Bethany Beach Eats! 99 Sea Level, Restaurant, Raw Bar, Review, Bethany Beach, Delaware, The Quiet Resort, Delaware Beaches, Sip & Savor, Wine Society Dinner Series

“Wine is meant to be with food – that’s the point of it.”   julia child

It is January at the Deaware Beaches and it should a little quieter.  And it is, don’t get me wrong.  But these beaches have become year round resorts.  No longer just for summer residents, people have been moving to the Delaware Beaches in large amounts.  Years ago living in Bethany Beach meant that once Labor Day Week-End came around, only abou 500 of us would be left behind.  I liked it like that but the towns had to grow just like anything else.

I was meeting on Thursday with a few friends from Ocean City, Maryland.  This was a good mid point to meet.  But, we also found out that 99 Sea Level, a new restaurant that opened this year at the also newly opened Marriott Bethany Beach Ocean Suites, was considered very good with a perfect location, as well. 99 Sea Level is located at 99 Hollywood St., Bethany Beach, DE 19930  Tel. 302-539-0299  The restaurant is open at this time of the year, Wednesday through Sunday.  Wednesday – Saturday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.  Website? http://www.99sealevel.com.

99 Sea Level is inside the hotel on the same level of the hotel’s Reception.

DSCN2117

It is too cold to sit outside but this summer make sure to stop by and grab outdoor dining which is oceanfront by the Boardwalk.

DSCN2094

The lobby of the hotel is so pretty and make sure to notice the chandelier designed and built by glass blower, Jeffrey Auxer, from Berlin, Maryland.

DSCN2096

Every Thursday 99 Sea Level offers a Wine Society Dinner.  You can choose to be part of the dinner or you can eat from the regular menu.  We decided to go with the wine dinner.  Ms. Donna Serafini who is the Director of Operations was going to be our Wine Sommelier.

4 Courses paired with beautiful wines.  This dinner was $48.00.  The bar was crowded and also the room was full with all of us expecting one delicious meal accompanied by the perfect wines.

DSCN2101

The First Course was a Chickpea Vegetable Stew with pearl onion, fingerling potatoes and flatbread.  The Wine?  Firesteed Riesling from Oregon.

DSCN2102

Between courses the staff made sure we were comfortable attending to our needs.  We were enjoying chatting and catching up.

The Second Course was Warm Octopus…leeks compote, Peruvian Anticucho Sauce, Truffle Virgin Olive Oil.  Anticucho, say that again?  They say it is a name given by Peruvians to a very hot soup, prepared with a special pepper from the jungle.  The Wine?  Ferarri Carano Fume Blanc, a Sauvignon Blanc from Sonoma County, California.

DSCN2106

The Third Course was a Veal Sirloin…yuca puree, carrots, and mustard peppercorn.  It was paired with Edmeades Zinfandel from Mendocino County.

DSCN2112

The Fourth Course…The sweet ending of Dessert was an Apple Upside Down with cinnamon, vanilla cake, and candy pecans.  It was paired with Block Nine Pinot Noir from California.

DSCN2115

It was a lot of fun…and lots of wine!!  These dinners happen every Thursday.  They will also have in February a Beer Dinner also pairing courses with them.  You can check the website or visit them on Facebook for more information.

There will be a Super Bowl Party on the 7th!!  And Valentine’s Day is around the corner, as well.

So the evening was over.  I headed to Rehoboth Beach and my friends headed to Ocean City, Maryland, but not before we stopped in front of our favorite jeweler in Bethany Beach, Alice H. Klein of TKO Designs.

Destination? Bethany Beach, Delaware, The Quiet Resort, Independence Day Celebration, Saturday, July 4th, Let Freedom Ring, Fireworks, Parades, Entertainment, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches

img_5176dscn5839

I like putting on the heading that Bethany Beach is The Quiet Resort.  Maybe it was known to be that quiet many years ago, but no more!!  This is a sought after coastal town in Southern Delaware….perfect for summer vacations, and to get away during the fall and winter.

dscn5774

Bethany was founded by members of the Christian Church; the Disciples of Christ.  They came from Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania.  It was not supposed to be a town.  They wanted it to be a permanent yearly seaside assembly for the Christian churches of the country.

dscn5777

But quite a little town it is.  Families have been coming for so many years, creating many summertime memories.

The Fourth of July is celebrated big time in Bethany Beach.  This is the 32nd year.  There is usually a theme to every Fourth of July celebration.  This year’s theme is Let Freedom Ring.

