The Quiet Resort of Bethany Beach, Delaware, was really quiet then. On Labor Day, those streets were rolled up. Bethany did not have, on those early days, a pharmacy…it was a dry town. Only one grocery store. That’s how small it was.
During the winter there were only 500 of us living there. So one summer, former Bethany Beach Councilman, Moss Wagner, and others in town like Ken Cloud, who owned Clouds, a children’s store, decided that a proper burial would be most appropriate. A sending away the summer….not to forget it but to remember it.
Gather friends…or the ones that were left in town and celebrate!! Share your memories, even shed a few tears…..dress up!
My photos here are from September of 1993.
Moss is at the head of the funeral. You can see it says R.I.P. Summer ’93.
The Jazz Funeral was usually around 4:30 p.m. My friend, Sharon, and I would try to make it every year. Then, we would bring our families to enjoy family entertainment, including the ritual of the lifeguards running towards the water for one last swim.
This photo is also from September, 1993. If you look closely, the lifeguards are naked. The bathing suits are around their necks. Usually, the girls did not take the suits off, but at times they would show a little breast. If you notice on the photo, people are walking on the beach….nobody is looking….the most natural thing in the world. Those were the good times…haha.
This Labor Day Week-End, it is a bit different. On Friday, 8/29, there is a Silent Auction to be held at Bethany Blues at 6 N. Pennsylvania Avenue from 3 – 4:45 p.m. It is a fundraising event for the Sussex Country Big Brothers and Sisters.
And, on Monday, Labor Day, at 5:30 p.m. the Jazz Funeral will start on the Boardwalk. It is big, it is fun, and it is still family entertainment. I am not sure if they do some sort of swimming….it would be with clothes on, believe me.
Anyway, everyone is invited to participate. We did have a beautiful summer, so why not remember it in this special way. Have fun. Cry your heart out, will you?
This sleepy little town has come a long way….

Boy that was good!! Yum! I am referring to my Chilled Honeydew Cucumber & Avocado Soup. It had pureed cucumber, avocado, melon, vegetable stock, and rice wine vinegar. It was also topped with a herb and citrus creme fraiche and pumpkin seeds. This particular soup was gluten free and vegetarian.
I was going to the Post Office in Bethany Beach when I saw that 14 Global was open for lunch. Surprise, surprise….I was hungry and it was well past lunch time. 14 Global is located at 14 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Bethany Beach, DE 19930. Tel. 302-616-1035. Website? http://www.14global.com.
Of course, I had to go in…I was not the only one that was hungry. One of my “Usual Suspects” was passing by and pretty soon she was also ordering lunch. 14 Global is very pretty inside. The restaurant is nicely appointed with beautiful woods, utilizing the maximum space available.
14 Global is comfortable and the set-up is conducive to friendly chat. A bar is also available for just having a few drinks, or even sitting down for lunch or dinner.
The restaurant opens for lunch Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Global Plates are not offered for lunch, but believe me there is plenty on the lunch menu to choose from. No lunch on Wednesday. Hours for lunch are 11:30 until 2:00 p.m. Dinner is offered from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. every day.
Reservations are taken for their early seating…5 p.m. – 6 p.m. only. But, if you do happen to have a large party of 8 or more, please call for reservation availability and for later seating, as well.
14 Global offers gluten free, and vegetarian items. And, there is also a Kids’ Menu.
Debbie ordered their Baywater Micro Green Salad with a blackberry balsamic reduction, a variety of mini greens, shaved candy striped beets, red onion, angel peach, avocado, Rogue blue cheese, and candied walnuts.
And, she also ordered the Grilled Asparagus & Prosciutto with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, lemon juice, and cracked pepper.
Besides the soup I raved about on the first sentence of this post, I also ordered their Baywater Micro Green Salad, except that I topped it with a softshell crab….one of my favorite crabs. It had a very light breading and flash fried….perfectly seasoned.
No dessert was needed….we told our served, which by the way was very attentive, that we were on diets…..he did say we looked good!
A rainy afternoon….Summer 2014 continues to bring gorgeous weather on the week-ends!! Have a good one!

Prior to the early 50’s, it took some time to get to Bethany Beach. There was no railroad connection. Until 1920, visitors to this coastal town would have to take a steamer…the Atlantic, across Rehoboth Bay to Ocean View and then travel by horsedrawn carriage to Bethany.
On Friday, I could not find parking in Bethany. That’s the norm during the summer months. All the construction work on the streets was finished…amazing job.
Bethany is considered to be a quiet resort, and during the winter months, it actually is…but Summer 2014 is here….some came in bikes too!!
One the Bethany Beach’s trolleys was waiting. At only $.25 per ride, it is the best deal in town. For the schedule and more info., please visit http://www.townofbethanybeach.com.
All is in place for a great season ahead:
The beach looked so inviting…..I heard this little boy said: “I am so ready, I am going in the ocean.” Maybe the water is not warm enough yet…soon, though.
Already visitors were occupying the Boardwalk’s benches….great place to people watch.
The center of Downtown Bethany Beach is the Bandstand. Entertainment schedule can be found on the above mentioned website.
Then, I stopped for a moment…..it was the smells, French fries, and salt air. Love living at the beach!

