Dewey Beach Eats!, IVY, Restaurant, Bar, Wedding Venue, Dewey Beach Life, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn6629

This was going to be the first time I was going to IVY even though they have been in business for a few years.  IVY is part of the family of Dewey Beach Life.  These are:  Rusty Rudder, Bottle & Cork, Jimmy’s Grille Dewey, Northbeach, Outlet Liquors, and Dewey Beach Liquors.  Both IVY and Northbeach are wedding venues, as well.  More info?  Please visit http://www.deweybeachlife.com.

dscn6632

IVY is located at Dagsworthy St. & The Bay in the heart of Dewey Beach.  Tel. 302-227-9292.  The Manager is Brooke Sterling and the Executive Chef is Aileen Delario.  Reservations are accepted and there is parking, as well.  So far so good, right?

dscn6638

To tell you the truth, I had forgotten what a fantastic view of the Bay this restaurant has.  We arrived for a 7:30 p.m. reservation.  There would be 6 of us for dinner.

dscn6631

The views from the inside are towards the Bay.  The bar is indoors and there are plenty of tables and seating available.  Later in the evening the music and dancing would begin.

Al fresco dining with friends…there was talk, laughter and merriment.  And of course, photo opportunities as the sun started to set.

Does food relly have more flavor when eating it in the open air?  Oh, I definitely think so.  At IVY the setting is beautiful and the sunsets are spectacular.

dscn6640

All you have to do is take a seat, then take a sip of a luxurious cocktail, and finally take a taste of their unique offerings.

If you decide to eat al fresco remember that you will be on their beach, so wear your comfortable shoes or sandals.

The menu was divided into Little Bites, Cool and Leafy, Big Bites….And then…dessert.  The Little Bites are great for trying different things tapas style.

Our table ordered a little bit of eveything.

From the Little Bites:

The Portabella Pate with truffles, cherry, and ginger.

dscn6646

The Godzilla Shrimp…colossal tempura’d shrimp with seaweed, wasabi and ginger.

dscn6647

The Hamburger Slider….even though it was a slider it was a generous portion.

dscn6654

The Herb Crepe was presented beautifully.  It had crab and shrimp and lemon aioli.  This was a cold dish.  My fellow diners that ordered it liked it but would have preferred it warm.  Just a suggestion.

dscn6653

From the Cool and Leafy, a Bib Lettuce Salad with bell, tomato, pickled red onion, pine nuts with an Old Bay vinaigrette.  It was light and it was also large enough for sharing.

dscn6648

Big Bites…these were traditional size entrees.

Crab Cake…Jumbo lump, fresh lemon herb tarter, corn and tomato saute.

dscn6651

Ratatouille…for those vegetarian ones and perfect at this time of the year with so many veggies available….tomato, squash, eggplant, zucchini, thyme and chevre polenta.

dscn6655

The Halibut with cauliflower, Madras broth, coconut lime, and microgreens.  Very light and mild.

dscn6650

The Scottish Salmon had a spicy jamaican jerk, tamarind glaze over rum flamed pilaf.  Loved it!!

dscn6649

No dessert was ordered because we were perfectly satisfied…another time.

Talk to you later…and in the meantime enjoy the sunset!!

“There comes a moment on a journey when something sweet, something irresistible and charming as wine raised to thirsty lips wells up the traveller’s being.”  patrick macgill

“Cookery is not chemistry.  It is an art.  It requires instinct and taste rather than exact measurements.”  marcel boulestin

With that in mind and Southern Delaware as a journey my post begins….

In 2013 the MidAtlantic Wine + Food Festival began as an independent festival. It featured international vintners and chefs in collaboration with Delaware’s local talent. The festival would bring tourism to Delaware and also would increase awareness of this small state’s cultural assets.

The MidAtlantic Wine + Food Festival is a Delaware nonprofit.  A designted portion of this year’s festival proceeds will benefit 5 arts related beneficiaries throughout Delaware.  These are: CAMP Rehoboth, Christina Cultural Arts Center, Joshua M. Freeman Foundation, which operates the Freeman Stage in Fenwick Island, OperaDelaware, and the Smyrna-Clayton Heritage Association, which operates the historic Smyrna Opera House.

dscn9548

You have an open invitation to participate in as many events as you want.  All you have to do is visit htt://www.mawff.org.

The website has all the info. you will need and more.  It is very well detailed.  You can buy tickets through the website, as well.

This is a statewide event…..Southern Delaware is a culinary destination and the events coming to the Delaware Beaches are not to be missed.  So, what’s going on?

Tom Mortimer, La Cadeau, Oregon – Tom Mortimer and his wife, Deb, are the proprietors of Le Cadeau Vineyard. They manage the farming and development of the vineyard, the winemaking team, and the marketing of Le Cadeau to top restaurants and retailers in the U.S., Canada, Germany, and Sweden.  Le Cadeau Vineyard specializes in estate-grown Pinot Noir from the Chehalem Mountains AVA of Oregon’s Willamette Valley.

