Whipped to Perfection, Consistency of Soft Serve, Annie’s Banannies, More than Just Dessert, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

dscn5760

I have been totally hooked on Annie’s Banannies since my friend, Renee, told me about it.  I even question Annie the other day.  I was wondering why she was closed on Mondays.  Well, she is, actually, taking a well deserved Annie day off.

You wonder how a banana can transformed itself into an ice cream form.  It is not ice cream, by the way.  It is a frozen banana, put through a juicer.  Toppings are added and that is basically it.

dscn5755

Annie’s Banannies is located at #9 1st Street South in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  One block off the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk and one block south of Rehoboth Avenue.  Tel. 302-260-9875.  Website?  http://www.anniesbanannies.net.

I wrote a post with pictures on 7/22/10.  All you have to do is click on that month and year under the Archives of AboutMyBeaches and scroll down to the 22nd.

Annie has done some remodeling since the last time I was there.  The counter looks great and speeds things up.

dscn5759

Upon entering Annie’s Banannies you will notice a board with all the flavors and explanations.  On the website you can see every topping they offer, as well.

dscn5763

You will also notice that they offer gluten free, vegetarian/vegan, and lactose free toppings.  They also use eco friendly cups.  The spoons are made out of potato starch.

So basically, once you know your topping (you can build your own too) then this is what happens.

Out of the freezer comes the frozen bananas.  The juicer is waiting.

dscn5746

It is put through the juicer into a cup.

dscn5747dscn5752

Toppings are added.  I chose the Bunchberry, which had strawberries, blueberries and raspberry puree.

dscn5758

Another customer was there and she let me take a picture of her Banannie Cocktail, which had strawberries, blueberries, green grapes and pineapple.

dscn5764

There are benches outside, on the sidewalk, where you can enjoy one delicious desert without feeling too guilty.

Your 4-legged friend can have water and a treat outside, as well.

dscn5761

Talk to you later….have a good one!!

Note:  You can find Annie’s Banannies on Facebook.  On Twitter as BananniesBeach.

Cake Break, Gourmet Cupcake Company, Rehoboth Beach, Bakery, Breakfast, Opens 6:30 a.m. Daily, Coffee, Espresso, Smoothies, Vegan & Gluten Free Options, Nut Free Facility, Delaware Beaches

I had received a tip that I needed to look for Miss Piggy at Cake Break.  Say no more, that’s were I went on one of those hot summer days in Rehoboth Beach.  There is something about cupcakes.  They evoke childhood memories.  One serving and you don’t really need to share with anyone.  It is all yours to enjoy.

Cake Break is located at 7 South First Street, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-260-9264.  Website? www.cakebreakrehoboth.com.  You can find them on Facebook as CakeBreakRehoboth and on Twitter as CakeBreakRB.

I am so glad to see Cake Break so successful.  Debbie, her husband, and her staff, including her 2 professional bakers, are working so hard and it is, definitely, paying off.  I have written in the past several posts.  If you want to see them, just put the name on the Search on this website.

It was in the afternoon when I arrived at Cake Break.  I saw Miss Piggy.  Renee, who is a friend, and always on the lookout for interesting foods, told me about it.  So here it is.  Meet Miss Piggy.  This simple looking cupcake is packed with flavor.  Those contrasting flavors of salt and sweetness make this one awesome cupcake!!

dscn5765

I sat down to eat it as Debbie’s husband explained what it consisted of.  It is a brown sugar yellow cake with a swirl of brown sugar inside.  A drizzle of caramel with butter cream and bacon.  A total winner!!

That’s all I was going there for and as I was getting ready to leave the Canoli cupcakes made themselves present.  Devil’s food or yellow?  Decisions, decisions.

dscn5766

Please note that even though Cake Break is a gourmet cupcake company they do offer all kinds of homemade baked goods.  They open very early and stay open late, as well.  Their coffee is delicious.  I have tried it; bold and hot.

