a free event and no reservations are required.

Saturday, 8/18 – Opera at the Beach – An Evening with Patricia Racette – 8:00 until 10:00 p.m.  Soprano Patricia Racette, a leading artist at The Metropolitan Opera and the Washington National Opera has been called “one of the world’s best sopranos” by New York’s WQXR, will sing a program of operatic favorites and jazz and Broadway standards. A Touch of Italy Restaurant will dazzle the palate with a pre-performance reception of Italian appetizers and beverages.  Location? Cape Henlopen High School Theatre.  This event is in support of Coastal Concerts and The Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing at Beebe Medical Center.  Tickets are $50 and $75, and can be purchased online at http://www.operaatthebeach.com. Doors will open at 6:30; performance will begin at 8:00 p.m.

Sunday, 8/19 – 4th Annual Greene Turtle Lewes 5K Walk/Run – 7:15 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.  This is a benefit for the Cancer Support Community Delaware.  Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. with the 5K run/walk race starting at 8:15 a.m. Races2Run will manage the event and provide complete online race results.  The event will begin at The Greene Turtle Sports Bar and Grille located at The Villages at Five Points in Lewes.  Walkers and runners will travel along a fast, flat course within the Five Points residental neighborhoods.  For more info., and to register online, visit http://www.cancersupportdelaware.org.

Tuesday, 8/21 – Chicks for Charity (Southern Delaware) Dinner at Fish On!, located at The Villages of Five Points, Lewes, at 6:30 p.m.  Two delicious entrees to choose from along with appetizers and dessert.  $25/person includes gratuity.  Cash or check only, payable to Fish On! This August dinner will benefit “Alex’s Lemonade Stand”.  There will be raffle items and  50/50 raffle.  RSVP to gals4thegood@aol.com. Tuesday, 8/21 – Summer Concert at Stango Park, 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., on King’s Highway, next to the Lewes Public Library.  The performance will be by The Navy Band Sea Chanters.  This is the United States Navy’s Official Chorus.  A variety of music ranging from traditional choral to opera, Broadway, and contemporary.

The calendar of events for this historic town is full.  You will find yourselves having a great time if you are visiting Lewes.  Check out what’s going on….

 

Thursdays, 6/14 – WSFS Bank Summer Music Program from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.  Location? Stango Park at 111 Adams Ave. at Kings Highway, behind the Lewes Library.  It is a free concert.  All you have to do is bring family, friends, and chairs.  USAF Heritage will be performing; a Brass Quintet.  More info? Friday, 6/15 – Sunday, 6/17 –  Lewes Boat Builder Program – An all day event. From the 1600s until the mid 1800s hundreds of vessels of all sizes were built on Lewes Creek.  The Lewes Historical Society invites you to be part of their Family Boatbuilding Week-end over Father’s Week-end.

Wooden boats called “Bevin Skiffs” will be built by the participating groups and families. On Saturday, from 10 until 4 p.m. come to the Lewes Lifesaving Station to view more than 16 wooden boats made by wood boat hobbyists.  After construction, the groups will launch their new handmade Bevin Skiffs at the Lewes Canalfront Park, located at 211 Front St., on Sunday at around 1 p.m.

Saturday, 6/16 – It is the 22nd Annual Lewes Garden Tour, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  Lewes is fully in bloom and these private and public gardens should be in top shape.  Rain or shine.  It is a self-guided tour of 9 private gardens and one public garden in the historic seaport town of Lewes.  You will also find a garden market with vendors specializing in garden related retail items, a free lecture on a gardening related topic and working artists in the gardens.  Food Tent in the Park.

The Garden Tour is $15 in advance or $20 of the day of the tour.  Tickets can be purchased at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce located at 120 Kings Highway in the Fisher-Martin House.  Payment by charge (VISA and MC) can be made by calling the Chamber 302-645-8073, toll free, 877-465-3937.

The Garden Lecture will be at the Zwaanendael Park at 1 p.m. – Using Flower Essence of Life’s Stresses-The Power of Flowers.

Sunday, 6/17 – Rise & Shine Fitness N’ Fun at Canalfront Park located at 211 Front Street in Lewes.   8 a.m. until Noon.  This event is sponsored by Quest Fitness & Kayak.

