Having lived at the Delaware Beaches for so many years, visiting the local museums, where you can unlock the past so that you can see where we are going, is a must if you are visiting or living, here at the beach.  I know, I know, the beach, restaurants, and shops are probably what you are coming to the beach for…these museums will not take a long time.  You never know, you might be retiring to the Delaware Beaches; low property taxes and tax free shopping!!!

The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society’s mission is “to preserve and showcase artifacts that illustrate the development of our beautiful city by the sea”.

Until March 17h, the exhibit currently on display is “WWII:  Rehoboth Beach” – In Rehoboth there were Coast Guardsmen on horseback, a Civil Air Patrol airfield…the Civil Air Patrol pilots kept our waters safe from the enemy.  There were also blackouts and stage door canteens.  You can view at the Museum the artifacts that help tell the story of a beach town during the war.  A 1940’s kitchen, listen to the music of the Mills Brothers and the Tommy Dorsey Band.  Children visiting the Museum can learn how to send a Morse Code.  And you can grab a recipe for creamed chipped beef on toast!!

Thursday, February 14th – Valentine’s Day Stage Door Canteen, a Valentine’s Day Musical Revue.  The response has been overwhelming, so, instead of holding it at the Rehoboth Museum, it has been moved to Clear Space Theatre located at 20 Baltimore Avenue in downtown Rehoboth Beach,   It will start at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $14 (cash or check only for that night) in honor of the holiday and light refreshments will be served.  A cash bar will be available, as well.  Please call 302-227-7310 to reserve your seat.

This performance concurs with the WWII exhibit on display at the Rehoboth Museum.  Clear Space, http://www.clearspacetheatre.org, will take the audience on a sentimental journey to another era with a presentation of popular wartime songs; Chattanooga Choo-Choo, You’ll Never Know, and I’ll Be Seeing You.

Stage Canteens were special clubs and the guests were the steady stream of GIs headed off to war.  Many were leaving home for the first time and the Canteens offered a welcome opportunity to forget their anxieties, if only for a time, with entertainment, fellowship and a little American spirit.

Top_Secret_Rosies

Friday, March 8th – Documentary, “Top Secret Rosies”, in honor of Women’s History Month in March, at the Rehoboth Beach Museum located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue, by the roundabout.  The documentary will start at 7:00 p.m. in the museum’s Cooper Gallery.  Please note that reservations are required for this event, since the space is limited.  All you have to do is call 302-227-7310 and make the reservation.  Light refreshments will be served.  Free for members of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and $5 donation from non-members.

The film was produced and directed by Leann Erickson.  The film explores, with four of the “Top Secret Rosies” the importance of their role in the Allied successes.  The 4 vastly different women share what it was like as a human computer and how they sometimes worked night, day and night again.  It was up to these women to make sure those in the air and on the battle grounds received the accurate calculations needed to achieve success in hitting their targets.

Have a great day!!  Talk to you later.

The other day someone said to me how much they loved the changes in the seasons.  You are not kidding!!  We have had frigid temperatures, snow, rain, wind, balmy breezes, and all in a matter of a week.  Still, the truth of the matter is that Southern Delaware is lucky to have mild winters.  Lots of people coming to play and stay at the Delaware beaches….you know, low property taxes, tax free shopping, restaurants and the outdoors.

If you are visiting this week-end you have might have to be bold.  You will, definitely, get cold.  It is a week-end festival of sorts with events that get the communities together.  So, this is what’s going on in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Bethany Blues Lewes, Restaurant, Gluten Free Entrees, Bar, Lewes, Live Entertainment, Sydney’s Music Revival, Davina and The Vagabonds, Friday, 11/9, Down2Rock, Saturday, 11/10, 8:30 p.m.

dscn8999

You get it all in one place; food, spirits, live entertainment, great atmosphere, kick a heel or two….Bethany Blues Lewes is located at 18385 Coastal Highway (Rt. 1), Lewes, Delaware 19958.  Tel. 302-644-2500.  Website? http://www.bethanyblues.com.  It is open year-round.

dscn8996

The other night we decided we were in the mood for ribs.  Bethany Blues is known for their succulent ribs, perfectly smoked.  The restaurant is, actually, a good size.  But, I like to sit in the bar area.  There are some booths and tall table available.  It is pretty lively on this side of the restaurant.  If you do prefer a quieter atmosphere, then ask to be seated on the other side.

dscn8983

Bethany Blues is one of the restaurants in our Delaware Beaches where people with food allergies can eat without worries.  The restaurant takes guests’ food allergies very seriously and tries to accommodate dietary restrictions as best as they can.

If you have a food allergy, please mention it to your server.  In our case, it is a gluten allergy.  The manager will come to the table to explain the menu and tell you what you can and cannot eat.  Believe me, they have plenty of entrees and sides, including barbecue sauces.

Our entrees and sides were all gluten free.  This is what we had.

To start we had their Crispy Pork Belly.  A few slices of in house, cured and smoked pork belly, served with their apple cider dipping sauce.  I usually order this appetizer.  I love the combination of flavors.

dscn8987

To tell you the truth, I had never had the St. Louis Ribs.  Our server recommended them and I think they will be my new rib addiction.  They had a house brown sugar rub, then smoked for hours.  Fantastic flavor.  My dish was called the Delmarva Duo because it had chicken, smoked and seasoned, then a bit of their house sauce was added.  The chicken was crispy and very moist.  My sides were the cucumber and onion salad and a very “hot” jalapeno slaw.  Very hot indeed.

dscn8992

An entree of half rack of Baby Backs, with sides of garlic mashed potatoes and the cucumber and onion salad.  Also, very good.

dscn8989

No dessert was necessary….we did ask for a doggy bag.  Guess what?  Bethany Blues Lewes is open for lunch.