You can call their number 302-260-9264 and pickup is available curbside.

They are busy with weddings.  They offer wedding cupcakes, birthday cakes and special orders.  Just call them or stop by to meet with Debbie.

Cake Break is a nut free facility.  Vegan and Gluten Free options are available.  Both are the best.

Stop by and say hello…they are a friendly bunch!!

Cake Break, Bakery, Rehoboth Beach, Gourmet Cupcakes, Gluten Free, Vegan, Peanut Free, And Good Morning to You Too Rehoboth Beach!!

100_4007

It is dangerous out there, when you are out and about in Rehoboth Beach.  Plenty of temptations is what I meant to say.  Too many places to eat or just to grab something.  The Downtown Rehoboth eateries are so accessible that if you don’t exercise self control you might find yourself in trouble.

But, if that happened to be the case, then, walk the Boardwalk.  I believe that it is a mile each way.  There you have it, a perfect solution.

img_4830

Stopped at Cake Break on Thursday, right after the GreenMan’s breakfast, with my friend Jody.  Some cupcakes needed to be ordered.  Cake Break is located at 7 South First St.  Tel. 302-260-9264.  Website?  www.cakebreak.com.  On Facebook, as well.

Just in time to see some beautiful baked goods coming out of their kitchen.

img_4850

The sticky buns looked delicious.  Out of the oven they were warm, I am sure.  Thank God I was perfectly satified, having just had my tofu and the shot of wheat grass.

Then, the cinnamon buns appeared out of nowhere.  Nice and round with that cinnamon aroma that is so distinguishable.

img_4851

I noticed the table on the side.  A little girl was with her mother.  She was so busy decorating her cupcake she hardly noticed me.  She had a heavy hand with the decoration.  She was so happy with her creation.  Off she went having started her day in the most satisfying way.

img_4848

Cake Break has been open 7 days a week year round.  Debbie, her husband and staff are always hard at work.  Call them up and you can pick up your selections at curbside.

It is the only bakery in Downtown Rehoboth Beach that is a nut free facility.  Cake Break offers vegan cupcakes, gluten free cupcakes and vegan and gluten free icing, as well.

100_4006

P.S.  Cake Break makes one good cup of coffee.

Have a great day!!…Talk to you later…

Hobos, Sixty Day Wellness Program, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free, Change your Diet; Change the World

IMG_1488

This is the second time Gretchen Hanson, Executive Chef of Hobos Restaurant & Bar has offered this type of event.  It takes a lot of preparation and only a person that has embraced this lifestyle for the better part of her life, could really inform and teach.

IMG_1480

I was invited by Victoria to spend an informative evening at Hobos.  This very popular restaurant is located at 56 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. is 302-226-2226.  Website?  www.myhobos.com.

IMG_1481

Gretchen was offering a Sixty Day Wellness Program infused with cooking classes.  Tonight was the informative evening with classes starting next week.  If you are interested, either call the above mentioned telephone or visit the website.

Boy, was it cold tonight!!  It really was.  But, we all made it to Hobos.  It was full to capacity.  During warm months, Hobos has a great porch for dining; tonight we were all inside.

IMG_1484

This program for 60 days looked very interesting.  The majority of us there had not gone to her first session.  A lot of them, though, were returning to continue the learning process.  This class promises “detox from processed foods and an all around overhaul”.

The first thing we did was eat.  That was more like it.  I liked that.  The foods had gorgeous colors; a nice variety, as well.  Only the couscous was not gluten free.  Couscous comes from North Africa.

IMG_1478

The cabbage was delicious with a slight hint of sweetness; appealing to our visual senses.

IMG_1479

The lentil soup got rave reviews, especially since it was so cold.

IMG_1486

Gretchen suggested we tried everything.  That’s exactly what everyone did.  My plate looked beautiful.  Pesto, eggplant tapenade and rice with zucchini were among the dishes.

