“Because there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away.”  sarah kay

Southern Delaware is lined up with beaches.  Up and down the different towns you can pick and choose which beach to park yourselves.  Just simple pleasures to be able to spend a day at the beach.  Each beach has its own personality.

Today was a gorgeous day in Rehoboth Beach.  Once again even though we are in the Second Season, the week-ends bring the visitors and it looks like we are back on the summer schedule.

My choide of beach was Whiskey Beach located at the Cape Henlopen State Park on the north side of Rehoboth Beach….also called North Shores.  The entry fee is $5 for in-state vehicles or $10 for out of state.  If you purchased your parking pass then by all means go right through.

In the 1920s, during Prohibition, this beach was a rendevous for rumrunners.  Also it had been a place for soldiers to party while stationed at Ft. Miles up the road with no one to bother them.

I love being near the WWII Towers.  They stand guard, as they have always done.  These two are on Whiskey Beach but there are six others around the area.  These towers were used as artillery spotting locations.

As you can see, you may bring vehicles (with permit) and park right on the beach.  Perfect if you want to go surf-fishing.

Today they dolphins were playing in the ocean.

People watching….that’s always fun….a book, and just enjoying this beautiful spot we live in and not taking it for granted.

Awesome weather this summer, for sure!!

Destination? Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, The Beaches, Blue Skies, Low Humidity, Time to Hit Rehoboth Beaches, The Nation’s Summer Capital, Southern Delaware

dscn5492

You have finally arrived in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  A destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment.  It is a great place to relieve the soul-crushing stress you built up in the traffic trying to get here.  If you have come to the Delaware Beaches before, you know exactly what I mean.  This week will be a test for all of you with lots of patience.

There are several beaches in Rehoboth Beach.  The state of Delaware has about 30 miles of beach.  You just have to find your own niche.

Rehoboth Avenue is Main Street.  At the end of this street, going east, is the Atlantic Ocean and an award winning Boardwalk, where summer memories are made every year.  Early in the a.m. you see the colorful umbrellas up and down the beach.  Just get there early to find a good spot.  You will have an advantage here because if you get hungry, just walk up and down and grab some Boardwalk grub, or, hit one of the many restaurant along the Avenue.

dscn9845

South of the Boardwalk, and near Queen St., is a gay beach, called Poodle Beach, frequented more by men.

And, past North Shores, at the Cape Henlopen State Park, there is Whiskey Beach, where on one side of this beach, there are a lot of families and on the other side is another gay beach, frequented more by women and fishermen.

dscn5111

There is an entry fee for parking at the State Park.  This beach has beautiful scenery with the WWII Towers right by your side.

dscn9860

I was so lucky yesterday, when my friend called me to see if I wanted to sit on the beach.  It turned out to be such a beautiful day after the rain.  She belongs to a club located in North Shores.  The club is called The Henlopen Acres Beach Club.  It is a private club exclusively for the residents and property owners of Henlopen Acres.  It has 535 feet of ocean frontage.  It was incorporated in 1958.  The club is a true beach club, unpretentious to say the least.

dscn5852

North Shores is a neighbordhood of Rehoboth Beach.  Beautiful homes with gorgeous views at the water’s edge.

dscn5844

An inherent stress, the unfolding of a beach chair….how about getting that beach umbrella just right?  Chairs and umbrellas, all set out for you.  No need to carry anything, which is right up my alley.

dscn5862

Looking up and down the beach….even though it was Sunday afternoon there were plenty of sun worshippers out there.

dscn5842

We decided on a particular spot, and what can I say but that life’s a beach and we are so lucky to be able to play in the sand.  Never take it for granted.

dscn5858

The Delaware Beach experience is a must.  Each beach has its own personality.  Just like I mentioned before, you have to find the one that best suits you and your family.  The serenade of steady waves, the company of a good friend, the interesting conversation, certainly beats staying home doing….

Leaving the beach at around 6 p.m., already you can see that some had already gone home.  It is a quiet time during those hours and the perfect time to chill out and relax.

Delaware’s Ghost Towers, Standing Tall, WWII Towers, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware, Sussex County

dscn3460

The WWII Towers continue to stand tall.  They are the subject of my post when we celebrate today the end of WWII.  These towers are silent sentinels of WWII.  There are 11 towers in Delaware.  Up and down the coastline you see them, but  do you really stop to look at them?  Having been writing this blog since 2009 has made me more sensitive and interested on what’s around me.

100_1038100_1037

You might be sitting on the beach in Dewey….notice what’s looking over you.

dscn4989

It was believed that after Pearl Harbor, the Delaware Beaches were in danger.  During 1940-1942 there were huge fortifications erected at the mouth of the Delaware Bay to protect Philadelphia.

These ghosts from years past were used as artillery spotting locations.  Our military was posted in each of the towers to coordinate artillery fire on enemy ships off our coast.

dscn5091

dscn5094

From the upper level the spotters could scan the Atlantic for enemy vessels, therefore, they could direct the fire of the guns mounted along the coast.

100_1040

The tallest WWII tower is 73 feet tall and the shortest is 37 feet tall.  Some have only 2 viewing slits, while others have 3 or 4.  A spotter could see 14 1/2 miles into the Atlantic.

dscn5102

Summer 2015 is almost here….Memorial Week-End officially opens the season.  As you come to visit us at the beach, take a good look around you….these WWII Towers might be standing as ghosts, but they are fascinating and have seen it all.

