Eggcellent, Restaurant, Review, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Historic Lewes, Delaware, Delaware Beaches

Opening a restaurant during the pandemic must have been daunting but Alina and her husband who have both worked in the industry have done it. The restaurant is called Eggcellent located at 109 W Market Street in Historic Lewes, Delaware.

Eggcellent has been remodeled and has such a nice fresh look. You can sit indoors or in their covered patio.

The restaurant was originally started with breakfast and lunch but Alina’s husband who is the chef decided to open for dinner, as well.

Last Sunday just a week or so after this decision we went for dinner. We had the restaurant to ourselves because the word is slowly getting out. We loved it?? We were able to talk to Alina in a very casual; not in a rush way.

Complimentary to the table the Hummus was incredible. Not exaggerating. It really was so good and all homemade. The bread was toasted and drizzled with olive oil.

I love Rockfish. It is local so I know it is fresh. My Rockfish was served on a bed of Mediterranean veggies with creamy crab sauce and rice pilaf.

TC decided on the Salmon Oscar served over rice with asparagus, lump crabmeat and hollandaise sauce.

The portions are very generous so you may even take some leftovers home.

No dessert was necessary. We had eaten enough but the desserts for that evening looked pretty tempting.

It is great to see these young restauranteurs taking risks and following their dreams.

AboutMyBeaches has a Facebook Page and it is also on Instagram. Drop me a line will you?

Lewes Eats! Agave, Mexican Cuisine, Restaurant, Bar, Lewes, Delaware, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches…Buen Provecho!

dscn4871

One of my pet peeves is that I hate to wait.  More so, at restaurants.  With so many popular restaurants not taking reservations at the Delaware Beaches, well, let’s say that at times it is a bit annoying.  Not such a great way to start a post.   But, keep reading because I am posting about one of my favorite restaurants in Lewes…Agave.  It is located at 137 2nd St.  Tel. 302-645-1232.  You can find it on Facebook.

DSCN1072

There are times that the wait at Agave is a couple of hours in the evening.  If you do not mind, please then head to the bar and start having some of the delicious Margaritas and Martinis that they do offer.  Otherwise, you can put your name down and come back later.  Or, if you do not want to wait, then you know what else you can do.  Maybe lunch might be a better idea for you.

dscn4866

If you arrive right at Noon you might find the restaurant looking like some of these photos.  But soon enough it will be crowded.  Originally, Agave was pretty small then an addition has given them more seating which is great.

dscn4861

dscn4860

So the other night when Sharon and I arrived for a little Mexican fare, we were surprised that our wait was only like 20 minutes.  We sat looking at the gorgeous desserts…wondering if their famous Coconut Cake would be our choice for dessert.  Or, Pot de Creme or Flan.

dscn6259

I do have my favorites.  I started with their Mexican Chili.  I truly love it.  I don’t know if it is because it is made with beef tenderloin or not, but the flavor is so good.  A rich broth, topped with queso fresco and a side of warm tortillas.  On chilly night, it is perfect and pretty filling, as well.

dscn1418

Their Mango and Avocado Salad is also a must have if you like something a littler lighter.  The mango and avocado is in a bed of bib lettuce, topped with bacon, queso fresco, pine nuts and a creamy pine nut lime dressing.  Queso Fresco is a crumbled goat cheese.

DSCN1067

Agave has a signature dish called Chiles en Nogada.  It is always on their menu.  I told my friend, Sharon, that she should have it.  This is meat stuffed poblano chiles with cumin, cinnamon and azafran.  A drizzle of a nut sauce with an addition of rice and beans.

dscn6257

These Chiles en Nogada is a sophisticaded dish most popular during Mexican Independence festivities.  It incorporates the green, white, and red ingredients just like the colors of the Mexican flag.

A poblano pepper is a mild chile pepper from the State of Puebla in Mexico.  When it is dried out is is called Ancho Chile.  It is a most popular pepper grown in Mexico.  The dish above has a light sweetness to it, perhaps the outcome of the combination of ingredients.  Very good indeed.

We decided on the Coconut Cake for dessert but I had a reason for ordering it.  First of all I have always heard that it is so good.  I am not too much of a coconut cake fan but I wanted to compare it to another coconut cake that people raved about served at the Peninsula Grill in Charleston, South Carolina.

dscn6261

Last February while in Charleston everyone said we needed to try the cake at the Peninsula Grill. They said it so much that we made reservations.  Great entrees, I posted on this website, and then came dessert time.  This cake has 12 layers and they have been making it since 1997.  There is even a trademark as Peninsula Grill Ultimate Coconut Cake.  It weighs 12 lbs., and you can order it and be sent to you FedEx.  Every night you take a glimpse at tables and for dessert you will find the customers do order it a lot.  Here is a photo of my piece of cake.  It reminded me of a Smith Island Cake.

dscn3695

Agave’s Coconut Cake came to the table and it was huge.  And we, actually, ate it all.