IMG_1485

It was a good crowd.  Immediately after we were all seated, we introduced ourselves.  Some were retired, others were looking for healthier ways to cook, others had no idea the word Vegan was going to be introduced.  Then there were the persons that said they had no intention of being Vegans.  And on and on it went.  The interesting part was the people that had already made a change in their diet.  Some had lost weight and others had very impressive results after having blood tests performed.

Gretchen will be the first to tell you that she is not a nutritionist or dietician.  And, the class is not a diet class; it is a change from the way you eat.  More of a plant base lifestyle; less milk and animal protein.  She does not demand you become Vegan; she will be the first to tell you that she is not the perfect Vegan.  She would like you to try it for those 60 days so that you can obtain the full effect of what she is talking about.

The problem with all of us, here in America is that we have set aside that family dinner that was so important.  It really is a thing of the past. We eat foods that are handed out from a drive through window; then eat it just as fast.

If you are going to eat meat then choose “happy flesh”, meaning don’t put in your body something that has been injected to give it that extra boost.

We were there for 3 hours and it went so fast.  So very interesting and even though she only scratched the surface, we all learned a lot.

While this class is in progress, Hobos is open on week-ends (Friday, Sat. and Sunday) for lunch and dinner.  They can deliver and cater.

The restaurant is “green”, from toilet tissue to plastic bags and deli containers.  Everything is recycable and recycled.  Every company used is earth friendly.

Hobos has vegetarian, vegan and gluten free menus and it offers specials every day, as well.

I had to laugh when Gretchen said this 60 days are “a little granola crunchy”.  She has an interesting story; growing up in a commune where everything was home-grown.  Her mother did not even have a can opener; not such thing was needed.

Some of the suggested readings were:

The China Study by Dr. Colin Campbell.  It is the most comprehensive nutritional study ever done.

The Omnivores Dilemma by Michael Pollan; thoughtful, insightful and provocative.

Watch Food, Inc.  It is a must watch because nothing you put in your mouth will ever taste the same.

One last thought.  Let’s say you fall off the wagon, then make peace with your choices and move on.

As Gretchen said “Your Path, Your Journey, Your Choices”.

Guess What?  I do feel a little guilty all of a sudden as I write this post….I went to Eming’s Pig Roast….tomorrow’s post…talk to you later…..

One World Cafe, Vegan, Restaurant, Review, Stony Run Trail, Baltimore, Maryland

You wonder if I am still blogging about the beaches.  Of course, but I had a little detour and I do love checking other places out.  So, my posts this past week have reflected that.

Last week I was in Baltimore and Susie and I took off for a long walk.  By the way, Susie is my sister in law and an avid walker.  We had a destination in mind, this being the One World Cafe but in order to get there and have breakfast we needed to walk close to 2 miles.

We took a trail called the Stony Run Trail.  It was a beautiful autumn day.  The Stony Run Trail follows the railroad bed of the former Baltimore & Delta/Maryland Central.  Service began between Baltimore and Towson in 1882.  Then in 1891 the Maryland Central merged to form the Baltimore & Lehigh Railroad, then to merge again to form the Ma & Pa in 1901, which was in service into the 1950’s.

100_5111

100_5115

There are no railroads running now on this beautiful trail that navigates through very pretty neighborhoods.  The restoration of the Stony Run Stream has been completed and community involvement has been on-going to prevent erosion and to improve the condition of the trail.  Native plants, trees and shrubs have been planted and the trail is used by walkers, runners, and bikers.

100_5112

100_5114

So, if you like to walk this trail is a “way to travel” in Roland Park.  It connects a lot of great destinations in the northern Baltimore suburbs; to the Baltimore Museum of Arts, Johns Hopkins Campus, Charles Village, Roland Park, Hampden and Remington.  If you are acquainted with Baltimore, then you know that all these neighborhoods are known for their wonderful restaurants and shops.