Live Entertainment at Bethany Blues Lewes:

Year round, Sydney’s Music Revival presents local and nationally recognized musicians.  Do you remember when she had Sydney’s in Downtown Rehoboth Beach?  If you do, then, you have been coming to the Delaware Beaches for a long time.  It was the place to go for live entertainment, and good food.

Entertainment at Bethany Blues at this time of the year starts at 8:30 p.m.

Friday, 11/9 – Top Notch Honky Tonk Comes to Bethany Blues – Something special has happened to Davina and The Vagabonds since their last appearance at Bethany Blues in Lewes.  As a last minute substitute for John Mayer at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival last Spring, the band has been in huge demand both, nationally and internationally.

Two things distinguish this fine band; the first being leader, Davina Sower’s big nostalgic soul voice.  Think of a meld of Bessie Smith, Etta James, Alberta Adams and Amy Winehouse, and you come close to understanding what Davina is all about.  The other is the band’s crisp, clean sound…just piano, upright bass, trombone, trumpet, and drums.

Listening to Davina and The Vagabonds is like stepping into a wondrous musical time machine.  They have the panache and superlative musicianship to recreate the retro sound and ageless appeal of golden age Americana in high-definition reality.  Davina beckons an age when bad girls wore red lipstick and pin curls.   More info?  You can visit Bethany Blues’ website above mentioned or http://www.davinaandthevagabonds.com.

Saturday, 11/10 – Down2Rock will be performing live at Bethany Blues.  Check their website at http://www.reverbnation.com/down2rock.

Note:  Musicians interested in bookings should contact Sydney Arzt at artsinfo.sydney@gmail.com.

It looks like there is a beautiful week-end ahead at the Delaware Beaches…have a great time.  Talk to you later.

Abbott’s Grill, Restaurant, Milford, American Cuisine, Outdoor Dining, Wine Tastings, Live Entertainment, 4th of July Patio Party, Delaware

dscn5515

I was so glad to finally made it to Abbott’s Grill.  This restaurant, located at 249 NE Front Street, Milford, Delaware, is only about 20 minutes away from Lewes, Rehoboth Beach and Dewey.  It takes no time to get there.  Plus, there is plenty of parking.  You know how important that is at this time of the year.  And, to top it all, their food is excellent.

Telephone?  302-491-6736.  Website?  http://www.abbottsgrill.com.

My friend, Susan, and I arrived for lunch. We had seating options.  Of course we sat outside.  Anytime that is available, I take that opportunity.  I don’t know, for some reason, the food even tastes better.  It is so much more enjoyable.  Their outdoor dining felt comfortable and on fall, winter and spring nights, the fire will be roaring.

dscn5500

Abbotts Grill has a large bar.

dscn5514

dscn5513

It was so nice to see Laura and to meet Kevin and Ryan.

Susan and I proceeded to check the menu and we decided to split their Caprese Salad.  Ryan told us that those were the first local tomatoes of the season.  Just in, from Fifer Farms.  Besides the tomatoes, it also had hand-pulled mozzarella, and the most delicious basil pesto.

dscn5504

Then, Susan chose the Colvine Farm Bison Burger.  Colvine Farm is located in the town of Greenwood, Delaware.  Back on August 6th of 2010, I wrote a post with pictures.  You can go under the Archives and click on that month and scroll down to the day.

dscn5507

The Bison Burger had grilled portobello, smoked onions, applewood smoke bacon, and white cheddar.  Juicy, and cooked to perfection.

I wanted to try something different and what caught my attention was the Groovy Lavash Wrap with hummus, cucumber, tomato, goat cheese, and local greens.  The wrap was so crispy; a nice crunch to it, and warm to the touch.  The rest was perfect on a hot summer day; good combination of flavors.

dscn5510

The cole slaw was so good.  It was sweetened with pineapple juice.  It had a good consistency; one of the best I have had.

Abbott’s Grill opens 7 days a week.  Lost of events and specials every day of the week.

Sunday Brunch with a $5 Fix-It-Your-Way Bloody Mary Bar.  9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. There is a la carte menu, $3 Mimosas, Pancakes, Eggs Benedict, Crepes, Omelettes and more.

Mondays is $6 Burger Night!!

Tuesdays is Team Trivia.

Wednesday is 1/2 price bottles of select wine.

Thursday is $5 “Tinis”.

Friday and Saturday is Live Music and DJs!!

dscn5498

4th of July Patio Party on Wednesday, 7/4!!  From 5:00 p.m. ’till…  $4 Drinks, $4 Grill Menu, Live Entertainment.

July 14th is Bastilles Day.  Abbott’s Grill Loves Wine and is celebrating with Bernie’s Wine Tastings.  There will be an expanded tasting with lunch on the 14th from 12 – 2 p.m.  $35/person.

Note:  My server was great.  I had known her from another restaurant in Rehoboth years ago…I have to apologize, but the name escapes me as of this writing.  She was great, told me how to make my own balsamic reduction and now I am hooked.

Also, please note that Abbott’s Grill can handle customers with gluten allergies.

Have a Good One!!  Thanks !!
