Where is my shoe….the Sea Witch asked?  Does it fit?  If it does, wear it in Rehoboth Beach as a celebration of the 25th Sea Witch Festival gets underway.

dscn2186

One of my local friends said to me ” Is it Sea Witch this week-end?”  I replied “Do you live here?”  He said “I can’t keep up with the festivals!”  Ha ha…..the locals can’t keep up, but in reality they love all the excitement the Second Season brings to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  The visitors say “Keep them coming”.  “We love coming to the beach”.

dscn2179

So here I was early in the morning on Friday trying to capture the essence of the beach.  We are really spoiled….have you heard the news? Nothing good, I assure you.  The Delaware Coastal towns give the residents and visitors a sense of peace.  Love it and don’t take it for granted.  The Boardwalk was quiet and after the rain event on Thursday, the day was turning out to be beautiful

dscn2196

They were getting ready to film on the Boardwalk.  DelmarvaLife was broadcasting….and Norman, the scooter riding dog was patiently waiting his turn.

dscn2208

dscn2200

Finally, it was time for Norman to shine, and as he rode the scooter and people clapped, and for the most part he made our day!!  He will be around throughout the week-end.

dscn2212

Story time at Browseabout Books on Rehoboth Avenue will be on Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m.  Your little young ones getting up early might like this activity.

dscn2183

Out and About in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, the stores are into the spirit of the festivities.  Lots of merchandise, plenty of it on sale.  Tax free shopping in Delaware!!

dscn2164

If you are vacationing with your pooch, Rehoboth Beach loves dogs….restaurants with outdoor seating like Grotto Pizza on the Avenue….welcomes your best friend.

dscn2190

This week-end is going to be wicked and wonderful….Costume Parade, Dog Parade, Trick or Treating, Fun and Silly Games and Activities for the whole family!!  Don’t miss entertainment at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand, Lantern Tours, 5K Race and more.

I believe the photo is circa 1906 on Rehoboth Beach, Delaware….an award winning Boardwalk.  Since those times it has been the life of the town, strolling the boards with the Atlantic Ocean as the view!!

We have come a long way, but still the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk offers its visitors and residents a relaxing gathering place.  Some walk it, jog it, or even bring their dogs to it.

dscn9845

In the evenings, summer visitors gather at the Boardwalk for rides, games, and favorite Boardwalk Grub!!

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, The Nation’s Summer Capital, Love it in The Summer, Love it in The Winter, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn7339

A time capsule in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware?  In 1991, Rehoboth Beach celebrated its Charter Centennial.  A 6 foot by 6 foot time capsule was buried on the corner where the Chamber of Commerce is located, across from the Lighthouse traffic circle.  The plaque on the above photo identifies its location.  The capsule contains records from 1991, magazines, telephone books, and museum history records.  It also has original photos, artifacts, postcards and souveniers from 1876 to 1891, plus the original die casts for the centennial coin.  At the time, the youngest attendee was Tricia Conlon who was then 2 months old.  Her photo and family history were included as she could possibly be alive at age 99 when the capsule is opened on March 19, 2090, one year before the bicentennial celebration in 2091.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware is also knows as The Nation’s Summer Capital.  In just a few months the Delaware Beaches will start waking up after a hard winter.  Our winters our usually mild and balmy….we will see what that Groundhog will hae to say on Sunday.

dscn7373

It was quiet in town.  Love Rehoboth Beach this time of the year!!

On trendy Baltimore Avenue.

One of my favorite places in Rehoboth Beach is Silver Lake.  This is a freshwater lake.  It is closer to an ocean than any other freshwater lake in the U.S.  It was once called Newbold’s Freshwater Lake.  It is a waterfowl preserve and migrating birds like geese and ducks stop to recharge on their north-south flyway.  The gazebos lining the lake have become symbolic welcomming signs to visitors of Rehoboth Beach.

The Village Improvement Association, VIA, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, The 8th St. Nicholas Tea, Sleigh Boutique, Fundraising, Event, Wine Tasting, Friday, November 22nd, The VIA Meets the Needs of the Local Community…Charity, Scholarships, Service

dscn5969

The Village Improvement Association in Rehoboth Beach is best known as the VIA.  I was telling Carolyn Billingsley, the current President of the VIA, who is also my neighbor, how I had taken a fun history tour of Rehoboth Beach through the Rehoboth Beach Museum and our guide was telling the visitors that you do not get to do anything in Rehoboth Beach unless the VIA approves it.  She laughed and said “I would not put it that way.” Haha, I did laugh because this association of only women has done for Rehoboth so much since 1909 when it was first organized and continues to remain dedicated to their mission of supporting the needs of the local community.  It is a 501(c)3 non profit organization, and a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

dscn6386dscn6414

In the past 100 years of service to the Rehoboth Beach community, some of the many VIA’s accomplishments are:  The establishment of the Rehoboth Beach Library, provided parks with shrubbery, flowers, trees, provided Boardwalk with lights, benches, water fountain, original bandstand, and refuse cans, began a successful mosquito campaign, restored Cape Henlopen Lighthouse replica, helped with the formation of the Rehoboth Art League and Sussex Gardeners Club, spearheaded war bond drive to buy a bomber for the Air Force, established nursing scholarships, purchased beach wheels to provide beach access to the disabled.  The VIA also contributes to many charities in our coastal communities.  For more information, please visit http://www.rehobothbeachvia.org/accomplishments.