100_5116

Finally we arrived at One World Cafe located at 100 W. University Parkway.  Tel. 410-235-5777.  Website is www.one-world-cafe.com.  It is practically, across Johns Hopkins University.

100_5119

One World Cafe reminded me of some of the restaurants that I visited in Boulder, Colorado.  It was eclectic and bohemian.

100_5131

Their motto?  “Healthy vegetarian cuisine in a casual, eclectic atmosphere.”

One World Cafe serves organic and chemical free fruits, vegetables and whole grains, whenever possible.

Their menu reflect the vegan items; vegan desserts, fair trade organic coffee, organic wine, beer or local brews.  The restaurant has a full service bar that is open until 2 a.m.

100_5124

If you are someone that has a food allergy, this restaurant is very aware and sensitive to those with dietary limitations.

We were hungry but coffee was on my mind.  I had one of the best cups of coffee in a long time.  I should say a large cup of coffee.  I like my coffee with a bold taste and it was rich and foamy and perfect!!  The barista outdid himself.  I told him so.

100_5122

Next I ordered a Smoked Salmon Omelette, which had smoked salmon, red onion, tomato and capers.  Served with multi grain bread.  On the menu it stated that if you ate gluten free, then avoid the bread.  Delicious.

100_5130

I wanted to try the vegan meatless sausage patties and they were very good, as well.

100_5129

Susie ordered the Blue Corn Cakes and she got 2 large pancakes served with butter and organic maple syrup.

100_5127

She wanted to try the Fakin Bacon.  She liked my sausage better but I liked the bacon just as much as the sausage.

100_5128

Even though we only had breakfast, the dinner menu looked very interesting and I would love to come back and try some of their offerings.

I found the restaurant very comforting, a neighborhood restaurant where you can just stop by and have just a cup of coffee, read the paper sitting on one of the sofas, tables, or at the bar and have breakfast, just like we did.

One World Cafe is open Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. and on Sundays from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Have a great day!!!…Talk to you later….

Cake Break, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Gourmet Cupcakes, Vegan, Nut Free, Gluten Free, Coffee, Smoothies, Breakfast Cupcakes, Bagels, Delaware Beaches

100_4000

Hey, how are you?  This is the third time I am going to be talking about cupcakes.

100_4018

Is there a battle between Cupcakes and Muffins; Really?  A Faceoff, no less.

What are the differences between one another and, which ones do we ultimately like best?

100_4025

Ask anyone and they will tell you that the differences are that the cupcakes have that wonderful frosting which evoke childhood memories; the muffin, well it’s just a muffin.

100_4004

But, no way, the difference is really about sweetness.  The cupcake is a “small cake” and one individual portion; whereas, the muffin, while also an individual portion is often sweetened, but not necessarily.

100_4009

Muffins tend to be more like breads.  They are more dense and therefore, more flour is used.  There is a marked difference in texture.  The cupcake is much lighter and, of course, there is that icing.

100_4010

100_4024

I had mentioned to a couple of people that I was going to be visiting Cake Break located at 7 South First St., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Tel. 302-260-9264.  Website www.cakebreakrehoboth.com. They are on Facebook and Twitter.  E-mail is cakebreakrehoboth@gmail.com.  They are open from 7:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.

Rachel Rockstarr contacted me through this blog and told me that I needed to try them. Some of the people I talked to had different opinions; I needed to check them out myself.

At Cake Break I met Eleanor, Samjeeb, Andriy and Jackie.  All work in different capacities and all very eager to show me the shop.

100_4005

It is not only cupcakes that are baked and sold here but they also have Surf Bagels, coffee, newspapers, cinnamon rolls, smoothies and breakfast cupcakes.  The menu changes daily.  You may choose to sit on one of their stools or outside on the bench.

100_3997

100_3998

Cake Break can customize any cupcake.  They also bake special order cakes.  Just give them a little bit of time and they will have them ready for you.  You can also call Cake Break ahead of time and pick up your order at curbside.