Please note that on Friday, July 3rd, the Beach will be closed between Oakwood Street and Hollywood Street beginning at 5 p.m. in order to get ready for the Town’s 4th of July fireworks displays.  Make sure to pick all your beach items in this area.  The beach will re-open on Sunday, July 5th.

dscn5771

Fourth of July:  Registration

You may register your floats and bikes the day of the parade from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the registration desks as follows:  Floats-Route 1 and Central Avenue; Bikes-Christian Church grounds.

Fourth of July:  Schedule

Noon…The parade will begin at the intersection of Pennsylvania and Garfield Parkway and take its traditional 2 mile route through the town.  It will feature 5 marching bands and 6 entertainment groups on trucks with marching units.

After the parade, enjoy the following activities:

2 p.m.  Try your skill at the horseshoe-throwing contest at the southwest corner of the Christian Church grounds.

7:15 p.m.  Award Ceremony

7:30 p.m.  The Vigilantes band performs popular dance music on the Bandstand.  The 2015 Summer Concert Series continue all summer long.  On Sunday, July 5th the entertainment will be The Reagan Years, and 80’s Tribute.  All concerts begin at 7:30 unless otherwise noted.  These concerts are popular and perfect for summer evenings at the beach.  For more info., please visit http://www.townofbethanybeach.com.  Click on Activities and scroll down to Bandstand.

dscn0377

Dusk:  FIREWORKS!!  No July 4th event would be complete without them!!!

dscn5780

Around 40,000 people attend the celebrations all day long with the culmination of the Fireworks.  As you can imagine traffic and parking can be a hassle.  Best deal in town are the Trolleys.  They run continuously between 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.  You can flag down the trolley anywhere along the route for pick-up or discharge, except on Rt. 26 and Rt. 1.  No pick-up or drop-off on Jefferson Bridge or Rt. 26.  The fare is $.25.  The driver does not make change  Please note that the trolley no longer stops at the Lake Bethany entrance or the South Coastal Library.  For more information, please call 302-539-1996, or visit http://www.townofbethanybeach.com.  Click on Services and scroll down to Trolley.

Sunday, July 5th, is the Bethany Beach Farmers Market, from 8 a.m. until Noon at Garfield Parkway and Pennsylvania Avenue.  More info?  Please visit http://www.bethanybeachfarmersmarket.com.

Have a great holiday week-end!!

The Addy Sea, B & B, Bethany Beach, Delaware, Oceanfront, Adults Only B & B, At The Water’s Edge, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn4771dscn4759

B & Bs are found in all sates, from modest cottages to opulent mansions…the Addy Sea is located at 99 Ocean View Parkway in Bethany Beach, Delaware.  Tel. 302-539-3707.  Website?  http://www.addysea.com.

dscn4770

The Addy Sea was the 4th of 5 houses built by John M. Addy from Pittsburgh, PA.  It was one of the first homes to have indoor plumbing in Bethany.  Circa 1902.  In 1935, it was turned into a guest house.  At the present time, it operates as an adult B & B.

dscn4768

It is a venue for weddings and other celebrations.  They have their own catering service, as well.  Already, reservations for 2016 weddings are taking place for the months of May, June, September, and October.  So, if you like what you see on this post and are planning an event, give them a call.

dscn4764

Up and down the Delaware Beaches you will find a beach that will suit you and your family.  Having have lived in Bethany Beach for many years, the beaches here are wide and so unobstructed.  Some get a little crowded at the height of the season and others, just like this one at the Addy Sea’s edge, is the perfect place to park yourselves.

dscn4761

The Addy Sea has a Victorian exterior with cedar shingles and trimmed lacy gingerbread.  Indoors, 13 guestrooms, Victorian, as well.

dscn4754

dscn4756

Love the wrap aound porch at the Addy Sea.  Rocking on those rocking chairs, reading a book, having a drink….enjoying one gorgeous day at the beach.

dscn4757

dscn4769

The Delaware Beaches are getting ready for the season.  Coming to the beach, leaving the city behind.  Casual attire, sand between your toes….you know what I mean.  I live here, love it, and do not take it for granted!!