DSCN1069

Having had those two magnificent cakes I can tell you that I do prefer to have the individual layers on a cake, but the Agave’s version was definitely, more moist.  I am probably not the best person to review a Coconut Cake, since I do like more tarts than cakes, but all I can tell you is that they were dense and full of flavor.  Next time at Agave’s try it and if by chance you are visiting Historic Charleston, check it out there, as well.  You decide.

Now, a lemon tart….love it!!  The photo of the lemon tart is from the second dessert we had at the Peninsula Grill in Charleston.

Historic Lewes Eats!! Nectar, Cafe, Juice Bar, Restaurant, Lewes, Delaware, Open for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches

dscn4393

If you are a resident of Lewes, you will probably be using your bike as a way to get around the Historic District.  Debbie and I did not do that….we were probably going to take some leftovers home. Our destination on this gorgeous evening in Lewes was Nectar.  This is the second anniversary for Nectar and Sara McKewon, Proprietor, has done an outstanding job in keeping the restaurant fresh, delicious, and comfortable.

dscn4420

The location is 111 Neils Alley in Historic Lewes.  Tel. 302-645-5842.  It opens from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.  It closes on Tuesdays.  Nectar is known for its amazing juices.  You can make a selection of available ones or you can customize your own.

dscn4402

Stepping into Nectar you feel immediately at home.  That has not changed since Sara opened 2 years ago.  Debbie and I arrived early in order to be able to take photos.  Take a peek….look how pretty it is.

dscn4401

dscn4395

dscn4399

Just until a week or so ago, Nectar was only open for breakfast and lunch.  The addition of dinner had us all excited.  So, here is what Debbie and I had.

Starting with a Fresh Fruit Mimosa and Kale Chips.  I have done my own kale chips at home.  These were all crunchy, with beautiful color.

dscn4408

Continued on our grazing mood….PB & J Meatballs.  The peanut sauce was awesome.  Pick them up with your hands or just be prim and proper and use your fork and knife.

dscn4409

Our next dish was the Cauliflower “Steak” –  This is a Vegan Entree.  So good, I cannot wait to have it again.  The cauliflower is both roasted in the oven and finished in the frying pan.  Served over rice pilaf with romesco sauce and topped with olives, capers and roasted tomato.  Romesco sauce is a nut and red pepper base sauce that originated in the area of Tarragona in northeastern Spain.

dscn4411

I love roasted/baked chicken.  So far in my travels, I have found a great one in Delray Beach, Florida, another on Ashford Avenue in Condado, Puerto Rico, and this Dogfish 60Min Baked Chicken at Nectar is out of this world.  It is a 1/2 chicken baked in Dogfish Head beer with honey mustard glaze.  Served with mac n cheeese and coleslaw.

dscn4410

Catch of the Day in Parchment was Monkfish…Steamed in parchment with lemon, capers, and dill.  Rice pilaf and vegetables on the side….moist, well seasoned and glad I ordered it.

dscn4413

So, which one did we choose for our sweet ending?  The Lemon Meringue Cheesecake or the Banana Fosters Pie? All desserts are made in-house.

dscn4396dscn4397

The Lemon Meringue Cheesecake won!!  It was sweet but not overly so…..great lemon flavor.

dscn4416

Hope you stop by Nectar.  Let me know what you think.  I am writing this post a few hours after our dinner.  I think everything we tried was so appealing because the dishes were so simple, colorful and tasted so fresh. Keep up the good work, Sara.  You and your staff made our evening tonight.

The beaches are ready for the season and so are all of us that call Coastal Delaware home!!  Talk to you later.

Destination? Nectar, Cafe, Juice Bar, Historic Lewes, Delaware, Opens Every Day, Breakfast, Lunch, Delaware Beaches

dscn9409

A one year anniversary….hard to believe it, but Sara McKewon, proprietor of Nectar, has been busy giving customers some delicious juices, breakfast, and lunch.  Nectar is located at 111 Neils Alley in Historic Lewes, Delaware.  It opens every day from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.  Tel. 302-645-5842

Step into Nectar and get a feeling of comfort….Customers can take a seat at the bar, relax on the sofa, or grab a table in the back.

dscn9423

dscn9427

Consistently good, with attentive service and reasonable prices. Passing by the homemade baked goods….they looked so enticing.  Guess what?  We resisted.

dscn9414

dscn9415

Jody and I got together and started with a couple of juices.

dscn9425

On the left of the photos is Heavy Metal Detox.  This juice had cilantro, flaxeed, lemon, lime, and apple.  It contained natural chelators that flush heavy metals such as mercury from the body.  On the right, Morning After….Lemon, ginger, apple, spinach, kale and pineapple.  A hangover cure to relieve nausea, stabilize blood sugars and balance pH.