100_4013

Customers with food allergies should breathe a sight of relief.  They offer Vegan, Nut Free and Gluten Free cupcakes.  The Gluten Free and the Nut Free can easily be iced, but they are still in the developing stages of a Vegan free icing.  Remember that vegans do not consume any animal products.

The chocolate gluten free cupcake got the best reviews in my household.  We have tried many of them and by far this one was the best.

The Red Velvet with red cocoa, and cream cheese icing was delicious but I have to tell you that my personal favorite was the Rum Raisin Bread Pudding cupcake/muffin.  It had cinnamon, raisins and a rum icing.

100_4003

Eleanor loves to make coffee and I had an iced coffee latte and off I went to explore what else Rehoboth had to offer on a summer day.

100_3999

The question by Cake Break to you is, “Is it time for you to take a cake break.?”

And, my question to you is, Will Cake Break make it into the Cup Cake Wars on t.v.?  Stay tuned.

 100_3995

Note:  If you would like to check my other 2 posts on cupcakes, then go to the left hand side of this blog and under Archives click on January and scroll down to the 5th.  That was Sweet Sin in Baltimore, Maryland.  You can check the other post by clicking on the month of June and scroll down to the 14th and that company, Cupcake Couture is in Delray Beach, Florida.

Have a great week-end!!

Annie’s Banannies, Rehoboth Beach, Bananas, Dessert, Fresh Fruit Toppings, Review, Delaware Beaches

 100_3272

Okay Renee, I got it.  Totally a fan now.  I can see why you go there every day and have one of Annie’s Banannies.

And, Mac, you are also a regular and you were not kidding when you told me it is the best dessert in town.

100_3418

The friends who mentioned that Annie’s Banannies is their favorite place.  I did not know they also knew Mac.

100_3424

The word is spreading; how good this dessert is.  Word of mouth again is a powerful tool.

100_3420

Annie’s Banannies is my post tonight.  I went twice to their location on 9 1st Street South in downtown Rehoboth Beach.  If you are a local or a resident and know the town well, Annie’s Banannies is one door down from the Frogg Pond.  The telephone is 302-260-9875.  The website is www.anniesbanannies.net. The e-mail address is anniesbanannies@comcast.net.

Please check the website because the menu is posted, as well as Annie’s story; on how finally her store was realized; a tender and uplifting summary of what Annie is all about.  It is her own creation!!

100_3405

100_3406

Her motto?  You’ll never dream….it’s not ice cream.

All natural ingredients that are good for you.  The main ingredient?  A frozen banana that will be put through a “juicer” and the outcome is like the most delicious ice cream.  Soft, not overly sweet.  There are no refined sugars used; fruit purees are sweetened with agave nectar.  The toppings range from fruits to nuts.

100_3411

Annie’s Bananies is also an eco-friendly company.  The cups and straws are made from corn; the spoons from potatoes.  All cups, desserts spoons, straws, and napkins are biodegradable and organic products are chosen when available.

100_3412

Annie’s Banannies is sensitive to those customers with nut allergies.  Plenty of Banannies that are vegetarian, vegan and gluten free, are available.

I decided to go with the Bunchberries.  This one is made with fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberry puree.  It was gluten free and vegetarian/vegan friendly.

I kept watching how they just put a couple of frozen bananas in the juicer and the transformation was underway. Could not get over it.  It was so good and refreshing.  On a hot day like today it was the best prescription.

100_3413

On my second trip, the Tropical Banannie was ordered.  It had fresh mango, pineapple and coconut flakes.  Again, it was gluten free and vegetarian/vegan friendly. Loved it just as much.

100_3423

So, yes, I am hooked……Hours of operation are:  Mondays – Wednesdays from 3 – 11 p.m. and Thursdays – Sundays 11 – 11 p.m.

Talk to you later….you know I will.
