dscn2949dscn2947

Located for the past 14 years on the Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware…222 Rehoboth Avenue.  Tel. 302-226-0176.  Owners are John and Joyce Michalek.  This is a go to bakery if you are spending time in Rehoboth Beach.  There are just a few full fledge bakeries in Rehoboth and to be honest they are all great, but yesterday my stop was at The Bake Shoppe getting a few Christmas goodies for my accountant.  The bakery is small and cozy.  You can sit and have a coffee enjoying some of their delicious baked goods.  A breakfast sandwich?  They serve those too at The Bake Shoppe.

dscn2920

It is a local’s hangout with plenty of residents stopping by early in the morning.  The Bake Shoppe is open year-round.  On Christmas Eve they will be opening until 3 p.m.

Bakeries are happy places; the aroma of cookies, cakes, breads, pies, always bringing out childhood memories.  At this time of the year look what I found at The Bake Shoppe on The Avenue.

Christmas baking is colorful and plentiful.

Rehoboth Beach, Magical History Tour, Rehoboth Beach Museum, The Jolly Trolley, The Bake Shoppe, Kicking Off Sea Witch Festival, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

dscn9122

What a difference!!  The weather today in Rehoboth Beach is like night and day.  Gorgeous to say the least.  It was also the perfect day to kick off the Sea Witch festivities. I was going to do so with a “Magical History Tour” of downtown Rehoboth Beach.

dscn9056

First things first.  A stop at The Bake Shoppe, located on Rehoboth Ave. A little coffee and a most delicious pumpkin muffin.  If you are in Rehoboth, please stop by.  This particular one was crunchy on top and so warm, moist and full of flavor.  Coffee was great too.

dscn9083

dscn9096

I was waiting outside with the others, when the Jolly Trolley Bus arrived.  The Jolly Trolley originated in 1970.  It celebrates and shares the sights, smells, colors and characteristics of the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach resort area.  The Jolly Trolley is also a year round charter service.  Please call 302-227-1197, and 302-249-1605 for information.  You can also visit http://www.jollytrolley.com.

dscn9098

dscn9100

Christine Hastings, Jolly Trolley, Vice President, and I believe part owner, was going to be our Driver.  George Palmer was going to be our Tour Guide.

dscn9101

I went into the bus last and, of course, a picture was taken of my fellow Jolly Riders!!  Guess what?  I did not know one single person.

dscn9102

Since I started my blog over 3 years ago, I have learned so much about our area.  Believe me, Rehoboth Beach and the Delaware Beaches, in general, are a great place to live.  That’s why they are so easy to promote.  I don’t take them for granted.

In order to know how far Rehoboth Beach has come, you need to unlock that past.  The Rehoboth Beach Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated “to encouraging and promoting public knowledge of and participation in the preservation of the history, culture, architecture and special character of Rehoboth Beach”.  It is not a big museum but the information will show you the progression of a town that is also known as the Nation’s Summer Capital.

dscn9116

The Rehoboth Beach Museum is located by the roundabout, adjacent to the Visitors Center and the Chamber of Commerce, at 511 Rehoboth Avenue. Website?  http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.  Exhibits, programs and entertainment are part of the Museum, as well.  Check the website for upcoming events.

dscn9105

George Palmer was the perfect Tour Guide.  His information was full of history given in a simple way and adding local color.

We stopped at the Anna Hazzard Museum.  This is one of the original “tent” buildings dating to the 1870s.  It reflects the early history of Rehoboth Beach.

dscn9133

dscn9134

Mr. Palmer told us that we used to grow a lot of peaches in Delaware.  Delaware, afterall, is an agricultural state.  Chickens?  Well, he told us that Delaware sells more chickens than anyone in the world.

The magnolia trees are beautiful in this area.  This is the farthest north they grow.

dscn9132

And, we started laughing when he asked if anyone had worn wool bathing suits?  Well, he had.  They were itchy too.  There was a time that men had to wear tops too at the beach.

Also, funny was when he mentioned that residents in Lewes consider Lewes with history, but Rehoboth Beach?  Oh well, they just have a past.

A drive by parallel to the beach.  I took this picture from the inside of the bus.  The ocean looked so pretty with the sun’s reflection.

dscn9104

We went by the Village Improvement Association of Rehoboth Beach.  At present, it is being rebuilt.  This association, also known as the VIA is a”charitable, non-profit organization, founded in 1909.  It promotes the interests, improvements and progress of the Rehoboth Beach community.  They perform charitable and civic work in and around the Rehoboth Beach area.  Its member are women of diverse interests, talents and backgrounds.  And, Mr. Palmer said that if you want to have something done in Rehoboth Beach, these are the women that can make it happen.  Hmmm…by the way, his wife belongs to it.  For more information, please visit http://www.rehobothbeachvia.org.

dscn9141

dscn9139

I recommend this tour to anyone visiting or to some of our locals and natives that might need a refresher course on Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  It is only 40 minutes long; you’ll still have time for the beach, shopping and eating.

After the tour I continued walking around Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  The shops were getting ready for a busy week-end….I hope Sandy lets visitors enjoy Sea Witch.

dscn9131

A stop at the Rehoboth Beach Post Office…the postal workers were ready!!

dscn9138

The beach looked gorgeous.  A sunny and clear day.

dscn9125

dscn9145

dscn9144

The Boardwalk was again, filling up with people soaking up the sun.

dscn9123

And, then my last stop was Lake Gerar.  Autumn at its best!!  Lake Gerar, along with Silver Lake and Lake Comegys, is one of the 3 fresh water lakes closest to the ocean than anywhere in the country.  These lakes are the jewels of Rehoboth Beach!!

dscn9147

I almost forgot…thanks for the water, Jolly Trolley!!  Have a great week-end!!

