Destination? Beach Plum, Bethany Beach, Delaware, Antiques, Used Furniture, Home Accessories, Bargain Hunting, The Quiet Resort, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn6232

Everyone loves a good deal, and treasure hunting is a past time.  In Bethany Beach, Delaware, the place to stop and look for antiques, lamps, sales, furniture and accessories is Beach Plum, located at 900 North Pennsylvania Avenue.  It is a Treasure Hunters’ paradise.

dscn6230

As I was leaving town I stepped on the brakes.  Visually, the store looked great.  Lots of colorful items outside….Beach Plum was fully stocked.

dscn6231

dscn6251

I could not resist taking George Cole’s picture.  Holding his basket he looked the part.  He has owned Beach Plum for 37 years.  He has also been our Sussex County Commissioner for 28 years.  He opens the shop every day.

dscn6234dscn6238

Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Tel. 302-542-4564.  The fun  part of visiting Beach Plum is that it changes daily.  New items come in and plenty of others go out the door.  The buoys have been flying out the moment George gets them.  They are only $12.50 each and are very popular these days.

dscn6229

If you liked the boat…..well, it sold. I think it was going to be a decorative piece…hanging?

dscn6228

You can call Beach Plum if you are “cleaning” house.  They will be more than happy to assist you.  Shopping here is never boring.

dscn6233dscn6249

Stepping into Beach Plum’s porch you will then find many decorative wall art.

dscn6235

dscn6240

Inside, and protected from the weather, antiques, lamps and home accessories for every personal taste.

dscn6242

dscn6245

Beach Plum is known for the excellent condition of its items.  There is always a personal a story, some items are rare, but others are just the “trash”, discarded, that will become someone’s treasure.

dscn6243dscn6248

George is a fixture in the community….passing by Shelley yelled “did you sell it’?  Yeah!  The beauty of living in a small coastal resort is that you pretty much know everyone.  Wether you think that’s good or not, I don’t know.  I find it very comforting, to tell you the truth.

So, if you are looking for that special piece for the corner of your room or just love to treasure hunt….you never know what you are going to find…check out Beach Plum.  The Second Season at the Delaware Beaches is perfect for this popular past time.

Destination? Bethany Beach, Delaware, The Quiet Resort, The Second Season, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches

dscn6217

In 1901 the Town of Bethany Beach was founded.

dscn6218

In 1903 the first Boardwalk was constructed.

dscn6221

In 1934 the first paved road from Bethany Beach was completed.

dscn6222

Those are a few of the milestones that happened so many years ago.  Bethany Beach is a thriving vacation destination.  In the Second Season it is considered The Quiet Resort.  Don’t get me wrong, the residents love it.  It is their time to reclaim their oasis.

dscn6225

They have the town all to themselves.  The life of the town is its Boardwalk.  It is a place for peace and relaxation at this time of the year.  A walk on the beach or on the Boardwalk is always a must.

dscn6223

These photos were taken on Monday, 10/24 late in the afternoon….you can see what I mean.

dscn6220

The wide and gorgeous beach is amazing.

dscn6224

Stop by and check it out.  Talk to you later.

Bethany Beach Eats, 14 Global, Restaurant, Review, Delaware Beaches, The Quiet Resort, Southern Delaware…The Second Season!

dscn5327

Nothing better than to be with family when the unexpected occurs too soon.  Sharing a meal with the ones you love is always comforting.  So, we decided to visit 14 Global, located at 14 North Pennsylvania Avenue in the Quiet Resort of Bethany Beach, Delaware.

There was a coolness in the evening, September is a great month to be at the beach.  Our choice of seating was inside.  Not too many photos inside the restaurant since it was quiet and it was best to give everyone their privacy.  I certainly wanted my own, as well.

Paul was waiting on us and his suggestions were excellent.

The food can be shared and it is served as soon as it is finished in the kitchen.

The Steak Tartar was very good and received good reviews from the table.  We all had a tasting.

dscn5320

I had to laugh because when the African Kale Salad arrived, the comment was “I don’t remember my mother cooking kale like this when I was young.”  Raw is the new “in”.

dscn5319

I love Octopus and 14 Global presented us with a delicious one.

dscn5325

The Brussel Sprouts gave us added greens.  Warm and perfectly seasoned.

dscn5324

I am definitely coming back for Whole Bronzino.  I really loved it.  It was the evening’s highlight.  Thanks to Paul for mentioning that it is one of the most favorite dishes in the house.  It was whole and it did have bones, but they were easy to pick and gave the fish even more flavor.

dscn5322

After….I was not kidding, Yum!

dscn5326

The desserts sounded good but we decided to leave them for another time.  We were perfectly satisfied.  Time to go home.