100_1028

During Sandy the following photo was taken….the north end of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk looking north.  Always standing…

Whiskey Beach, Gordons Pond, Activities, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches….Warmer Temperatures, Stress Free Holidays at The Beach, Southern Delaware

dscn2990

Hard to imagine that another year is gone.  If you are spending the Holidays at the Delaware Beaches then this week-end was awesome!!  Warmer temperatures brought visitors and residents to walk, shop, and dine.

Too much eating brought my son, Michael, and I to Whiskey Beach and Gordons Pond.  He told me I had to be more transparent when I mention about a “little” walk.  Walking 5 miles was not going to be on his agenda on Saturday.  He wanted to be on the beach.

dscn2984

On a beautiful day in Rehoboth Beach you can go north, past the Boardwalk, follow the road all the way to the Park.  You can park anywhere at this time of the year.  You have 2 choices.  You can follow the trail on Gordons Pond, which is so scenic and will connect you with Lewes.  Take some water with you.  Biking, walking, jogging, that’s what most people do.  Camera ready, as well.

dscn2334

dscn2338

We decided to go on Whiskey Beach.  To tell you the truth just the sound of the ocean, the gentle breezes, and the solitude of the beach made me realize how lucky I am to live here.

The WWII Towers always standing guard.  Never get tired of looking at them.

dscn2996

Whiskey Beach has a colorful past.  It has been said that during Pohibition in the 1920’s, this beach was a rendezvous for rumrunners.  Isolated and out of the way.

dscn2985

Others say that it was an ideal place for soldiers stationed at Fort Miles during and after WWII to gather and party without being bothered.

dscn2341

It is a great place to unwind and breathe that salt air.

Or, to walk off your Christmas dinner…from Hickman’s Meat Market located at 19730 Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach, DE.

Talk to you later….

Vacationing in..Rehoboth Beach, On Gordons Pond, Cape Henlopen State Park, Whiskey Beach, WWII Towers, Standing Guard, Ghosts from Years Past, Delaware Beaches

dscn5112

It was the way the sun was setting about 10 days ago.  I still remember because I was in Downtown Rehoboth Beach when I took off for Gordons Pond in a north section of town also known as North Shores and Whiskey Beach.  It is part of Delaware State Park.  The beach on that side of town is quiet and even though it does have a colorful past; it is, definitely, a family beach.

No guard was at the gate so I just went through.  I was not even dressed for my hike on the beach.  I don’t know what got into me; I wanted to see the WWII Towers.  It’s so funny because these towers don’t change.  They have been standing there as ghosts; guarding as they have been doing for so many years.

I started walking; pocketbook on hand through the path cars take when parking on the beach.  Don’t ask me why.  I could have gone by the water’s edge.  But, I wanted a different view.

dscn5090

The sand was a little deep and I was wondering how much farther I would have to walk.

dscn5091

Finally, there they were.  They looked so gorgeous, imposing, and majestic.

dscn5092

Eight of the 11 towers built along the Delaware and New Jersey coastlines during WWII are, here, on our Delaware Beaches; 3 in New Jersey.  Tower 1 is in South Bethany.  Tower 2 is south of the Indian River Bridge, Tower 3 and 4 are in Dewey Beach, and 5 and 6 are on Whiskey Beach. The 7th tower is in Lewes and the 8th in Broadkill Beach.

The towers were used as artillery spotting locations.  Our military would coordinate artillery fire on enemy ships off our coast from the towers.

dscn5094

Some of the towers have different heights and some of them have only 2 viewing slits, while others have 3 or 4.  You could also see about 14 1/2 miles into the Atlantic.

dscn5101dscn5099

It was believed that after Pearl Harbor, the Delaware Beaches were in danger.  In 1941 the German U-boats were sinking an average of a ship per week.

Note:  There is a book written by William C. Grayson called Delaware’s Ghost Towers, The Coast Artillery’s Forgotten Last Stand During the Darkest Days of WWII.  You can get it on Amazon.

dscn5095

Also, more info. on the WWII Towers can be obtained by visiting www.bethany-beach.net/world_war_ii_towers.htm.

A couple of people were still at the beach.  It was not the perfect beach day.  A little too windy and choppy.

dscn5104

I walked down Whiskey Beach and thought if there was any truth to its name.  They say it is called Whiskey Beach because in the 1920s, during Prohibition, this beach was a rendevous for rumrunners.  Others say it had been a place for soldiers to party while stationed at Fort Miles up the road with nobody to bother them.

State Law prohibits pets swimming or sunbathing on the beach but past the northern jetty, they are allowed.

It is, definitely, colorful and a conversation piece.

dscn5089

Gordons Pond is on this part of the Delaware State Park, as well.  It was getting too late, so I only walked for a short time.  Gordons Pond is one of 4 migration “super highways” in North America.  A popular resting spot for a wide variety of waterfowls.  Other wildlife is pretty abundant by the edges of the pond.

dscn5114

So, when you are visiting Rehoboth Beach and the downtown beaches are a little too crowded, head towards the Park on the north side of Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  More info?  Please visit www.destateparks.com.

Have a Good One!! Talk to you later.