If you love cilantro, try the Heavy Metal Detox.  And if you like ginger then Morning After will be a winner.

dscn9436

We actually chose traditional breakfasts:

My omelette with mushrooms and spinach was exactly what I needed.  The side dish?  Sweet potatoes.

dscn9440

Jody’s eggs….bacon and fresh fruit.

dscn9441

Reviewing a restaurant can be tricky.  The writer tells you that you are going to love it.  But, in reality it is a very personal opinion.  Nectar has a little of everything for every taste.  Wholesome, fresh food.   And, who wouldn’t want that?

So, stop by and let me know what you think.

Agave, Lewes, Restaurant, Mexican Cuisine, Delaware Beaches…No Waiting Tonight!!!

dscn0241

As we sat in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, eating oysters and steamed clams….it was early in the evening.  I figured tonight would be a good night to visit Agave.  I cannot imagine they would have a line.  Everyone would be at the Rehoboth Beach Christmas Parade.  So, we took off for Lewes.  And, I was right.

dscn0247

Lewes, Delaware was quiet; a few cars parked on Second Street.  Agave is located at 1376 2nd St. in Downtown Historic Lewes.  They do not take reservations, but you can put your name down and they will call you if the line is long, which usually is.  Their tel. is 302-645-1232.  They open for lunch and dinner.  At this time of the year, they close on Monday.

dscn0239dscn0240

Agave is a success in Lewes.  The food is always good, ample portions, and great prices.  Great drinks, as well!!

My cousin is visiting for a few days.  He needed to try the Avocado Cilantro Tequilatini.  Fresh avocados; it takes a while to make.  It is soooo smooth.  He kept saying “que rico”.

dscn0242

Kira was our server and she suggested a trio of the guacamole sampler.  One with shrimp, one with pine nuts and goat cheese and the other with pumpkin seeds.  A generous portion of the tree of them.  Very good.

dscn0243

I decided on their traditional chicken tamale.  I have had it before and if you like tamales, then, I think this one will be a winner for you.  Served with rice, black beans and corn bread.

dscn0246

My cousin ordered the Steak Chili which is always so consistently delicious.  He was too fast…no picture this time.

Doggie bags were ordered….I think it was time to go.  This post was short and to the point.

A look at Santa’s House in Lewes…what a quaint, beautiful town!!  See you!

Destination? Delaware Beaches, Lewes, Black Friday, Cafe Azafran, Lunch, Restaurant, Review, Mediterranean Cuisine

So far so good…the weather has been amazing.  Lewes, Delaware looked beautiful on Thanksgiving Day as I drove around this quaint town.  It was quiet; the end of the day.  A drive through Pilottown Rd. took me towards the Lewes Boat Ramp.

dscn9971

Then, back to town, the views were, really, so gorgeous.  Crisp colors; the marshes giving this part of town a serenity, which was perfect on Thanksgiving Day.

Black Friday….some of us say, we have not seen this many people at the Delaware Beaches in years.  Don’t know if it was the forecast or, people just wanting to get out of town.

I love Agave.  Located at 137 2nd St. in Downtown Lewes, it is a Mexican restaurant and tequila bar. Tel. 302-645-1232.  That it is popular, is an understatement.  No reservations; I am always complaining.  The wait too long.  Well, guess what?  Today, I was doing what everyone else in Lewes had found out.  Agave certificates were going to be sold today.  Bring your “dinero” and double the dollar amount.  So, I brought $200 and I got $400 worth.   Yes!!  That was my Black Friday deal.  If I had known earlier, I would have told you.  I only found out today, but I believe this is not the first year.  Stay tuned for next year.

dscn0006

dscn0007

The certificates could be bought in increments of $10.  I got mine all in 10’s.  They cannot carry a balance.  Dine in only.  Not for carryout.  Can use as many as necessary in one visit.  Cannot be used for merchandise, or for happy hour specials.  Could not be used on Black Friday.  And, last, but not least, cannot be used for gratuity.

dscn0017

I waited for about 1 1/2 hours….worth the wait.  Now I will have to see when will I be able to get into Agave.  Don’t worry, a post will, definitely, follow.