14 Global has outdoor seating, as well, and they do have take out.  Their tel. is 302-616-1035.

Talk to you later…

Bethany Beach, Delaware, Out & About in The Quiet Resort, Top 10 Best Beaches for Families, Coastal Delaware, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware, Summer of 2013

dscn4412dscn4392

Bethany Beach, Delaware, was founded by members of the Christian Church, also known as the Disciples of Chirst, of Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania.  “Bethany still reflects the character of the early settlers who were looking for a haven of rest for quiet people.”

dscn4436

Bethany is quiet during the winter months and residents love it that way.  It is a time to recharge and enjoy this beautiful coastal town in Southern Delaware.  For many years I was one of those residents.  My children’s playground was Bethany Beach.  Family Vacation Critic has named Bethany Beach as one of the 10 Best Beaches for Families for 2013.

dscn4405

When you arrive in Bethany, “Chief Little Owl” will be welcoming you to the town.  The original statue was created by Peter Wolf Toth, who in his own way wanted to give thanks to the U.S.  I remember him working on his statue, carving away, for months in the early 1970s.  He created more than 50 wooden sculptures of famous Indans and donated at least one to every state.  “Chief Little Owl” pays honor to the Nanticoke nation.  The first statue stood in that spot until 1992, but was destroyed by high winds.  The newest version was created also by Peter Toth, from a red cedar log from the Pacific Northwest which should last from 50 to 150 years.

dscn4390

Bethany Beach has a Sister City….Periers, France.  Periers is located in the northwest of France just a few miles from the Normandy beaches, on which the allied armies came to the rescue of France on June 6, 1944.  The citizens of Periers, who were liberated from German oppression on July 27, 1944 have welcomed American solders and their family members who have visited the town for these many years.  On the sign you can see the seal of each town shown linked together by “twinned in friendship”.  The sign is located on Garfield Parkway.

You have to give credit where credit is due….Thanks to Melinda who has beautified the Town of Bethany Beach.  Digging, planting, weeding, maintaining, it is a full time job.  The town looks awesome!

dscn4391

dscn4408

Right by the Totem Pole, at the intersection of Garfield Parkway & Rt. 1, you will find the office for the Town Hall.  The Bethany Beach History Museum is located in the foyer of the Town Hall.  The exhibits contain memorabilia and photographs from the Bethany Beach area.  Admission to the Museum is free of charge.  It opens weekdays throughout the year from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.  During Sundays, in the months of July and August, it will open from Noon until 3 p.m.

dscn4407

dscn4404dscn4393

The Town Park is adjacent to the Town Hall.  It gets hot at the beach, so this park is the perfect place to take a break; where you can sit, relax, and even work on your computer.  It is wireless and it is smoke free.

dscn4400

dscn4403

dscn4402

If you are a resident of Bethany or you are vacationing, please note that on Sundays, from 8 a.m. until Noon the Farmers’ Market will be right by the parking lot of the PNC Bank on Garfield Parkway and Atlantic Ave.  You cannot miss it, because Garfield Parkway is Main Street.

dscn4411

Bethany Beach is a very walkable town because is not very big.  You can go from the beach, to shop, eat, relax at the Town Park, or take the kids to the playground, or play basketball, all within a couple of blocks.

dscn4395

The perfect way to go out and about in Bethany is with your bike. You will find plenty of spaces to park it.

dscn4413

But, the Trolley will take you all through town and beyond.  It runs from Memorial Day through mid September, continuously, between 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.  Please note that the last pick  up on Atantic and Garfield is at 9:45 p.m.  On the half hour starting at 9:30 a.m.  Please note that during a lunch break or dinner break there may be little or no service daily from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  You can flag the Trolley down anywhere along the route for pick up or discharge, except on Rt. 26 and Rt. 1.  No pick-up or drop-ff on Jefferson Bridge or Rt. 26.  With a trolley far of only $.25 each way, you know you cannot beat that.  Also, the driver does not make change, so have your quarter ready. For more info, please call 302-539-8011 or check the schedule by visiting http://www.townofbethanybeach.com/index.zspx?nid=268.

dscn4435

It was great to see Bethany so crowded, because after a quiet winter it was as if it was screaming….Look at Me Now!!  Garfield Parkway was full of visitors, and so was the Boardwalk….the beaches?  Everywhere you looked the umbrellas were up.

dscn4443

dscn4448

dscn4441

dscn4447

All streets in Downtown Bethany Beach lead to the beach….make sure you read all the beach regulations.

dscn4445dscn4446

The weather for this first official week of the Summer of 2013 continues to be fantastic.  It almost makes you forget all the rain we have had lately.  Enjoy the beach, kick back and relax….that’s what you are here for!!

Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island, Delaware, are considered the quiet resorts.  During the summer, the Quiet Resorts tend to be busy; a little quieter through the winter.

Bethany has gorgeous beaches with the Boardwalk and Bandstand the life ot this coastal resort during the summer.  Pretty much all the streets in downtown Bethany Beach lead to the beach.

dscn2143

dscn2154

Delaware has low property taxes, no sales tax and Tidewater Realty can sell you that lifestyle.  Tidewater Realty has had a presence in Bethany Beach for many years.  It is a boutique real estate company catering to customers that want that personal attention all the time.  It is located at 32892 Coastal Highway (Rt.1) in the Starboard Center.  Broker of Record?  John Merryman  Tels. 302-539-7500 and 302-245-5901.  Website?  http://www.tidewaterrealty.com

During the summer months in Bethany Beach there is no construction going on.  The town is sensitive to those that visit the resort and would like them to enjoy the area without listening to the banging of nails and the ins and outs of construction.

The lot at 313 Parkwood St. sits on a semi-dead end street.  It is walking distance to everything the town of Bethany Beach has to offer.  On this photo you can see the street looking east towards the beach and the second photo is the lot, which is 40 x 125.

dscn2133dscn2129

Construction on this lot will start in the fall of 2013.  Following are the photos of the house that will be built by Lane Builders.  It is a custom built home, 3,710 square feet of living space, 650 square feet of porches, 210 square feet of decks, 6 bedrooms, 4 baths, elevator, deluxe master shower, hardwood floors, ceramic tile floors in bathrooms, granite countertops in the kitchen.  It has 2,850 heated square feet.  Pre-construction price is $999,000.  Best deal in town.

Bethany Beach, Delaware, Southern Delaware, The Quiet Resort….An Award Winning Boardwalk…Disappointed it will not be featured in the Travel Channel

img_3331

“Bethany was named by H.LO. Atkinson, who won a nationwide contest.  He was given a lot on the beach as his prize.  Bethany still reflects the character of the early settlers who were looking for “a haven of rest for quiet people”.”  It is known as The Quiet Resort.

dscn5427

Having lived in Bethany Beach for many years, I cannot help to feel disappointment as I learned the Travel Channel will not be featuring Bethany Beach in the upcoming filming of the best boardwalks in America.  Not sure if that is the title of the program, though.  The Travel Channel will be filming in Rehoboth Beach this coming week-end as part of that program.  They will be concentrating mainly on the Boardwalk, Bandstand and what goes around it.

img_3289

How I know about this, is because I was contacted by the film company for some information.  I am sure they have contacted others in the area, as well.  They will also be filming in Ocean City, Maryland, during the Marlin Tournament in a couple of weeks.  So I asked them about Bethany Beach.  Guess what?  No idea it was even there or how far from each other our beaches really are, including O.C.

dscn5418

Believe me, I am thrilled that Rehoboth and Ocean City will be nationally featured.  But, little Bethany has been left behind.

dscn5416

I told them everything I could about why they should film if Bethany, even if only a few minutes.  You know, how tiny Bethany is.  That’s what people love. I told them that Bethany’s summer life revolves around the Boardwalk and Bandstand.  A piece of small town America. Kids playing on the beach, music playing at the Bandstand.  I even told them about the Totem Pole; how I had seen Peter Wolf Toth carve it in the 1970’s.  Chief Little Owl, which is a landmark in Bethany Beach was his #22. His gift to give honor to Native Americans; Trail of The Whispering Giants.

dscn5422

dscn5424

The Bethany Beach Boardwalk, along with the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk received awards at the same time.  Number 6 of 10 Great American Boardwalks.

dscn5420

When I look at these pictures, I can’t help thinking….they don’t know what they are missing!!

Best way to travel in Bethany Beach..The Trolley!!