Enjoy a morning of health and well being and fresh air.  The fitness activities will be provided by Quest Fitness instructors.  Donations for each activity will be benefitting the Friends of the Canal Front Park.

Lewes Steps Out for Fitness – Info and Sign Up Booth!! They will be there from 8 until 1 p.m.   Get outside and get healthy!!  This is a popular walking program.  Those who sign up will be getting a free pedometer from Beebe Medical Center to record your steps. Lewes Steps Out for Fitness attemps to record millions of steps by its participants during the course of the summer.  The program is free and everyone is invited to participate.  If you cannot register on Sunday, 6/17, stop by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce beginning on June 18th to sign up.  The center is open Monday through Friday from 10 to 4 p.m., Saturday, from 9 to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 10 to 2 p.m.  Tel. 302-645-8073.

Sunday, 6/17 – Thursday, 6/21 – The 14th Annual Chautauqua with a theme this year:  Rockets Red Glare:  1812 in America.

The programs will be held at Zwaanendael Park, located at 102 Kings Highway, Stango Park located at 111 Adams Ave. at Kings Highway, behind the Lewes Library, and at the Lewes Historical Society located at 110 Shipcarpenter Street.

Chautauqua takes its name from a series of adult education programs first held at Lake Chautauqua, NY, during the late 19th century.   It was reborn in the 1970s.  Re-enactors take on the persona of celebrated historical figures, speaking and interacting with audiences.

All I can say is that after last night’s rain, I am sure the farmers will be happy today.  We needed that rain so that our local corn gets knee high by July.

If you are visiting Lewes, it is always a pleasure to walk around this historic town.  Check what’s going on.

 

Saturday, 6/2 – Rain or Shine is the Historic Lewes Farmers Market from 8 a.m. until Noon.  Location?  Lewes Historical Society Campus at 100 Shipcarpenter St.  Please note that no pets are allowed.  Website?  www.historiclewesfarmersmarket.org.  Also, you can find them on Facebook, like everything else.

 

Saturday, 6/2 – Summer Lighthouse Tours Begin.  From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. $35 per person, 13 and older, $15 per child, 6 to 12. 

The tours depart from the pier located behind the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal in Lewes.  Free parking at the Foot Passenger lot.  Reservations are required, so please call or visit.  Arrive 15 minutes prior to departure time.  Life jackets are provided and must be worn.  No sandals or open-toe shoes.  More info? As I mentioned, today, Saturday, 6/2, is the first tour, the next one will be June 16th, and then June 30th.  By checking the above website, you will find the rest of the schedule for July, August and September.

Note:  Tours can be cancelled due to inclement weather and they will try to re-schedule.

You will tour the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse which was in use and a home to resident lightkeepers from 1885 through 1950 when it was automated.  It is less than a mile off the beach.

The Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse is presently closed for repairs, but a close sail-by for pictures will be available.  This was one of the most exposed lighthouses on the Atlantic Seaboard.  The United States donated Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse to Delaware River and Bay Lighthouse Foundation for public use in 2004.

Sunday, 6/3 – Picnic in The Park, at Canalfront Park, located at 211 Front St. in Lewes.  To purchase tickets please call 302-645-7233.  No tickets will be sold at the event if they cap sales at 500. 

Adults $10 in advance, $15 at the door.  Food tickets: $2 each, needed to sample food.

R & L is serving the wine; Dogfish Head serving the beer.  Live entertainment, fun children’s activities.  Plenty of the much loved restaurants in Lewes are participating.

 

Tuesday, 6/5 – Outdoor Summer Concert Series begins in Lewes, at Stango Park.  The Park is located along Kings Highway, at the corner of Adams St.  Spreading trees forming an arbor on the carpets of grass, makes Stango Park the perfect venue for outdoor music concerts.

So, bring your chair, family and friends.  The series begins with Joe Baione Quartet.  This musician has a passion for all things jazz. 

 

Note:  If you don’t want to do anything at all but want to enjoy a most beautiful view, then just sit out back on the deck of the Cape May-Lewes Terminal.  An incredible view and On The Rocks Bar & Grill offering one of the best hamburgers in town, plus drinks and lots of other things.