My sister in law was patiently waiting for me, shopping around Lewes.  We decided to have lunch at Cafe Azafran.  My Agave certificates were safely in my bag.  Cafe Azafran has been in Lewes for many years.  It is a Mediterranean Cafe located at 109 Market St.  Tel. 302-644-4446.  Another location has been in Downtown Rehoboth Beach for a few years.  Website?  http://www.cafeazafran.com.

dscn0014

It is casual. Seating available inside or at the side porch.  Today it was the perfect day.  The heaters were hardly needed.

dscn0013

An order of their vegetable soup, accompanied with bread.  Great consistency, not salty; light.

dscn0008

An order of the Mediterranean Platter – Serrano ham, roasted peppers, romesco, olive tapenade, artichoke hearts, Manchego & goat cheese with warm baguette.  Gorgeous colors were so welcomed. Delicious.

dscn0010

The Special Panini was ordered – Ham, asparagus, melted brie, onions, accompanied with pasta salad.  The brie and ham, always a very nice combination.

dscn0012

That’s all for… Black Friday!!  Have a good one!

Bethany Blues Lewes, Restaurant, Gluten Free Entrees, Bar, Lewes, Live Entertainment, Sydney’s Music Revival, Davina and The Vagabonds, Friday, 11/9, Down2Rock, Saturday, 11/10, 8:30 p.m.

dscn8999

You get it all in one place; food, spirits, live entertainment, great atmosphere, kick a heel or two….Bethany Blues Lewes is located at 18385 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1), Lewes, Delaware 19958.  Tel. 302-644-2500.  Website? http://www.bethanyblues.com.  It is open year-round.

dscn8996

The other night we decided we were in the mood for ribs.  Bethany Blues is known for their succulent ribs, perfectly smoked.  The restaurant is, actually, a good size.  But, I like to sit in the bar area.  There are some booths and tall table available.  It is pretty lively on this side of the restaurant.  If you do prefer a quieter atmosphere, then ask to be seated on the other side.

dscn8983

Bethany Blues is one of the restaurants in our Delaware Beaches where people with food allergies can eat without worries.  The restaurant takes guests’ food allergies very seriously and tries to accommodate dietary restrictions as best as they can.

If you have a food allergy, please mention it to your server.  In our case, it is a gluten allergy.  The manager will come to the table to explain the menu and tell you what you can and cannot eat.  Believe me, they have plenty of entrees and sides, including barbecue sauces.

Our entrees and sides were all gluten free.  This is what we had.

To start we had their Crispy Pork Belly.  A few slices of in house, cured and smoked pork belly, served with their apple cider dipping sauce.  I usually order this appetizer.  I love the combination of flavors.

dscn8987

To tell you the truth, I had never had the St. Louis Ribs.  Our server recommended them and I think they will be my new rib addiction.  They had a house brown sugar rub, then smoked for hours.  Fantastic flavor.  My dish was called the Delmarva Duo because it had chicken, smoked and seasoned, then a bit of their house sauce was added.  The chicken was crispy and very moist.  My sides were the cucumber and onion salad and a very “hot” jalapeno slaw.  Very hot indeed.

dscn8992

An entree of half rack of Baby Backs, with sides of garlic mashed potatoes and the cucumber and onion salad.  Also, very good.

dscn8989

No dessert was necessary….we did ask for a doggy bag.  Guess what?  Bethany Blues Lewes is open for lunch.

dscn8985

Live Entertainment at Bethany Blues Lewes:

Year round, Sydney’s Music Revival presents local and nationally recognized musicians.  Do you remember when she had Sydney’s in Downtown Rehoboth Beach?  If you do, then, you have been coming to the Delaware Beaches for a long time.  It was the place to go for live entertainment, and good food.

Entertainment at Bethany Blues at this time of the year starts at 8:30 p.m.

Friday, 11/9 – Top Notch Honky Tonk Comes to Bethany Blues – Something special has happened to Davina and The Vagabonds since their last appearance at Bethany Blues in Lewes.  As a last minute substitute for John Mayer at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival last Spring, the band has been in huge demand both, nationally and internationally.

Two things distinguish this fine band; the first being leader, Davina Sower’s big nostalgic soul voice.  Think of a meld of Bessie Smith, Etta James, Alberta Adams and Amy Winehouse, and you come close to understanding what Davina is all about.  The other is the band’s crisp, clean sound…just piano, upright bass, trombone, trumpet, and drums.

Listening to Davina and The Vagabonds is like stepping into a wondrous musical time machine.  They have the panache and superlative musicianship to recreate the retro sound and ageless appeal of golden age Americana in high-definition reality.  Davina beckons an age when bad girls wore red lipstick and pin curls.   More info?  You can visit Bethany Blues’ website above mentioned or http://www.davinaandthevagabonds.com.