The Jolly Trolley, The Rehoboth Beach Museum, The Bake Shoppe…Team Up to Celebrate Sea Witch, “Magical History Tour”, Friday, October 26, 2012, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches

dscn7848

The Rehoboth Beach Museum opened its doors in the original Ice House in Rehoboth Beach in 2007.  Since then, they have been hosting exhibits, lectures and other programs that celebrate the history of having fun at the beach.  Since the days when Rehoboth Beach was known as a Methodist summer retreat, this coastal town has evolved into a summer destination.  While doing that, it has also kept is charm, while introducing contemporary excitement.  The Second Season in Rehoboth is just as busy as the Summer Season…so, guess what’s happening?  Sea Witch Festival is this coming Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The Jolly Trolley has joined forces with the Rehoboth Beach Museum and the Bake Shoppe to give visitors a special treat at the start of Sea Witch Week-End!!

Sea_Witch_Magical_History_Tour

To Locals & Visitors:  An invitation to take a “Magical History Tour”.  Please meet outside the Rehoboth Library located at 226 Rehoboth Avenue at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 26th.

dscn1317

Sites seen from the Trolley will include the Boardwalk, the Anna Hazzard Tent House, historic businesses and the Rehoboth Beach Museum.

The Anna Hazzard Tent House Museum is located in one of the original “tent” buildings dating to the 1870s.

Originating in 1970, the Jolly Trolley came to its touring fruition, when a group of jolly locals wanted to create a vehicle that would share the sights, smells, colors and characteristics of the Rehoboth Beach – Dewey Beach resort area, with many visitors and other locals.

The current exhibits at the Rehoboth Museum are:  “Skimming the Surface” which tells the story of the active surfing community in the area, “Rehoboth Speaks”, the story of the founding and growth of Rehoboth Beach, and a photo tribute to Funland’s 50th Anniversary.

The Rehoboth Beach Museum is located at 511 Rehoboth Ave.  Hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.  Please note that beginning November 1st, the Museum will start its winter schedule; closing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Downtown Rehoboth Beach Bakeries, Open on New Year’s Day, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, New Year’s Resolutions will all be forgotten..

dscn1328

I woke up so early and rushed out to see if I could get a glimpse of a sunrise on the last day of the year.  Too cloudy; oh well.

I decided then that a visit to the downtown Rehoboth Beach bakeries would be the thing to do.  Come New Year’s Day full of 2012 resolutions that will go out the window the moment you see what the bakeries will have; sticky buns, danish, muffins, cupcakes, donuts, breads….wash it down with a cup of coffee; I like it bold, not regular.

dscn1327

The Bake Shoppe is located at 222 Rehoboth Avenue.  Tel. 302-226-0176.  It will open at 6:30 a.m.  This bakery has been in Rehoboth Beach for so many years.  They are known for their traditional Polish Babkas.  The pictures do not lie; check them out and start drooling.

The Bake Shoppe, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Famous Polish Babkas, Split Cream Donuts, Cakes, Pies, Pastries, Review, Delaware Beaches

Once again, Renee hits the nail on the head.  It is so funny because when you hear Renee talk, and had never met her, you think this woman must be huge.  Her appetite for Annie Banannies custard, and her obsession with cup cakes; eaten practically every day would make anyone gain weight just by thinking about it.  Well, she is very thin.  Really, I don’t know where she puts it.  Her target this week is a Split Cream Donut.

100_4453

She told me I needed to check the Split Cream Donuts at The Bake Shoppe, right on 222 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  The tel. is 302-226-0176.  The owners are John & Joyce Michalek and they have been at this location for 12 years (right across from the Fire Hall).

Rushing I did; had to, thinking that by the time I got there all baked goods would be gone. I could not believe it, they were out of Split Cream Donuts. So, on an on I went about Renee; well, they made one for me just on the spot.  Talking about freshly made.

This is a full fledge baked shop and baked goods are all made fresh, from scratch.  They have donuts, danish, cookies, cakes, beach cookie cut-outs, sticky buns, mini pastries, rustic breads and rolls, bagels, cupcakes and donuts.   The bagels come every day from the Bagel Shop in Milton, up the road, north of Lewes.

Joyce told me that they are well known for their Polish Babkas.  Babka comes from baba, a very tall, delicate yet rich yeast-risen cake from Western Russia and Eastern Poland.  Traditional Babkas have a fruit filling; the more modern ones may be filled with a chocolate or a cheese filling.

Polish Babkas

Today at the Bake Shoppe the Babkas were made out with a cheese filling and a cherry filling.  As the seasons change so do the fillings change, as well.

Joyce and and John are very friendly and will answer all your questions about their baked goods.  There is coffee available and you can even sit at a table or the bar and enjoy the treats.

100_4439

I left with my Split Cream Donut and decided to have my own tasting at home.  I can truly tell you that I have not had a donut in years.  I try not to.  They are just too fatenning period.  I am not going there.  But, gosh, I will tell you that I ate this one with great pleasure.  I did take some of the filling out so as not to feel too guilty, though.  It was very light and not dry.  Actually, the filling was light too.  Delicious!!

100_4456

Thanks Renee.

Talk to you later…you know I will….