The VIA is located at Boardwalk & Grenoble Street, north of the Boardwalk.  Tel. 302-227-1631.  Website?  http://www.rehobothbeachvia.org.  On Facebook and Twitter, as well.  On Friday, 11/8 and Saturday, 11/9, the VIA was celebrating the holidays with their 8th Annual St. Nicholas Tea & Sleigh Boutique.  It was the perfect opportunity to get into the Holiday Spirit, shop a little and eat a lot.  On both days, the VIA, with the cooperation of so many of its volunteers, became the perfect hostess as it offered twice each day, the St Nicholas Tea and Sleigh Boutique.  A lot of work comes into preparing this grand fundraising event.  Looking effortless, to say the least….it was my first time, and a beautiful day in Rehoboth Beach.

dscn6396dscn6378

Arriving at the VIA with Carolyn, we were directed to our table.  It was a sold out event and the tables were assigned and beautifully decorated by members who displayed their own personal china and touch to make the tables festive and ready for tea.

dscn6377

The holidays are around the corner and the Sleigh Boutique offered something for everyone with many of Rehoboth Beach local artists making a presence at the St. Nicholas Tea.  Baskets, jewelry, handmade note cards, home accessories were there for easy shopping.

dscn6392

dscn6383

dscn6388

It was time to sit down, relax and enjoy tea.  The shopping would continue later on.

dscn6399

The servers were being instructed.  There are about 220 members and these servers were all VIA members, as well.

dscn6391

The guests started with a choice of tea, cider or water and Blueberry Scones with Lemond Curd.  Please remember that all the food was prepared by the VIA members.

dscn6404

Savories like the classic Cucumber Sandwich, the Chicken Salad on mini croissant, Ham and Swiss Palmiers, Canberry Feta Pinwheels, and Mushroom Tarts were just delicious.

dscn6408

While continuing the tea and friendly chat….Santa came in…we were all behaving.

dscn6412

Sweet Endings with “Melt in Mouth” Cookies, Three Chocolate Cake, Apricot dipped in chocolate, and Decorated Pretzel Rods.

dscn6413

Please note that the recipes for the Chicken Salad, Melt in Mouth Cookies, and Three Chocolate Cake can be found in the V.I.A. Cookbook, which is now in its third printing and available, locally, at bookstores.  You may also order the cookbook by visiting the VIA’s website above mentioned.  Scroll down and click on the order form.

Some continued to shop, there was still plenty to see.

dscn6381dscn6389

NOTE:  Friday, November 22nd is the VIA Wine Tasting by Teller Wines, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Clubhouse on 415 N Boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach!!  6 Premium Wine Tastings with Food by Touch of Italy.  $20.00…please RSVP to 302-227-1631…Door Prizes!

Then, it was time to go….the VIA was getting ready for another tea and shopping experience!! Have a good one!!  And, many thanks to Carolyn for inviting me to such great event.

Rehoboth Beach is a great town to walk, jog and just sit on one of the many benches outlining the award-winning Boardwalk.  During the summer months this Boardwalk is packed, but on The Second Season, it is a great place to relax and take in that salty ocean air.

dscn5958

Funland is close for the season, but Playland is open!!

dscn5959

dscn5960

Part of the fun whille on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk is the “boardwalk grub”.  Those foods that scream “ice cream”.  These ladies were having so much fun and happy to pose, as welll.

dscn5942

At the water’s edge the fun continued.

dscn5987

And on the beach, some were walking their dogs (you can do that now) or beachcombing.

dscn5997

dscn5984

From the north side of the Boardwalk the WWII Towers were clearly seen.

dscn6000

Plenty of weddings take place on the beach….and yesterday, as the day started to wind down….the guests were patiently waiting.

I can see why there is so much traffic when the height of the season is long gone!!  The Second Season at the Delaware Beaches brings gorgeous weather, restaurant specials, events, and no parking meters!!

dscn5717

dscn5716

Today is another one of those days, just like yesterday when I took off for the north side of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk.  It was about 8:30 a.m. and I was meeting Alice.  A few were already getting ready for a relaxing morning of fishing; others were walking the Boardwalk.  The Boardwalk is one mile long each way.  This is an award winning Boardwalk, originally built in 1873!!   It is the perfect place to renew in the a.m…..the salt air, the ocean breezes, and good company.  Locals touch each end of the Boardwalk to make sure they have accomplished their walk.

dscn5715

A weekly stop at Tomato Sunshine is a favorite, as well.  At this time of the year,…”produce great pumpkins, the pies will follow later.”  The seasons bring so many colorful changes to Tomato Sunshine.  It is located at 19791 Coastal Highway.  If you are leaving Rehoboth Beach, you will see it on your right.  If you are coming into Rehoboth, it will be on your left.  They are open, at this time of the year, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.  Tel. 302-226-2533.  Website?  http://www.tomatosunshine.com.