Saturday, 11/10 – Down2Rock will be performing live at Bethany Blues.  Check their website at http://www.reverbnation.com/down2rock.

Note:  Musicians interested in bookings should contact Sydney Arzt at artsinfo.sydney@gmail.com.

It looks like there is a beautiful week-end ahead at the Delaware Beaches…have a great time.  Talk to you later.

Fish On!, Bar, Grill, Lewes, Delaware, Restaurant, Matt Haley’s Restaurants, SoDel Concepts, Outdoor Dining, Review, Delaware Beaches

dscn5815

Eating is not merely a material pleasure.  Eating well gives a spectacular joy to life and contributes immensely to goodwill and happy companionship.  It is of great importance to the morale.   e. schiaparelli

This post is reviewing Fish On! twice in one week!!

It was Sunday night when a friend came over to visit.  I was probably on a lazy kind of mood.  A crowded and hot week-end at the Delaware Beaches.  Plain and simple; I did not feel like cooking.  So, I chose Fish On!  We are so lucky to have all these wonderful restaurants in our beaches.  I have to hand it to you, Chefs, because you are doing a great job in keeping all of us interested in your culinary surprises.

Fish On is part of the SoDel Concepts group of restaurants that extend up and down our coastal beaches.  Owner and Executive Chef is Matt Haley. It is located at 17300 North Village Main Blvd., Villages of Five Points, Lewes, Delaware 19958.  Tel. 302-645-9790.  Website?  http://www.fishon.bz

dscn5926

Fish On! does not take reservations.  That is not bothering me anymore.  I am eating late this summer.  Love having the restaurants almost all to myself at that time.  Fish On! has plenty of parking.  The restaurant offers outdoor dining.  So, on a beautiful Delmarva night, please take advantage of a pretty nice setting.  Eating outdoors is the best.

dscn5833

On Sunday evening the restaurant was comfortably crowded when we arrived.  Not soon afterwards, just a few having a leisure coffee and desert.

dscn5831

Our server was Stefana.  I have to tell you that she was so pleasant; knew the menu well.  Gluten free awareness?  Oh yes, she was very well aware of the allergy.

Bread was brought to the table.  Even though the bread looked simple, it was a little bit sweet; not overly so.  It is baked daily in-house.

dscn5822

I decided to have their Charred Asparagus Soup.  It was creamy, full of flavor, with a creme fraiche and basil oil.

dscn5819

Two orders of Pan Seared Halibut, with grilled peach, black bean and corn salsa, cumin and paprika roasted potatoes.  Gluten Free!!  Got great reviews from my fellow diners.

dscn5827

I decided to go with the Seared Seabass, with summer squash and sweet potato ribbons, and a lemon herb gremolata.  It melted in your mouth, the vegetables were perfectly cooked.  The picture does not lie.  It looked and tasted that good.

dscn5829

Perfectly satisfied, we just had some coffee.

Tuesday evening.  Quiet after the hectic week-end.  You could see that the traffic was taking it easy.  Once again, we decided to go to Fish On!  The scallops were calling my husband.

Fish On! was a little more subdued; we also went pretty late.

dscn5817

My choice was the Bean, Corn, and Chicken Soup.  It was “brothy”, light and it had been cooked with jalapenos, so there was a nice kick to it.  Loved it.

dscn5929

Fish Tacos for my next entree. Shaved brussels sprouts, pickled onions, corn tortillas.  Guess what?  I learned something new.  The fish was called swai.  I had never heard of it.  It is pronounced sweye.  Similar to catfish but with a milder flavor and more delicate texture.  It is from Vietnam.  Even people that do not like fish, tend to really enjoy this very much versatile fish that can be broiled, baked, sauteed, and fried.  My Fish Tacos were delicious and a very healthy portion indeed.

dscn5936

When restaurants are not crowded it is the perfect opportunity to maybe be able to change something on the menu.  Fish On! was more than happy to oblige.

The Scallops were ordered.  They would have arrived accompanied by summer vegetables and a chorizo succotash.  Not sure if the chorizo was gluten free, we decided to replace those with the Roasted Red & Gold Beets; no blue cheese, mustard vinaigrette on the side.  Both were outstanding!!

dscn5932

dscn5930

Please note that restaurants get so busy that many times they can not be substituting one thing for another.  So…ask but be understanding of their situation.

Again, a little chat here or there with Stefana….and until next time.

Fish On! opens 7 days a week at 5:00 p.m.

dscn5830

A Children’s Menu is also available.  Other offerings, besides seafood, are on the menu, as well.

Have a good one!!  ttyl g
