Before I was married, became a mother and decided to be a stay-at-home mom, I lived in Baltimore, Maryland. I worked in Baltimore and then on Wednesday of Thanksgiving I would drive to Orlean, Virginia, to my boyfriend’s family farm house. He then became my husband, John. My mother in law, Louise, is a great cook and she would go all out Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day. Feeling totally satisfied and comatosed I dreaded the late in the day drive to Baltimore. Work was waiting on Friday. They really should give Friday off to everyone. A long week-end of Thanksgiving. Most of us have a lot to be thankful for.
I love an overcast day on Thanksgiving. I like it cold, as well. So, even though I enjoy the swaying palm trees of warmer climates, on Thanksgiving and Christmas, my preference is the chill in the air that the Atlantic Coast usually offers.
The Delaware Beaches are open for business. The following are restaurants in Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Georgetown, and Milford that will have Thanksgiving fare. This list is probably not complete. I will update it as I find other restaurants, but in the meantime, it might help if you are coming to the beaches to start a new Thansgiving tradition.

Two days after election day Southern Delaware gathers in Georgetown, Delaware, for Return Day. 2014 will celebrate 101 years of this tradition which is unique to Sussex County.
State Law in 1791 removed Lewes, Delaware, as County Seat. Georgetown became the new County Seat. Much more geographically centered was the reason. The State Law required that the voting take place in the new County Seat. Those same voters would “return” 2 days later to hear the outcome of the election….therefore the name Return Day began.
The celebration will have a carnival atmosphere….a celebration no less!! The Courthouse will shine during the festivities. And, The Circle will be crowded.

The Classic Cheeseburger and The Pulled Pork I totally recommend.
The Pulled Pork!! And, if they offer the Grilled Portobello…then it will be a decision. Talk to the server. They are good with their recommendations.

I first became acquainted with Patty’s when they catered an event for Fund for Women. The small chicken salad croissants were outstanding.
Subs, sandwiches, salads, party trays, and gourmet foods. Patty has been in the business for so many years throughout the U.S. She is so friendly and the food is so good. The menu changes constantly but she is happy to tell you that Patty’s serves food from subs to the sublime.

During good weather you can take a seat on her picnic table, otherwise, I think people come in to order and then take out.
Chips from restauranteur Jose Andres!! Got some. You pay a bit more but worth it.
On the left is a Grain Salad with Quinoa tossed with Genoa Salami, hot and sweet sopressata, provolone, Goathorn peppers and tomatoes in an oregano vinaigrette. And, on the right is a Corn Salad tossed with scallions and cherry tomatoes in a smoked paprika vinaigrette.

Whether you like to visit the Delaware Beaches at the height of the season or during their Second Season, you have to admit that it is great to get out of town and from the routines of our daily lives. For many this year is shoveling snow. Guess what? There is no snow at the Delaware Beaches, and I am writing this post from Rehoboth Beach.
You can walk the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk while breathing in the ocean air and taking in the gorgeous scenery.
You might have to walk it a few times if you are like me…..taking my friend, Ron, to eat his first pizza at Nicola Pizza the other day. I told them that Ron knew how to make pizza. He says he can make a Chicago pizza on the grill that it is to die for. I said to the server…make it a large, half sweet peppers and mushrooms; the other half sausage and onions….well done, please. I think Ron liked it!!

This exhibit is the first ever at the Rehoboth Art League of student work from various colleges and universities in Delaware and Maryland. Delaware State University, Salisbury University and Washington College will be represented. This exhibition gives these students a unique opportunity to exhibit their artwork in a professional setting, and learn valuable skills important to an artist, such as submitting, preparing, and displaying their work.
The Rehoboth Art League is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sunday from Noon until 4 p.m. This particular exhibit will be displayed until March 2nd.
If you are traveling to Georgetown, Delaware……you might be coming to the Delaware Beaches, leaving town or just doing some business in Georgetown…The Brick Hotel is a great place to have lunch or dinner. The Oyster Po Boy…fried oysters on a torpedo roll with chipotle mayo and a side green salad.
Marci got the Daily Quiche accompanied with a green salad, topped with blackberries and a sweet mustard dressing.

I ended my last post by saying that, afterall, one had to eat. I went to The Brick Hotel as a guest of Jamie and Leslie. Remember? They were the two friends that gave me that amazing tour of the Easter Seals in Georgetown.
The Brick Hotel is not far. I was excited because I have been meaning to visit the restaurant. I had heard great things. And you know what? They did not disappoint.
Georgetown, Delaware, is the County Seat of Sussex County. The center of the town is built around The Circle. The Circle is surrounded by the Town Hall, State and County buildings, including the Sussex County Courthouse.

We arrived at the Brick Hotel just as they were opening for lunch. We were the first ones. The perfect opportunity for those Kodak moments.
This hotel was built in 1836. The building is one of the few early commercial buildings remaining in Southern Delaware. The brick used was made from a kiln near Georgetown. Through its life it has operated as a hotel for 100 years. But, also over the years the building has been used for other purposes, as well.
For many years it was the Wilmington Trust Bank. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was renovated in 2008, preserving the historical elements of the building. Lynn was introduced and she graciously took us on a tour of The Brick Hotel. The Hotel has 14 rooms. Each room has a history and you can read about them on the website, www.thebrickhotel.com.
The rooms have all been renovated.
The bathrooms looked great.
The fireplaces are all originals, but gas inserts have been introduced.
Some rooms have access to the veranda; a wonderful place to sit and relax and look out to The Circle. Come to think of it, it would be the perfect place to watch Return Day. Delaware celebrates Return Day with plenty of festivities. It takes place 2 days after the national election with the losers and winners congregating on The Circle to “bury the hatchet” so to speak. Through the Hotel there are parlors to sit and relax; read or watch t.v. or get acquainted with other guests.
The Brick Hotel is available for corporate events, weddings, visiting groups, and special events. It has the restaurant, a tavern and a rooftop garden.
The Rooftop Garden was pretty large. Probably a great place to have an event.
The tavern was cozy and comfortable.
There are a couple of dining rooms. One larger than the other and a bit more formal.
There is also a private dining room.
We stopped to look at a masive door. What a conversation piece!! Remember when I mentioned that this building was also the Wilmington Trust Bank? Well, the vault is now the wine cellar.
We chose to eat in the more casual room.
The wood floors were original and beautifully preserved.
A few antique artifacts caught our attention.
We chose our table and proceeded to order.
Jamie always orders at The Brick Hotel their Classic Burger with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and a special sauce.
Leslie ordered the Grilled Portobello on a brioche with roasted vegetables and greens.
Our waitress told me that they had just finished making the pulled pork. That was a no brainer. I had the Pulled Pork Slammers in beer-braised BBQ sauce with coleslaw. All of our fries were delicious.
We had a wonderful lunch. Very satisfied; no need for dessert. The service was attentive and the prices were reasonable.
And, guess who came to have lunch, as well? Our governor, Jack Markell. You can tell you are in a small state when the governor arrives for lunch with hardly an entourage and stops to say hello to fellow diners.
I truly enjoyed it. I think it is the perfect place to have a quiet dinner. There is parking available and it is only about 20 minutes from the Delaware Beaches.
Note: On June 16th, Karen Murdock, a vocalist, who has been entertaining for the past year at The Brick Hotel will be performing nothing but Broadway tunes on the Rooftop Garden Terrace. It is called Broadway Under the Stars. 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Dinner will be served on the Rooftop with their featured dish being a Lobster Dinner for $19.99.