Jon Staenberg, Hand of God Wines, Argentina – Jon Staenberg and Santiago Achaval, one-time classmates at Stanford Business School, now partner in Hand of God wines in Mendoza, Argentina. Jon will pour from the inaugural vintages of this new winery, as well as wines from Achaval Ferrer.  Wine Advocate awarded 92 points to one of the wines from Hand of God.  Achaval Ferrer boasts four of the five highest-rated wines from Argentina, (receiving 99s and 98s) from Wine Spectator, and Achaval Ferrer is ranked the highest-rated Argentine wine to date by The Wine Advocate.

Destination? Dewey Beach, Delaware, Sunny Days, Blue Skies, Rusty Rudder Opens Season 2014….Chili Cookoff!!, Event, Free, For the Whole Family, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn9005

It was 1979 when the Rusty Rudder opened its doors.  It was the place to go and be seen.  Open air decks, plenty of music, food, and drinks….the summers came and went and the Rusty Rudder then became an institution.  Guess what? It still is.  The setting is beautiful.

dscn9038

Rusty Rudder is located at 113 Dickinson Street and the Bay.  The Atlantic Ocean is on one side and the Bay is on the other, making Dewey Beach a playground for adults day and night and the best of both worlds for the young ones.  A lot of work has been done inside just for the new season ahead.  For more info., please visit http://www.rustyrudderdewey.com.  Or, call tel. 302-227-3888.

dscn9029

Arrive by car and you will find plenty of parking available; otherwise come by boat and there are plenty of slips, as well.

dscn9034

Rusty Rudder was opening on Saturday, 4/12, and what a gorgeous day this coastal town had.  Plenty of shorts and flip-flops, local attire found in Dewey.  The opening of Rusty Rudder brought numerous customers, including Shelley, Mrs. Levinson and myself.  There was a Chili Cookoff and we were ready to try and vote for the best.

dscn9008

Surrounding the Rusty Rudder’s deck we found restaurants and individuals that were set up with their prize chili.  The conversations heard were, tasty, spicy, ground beef vs. steak chili….You went around sampling all of them.  By the time you were finished, a bowl of chili was probably devoured.

dscn9011

Lisa Abel’s Chili was very good.  A traditional taste full of flavor…she was the winner.

One of my favorites was prepared by Jimmy’s Grille.  It was a white chicken chili.  It really was good with just the right seasonings.

dscn9020

dscn9021

Ivy had a pretty good one too.  Those I have mentioned were my top picks, but to be honest, I did not try them all.

dscn9024

Big Hat No Cattle was starting to play….entertainment for everyone.  They got the crowds going and some of us were able to dance the chili off.

dscn9025

dscn9018

A big shout to the Rusty Rudder for sponsoring the table full of information on Alzheimer’s.  A devastating disease in many families causing so much despair.  For more info. on the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease, please visit http://www.alz.org/10signs.  Save the Date:  “I Walk to End Alzheimer’s” It will be in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware on Saturday, October 4th.  And, on October 18th, the walk will be in Wilmington, Delaware.  Please call 800-272-3900, or visit http://www.alz.org/desjsepa.

Beach House Dewey, Hotel, Dewey Beach, Delaware, Grand Opening…In the heart of Dewey Beach, Ocean Block, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn3911

Party at the Beach House!!…That’s the atmosphere I found today as I stopped by to check the new Beach House Dewey, which opened to a complete sold out week-end on Memorial.

dscn3901dscn3881

Dewey Beach has been for years a magnet for partygoers in the summer.  But, Dewey is also a very popular family resort.  It has a total casual atmosphere, which is why you really come to the beach.  Dewey has wide, sandy beaches….also, plenty of lodging accommodations.  Restaurants galore, bars, and live music.

And Dewey Beach has reason to boast…last year is was among the top 12 ranked beaches in the U.S. for water quality!!

dscn3898

Beach House Dewey is located at 1710 Highway One (ocean block) in Dewey Beach.  Tel. 302-227-4000.  Website? http://www.beachhousedewey.com.  The hotel used to be the Sand Palace.  New owners, The Berstein Companies, one of Washington, D.C.’s oldest real estate development, investment, and hotel management organizations.  A massive renovation has taken place to make Beach House Dewey the new coolest and most affordable place to stay in Dewey Beach.

dscn3897

Amanda Ponko was kind enough to invite me to check out the hotel.  So here is what I found out.

Beach House Dewey is within walking distance to all of Dewey Beach.  On the ocean block, the Atlantic Ocean, and just after crossing Highway One, the Rehoboth Bay.  Both are playgrounds for the young and the young at heart.

dscn3903dscn3902

There are 47 rooms and one suite.  Plenty of parking.  A very cheerful and modern Front Destk.

dscn3899

dscn3900

There is a shaded back patio and pool.  They will be planning plenty of activities for relaxing and socializing.

dscn3885

All the rooms have modern amenities, including in-room refrigerators, microwaves flat-screen HD televisions and wireless internet.

This double room was bright and smart looking.

dscn3882

I was able to see their only expansive suite; the Galli Suite.  It is very spacious with a detached, modern and comfortable sitting room.  There are views of both, the ocean and bay.

dscn3893

dscn3886

dscn3887

This sitting room, also has a connecting door to another guest room, in case you were with a larger family.

dscn3890

dscn3891

And if you don’t want to walk, or would like to take a trip to Rehoboth Beach, the Jolly Trolley stops steps from Beach House Dewey.

dscn3904

Have fun!!  The Summer of 2013 is here!!