Known for having a family atmosphere Bethany Beach is also known as The Quiet Resort. All summer long this Delaware resort is super busy….just try to find parking during the height of the season. Visitors to Bethany Beach know that when they get to Bethany they are on vacation….away from it all. It is a casual town…so, from the beach to restaurants is very laid back.
Ride the Bethany Beach Trolley….it is the best deal in town. Only $.25 each way. For more info., please visit http://www.townofbethanybeach.com, or call 302-539-8011. It operates from 9:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. Just remember that the driver does not make change. You can flag down the trolley anywhere along the route for pickup or discharge, except on Rt. 26. I know that it is December, that it is winter…..that Bethany Beach, Delaware, is the Quiet Resort and the sidewalks should be rolled up until next summer….But, guess what? A gorgeous day at the Delaware Beaches brought us 58 degrees! Bethany Beach was crowded with visitors playing in the sand and enjoying one beautiful day in Delmarva.
The Boardwalk is the life of this coastal town and a run to benefit First Responders was taking place. And, today the crowds gathered to see who the winners were.
It was for a good cause…First Responders!!

Destination? Bethany Beach, Delaware….the 35th Annual Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival is taking place until 5 p.m. Saturday, 9/7. The Boardwalk and surroundings streets become every year the place to browse, shop and enjoy the beginning of the Second Season at the Delaware Beaches.
But when that is all finished, then, where to dine in Bethany Beach?
Well, let me tell you about it. Patsy’s Restaurant is located at 121 Campbell Place on the second block from the ocean, right near the Bethany Beach Post Office. Tel. 302-537-2433. Website? http://www.patsysgourmet.com. No reservations; first come, first served. We are entering the Second Season at the Delaware Beaches, so please call in advance to make sure that they are open on the day you want to dine.
Patsy’s has indoor and outdoor dining. We decided to sit outdoors. It was the perfect evening; just with family.
The music, definitely, Caribbean with a Key West beat!
The food is fresh, and their offerings change constantly depending on the season. Very gluten free friendly…just ask them. They will be able to modify some of the dishes and there is always plenty of fresh seafood.
This is what we enjoyed:
For starters a Gazpacho. Gazpacho is made so many different ways. At Patsy’s the Gazpacho has plenty of veggies in a broth that also has a very nice kick to it.
The Grilled Peaches with herb goat cheese and prosciutto were beautiful and delicious. Local peaches, by the way.
Grilled Mahi on corn, squash, and green bean succotash with a cherry tomato salad and pesto had a diversed combination of flavors. Very much liked.
The Grilled Tuna was another choice not to be missed…on purple sticky rice cake with napa cabbage slaw and miso mustard sauce.
Love softshells and Patsy’s were cornmeal crusted with grilled corn, black bean salad, red cabbage slaw and cilantro aioli.
The oven roasted Rainbow Trout was deboned and then stuffed with bacon, shiitaki mushrooms and spinach with roasted fingerling potatoes. Perfectly seasoned!!
We even ordered two desserts to be shared, of course!!
The Patsy’s Blackberry/Blueberry Cobbler with their own fresh made Vanilla Ice Cream!! Yum!
Love when a Key Lime Pie is tart…that’s how Patsy’s is. Made inhouse, topped with whipped cream and fresh lime zest.
This is the time of the year when restaurants are open at the Delaware Beaches, the crowds are manageable, and the weather is awesome! Enjoy it.
Note: As of this post, Patsy’s is closed on Wednesday. No Brunch on Sunday. But, dinner is served at 5:30 p.m.

Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island, Delaware, are considered the quiet resorts. During the summer, the Quiet Resorts tend to be busy; a little quieter through the winter.
Bethany has gorgeous beaches with the Boardwalk and Bandstand the life ot this coastal resort during the summer. Pretty much all the streets in downtown Bethany Beach lead to the beach.
Delaware has low property taxes, no sales tax and Tidewater Realty can sell you that lifestyle. Tidewater Realty has had a presence in Bethany Beach for many years. It is a boutique real estate company catering to customers that want that personal attention all the time. It is located at 32892 Coastal Highway (Rt.1) in the Starboard Center. Broker of Record? John Merryman Tels. 302-539-7500 and 302-245-5901. Website? http://www.tidewaterrealty.com
During the summer months in Bethany Beach there is no construction going on. The town is sensitive to those that visit the resort and would like them to enjoy the area without listening to the banging of nails and the ins and outs of construction.
The lot at 313 Parkwood St. sits on a semi-dead end street. It is walking distance to everything the town of Bethany Beach has to offer. On this photo you can see the street looking east towards the beach and the second photo is the lot, which is 40 x 125.
Construction on this lot will start in the fall of 2013. Following are the photos of the house that will be built by Lane Builders. It is a custom built home, 3,710 square feet of living space, 650 square feet of porches, 210 square feet of decks, 6 bedrooms, 4 baths, elevator, deluxe master shower, hardwood floors, ceramic tile floors in bathrooms, granite countertops in the kitchen. It has 2,850 heated square feet. Pre-construction price is $999,000. Best deal in town.
For more information, please call John Merryman at Tidewater Realty, 302-539-7500 or 302-245-5901.
Enjoy the day….it is beautiful at the Beach!!