Shopping Destination? TKO, Bethany Beach, Delaware, Alice Klein, Jeweler, Designer, Artist, Handmade Jewelry, The Quiet Resort, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn2656dscn2640

This is one of my favorite stores at the Delaware Beaches.  My friends do know so because I give them some of these baubbles to them.  And, some have come to know TKO, Alice, and her husband, Bryant, as well.  Love stopping by when in Bethany Beach to check what’s new.  Usually, there is plenty to see.  Alice and her husband, Bryant, who is also an artist and designer, as well, design and make their jewelry in-house.

dscn2646

TKO is located at 100 Garfield Parkway in Downtown Bethany Beach, Delaware.  Stores 6 and 7.  Tel. 302-539-6992.  Website?  http://www.alicehklein-tko.com.

dscn2650

Since 1980, Alice has been in business and she has quite a following.  Her designs are recognizable; many customers collect her pieces of art.

dscn2653

Alice can customize any of your current pieces of jewelry.  Maybe a little “facelift” is all that is needed.

dscn2642dscn2641

From fun to fine jewelry, there is something for that special person in mind or for your own indulgence.  Traveling?  Her fun jewelry would be perfect!!

dscn2638

dscn2645

Alice has a line of wedding bands.  She tells me during the summer, men and women come in because they have lost their wedding bands.  That turns into a shopping event; all putting their 2 cents into the conversation.

dscn2639

You may also shop online, but at this time of the year TKO is open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.  You can also call for an appointment, as well.

dscn2652dscn2637

Women love accesorizing with jewelry.  Jewelry can add so much to a simple dress.  And, at times just that special piece is all you need to make that entrance.

dscn2643

dscn2654

And, for that Caribbean vacation, when warmer climates are just what is in your future….this line is very cool.

dscn2655

Tax free shopping at the Delaware Beaches….oh, I love it!!

Operation SEAs the Day begins tomorrow, Tuesday, 9/2, until Sunday, 9/7.  When the Warrior Families arrive they will find hot sizzling weather, perfect for their rest and relaxation in Bethany Beach, Delaware.

dscn0794

This event has become an annual event, after such a successful first year in 2013.  And, it does take a village to get it going.  Thirty soldiers and their immediate families will arrive at the beach.  Five additional families who first attended Warrior Beach Week last year have been selected to attend as SEAs the Day Alumni.

dscn0392

These important families will be staying in homes or condos donated to them by local homeowners.  There will be a a welcome reception by the VFW Post 7234, a beach bonfire/cookout offered by Sea Colony Management, events and activities like golf, concerts, paddleboarding, boating and fishing.  Then, a farewell brunch at the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Dept.  You can find this and more information about Operation SEAs the Day by visiting http://www.operationseastheday.org.

Operation SEAs the Day Mission is:  “To organize and facilitate a beach week event for our wounded soldiers and their families as a means of showing our appreciation for their service and sacrifice.”  The town is ready, posters are on the windows of shops and restaurants.

dscn0791

And when these families come, Bethany Beach will be an uplifting place to be.  This Quiet Resort looks gorgeous.

Destination? Bethany Beach, Jazz Funeral, Summer 2014, Mourning the passing of Summer 2014, Delaware Beaches, The Quiet Resort, Southern Delaware, Dress Up, Shed Tears, Laugh a Little

dscn4817

The Quiet Resort of Bethany Beach, Delaware, was really quiet then.  On Labor Day, those streets were rolled up.  Bethany did not have, on those early days, a pharmacy…it was a dry town.  Only one grocery store.  That’s how small it was.

During the winter there were only 500 of us living there.  So one summer, former Bethany Beach Councilman, Moss Wagner, and others in town like Ken Cloud, who owned Clouds, a children’s store, decided that a proper burial would be most appropriate.  A sending away the summer….not to forget it but to remember it.

Gather friends…or the ones that were left in town and celebrate!!  Share your memories, even shed a few tears…..dress up!

My photos here are from September of 1993.

dscn1222dscn1224

Moss is at the head of the funeral.  You can see it says R.I.P. Summer ’93.

The Jazz Funeral was usually around 4:30 p.m.  My friend, Sharon, and I would try to make it every year.  Then, we would bring our families to enjoy family entertainment, including the ritual of the lifeguards running towards the water for one last swim.

dscn1226

This photo is also from September, 1993.  If you look closely, the lifeguards are naked.  The bathing suits are around their necks.  Usually, the girls did not take the suits off, but at times they would show a little breast.  If you notice on the photo, people are walking on the beach….nobody is looking….the most natural thing in the world.  Those were the good times…haha.

This Labor Day Week-End, it is a bit different.  On Friday, 8/29, there is a Silent Auction to be held at Bethany Blues at 6 N. Pennsylvania Avenue from 3 – 4:45 p.m.  It is a fundraising event for the Sussex Country Big Brothers and Sisters.

dscn1186

And, on Monday, Labor Day, at 5:30 p.m. the Jazz Funeral will start on the Boardwalk.  It is big, it is fun, and it is still family entertainment.  I am not sure if they do some sort of swimming….it would be with clothes on, believe me.

Anyway, everyone is invited to participate.  We did have a beautiful summer, so why not remember it in this special way.  Have fun.  Cry your heart out, will you?

This sleepy little town has come a long way….
